Herbs & Spice Reviews

Old school continental?

Well, we decided to go to Herbs & Spice after vacillating between Medici, Huckleberry, and this. This was good, but I wish I had tried one of the other two instead.

Tomato basil soup: came lukewarm, and in a very shallow dish. Reminded me of the stork and fox story. I know I ordered 1-by-2 soup, but I usually get much larger portions in other places.

Bread platter: the first is complimentary, subsequently INR 100 per serving. So the menu says. The rolls were okay, the slices were poor. I could clearly make out that these had been heated in a microwave before being brought to the table. It was served in a lovely homey basket with a blue napkin, though. Saving grace, ahem ahem.

We then ordered the veg platter for starters. Mini pizzas, which were so cute! Pita and hummus, meh. Bland potato croquet. Pretty good crostini.
Mustard all over the salad! Why would you murder salads?!

I had a hot chocolate with all this. Said hot chocolate comes in a cho chweet conical mug, and tastes really good. Especially on a bracing "winter" evening.

For mains, we had "Italian". A pretty good spinach mushroom quiche, with a great flaky crust. I recommends! A run-of-the-mill spinach ricotta ravioli: I don't know in which interdimensional portal the ricotta was hiding for this one. Certainly not in this badly-presented dish. The lasagne was the biggest letdown. No pasta sheet! This was a "veg shepherd's pie", not a lasagne.
More such letdown. The bitter chocolate hazelnut tart is not bitter, has no discernible hazelnut, and is not a tart. Pretty decent brownie it is.
The pavlova: meringue covered in a horribly bland and watery cream and topped with shavings of melon. Looks more like a mummy's scalp than a delectable dessert.
Sticky toffee pudding: I am not a fan of puddings, but this may have been good. The sauce had clearly and visibly separated, though.
Brownie ice cream. How can you go wrong with this one! Hard brownie, meh vanilla ice cream. Obviously microwave-reheated stale brownie.

Overall, you might want to go here once to see what it's all about, but you will not want to return.

very bad service!!

Its just another over hyped place and definitely not worth the money.
They first served a bread basket which had hair strands on it. We ordered Potato wedges, for Rs160 he gave us 5 wedges in which one was rotten from inside. The Lasagna we ordered were just baked veggies and very sloppy with no Lasagna sheets in it!
More importantly the toilet is very close to the kitchen.... which I tried to access but could not because it was so dirty and the flush was not working!! there was no water at all!! People getting in were compromising with the situation!!!

Exorbitant & Lousy service

Its a overhyped place, which def needs feedback to improve.
I happen to visit this place during 1 of the weekend, We ordered for a soupy fuesili pasta , however it was so damn dry! Ordered a risotto, which was not up to the mark, All of a sudden they stopped the music, I had to req them to play.

Need to improvise the custome service skill of the staff.

Simplicity with Taste

Herbs and Spices well to be frank the place does justify its namesake with the exception of leaving out the later part of spices in their food.
Went there with my wife last month. we order a red beet root soup, stuffed chicken breasts and Onion Chicken and thyme Quiche and few drinks.
Soup was stone cold but at the same time I have to accept it left a very sweet taste in beetroot in the mouth, but the best part of the meal of stuffed chicken breasts. soft juicy and stuffed with minced chicken and mushroom. Quiche was a waste of time and energy anyway.
Staff is very courteous but service is awfully slow. Our soups arrived after a good half and hour later even though the restaurant was half empty wonder how much time they would take if it runs full.

Have always loved this place

I have always loved this place and this has been one of our most favourite hang out places. We used to frequent this place so often that i even decided to propose to my wife here. The place definitely has gone through ups and downs. The quality of food did drop in between, but now its picking up again.

The pork sausage is super yum. Wifey loves the prawns and herb rice that they serve. I love almost of the beef steaks. All in all a nice place to hangout made better by very friendly service.

Wonderful music, great food

Went on a friday night to experience a live band perform in Herbs and Spice. It was truly amazing. Tried the Italian there. Comes with complimentary breads! If you like live music, good food and of course great desserts ( I tried walnut meringue and it was HEAVENLY! ) , try this place out. Loved the ambiance too!

Gotta Love Karaoke!!

Thanks to karaoke nights, I've been showing my face rather regularly here :) At the end of a long Thursday, h&s does seem to end my woes (at least temporarily) ;)

Wholesome Experience!

When you arrive at Herbs & Spice, you will be greeted by aromas all around. It was a Sunday afternoon and barbecue time. While most people were busy gorging on barbecued cuts, we decided to keep it simple and order from the menu.

The place has a nice feel to it, a casual dining with tasty food. We ordered for Lemon Iced tea and Strawberry Lemonade. Both the drinks were fine. Then we were served fresh assorted breads with herb butter. They were so good that it was less than a minute for us to finish all of it :D

For the main course we ordered Fusilli in pesto sauce and Spinach and Mascarpone Risotto. The Risotto was so delicious, that even though I was full half way through, decided not to waste any. My friend ordered the pasta in pesto sauce, that he liked, however I found it a bit too dry. Overall both the dishes were really good and worth trying.

Now lets talk about service, I guess they could have done better. It seems so difficult to get the attention of wait staff sometime. Also, when the drinks were served to us, there were no Swizzle Stick provided to mix the drink. We asked one waiter, and he was so busy that after waiting 10 minutes we asked the other one. Similarly, asking for bill or menu, everything was slow slow slow.

So, thumbs up for food and ambiance and thumbs down for service!

Highly Overated!

We were there first time wk end of Feb 17th. Quite a few items on the menu were not available.
Food was average, quantities on the lower side - but a huge disconnect between the menu pricing and the ambience/quality of food!! Live Band was 25 minutes late!
In summary - highly over-rated!

Karoake Night - Fun !

After a long and tiring office day , we decided to hop in to this joint for a quiet dinner since its at a walking distance from our residence. On reaching there , we discovered that it was a Karaoke night !!! What was expected to be a quiet dinner turned out to be quite the reverse ! The food as usual was yummy ,order being Chicken Sausages , Basil chicken (not on the menu but handwritten on the blackboard) ,Prawn starters ,Chicken in Almond & pomegranate sauce and a pint of Beer for my husband.. Thoroughly enjoyed the food amidst live performance and must say had a real good time ..Our total bill stood at 1.3k inclusive taxes.. Returned home with a satiated tummy and smiling face ! :) :)

Okay food, good crowd, smoke in your eyes

Based on the Times Food Guide 2012's generous review, we visited Herbs & Spice at Indira Nagar on a Sunday afternoon. We had starters, salad, a chicken main course, and a round of desserts. The food was okay (not great not bad though the breast of chicken should have been much more tender) and the crowd was the normal Indira Nagar types, i.e, traveled and smart casual.

What didn't impress us at all was the slightly tacky appearance of the waiters and the smoke from the barbecue that kept getting into our eyes -- and we weren't even next to the grill. For the prices they charge, I'd expect smarter waiters, a cleaner set up, and definitely a better electric chimney to suck the smoke.

I wouldn't go back. There are better options at that price point.

Hearty meal!

I gave cocktails a miss coz I dint find it innovative. Chilli sauté prawns were well done.
For main course, we had char grilled chicken with mushroom sauce which was a little undone on one plate and rubbery on the other.. However, the mushroom sauce ws full of flavours. Another main course we had was the fish with couscous. I fell in love with the tangy sauce coz it was definitely made frm fresh tomatoes and bell peppers and the fish ws perfect! :)
The finishing touch was amazing coz PAVLOVA was simply awesome. I suggest u try it if u like fresh cream and strawberries and trust me it's much more than wt I can explain.
What worked:
Efficient service
Good ambience
Attentive waiters
Good portions
Desserts r exceptionally good though few are over priced
Changing menu

What dint:
60 bucks for one bottle of mineral water!!!???
More varieties in cocktails (all the classics wr present which don't interest me)

I suggest this place if u looking for some decent food and desserts. Worth one try.
V went for lunch and a la carte.

Good stuff!

Herbs & Spice has its branches in Indiranagar, Whitefield & Palace Cross Road in Bangalore. Years ago, I had visited the Whitefield branch which is a quaint old villa & it was a lovely experience eating out there. I don’t remember what I had then but it was pretty good stuff. The cuisine here is European.

We visited the Indiranagar branch in the evening around 7:30 p.m. and it was empty. The place started filling up after 8:00 p.m. with the usual mix of couples, big groups of friends, and expats. The ambiance is very pleasant with a laid-back look, very much like a restobar. For the sports fans, they have a big projector screen set up on one side but the sound does not overpower. There is also a bar area near the entrance for those who do not fancy the food but drop by only for a drink.

On getting a cosy corner table, we were offered the drinks & food menus. By the time we could decide what we wanted to eat, the server arrived with the complimentary bread basket with a margarine and herbs dip. The bread was fresh & warm, the dip was creamy & finger-licking good.

Since we arrived early, we decided to go for a starter along with the drinks. So we ordered the Olive Chicken along with Vodka for my husband & Long Island Ice Tea for myself. The starter & drinks arrived in about ten minutes. And boy! I was bowled over the by the presentation & delicious flavor of the chicken. It was cooked perfectly and the olive in the middle added to the tanginess.

After this yummy starter, we scanned the menu for the main course. After much deliberation on whether I should go for the Prawn ravioli tossed with wine, tomatoes, olives and capers or the Grilled fillet of Fish on a bed of spinach and a balsamic vinaigrette, I decided on the Spinach & Mascarpone Risotto and hubby took a fancy for the Beef Steak.

Sad but true

What do you write about a place that used to be a favorite haunt, and is now going to seed ... Went with my family on a Sunday ... for a forgettable lunch - where the buffet (a very apathetic, lackadaisical spread) was priced at an atrocious Rs 599/-++ and where a 1 litre bottle of Aquafina was sold at Rs.80/-!! When I remonstrated to a pugnacious head waiter, he told me that he could lower the price for me ... as if I was seeking his patronizing gesture.. I wonder if there is a law against such atrocious retail pricing ...

Go at your peril ... I have signed off from this place in my mind ....

It use to be so good

I use to love going to this place for the lovely food that use to be once served there. I don't know if the chef has changed, but I saw a significant deterioration of the quality of food. The seasoning is wrong, the meat is cooked properly, the sauce is not generous to name a few. And what is worse, they have increased their price. I doubt if I will go back to this place ever again.

Great food

Been here on Friday night and was surprised to get a table without reservation. Very attentive and friendly bunch of folks work here and it was without any wasted moment we were given our menu once we settled. To start with we ordered Pita with Hummus and a pear salad. Before this was on our table we were given a basket of bread which was warm and just ready to devoured. Off with the starters and on to the main course i ordered fusilli with black peppers, black olives and basil pesto with sun dried tomatoes and my husband went for the chicken quiche. The pasta was just amazing with right well balanced flavours of pepper, basil pesto and the tomatoes. My husband was enjoying his Quiche equally. Dessert time - nothing beat their dark chocolate slice of cake with hazel nut. Hot and the flavours just burst in your mouth after the first spoonful. Overall enjoyed the place and i must say the serving is actually huge and worth the money you spend. Definite place to visit again as it's close to my home.

Smokey Goodness

I have been here quite a few times “maybe” because i live in Indiranagar. I have been to H&S for a few late Saturday lunches and also on a few occasions for the Sunday brunch for which H&S is well known. Vegetarians beware because the brunch is a big meaty feast. Not trying to scare you off though. They certainly have a lot of vegetarian food to go around.

The last weekend my fiance and I decided to drop by H&S for the Brunch , inspite of having really small appetites that day. We could not get a table but we found ourselves sitting at the cosy end of the bar, which we found to be the least smoky of all the spots. Oh Yeah! The smoke can a bit of an overkill if you are sitting very near the big grill .

At the bar i decided to order a Lemon Ice Tea (Rs. 80) to beat the late Sunday heat. Eventually ended up having two of those while my Fiance decide to go with a grape juice (Rs 125).

While I sat staring into the ala carte menu, contemplating if I should order a dish or indulge in the brunch buffet, my fiance served her first round of salad and starters. I then decided, the BBQ buffet it is (Rs 499) though i was not really hungry. Started with the corn (One side was burnt and the other was not cooked - Just my luck i guess) prawns on a skewer(exceptional flavour, well marinated, slightly on the sweet side, the chicken sausages, the beef with a peppery and a mushroom sauce for the second serving. The salt in the pepper sauce was way overboard for my palette. But it’s great that they started serving sauce as an accompaniment coz during one of my earlier brunch visits there, chewing on grilled chunks of meat was a bit disappointing.

I was not too pleased with the salad spread. So just had some broccoli from the salad section. More variants on the salad menu would be appreciated.

From one of my previous visits, i would like to make a mention of the bacon mushroom spinach quiche (Rs 250) from the menu. One of the best quiches i have eaten in a long time and worth every buck. The smoked chicken salad (Rs 210) was ok. H&S could have been a little generous on the chicken. I would expect a lot more that 5 lettuce leaves and 5 pieces of chicken for that price.

For the dessert, We tried the Hazelnut Ricotta and Chocolate (Rs 115). This one of loaded with cheese and hazelnut. Definitely worth trying. The Cappuccino Coffee was made to order. I like a bit on the stronger side.

Hats off to the staff. Am sure they go crazy on a Sunday. Though there was chaos i must mention that we received our orders in reasonable time.

4.5 points for the great food, location and staff. I will give the ambiance a 3 only and only because of the smoke. The rest of the week i have found the place a perfect place to relax, have a beer (Geist) and some great food from the menu.

dessert gods

For some reason I have noticed that restaurants in Bangalore cant actually make dessert and as a devotee of chocolate this doesn't really go down well.

I have been going to Herbs and spice since it started in the small one room restaurant in Indiranagar till now. The food has never let me down. Its gorgeous pear and walnut salad, perfectly cooked pasta and chocolate desserts are my regular favorites.

It is by far one of the only places in Bangalore where one can eat dessert(especially chocolate) and sink into complete bliss.

With friendly and prompt service, a great barman, live band, weekend breakfasts and Sunday brunch what more could you ask for?

Great food, relaxed ambience and friendly hosts

I have been visiting this restaurant frequently since my first visit in November 2010. The food has been consistently good and the overall feel of the place is very inviting which is what makes me go there over and over again. The pizzas and quiches are excellent and the desserts from the place is good. Try their Walnut Meringue. To make things even better they have now started serving breakfast on weekends. Bangalore definitely needed a good breakfast place outside the five stars and this place definitely delivers value for a breakfast buffet at Rs. 299. The place also has a barman eager to serve cocktails. They are quite good and well priced even if sometimes one feels he tries to hardsell. The owners are friendly yet non intrusive. My favourite place in the Indiranagar area of Bangalore.

Disappointing

Visited H&S today with wife.. Ordered Caesar Salad, Ravioli & Grilled Fish in Hollandaise sauce. Service was slow but we didn't mind since we were a little early for lunch. Salad arrived first and literally left a bitter taste in the mouth..the lettuce to blame. Next came the fish and ravioli..the ravioli was passable but the fish was the truly disappointing - tough, rubbery with an overly sour sauce. I complained and to their credit they did not charge me for the dish..However, it was disappointing to have such average fare dished out from a place where we have had good dining experiences in the past.

My experience till date has been quite good with Herbs and Spice. Basic flavours have been good, good service and good music. I would say a good place to go to if you want a relaxed evening. Parking is a problem and ensure you block a table before you go there if you are planning to go in the peak lunch/ dinner time.

Thanks for a nice evening...

three of us, foodies, had a wonderful time here. Some brilliant tapas dishes (the potato with olive and jalapeno is amazing)...the garlic tiger prawn (may seem too bland for the indian palate) was authentic european cuisine.
And the pizza was delicious....the wheat crust was genius!!!!

just one suggestion...they should increase the variety of beers they serve. in keeping with the european theme, murphy's and guinness would be great additions to the menu

Authentic

Visited Herbs today after ages to try out their buffet.

The place was packed and mostly with foreigners. I was sitting close to the bar and opposite me was a group of Europeans relishing their meal. Before leaving each and every person in this group made it a point to walk up to the Sardar owner and thanked him for the most delicious and the closest meal that they get back home.

I have always liked Herbs, but when you get praised for the authenticity of your food it must be a real high!!

Way to go Sardar!

Disappointing Buffet

I had never been to Herbs and Spice before but heard a lot about it. Friend and I were taking a break from eating lunch at our respective work places and decided to try their buffet which was priced at 450 per person.
So the soup that was served - Tomato seemed like the only saving grace of the entire meal. The Brinjal salad was good as well. However the other 2 salads looked the same and had no flavour of a good salad dressing like a vinaigrette or olive oil. The pastas that are served at your table - can be given a miss. You will sort of regret biting into the pesto sauce pasta. It's sad that a superb place like H&S cannot come up with good pesto sauce.
The chicken which was steamed - in a dark sauce had no flavour and didn't tingle the taste buds. The fish in a white creamy sauce had an overpowering flavour of lemongrass or some sort of a stalk that was finely diced which kept popping into your mouth as you take a bit from your dish.
The chocolate cake that claimed to be a mousse - was infact not a mousse but your good ol' chocolate cake - for which you don't get seconds as part of the buffet. Sad again because it was yummy and the concept behind buffets (most often) is unlimited food !
Anyhow, I really hope Manjit does something about improving the standards of the Buffet at H&S because we would love to visit again and maybe this time for the ala carte menu !

Quite a nice place to go for lunch which is wht i went to his place for. Although the ambience isn't grand, it's quite nice to go to this place to hang out. The decor although very minimal make you feel that the place is very commodious, with lots of sunshine streaming through the windows to add to the effect. My friends and i tried out the buffet which was quite good and very filling. The staff was very co-operative. A place i would love to visit again with a bunch of pals!

Hearty Italian

My first visit was a weekday lunch with colleagues.
I was told that the place is awesome in the evenings but even a Nov afternoon seemed wonderful. They have kept the place white washed with plenty of windows to let the sunlight stream in. Really gives it a relaxed feel...where you would want to relax on a lazy Sunday over brunch.

We ordered a Tapas starter called Patata something. It was a huge disappointment as it was just french fries tossed in a spicy tomato sauce. Maybe good with beer but not otherwise.
However the rest of the dishes more than made up for this lapse.
Someone ordered a fig & mozarella salad which was amazing for the way the flavours come together. I ordered a grilled veg pasta. The veggies were grilled to perfection and the pasta was nicely tossed in olive oil. I liked their portions...perfect. Wont leave you hungry or bloated. I liked the fact that they didnt skimp on the veggies...I had more veggies than pasta in my plate. The taste was hearty and basic...just the way it should be.

We ordered an assortment of desserts. I just sampled a bite or two. Everything was fabulous...nothing too sweet.

Pricing was decent. Parking can be a problem. Maybe they have valet for dinner time.

Great Food + Deserts: 4.5/5

I have been visiting herbs & spice since they opened doors, in a small place next to 100 feet road, where they used to have no printed menus. From that moment I have been a big fan of this restaurant.

Currently located on Indiranagar, opposite SBI, the restaurant has very european feel to it. It is as if you had just walked into a restaurant in a small town in Europe. You have to visit the place to feel the experience.

The food is one thing that I have never been disappointed. They have been able to maintain the same quality and standards from the past six to seven years, which is simply remarkable.

They serve some of the best Italian food in town. They have some of the best spaghetti meat-ball. Also they serve a number of other very delicious main course dishes. Lately they have added an all day sandwich menu. My favourite being the Chicken Roast Sandwich. The new addition to the restaurant has been a bar and some live music in the evening. It just completes a perfect dinner. But my best part of the restaurant is their deserts. From their simply banana breads to the walnut mirange to their eggless chocolate cake, each of them are simply delicious. If for nothing, just visit the place for their deserts. They are simply outstanding.

And to add to all this is their staff, which are very friendly and make your meal a delightful experience.

So do visit this restaurant when in Bangalore.

Enter at your own RISK (EYR akka YUK)

my carnivorus beau wanna hit some place good and we ended up here. 499 plus tax for a buffet without any drinks and desserts. The salads were passable, except carrot and raisin salad. His opinion, it was not worth the price paid, half of the items were not cooked and tasteless. Look like they forget spices last sunday. We have been to better places , with better service and ambiance and ofcourse BETTER FOOD.

I eat only seafood, so i aksed the floor manager, a middle aged man with tie, he said yes madam, you can opt for it, we have fish and tiger prawns.. Alas, i waited half an hour and got 4 pieces of fish and it was not cooked properly and the name of the fish was not mentioned, some cheap stuff....
Next they sent TWO tiger prawns , i felt like vomiting, again flavourless and undercooked.

I thought lemme have some salad again and end the day to fill me up. There comes Manjeet and aksed me how was the food. I said i was not satisified with the buffet and it is a total disaster , so here to pick salad to fill me up. He said he will give an extra dish and aksed what i want, i said some veg thing will do, may be a pasta or so.

The one star for giving tastless , spiceless pasta to cover up my bad experience. When the pasta arrived we showed him the uncooked fish and he said "If you eat only sea food i would say that this is a wrong option " .. ( i felt like cursing the floor manager ,who suggested me to opt for this.. Staff memebers please do know your food and what to suggest for customers, now the manager said something and Manjeet comes with a different story,,,, Totally outta business ethics )
Manjeet continued " you said prawns were tasteless, ie your personal choice, we have people come here again and again aksing for the same"

To Manjeet "i have had better prawns at via milano and other palces (i feel it is an insult to compare such palces to your pathetic place)"

Over all, pathetic amabiance, it was too hot to sit in the middle of the barbeque smoke and the servide and the food were awful.
Amibance, service, attitude and food = all score the same, ie ..A BIG ZERO and we wasted 1133 for two people...

Service was bad too, we ahve to ask thrice or more to refill water, we thought we should not tip them, then i left 1 rupee coin , just to show my gratitude to their pathetic serivce.

Am adding this to my not gona hit again zone,.,,, RIP

Not at all worth it

I went to herbs and spice yesterday after hearing and reading all the great reviews about this place. Unfortunately there is much a hype about it. The ambience is good, gives a feel of European dinning place but it ends there itself.
Food was quite bland with no flavors at all. We had crab cakes, lamb lasagna and penne pasta with mushroom in cream sauce. Lasagna had a lot of salt, with no special aroma or taste. Pasta was the worst one, I had to ask for oregano and pepper to spice it a bit. Would not recommend the pasta to anyone there.

I have been to quite a lot of italian places in bangalore and chennai, quite strangely and with utter disappointment would have to say Herbs and Spice is at the bottom of my list.

Share:

Not sure about it

I checked out this place today with my brother for lunch and came home disappointed.

I started off with a mojito, which had too much mint and lemon-lime. There was no subtlety in the taste. If having a "LAZY SUNDAY BBQ With Unlimited Havana Club Mojitos" was the bartender's idea of gaining more practice to mix mojitos, he/she needs more such events.

The risotto's taste was good, and the portion was fine. But, the cream sauce in my risotto and my brother's pasta was too much in quantity. The rice or the pasta should not be floating in a sea of sauce.

Since it was barbecue lunch day, they had the grill going. The tongs that the chef was using to move around the different meats fell on the floor, and he picked it up and reused it without cleaning it. No matter how clean the floors are, one should not be doing that.

What I experienced might be one-off, but I wasn't satisfied with my lunch. It wasn't worth the price I paid.

bad experience today

Hi. I used to be a great fan of H&S. I went there today for dinner with my family. Lets talk about the starters. We ordered 3 starters. The quantity served was hilarious. A stuffed potato dish was serverd with 4 pieces of small marble sized stuffed potato with a dip. A chicken starter was 5 finger sized pieces. What has gone wrong with them?! Earlier the quantity served was pretty decent. BAD way of cost cutting !
Second thing, my gimlet was served towards the end of the starters. Guess they confused it as a desert.
.Ambience was good as usual. By the way, my evening ended with main course at World cuisine network, a couple of buildings away.

Time to pay attention

I actually enjoyed my dinner two evenings ago at this nice restaurant. I have come here before and felt this time around that something was slipping - the food was way too cheesy and the ceasar's salad looked somewhat tired. My wife did not quite enjoy her spinach soup ... my kids liked their pizza and quiche though. The ambience was great, and the music (Floyd video) was out of the world. I hope the owner pays more attention to the food quality, but then I see him responding here mostly to positive and affirming posts ...

Loved the setup

Yesterday I was in Bangalore with a few work colleagues. This place was recommended by a colleague who has lived in Bangalore for quite a few years, plus H&S was rated highly on burrp! too - so gave it a shot.

The ambiance of Herbs & Spice is non-pretentious and warmly inviting. The place is quite big, gets plenty of day-light and smells really good. They were playing light rock music and that set the perfect mood for lunch for weary travelers like us.

They served us a basket of bread and herbed butter to get started.

For starters we had Assorted Sauteed Mushrooms & Croquet Potatoes. The mushrooms were heavenly and a very highly recommended option. The potatoes were good, but I think the quantity was less - there were 6 small pieces. Or maybe, I was really hungry.

For the main course, we had a Whole wheat pizza and a spinach ravioli. Again, both the items were heavenly. The Ravioli could do with some more sauce in it - since it was lip smacking delicious. The whole wheat pizza was yumm too. I went for a lemon ice-tea to go along with my food.

Overall a great place for group lunches or even for a romantic date.

Not worth it

If u have a sweet tooth you can give it a try! but This is definitely not the place for sizzlers! you may try elsewhere lik yoko or indijoe

Apart from that, the music was good but would be gr8 if the decibel level is lower ! wash rooms can be improved!

Always a dream

This place is right next to my office so I go there almost every 15 days, and trust me it has never let me down. the food is always just rightly done, and leave a lovely aftertaste. Which to me is more important that the initial taste of food. Manjit being a chef running this place could be the secret behind churning out magic consistently. Wish I could rate this as 7 star place.

Liked it before, but now ill never return

Went there on a saturday night. they had live music playing. it was so noisy because the guests were talking loudly to hear themselves on top of the music.
Food took a good 90 minutes and a couple of F-words to arrive. yes 90 freakin minutes. in the meantime, the waiters did not even bother to fill our glasses with water. what really pissed me off was that there were tables where people waited for just 15 minutes to get their food.
After all that the portions were just not enough for us who were made to wait for so long. the manager did try to redeem himself with some complimentary desserts but with the 90 minutes of indifference and the horrible noisy atmosphere, this place will not see me again

To Manjeet

It wasn't the starters I was referring to, but the entrees. Surely you can try and put a bit more on the plate can you not ?? You don't really expect people to order more than 2 entrees to be satisfied, right ??

So, I must stop by on a Sunday if I'm to have a chance of leaving full, is it ?? Hmm

Consistently fantastic food!

We've tried pizza all over Bangalore, and Herbs & Spice's is absolutely the best in the city. The crust is crisp and not doughy/chewy, the sauce is fresh, and the topping combinations are delicious! The pastas are also excellent -- delicate noodles that are truly cooked al dente (a lot of good Italian restauants in Bangalore seem to highly overcook their pastas) -- and the pear salad is incredible too, with good dark greens, roasted walnuts, and plenty of succulent pears. And one of the biggest draws -- the amazing desserts! The eggless chocolate cake is among the best and most reasonably priced sweets in the city. Warmed slightly and served with a rich fudgy-chocoloate topping, it's the perfect end to a wonderful meal! The service is consistently good, and the music is terrific too. Even when a band isn't playing, there's always blues, jazz, rock, or other smooth tunes swirling in the air. We eat at a variety of restaurants all over Bangalore and can truly say that Herbs & Spice is one of our very favorites and that its food that can compete with that of much higher-priced restaurants! Keep up the great work!

Nice Get together

Had been here for a get together with my old team . Its really amazing place. The food tastes really good. I have decided to try all the main course items in days to come. I haven't tried the deserts , so can't comment on that, but its on cards for next time.
It would have been nice if the Menu is in more detail for each item and its ingredients. Some veggies are more particular about it.

Nice Sunday Lunch

Having heard about Herbs and Spice recently from a friend, my fiancée and I thought we could have a nice relaxed sunday lunch there.
So we entered, and it was filled with loads of people, families, friends and students etc. having a nice afternoon. We notice that there was a bbq going on in the centre of the restaurant.

So the waiter asks for our order, we first order our drinks and a chicken skewer starter with bbq and mustard sauce. It takes about 15 minutes to come, and my first impression on seeing it was….”wow, so little!!!” and 1 skewer actually had an inch size piece of chicken. Though it was yummy, I feel the quantity was not worth the price at all !!
Next we ordered a thin crust chicken smoked pizza, which was quite interesting.

All in all, it’s a nice restaurant and a go-again restaurant. However, I hope the management seriously does something about the portion size!

However, we recommend you stop by on Sunday to take advantage of our Sunday Barbecue offer - unlimited, all you can eat non-veg barbecue for Rs. 499.

Eat and go here

The rent for this place is a lot because it's painly reflected in the serving size. Whom do they feed here ?? Anorexic models ? 8 year olds ?? People who've had their stomachs stapled ?? Citizens of Lilliput ??

Why do I have to have more than 3 courses and still go home and eat ?? The food's decent, I say that and a decent bit of attention has been paid to it but when the plate of the entree gets placed in front of me, the first thought to blaze across my head is, " That's it ? "

The cheesecakes are some of the best in this city though

One of my favorites in bangalore

Herbs and Spice is one of my favorite restaurants in bangalore. Love its simple yet cozy interiors, and its deserts are the best bet to satisfy your sweet tooth.
I would love it if they added more variety to their vegetarian menu as it is pretty limited. Sometimes the pasty gets a bit too oily which I hope they will take care of, because it kills the whole feel of well made italian fare.

all in all, it continues to be on my top recommends. cheers

Slurrps & Burrps

Having an afternoon free for us, my friend and I wanted to have some really good food. Being a foodie we didn't want to be disappointed. After much thought we landed up at Herbs & Spices and what an experience!!! The food was simply awesome!!! We had a lovely, filling and yummy lunch complemented with a great music and ambience. The place has a very relaxed atmosphere with soft & soothing music.
The Caesar salad we ordered was the best I have ever had. The just-right tanginess of the dressing and the occasional crunch of the bread was a relish. The main course was even better and I advise for holding up some space for the desserts for the chocolate & walnut tart was simply lip-smacking! Waiting for the next opportunity to go back and have a try at all the desserts on the menu
I must say for people who want to have a break from the traditional food do visit this place for a wonderful experience.
My heartiest complements to the chef for such a wonderful meal!!!

Superbly Yummy!

Visited Herbs and Spice this afternoon. It's a small, unassuming place, light and airy (both of which are very important for me as I'm not a big fan of dark and dingy), lovely green ambiance. Loved the stone floor and the whitewashed walls.

We were served warm bread with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar accompaniment - very nice! The bread was fresh and nothing in the world tastes quite so nice or gives you such a warm 'all's right in the world feeling' as fresh, warm bread. Thank you Herbs and Spice.

I ordered the char-grilled red snapper fillet with a citrus sauce. Simply superb! A nice fillet of fish with a wonderfully light citrus and butter sauce which was just perfect - not too buttery or too citrusy! Tasted as good as what I'd had in Madeira, Portugal! The fish came with a portion of salad.

My friend ordered the penne with a grilled breast of chicken. The chicken was stuffed with sun dried tomatoes, cheese and asparagus. The chicken breast was supremely tender and the penne was al dente and came with cherry tomatoes, olives, capers and basil in olive oil!

We finished with their dessert - flour less, chocolate walnut tart and the Astrid cheesecake. Amazingly good. The cheesecake's not the usual one that's made of cream cheese - so if you're looking for that flavor you won't find it here. The Astrid cheesecake is baked and is a German recipe.

Overall, a great experience! Will definitely be visiting and recommending this place to everyone I know.

But wheres the seasoning?

Irony that a place called Herbs & Spice, but ends up tasting fairly bland. But this was the experience last night, where three of us went there for dinner. For some reason, either the seasoning was not right or completely missing.

It wasn't a busy night and we were seated immediately and ordered right away the main course -
the vegetarian Ravioli (white sauce) with spinach ad the thin crust pizza (9") with Spinach, olives and capsicum.
While the Ravioli was adequate (coule use with more flavoring and seasoning), the pizza was completely bland, to a point where we had to sprinkle salt and kick it up with chilli flakes and tobasco ( which is taking away from the original taste, but we did not have a choice).
The complimentarty bread basket was nice and warm pretty tasty, but whats up with the accompaniment?? - which was olive oil and get this... Soy sauce (was it soy sauce or was it some other dark vinegar type thing, not sure) - but it was a totally weird combination, made it too salty. I would stick to olive oil and maybe crushed garlic and salt and pepper. So yes, the olive oil mixture was terrible!!

but we managed to finish off everything, and decided to share a Ricotta and hazelnut cheesecake (type thingy) - again, it was stuck in a microwave and brought out to us, and taste completely wrong... not nearly as tempting as it had looked!!!

I will be fair and give this place another chance, they have a very interesting menu and the desserts looked delicious. But they have to do something to increase the taste content. But I will check out a few options before completing writing this pace off!!!

Thank you for your feedback.

My sincerest apologies that our food did not match your expectations. The accompaniment to the bread is olive oil and balsamic vinegar (a traditional Italian accompaniment) and has no salt whatsoever. We also offer another choice of herbed butter as accompaniment - do request us for that the next time you choose to visit us.

Our Ricotta and Hazelnut Cheesecake is made from a denser cheese (a consistency close to cottage cheese) - I'd appreciate it if you could let me know why it tasted wrong.

Not the service we've come to know

I haven't been to Herbs and Spice since they did the remodel, and I don't know if it's the additional tables or some other problem, but the service was not up to par on our lunch visit yesterday. We waited awhile to get menus and then to order. We asked for more bread that never arrived. There were 4 of us and 2 of the meals arrived, and 2 came about 15 minutes later after asking about them twice (one of the late dishes was my salad!) I'd asked for serrano ham to be added to the salad, something I always have, and it was not on the salad when it arrived. Two of us ordered dessert and coffee. Again one dessert arrived and 15 minutes later after 2 enquiries, the other one arrived. We had to ask 3 different people to get the check.

Awful experience

I visited their Indiranagar establishment today for dinner for the first time since they moved from the old location.

We ordered Pork Chops and Veg Lasagne for the main course. The Veg Lasagne was cold and had to be sent back. Waiting for someone to come by to tell them this took almost 15 minutes. The Pork Chops were tough and contained probably 10% meat and 90% fat. The accompanying mashed potatoes looked and tasted like they were leftovers from lunch. In addition, as no bread showed up along with the food, I asked if we needed to order it. The answer was no, they would get some, but nothing appeared even as we finished. The only thing that met expectations from dinner were the desserts. The live band was good but the music too loud for the small space, result was you couldnt hear anyone talk. All in all, a terrible experience and most disappointing compared to the old Herbs and Spice I was used to. The ambiance, loud music, awful service and poor quality food leaves me thinking that they have become just another pretentious place.

Grilled to Perfection !!

I had visited herbs & Spice last Sunday for their East-West grill off.Must say it was a fabulous affair with Manjit Singh ( herbs & spice) and Madhu menon (shiok) grilling out some of the juiciest Pork spare ribs,Beef, chicken & prawn. The whole thing was very well marinated with some of the best BBQ sauce to go along with it.The salads and mini ham burgers were also made to perfection. The icing on the cake of this deliciously smoky affair was the unlimited beer that flowed with it.Yes the desert was not upto the mark but when you get all the food and the beer for just Rs 699/- who's complaining ??

I get to hear that they are going to make this a regular affair on sundays with maybe a pasta station to go along with it. A must visit !!

The old place was great. It was cosy, warm and homely.
The food was quality maintained. It was a hidden gem for Italian food. But since its moved to the new place and grown, I miss the taste and cosy atmosphere. Its now like any other place with average taste and menu for decent price.
The desserts are the things you may order in herbs & spice

2 and a half stars, but only for dessert.

After hearing so much about the place, you have high expectations, and this place certainly didnt live up to them.
The meat was cold, the vegetables oily and charred and the service was bad.The place probably has its faithful regulars from when it was a small place in Indiranagar years ago.

What you shouldnt miss though is the Eggless chocolate cake, which is quite nice. The staff could use some motivation, and the food some seasoning.
Overall, not worth a second visit.

High expectations can lead to disappointment

I wouldn't say the food is anything special at Herbs & Spice. Although a number of people have told me to give it a try, I found it to be just average. We ordered the garlic tiger prawns, beer-battered calamari, roast beef in red wine sauce, and the pork spare ribs. Everything was just a bit overcooked. The prawns tasted a little bit burnt, the calamari was extra extra crispy from the deep frier, and the meat entrees were a bit too well-done for our liking. Even the side of vegetables was a depressing shade that occurs when over-boiled.

I do give a thumbs up to the ambiance. Herbs & Spices is a very relaxed outdoor restaurant, which I prefer, where the wait staff isn't overly or under attentive and you can enjoy mellow blues music in the background.

Good Dining Experience

Went to Herbs and Spices to celebrate my husband's bday and both of us fell in love with the place. The ambience is very nice and pleasing. We had Beer marinated chicken wings with salsa brava and Pizzette to start with. I had fish in hoisander sauce and my husband had pork ribs with honey, mashed potatoes and a salad. Both the dishes were excellent. The fish was flavourful and the pork ribs were just right. We ended the meal with a chocolate mousse cake. All in all a nice dining experience.

Lost charm!

My girlfriends and I decided to a small reunion over casual cocktails/ mocktails and dinner last month at the recently renovated Herbs and Spices at Indranagar! We were regulars at the small set up they had earlier!
I must say the new ambience was definitely warm and inviting.

We were served a small platter of 'fresh' bread as compliments of the house but believe me it was no compilment at all. The bread was rather stale and the accompaniment terrible. We ignored it and went on to order finger food and drinks! Peach 'fizz', Iced teas, sauted mushrooms and large stuffed olives were on our list.
We were served our drinks a tad too late and the appetizers were a disaster. The iced teas had no hint of tea or sugar and the peach drink was overwhelmingly sweet!
The sauteed mushrooms were barely sauted but just sprinkled with peppers and chilli flakes. The serving of stuffed olives was apalling and tasteless.

We instantly considered paying up and moving to a better place but reluctantly decided that the main course might work for us.
We were ready to order and just as we were, the table next to us threw a fit and sent the food back saying it was 'atrocious'.
It's easy to guess what happened next..

Yes we paid (~700) and moved to High note and we loved it!

I would like to point out that Herbs and Spice has NEVER served or had peach fizz iced tea on its menu! While our service may have been slow, we do stand by our stuffed olives and sauteed mushrooms. Our stuffed olives in particular have won rave reviews from a lot of customers - they couldn't have been tasteless as the olives are marinated in brine and come stuffed with red chillies and garlic.

A long wait

Never go here if you are very hungry. You will have to wait for a really long time to get the food you ordered. I have been here quite a few times and every time I've had to wait for around than 30 mins even for the starters/drinks to come. The last time I went there, we had to wait for more than 50 mins. On enquiring, it turned out that our order had not been placed at all. The management was absolutely not bothered when they were informed of this and just continued about their business.
The ambience is nice, the food ok-ok, but the bad service takes away from it.
Wouldnt recommend this to anyone.

Not that great anymore...

We followed up on our first visit to this place to a completely contrasting experience! We were thrilled the first time with the service, taste and portions that Herbs & Spice offered. On the second visit we found some part of the menu had changed, The taste and portions both had taken a ride downhill. Seemed to me that most stuff we ordered was drenched in olive oil and quite bland. The only saving grace was the cheesecake that we ordered for dessert - absolutely heavenly! All in all, a visit that left us yearning for the Herbs & Spice of old.

Lipsmacking Italiano

Manjit Singh has reinvented alfresco dining with his new-found location for his expanded cafe style restaurant Herbs & Spice on 80 ft Road. Gone is the black-board spelling out the changing daily fare squiggled in chalk, and instead a rotational menu that is supposed to take into account seasonality and availability has been designed to make guests feel at home. With an array of main courses including steaks, pastas, sandwiches and quiche to decadent desserts, the restaurant has added a tapas list that is unfortunately rather disappointing.

Personally speaking by increasing the number of total dishes available per day, the quality of the old Herbs & Spice has suffered immensely. Several visits have left me unable to order the dish I want for lack of ingredients available - special mention to the wild mushroom ravioli (porcini, shiitake, chanterelle) that is hard to come by.

The salads are great here, above from the one with figs and the other with walnut and pear, the grilled halloumi salad with asparagus, zucchini and arugula is wonderful.

The rib-eye was full of tendons, making the eat impossible to cut, so eating it was not an option. I sent it back to the kitchen and opted for the Beef steak stuffed with ham, cheese and spinach - a real winner, cooked a perfect medium-rare as I asked, and a great cut of tender steak! Bravo Manjit!

Herbs and spices, how can they have the same name

I lived in whitefeild for a while and used to frequent herbs and spices there. I thought it was the same here and was dissappointed it wasn't. I don't know how different people can have the same name for a restaurant. Is it allowed in this country.
The Pizza was very good. Well ,all the pizzas we oredered were good, even the vegetarian ones. The rest of the food was not so good. The coffee was ok. I was ok with all this, but the service was bad. May be it was a bad day for them or may be it was because we were the only people there... and they didn't want to seem eager.

Quite good food

I have been going to Herbs and spices since they were in their old place and I do like the food here.
I was there again quite recently and thought this time I will write the review of this place.

One thing I really like in this place is the bread basket . The food was not to the same standards as I was used which was a bit dissapointing and we had to wait for a quite a long time before the food was served. As usual I liked the pizza in this place. Love the chicken and basil pizza. Also one of my other favorites is the smoked chicken salad. What I did not like were the pastas. One was without salt and tasted very bland and the other was very spicy.

I like the ambiance , and service is ok. They have started serving drinks here which is another plus. The prices are not very steep and worth for the food that is served.

One the whole it will still be a place were I go to once every couple of months.

Veg Sandwiches not so good

I've been here a few times and just love the place. The food is quite good. My wife and I are pure vegetarians and found that the food is a bit lacking in that aspect. My brother, who quite loves his meat enjoyed the food and the ambience so much, he has been coming here regularly with his friends who are now quite regular here themselves. :-)

The veg sandwiches in question took 30 minutes to arrive and were, believe it or not, a big soggy after being toasted. The long wait followed by the sandwich falling apart as we held it in our hands, didn't feel as good.

Please don't get me wrong. The food is excellent. How much I enjoy the meal is more important that the taste of the food itself. In this case, I found the meal tasty but the experience ended up being quite mixed.

Great place for simple, fresh Italian

My wife and I just returned from a great dinner at Herbs and Spices - our first visit there. We went with a number of starters rather than main courses and all the dishes we ordered are very good. Crisp and flavorful calamari and a lovely fig and mozzarella salad. The grilled tiger prawns were also very good. The only average dish was the fish fingers - good, but a bit too oily. We ended the meal with the chocolate fondant (you have to order it 30 mins in advance) to die for. Nice, friendly service and a good ambience. Overall, one of the nicest meals I've had in Bangalore (and the first time I felt moved to to write an online review).

Do come and visit us again as we have a nice specials menu this month (Feb 2010) that consists of char-grilled red snapper in a butter and citrus sauce a fresh tomato and sweet chili pepper soup and more.

Awesome Pasta!!

Thank you for your feedback. I notice you've written that your second experience was not so consistent as your first one. Again, just want to reiterate that we try very hard to keep our food and service levels consistent.

It was always great, but now it also LOOKS great!

I have been eating at Herbs and Spices since it opened years ago in the small bungalow off CMH and 100 Ft road. That was always a sure bet for food, but the place itself kinda made you feel like you were putting someone out as it seemed almost like a home. Their new location has all the old favorites, lots of new things (in fact if you have not been there in January 2009, Manjit has lots of new surprises), and it a gorgeous space. Same simple but elegant decor, lots of light and air as it is essentially a patio. This is the kind of space that Bar-B-Que Nation concept should be in (but they are so far from the concept of BBQ, space is the last of their worries).

I recommend the meats here, but really everything is great. Sizes are of the portion size that can be easily shared, but if your eating partner is like my wife, then I would just order another as he/she will likely gobble it all down before you look around for it.

I actually really like most of their pasta's also, though I am just not a fan of creme based sauces so I stay away from that.

Oh yeah, one thing that is not well known is that they are open all day. They have an in-between menu from 3:30-7pm that is awesome sandwiches and small dishes. This is also very reasonable. Great place for larger office get-togethers as well.

It's got my vote!

Herbs & Spice had me the moment I stepped into the restaurant. Granted it's pretty and all, what with its warm lighting, open-to-the-air balcony type seating, chalkboard menu etc; but ambience alone does not a restaurant make. At the end of the day, it's the food that matters. And boy, is it good here!!

The menu here is limited, but for very good reason. Each dish on this menu is worth 3 others on an unnecessarily fluffed out menu elsewhere.

The starters & salads are all delicious and big enough to share if you intend to have an entree and dessert to follow. I personally love their ham, fig &mozzarella crostini & the simple (yet delicious) melon & Serrano ham salad.

As for the entrees, I think you'll find it hard to go wrong with their meat based entrees. The chefs here certainly know how to make meat work. I've only ever tasted one entree that could be called so-so and that was a stuffed chicken breast dish that one of my friends ordered. It was dry and a tad bit overcooked, but that's been the only time I've had cause to make complaining noises.

It's in the dessert section that H&S truly outdoes itself. The walnut meringue really is their signature dessert and while it's not always consistent in quality, even on a bad day it is a *very* good dessert. On a good day though, it's like tasting heaven on a plate. Give good sense and calorie counting a miss and get yourself one of each dessert that looks good in the counter. You won't regret it.

They also do a good snack time menu between 3 and 6 pm. The sandwiches are full and hearty and just the right thing to satisfy those late afternoon hunger pangs.

For a restaurant that makes food this wholesome and tasty, I think the cost factor is extremely reasonable. A meal for two with 2 starters, 2 entrees and 2 desserts will cost you around Rs.1200. Of course you could get cheaper (and nowhere near as good) continental food elsewhere if you wanted to, but why on Earth would you?

lovely.....

the new location on 80ft road is quite kid friendly. That was one of our concerns when eating here over the weekend with a boisterous 14-month old.
We got in at 6.30 in the evening-not dinner time which i believe is 7pm. Our snacks consisted of the goat cheese artichoke sandwich, a tomato and leek quiche and a mortadella sandwich, the latter tasting juicy and fresh. the breadbasket was out of this world, the sourdough being the centrepiece with a lovely bitter taste to it. The goat cheese tasted fresh (probably store-bought, but who's complaining?), the quiche a little heavy with a strong edam(?) flavour-a bit overpowering for me.
This plus a glass of beer, a sweet lime and tea came up to 800 - not terribly expensive considering the quality, but not very light on the pocket either.

Here are my suggestions for Manjeet

1. I'd have preferred the sandwiches to be priced in the 100-130 range.
2. The tea definetely needs some work. It was not very different from a dip tea you get anywhere else. You could ask the waiter to get the bag along with the tea, not in it. Also, if you could provide a variety of exotic teas - darjeeling, nilgiri silvertips, kenyan, etc, that would really hit it off, blending well with the niche food you offer.
3. I had no fresh juice available when we walked in. A definite no-no, especially if you're dishes are so great.
4. The artichokes tasted canned. When you can get this most of the time in russel market, you could use these instead.

otherwise, this is definitely a place i would go to for a larger meal, possibly a dinner

Unnecessarily expensive!!

This was my second visit to this restaurant and both the visits confirm one thing. This place is for the expat crowd who dont mind paying an obscene amount to get a taste of authentic food.

A spartan meal for two without any drinks and dessert could easily cost 800 and above and if you decide to go a little easy then god save you!.

Neither the quality nor the quantity justify the obscene prices. Moreover the chefs conviniently change the dish to their liking irrespective of what you might have ordered and if you feel short changed thats your problem

We ordered lamb chops and two portions of smoked chicken salad for starters. The lamb comes first and we are just dazed and amused. It had 4 one sq inch sized thin chops which was very coarse and tough to eat. it was just plain mockery of the order.

Next was the smoked chicken salad, you would hve thought that chicken was tossed with the leaves but this is where you are mistaken, only the slivers present on top for garnishing are the only pieces of chicken you would see. as for the cheese less said the better, the local darshini provides more cheese in their vegetable sandwich than what we got on this salad.

On our last visit i had ordered grilled chicken stuffed with edam cheese and wife ordered spagetti with basil pesto sauce. the chicken was tough and burnt to the extent of tasting a little bitter and wife's spagetti turned out to be made with cheese base with no hint of basil!

This is the last time for me in this restaurant unless some rich expat friend of mine decides to treat me there!!!!

Thank you for your feedback. We'd like to disagree with you. Our prices are not so steep that only an expat crowd can afford it. Our regular Indian patrons will confirm it. As for your comment on the darshini cheese - we DON'T make sandwiches darshini style! We are a restaurant that serves European food and that includes the cheese and the amount we use in the dish!

Average food

We went to this place once at the old location and once more recently at the new location. This time work was still going on and it was really noisy and we had to ask them to stop for fear of getting a headache. The noise stopped after a good 15 mins. It was a warm day outside and since the place is on a covered terrace, the hot sunlight came streaming in and the fans were inadequate.
Now for the food. We first had a forgettable shrimp starter then ordered pork chops and a tortellini dish with clams (don't remember the exact description).
The pork chops were good but the tortellini was entirely different from what was described in the menu. The stuffing was completely different and there was no sign of any clams. I felt cheated and even though we complained about it, no one bothered to come over and apologise or rectify it.

Thank you for your feedback. The noise levels were beyond our control as the restaurant below (that is not part of Herbs and Spice) was undergoing renovation.

We're ensuring that our food and service levels stay consistent.

Great Value

Herbs and Spice is a lovely neighbourhood place in Indiranagar. The food is good, but still reasonably priced. It's run by two guys who seem to know what they're doing. Definitely worth a visit. Superb decor, as well!

Great place!

I loved my dinner at this place on a friday night. First of all, it;'s not very crowded and has a nice simple decor.. I loved teh white textured walls against the spartan furniture.

The first thing they serve you is a basket of assorted breads.. For main course, my boyfriend had fillet-o-fish on a base of mashed potato while I had the bacon lafelle (something like that). Both of the dishes were very tasty and the quantity was GOOD. They serve the dish along with some geen veggies on the side which makes the food rich in fibre as well.

My only grouse about this place is that they don't have printed menus. They write the menu on a big blackboard.. but most of it gets crammed and you are not able to read it easily so you end up relying on the judgement of your waiter..

In any case, this place is a must-go for people who want to spend under 300 bucks for a meal and get good value for money. They get my thumbs up!

Good Italian food, quiet location

First The location - since its not very easy to find with just the address: On 100 ft Rd. in Indranagar, travel north (towards the old madras rd.). After KFC and just before the Dominos pizza (which will be on your left side) you will see a little lane. Turn left into that lane and then take the 2nd right (which is the 7th cross) all the way to the T-junction. The restaurant will be on your right side.

Food: Pretty good. These guys know how to bring out the true Italian flavor (using olive oil, oregano and basil). I find that many of the other so-called italian restaurants don't really know what italian dining is about. I had the spinach and cheese ravioli in tamato-basil pesto. Came with a little salad and an assortment of good breads. I asked for a little butter as well (they gave me some shavings of butter ... I would have liked to have more but didn't want to be too pushy). I did see a display case of deserts but some of them didn't look fresh so I avoided desert.

Environment: Small and pretty plain, but clean. Not crowded at all during dinner time. If the environment was a little fancier, it would be ideal place to spend time with your date. Menu on chalk board could use better handwriting skills. There are about 15 entrees listed - about half of them veg).

Cost: All entrees range around Rs. 200 to Rs 250 (would give it a $$$ for cost rating). The portion sizes aren't sufficient for a large guy like me .. but it seems all Italian and other non-indian cuisine restaurants are guilty about this. More like a large snack rather than dinner (i.e., no burrps here).

Excellent

This place is well worth a visit. A little difficult to find but really worth looking for. Simple and tasty. And unlike many of the Italian restos in this city or country - its not overpriced and the quantities are more than adequate.

Superb Italian, perfect salads

This little eatery with a menu written on a blackboard offers the real deal for lovers of Italian food.

Located on a quite residential area off 100 ft road in Indiranagar, the decor here is basic and reminded me of a neighbourhood pizzeria or diner. A partial view of the kitchen with swing doors which lead to it, lots of wood, and an unevenly painted blue wall create a somewhat rustic, country and homely feel to the place. Loaves of bread are arranged in wicker baskets while the glass display case offers a view of homemade cakes and desserts.

We started our meal with a mushroom soup - I give it five stars - it was fantastic. We also tried the spinach soup - green and healthy - but I found it a little too raw-veggie-flavoured for my taste. The most perfect part of the meal was the salads. First one - pears, walnuts, argula and parmesan - luscious, juicy pears and crunchy walnuts in a bed of fresh lettuce! The second - I think this is probably the best salad I have had in Bangalore - figs, mozzarella and mixed greens in the most perfect citrus flavoured dressing ever! The salads come with a nice bread basket.

For the main course, we tried the smoked chicken and mozzarella sandwich and the grilled chicken stuffed with herb pesto. My vote goes for the second – it was really good with a sides of a salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green peppers) and just-cooked carrots and green beans. The sandwich was ok.

For dessert, we had the chocolate éclair and the chocolate fondue with icecream. The chocolate éclair was yummy with dense chocolate between homemade chocolate cake slices. The chocolate fondue had an half an hour of waiting time and was good, but not great.

The restaurant has a friendly, informal ambiance. However, service can be much better. The owner was great, but the rest of the staff need some training. The waiter seemed to mumble through any questions we asked about the menu and had a “I could care less” attitude. We initially ordered for the chocolate éclair and another dessert (I forget the name) which did not require us to wait. After ten minutes, we got our order of the éclair but no sign of the other dessert. After I called the waiter and asked him about it, he very sheepishly told us it was over. He should have told us about it immediately after we placed the order but did not think it necessary to do so until I asked him about it. Maybe he thought we would forget?

Parking is available on the road outside the restaurant. Herbs and Spice is a good option to visit with family and friends. Do make reservations, it tends to get crowded at peak hours.

authentic Italian in unpretentious surroundings

OK, so this joint is not going to win a prize for atmosphere anytime soon. But please, don't let the spartan decorations and the fact that the daily meanu is written on a chalk board on the wall fool you... this place is the real deal.

Herbs and Spice is tucked away on a ittly bitty, half torn up side street near 100 ft. road. The good news is that parking is not much of a problem here as it can be in other areas of Indiranagar. When you walk in, you'll notice a few plain tables and chairs. Don't wait for the staff to bring you a menu... it's on the wall!

Here you will find authentic italian food, served in it's most unpretentious form. As an italian (yes, my family is from Italy) I really appreciate this place. Simple pastas, pizza, salads and meat dishes make up the majority of the menu. There is always a good mix of veg and non-veg.

I suggest you start with a green salad. They have a wonderful choice with mixed greens, pears, walnuts and parmesan cheese which is tossed with a zesty lemony dressing. There is also a lovely arugula salad with figs and fresh mozzerella. Either choice is amazing... fresh and crunchy with complex tastes. Big enough to share if you're not a hufe eater, and certainly large enough for a lunch when paired with the complementary bread basket they offer.

Entrees usually offer 4-5 pastas, a risotto (a creamy rice dish that is a staple in Italy), one beef option, one chicken option, sometimes a pork option, quiche (not really Italian, but who's complaining?) and a couple pizzas. Most of the pasta options are veg, and offer a wide variety of tastes. For example, last night they had a lasagna with asparagus, a pasta primavera, ravioli with basil and fresh mozzerella, and at least 3 other choices I cannot remember. You won't be disappointed in the choices.

I have tried nearly everything on the menu. Last night my husband and I split a salad and then a pizza, which contained potatoes, rosemary and arugula, which is a bitter lettuce. This type of pizza is common in northern italy, and contains no red sauce. It's not your typical pizza, but it is delicious. They got the tastes just right.. the thin crust, the aromatic rosemary. They just need to add a bit more salt to the pizza dough. On other visits I have had numerous kinds of pastas, which were all very good. I will say that the dishes that I have had which contained chicken left me a tad disappointed. I think they could do a bterr job seasoning the meat and not over-cooking it. But the beef I have had there was exceptional, and my husband has enjoyed all the veg options, especially the penne arabiata (penne with spicy tomato sauce).

I will tell you that if you're looking for indianized italian, this is not the place for you. They play by italian rules, which means the pasta is cooked "al dente" (which means that it's still a bit undercooked, as is the custom in Italy). The sauces are aromatic and flavorful, but might lack the punch that many Indian palates are used to. My suggestion is to give it a try. Just please do not ask for ketchup when you order a pizza.

Oh, and dessert! Wander over to the dessert case and pay attention to the 7-8 choices on display. My favorite is the walnut merengue. Sadly I have not been able to pull myself away from it to try anything else. But you should!
