Waste of money. Worst service. Serve cold food.

Hi All,
It was a horrible experience in Mainland China Indira Nagar that I will remember always and will never go back there. On 12th December, I took my wife to Main Land China on 100 feet road Indira Nagar Branch, Bangalore for a lunch. It was our little one's 1st birthday which we were celebrating that day. My wife insisted she want to have chinese food. I thought of taking them to Church Street branch as I went there many times before and I liked it. But it was already 1:30 pm when we started. So, we decided to go to Indira Nagar branch instead as it would be nearer than Church street and I can get space to park my vehicle where in Church street there is very less chance. We reached there on time and decided to have buffet lunch. And to our surprise, everything from service to food were below standard.

Starters were served. The guy who was serving had lot of attitude in him as if he is going to pay our bill. There was no minimum courtesy, no smile. Only 3 items were served. Dimsum, soup and wings. When he was serving the starters, we have to tell him repeatedly to bring the dimsum. He was just ignoring as if he has not listen. I have to ask him on top of my voice again. After that he served it twice after a long wait each time. That too he brought only 4 pieces. It was not that there was lot of items in starters and we only asked for dimsum. Each items were served after a long time wait. There was no order of offering the starters. I am not sure if they serve like that. But soup was served later than the other item.

Then come to the main course. We went to pick the main course one by one as one has to hold our little 1 year old. To our surprise, very less food were kept in the vessels. Almost everything were empty. We can see the bottom of the vessel. Other items too were very less. I didn't see those were filled again. Salads were almost empty. Foods were almost getting cold even though they were put on a electric hot plate. Probably because the amount were lesser. Looking at the food, we didn't feel like going back again. And almost getting late as we have already spent lot of time having starters waiting for dimsum .

Now comes dessert section. Items which were finished were not filled back. Ice creams boxes were almost empty and whatever were there turned hard ice. We could not even have them.

The birthday celebration has already turned disaster and we even lost the intention to complain back at that time. I told my wife let's get out of here as soon as possible and otherwise our evening celebration will also get spoiled. We paid around 1300 for 2 person for that kind of food which was a total waste. We could have gone to a better place to spend for food for that much of money.

I will suggest everyone, never go to this place. Food is below standard. Service is worst. It is just waste of money.

Good experience

I have been to Mainland China (across the city in different locations) a handful of times and the experience has always been good. I personally am not a huge fan of Chinese cuisine but I can safely say that Mainland China serves the best Chinese food in town. They have a good range of starters and soups (even for the veggies) and the fried rice is always prepared exquisitely. They also have a lunch buffet where in the spread is quite good. Overall, I would recommend Mainland China as the place to head to if you are in the mood for some good Chinese food. The food might be slightly on the expensive side but you will not be disappointed.

Best chinese at a premium price

This place has the best and the largest variety of chinese cusine I have ever had. I loved the spl. Chicken noodle soup and the veg manchurian they made on my girlfriends demand. The buffet is very nice but pricey.

Overall, I have found the buffet more wallet friendly compared to ala carte fare. However, it is a tad pricier than normal Chinese joints, which is expected.

The decor and ambience are nice, and service is extraordinarily good.

Very very average

I and a friend of mine went to Mainland China Indiranagar on a weekday for lunch buffet. EVERY item kept there was so cold. The food was kept on utensils which were on something that looked like automatic controlled heaters. I don't see the need for them as not one item was served hot. Food was very average. And i heard from a friend that the desert spread was very lavish. But all i could find was cut fruits and a single pastry dish. And ice cream i think. But that's hardly what u expect when u are paying more than 500 for a buffet.
Pretty disappointing indeed.

Food loaded with MSG!!!

We went to the thinking that we would be able to eat some authentic chinese dishes, but it was very disappointing that the food was over loaded with MSG (Monosodium glutamate) / Ajinomoto. Moreover the accompaniments were very salty especially the stir fried chilly shrimp and the golden corn, broccoli & cucumber stir fry. The restaurant must not resort to enhancing the taste of the food using MSG, else there would be not difference between 'Mainland China' and any other XYZ... chinese restaurant.

first time Great food with a value for money

I always are used to having the sichwan or hunan sauces but today we decided to go for our team lunch as usual, so we hoped for Mainland china, the place was crowded we had to wait for a table, we opted for buffet we were taken to the first floor, the starters were served on the table, the main course was great I tried to remembered two dishes as i have not eaten some thing like this before in Chinese, it was vegetables pickle chilli & chicken pixiang sauce i remembered this dishes as it liked the dishes, i even checked with the manager if these dishes were only on the buffet he mentioned no its on the regular menu,
The service was great as they were quick & friendly.....

WOW!

I say WOW in a negative way. The food was not chinese at all. One does not have to be a chinese connessiour to see that the food was more indian than Chinese. I understand a restaurant bending the rules a bit for people who have to stay with in their culiary comfort zone. But this was ridiculous. I went upstairs to the buffet on a sunday for lunch. Everything smelled and tasted like india food. Even the large fried shrimp chips did not have the light texture of the chips that I have tasted in other restaurants.
I guess I was expecting more for all the advertising they do.

The service was rushed also.

Mediocre Service

We 3 went to Mainland China, Indiranagar on 19th February, we first ordered Chinese tea followed by main course but Chinese tea never came and no one asked us again. We also decided not to ask as main course was served after a long time of our order. Initially there was too many people to serve but later we had to serve ourselves as no one was around. Food was good. Quantity was also pretty decent. But service was below par compare to the reputation and charges

Good Chinese Food but Expensive.

In my limited visits to Main Land China, Indiranagar, I have found the Food to be quite good ( if you take the suggestion from the Serving Staff). The ambiance is quite okay & the Staffs are absolutely well behaved but ,may be due to a busy day, are sometimes aloof. I think on a week day it'd not be a problem. The spread is good and some times they do have add on menus. Do have good cocktails. The only pain is that the restaurant is overly expensive. Average expense for 2 will be min 2K if you do a normal 2/3 course. If you like to booze and eat.. think again. (unless you are too rich) :)

Really good.

One of the best Chinese restaurants.
Try the selection of dumplings, prawns in butter and garlic, burnt-garlic fried rice, chicken-coriander soup, spring rolls.
Reservations are advised on weekdays and crucial on weekends.

Imressive service

I have been to Mainland china in Indira Nagar recently. The service was extremely good. We got to order some starters and main course with the help of the host. All the items were nice. I had a 4 year old one with me and she was not really impressed with the menu as she did not got a non spicy item. The chicken item we ordered turned out to be sweet and she did not like it. The second item turned out to be spicy for her eventhough marked less spicey. It would have been better if they had a kid friendly menu or marking in the menu.
They are pricey but the quantity served is more compared to The tables were too close to each other and it could be quiet annoying on a busy weekend for a fine dine. For the price you pay, you may be able to choose a restaurant, which will give you more room.
The service was very impressive. One of the best in the class. Two people dining can easily cost you above 1500 in this restaurant. If you dont mind the price, this is one of the best chinese restautant available in town.

Highly over priced!

We went there a couple of months ago to celebrate a birthday in the family. The food and ambience was decent but way too over priced! I mean appetizers for 350-400 a dish ? You've got to be kidding me. They were good but certainly not good enough for the prices that they charge. I understand all restaurants have their profit margins and I'm not cheap by any means but I did feel a bit conned when we left (and I wasn't even the one footing the bill!). That's what matters in the end. VFM - Value for money. We were 6 of us and the bill came to around 7K without any drinks. Considering the ok decor, average service and good-but-not-great food I dont see myself coming here again. I'm giving it 2 stars only for the food which was nice - just nothing to write home about. Just my 2 cents. Thanks!

Food - Good... but Offer??

Last night was my birthday and so we decided to have dinner at a place we've never tried before. Mainland China was on my mind because I keep getting these mailers from my credit card banker HSBC about the tie-up with Mainland China for this exclusive offer. Just go to hsbc.co.in and go to the special offers and discounts tab. They have the Mainland China offer of Emperor's Feast for just Rs. 525. We asked the waiter and he says there's no such offer. We did not want to spoil the night, so we ignored the offer and ordered whatever we liked. Food was good in terms of taste and presentation. We ordered 3 starters - Cantonese prawn rolls, a smoky chicken with chillies and peanuts dish, and a crispy babycorn dish. All were good. For main course we tried the crabmeat fried rice, a soy based chicken with cashewnuts and another dish called singoi chicken (i think). Finally for dessert, we ordered an orange creme brulee, chocolate spring rolls with vanilla ice cream and a sizzling brownie with chocolate sauce. Service was also good, unlike the English speaking issues mentioned in previous posts. Maybe staff has been replaced now. Finally we ended up paying a hefty sum of nearly 4700 rupees. But what the hell, its just once in a while. We'll be back probably next year for another birthday.

Food was awesome, but cannot speak english!!!!

except one, noone else knows english and i struggled to make them understad what i needed. I was astounded to see a restaurant in Bangalore which has servants speaking NO english. Food was awesome, no second thoughts about that.. but they should get people who can speak english to make it much more comfortable for customers..

A different experience this time!

I have been a regular in Mainland China over the years. Have always been a chinese food lover and Mainland China is really the only place I would prefer to satiate my 'chinese' apetitie.

However, Mainland China in Indranagar is beginning to become a dissapointment of sorts! Not really on the food end, but in its service at the reception itself!

Firstly, I have no idea why most restaurants have started employing people from the North East of India. They are absolutely inaudible and do not understand English most of the time! I had booked a table for 3 @ 1.30 pm on 24th of this month and when I reached the restaurant promptly, I was made to wait 45 mins till we were escorted to a table. The very concept of reserving tables seemed to be lost with the Management of this outlet!!

However, the buffet was at its usual best and the waiters (most of them know me) fussed around enough for me to really sit back and enjoy a good meal!

Mainland China improves - great weekend buffet

Few months back, I wrote a bad review of Mainland China Indiranagar complaining about seafood that is not fresh and marinated with vinegar. Their management contacted me and asked me to return there stating that they will correct the seafood problem. Honestly, i didn't think they will change anything there. But to my pleasant surprise, the food quality has improved over there. the fish and prawns no longer smell of vinegar. The weekend buffet was also good with a nice crab dish. May be they could have added a bit more desserts. But overall a great experience this time around. I'm yet to try out the a-la-carte menu there in their "new avatar". But I'll soon try that out and I hope that the food will be equally good.

Not value for money, esp for Veggies

Mainland China's buffet is very costly going upto 500 bucks the last time I visited, and food stuff is not upto mark. I visited 5 months back near the domlur Mainland China and did not particularly liked the place. Things might have changed now.

First of all almost all the starters were cold, and one of the starters was cabbage in tomato sauce (i was a bit shocked). Momos and noodles were very ordinary and one may get better food at some small Chinese restaurants down CMH road. I could not find any dish catering specifically to tastes of vegetarians. Service is okayish but then 500 bucks per head is a very high price for service only. Non veggies may enjoy some sea-food or something there, can't comment on that, but for veggies Mainland China is not worth it. I won't say its a bad restaurant but definitely not value for money.

Bad Food. Medoicre Service. Great Variety.

I decided to revisit Mainland China after a break of 20 months since my previous visit was not a good experience. Well, I discovered that Mainland Chine have gone from bad to worse - as I spent the next 24 hours with a bad case of food poisoning.

Anyways, back to the details ... We decided to go with their Weekend lunch buffet at Rs. 600 a head (after taxes). The starters were ok, though a couple of them could have been fresh. We were disappointed with the momos, which were cold and tasteless. The main buffet had a wide variety - but the items were not being replenished quickly enough or kept fresh. And I am not sure of the quality of their seafood, since I had the crab and shrimp and then fell severely ill with food poisoning the same evening. My spouse, who did not have any seafood, also fell mildly ill after the meal.

Well this could have been a one-off incident, but I experienced this on both my previous visits to Mainland China, and hence would not visit this place again. There are a lot other excellent Chinese restaurants in Bangalore.

Good Place

This is my second visit here and I was quite surprised and pleased to note that they have expanded considerably. There is now a first and I understand a second floor in this restaurant. My friend and I were seated on the first floor by the very pleasant host. No sooner were we seated, than a waiter approached us with the drinks and food menus. Deciding against a drink, we looked carefully through the food menu and soon had our choices made. However, as the things I chose (a Duck appertizer and a Crab Soft Shell appetizer) were not available, we settled for Prawn Spring Rolls and Prawns in a delicious sauce (I have forgotten what exactly) as our appetizers. My friend also ordered a Sweetcorn and Crab soup. As we were not hungry, we decided against main courses. While waiting for the appetizers to arrive, we nibbled our way through the complimentary entree of pickled cabbage and slowly began to wend our way through a pot of Chinese tea, which a waiter had very thoughtfully offered to us. The appetizers when they came, tasted absolutely amazing and we enjoyed every mouthful. I then requested the menu again and chose dessert - Hot Chocolate Rolls with Vanilla Icecream. The rolls arrived in a short while and were accompanied by two small bowls, one which had chocolate sauce and one which had caramel sauce. I absolutely enjoyed these and even spooned up the last drop of both sauces. My view of the place is that it has excellent food. The chef here is someone to hold on tight to as he clearly knows his job. The service is excellent. The waiters are politeness personified and very discreet. The ambience isn't too wonderful. Infact, I didn't see a Chinese theme at all on the first floor, where we sat. The prices are quite high but as the food is beyond reproach they can be forgiven. The crowd is really nice and the place is packed. A reservation here, on a Saturday night especially, would probably be the best and safest route to garunteeing a table. Oh and arriving on time of course. One suggestion to the owners if they are reading this, is to please try as far as possible to ensure that you have in your kitchen the ingredients needed to prepare all the dishes on the menu. This is an "upmarket" joint and it is never a good idea to have a customer who is even slightly disappointed, if it can be avoided. Duck and Soft shelled crab, in my book aren't seasonal and a stock of them could certainly be kept.

If you order the Beijing duck, you can expect to have 3 dishes! First some rolls with the duck skin, then a duck soup, and finally the duck meat with rice.

Tasty Food, Quickly Served, Bit Costly...

We went for a buffet lunch in a group of 12. We had a prior booking . The service was super quick for the starter items. Starters and deserts were pretty good and tasty, eventhough the main course was just-a-usual kind of one. The ambience is just as it used to be in other mainland china hotels and is good.

Share:

Loaded buffet

Okay, this restaurant might not be *authentic* Chinese, more like Indo-Chinese and a very good one at that.

I've only been for the lunch buffets and they are loaded. They load up your plate with lots of starters and soup, which in itself is a meal. And then there's the actual buffet to be tackled!! :) The dessert section too has good variety. Service was super prompt and the place is formal enough to take your office gang/clients, but also casual enough to go with family without feeling out of place.

I would suggest skipping breakfast if you want to do justice to their buffet.

Average Food, Poor Service, Declining Decor

I went there for lunch yesterday. The Maitre D' looked bored, which , as it turned out, was just a sign of things to come.

2 of us, sat upstairs and instead of the buffet, opted for A la carte.

Service was horrendous. I had to gesticuate wildly and shout excuse me, before a waiter showed up. He then sullenly stood behind me and seemed completely disinterested in the process.
After I told him that I was not happy with the service things improved. The food was not too bad - the noodles were good, the chicken was reasonable and the dumplings and sauce were good.
This has the potential to be a good restaurant, and I think the chefs so far are doing alright. but I suspect that something is wrong with the management - the place is gently sliding into decrepitude and unless something changes, I will avoid going back. After all, a lunch for 2 without drinks came to Rs 1500, and for that money I expect not just good food but a decent ambience and better service.
So long, Mainland.

Good Chinese food for home delivery

I've ordered home delivery several times from Mainland China and I've always been pleased. Dishes always arrive warm and fresh, with lots of extra sauces and condiments included. My favorite dish is their sweet and sour chicken, it's just like sesame chicken. I was disappointed by the General Tso's, a classic dish in the US, that is varied at every chinese restaurant I've been to in India and usually not very good. I wonder why that is? Anyways, Mainland China offers a nice variety of non veg and veg options, including tofu, which I love.

I've never been to the restaurant itself so can't comment on the service or the decor but have been more than satisfied with the home delivery.

A bad place for seafood

I have been to this Indiranagar outlet of Mainland China numerous times. Mainly we go there for the weekend buffet. The weekend buffet is good, given the price. But this more of an average place. The seafood is kind of bad. They marinate the seafood with white vinegar to get the smell out. One may wonder why would seafood be smelly enough to be dipped in vinegar. I tasted vinegar in every fish and prawns I tried there. When I asked an waiter about this, he confirmed my guess. I think the outlet at Church street is probably better than this one. If you are looking for good quality oriental cuisine in Indiranagar area, you can try out Ginseng (@Royal Orchid). However, Mainland China has the best dimsums and in the buffet you can taste as many dimsums as you want.

Succulent dimsums and yummy general tao's chicken

Mainland China Rocks!

We had the basil flavoured dimsums, sui mai and another veg dimsum which were super! The vegetable clear soup was light and yet full of flavour. We also had egg friedrice, hakka noodles, general tao's favourite chicken (also our favourite) and corn and potato. All in all a very nice meal!

Good Gesture

We are quite regular here and all the time almost all the dishes are good.
We ordered picking duck and as the waiter told it will take around 45 mins time ,so, in between we have ordered pan fried fish(cant recollect the proper name). But apart from that we have been served 2 plates of momo though they have not charged a single penny for this.
And before leaving they have handed over 300/ voucher which we can use any of their chains of restaurant.
We all were delighted with this gesture from them and all of us will really remember this.

Overall it was a pleasant experience being there. Already planning to be there again soon :-)

Very good indianised chinese food

The place is located on 100ft road, indiranagar. Below the airport road flyover. Parking is available but difficult to find most of the times. Thankfully they have valet parking.

We went for weekday afternoon buffet. The buffet was priced at 250/-.

There was choice of starters, and then Chinese food. The starters were good. The main course spread container, spicy lamb balls, shrimp gravy along with noodles and rice.

The dessert spread was also good. The service is quick and efficient. The food is not authentic Chinese, and doesn't have elegant flavors (think mugen, shiok) but is very good.

I will definitely visit again

Tried the weekday buffet with its 3-4 starters, dim sum etc and i should say I have eaten nicer momos from the snakart near nilgris.

Good place

The reception was good. The first question was smoking or non smoking seating. We chose smoking. The ambiance is very nice. The place is neat and clean. This is the only restaurant where me and my girlfriend found the chair and the table height to be perfect. The menu has all the regular chinese restaurant dishes but printed in a different way. Specially the price is printed in words and not in numerics. The portions were good enough for one dish to be shared among 2 people. The dessert was the best. The chocolate brownie ice cream sizzler. Just try it. You will love it.

Very good food/service.. but pricey

Had been to this Domlur junction restaurant couple of times and we love the chicken hargao/dimsum which is just amazing with the sauce they give. We had Pot rice, Sapo chicken and a Prawns (I dont remember the name of the dishes) but with rice noodles it was quite good.

overall the service and ambience is noteworthy rather than the food quality.

Very pricey.. in March 2009 we went(4 of us) and it worked out at 2600 bucks for us!?

Not the best chinese!

I am always bored after food at Mainland China and until Mugen opened up this was the closest good chinese restaurant. Amazingly all the dishes taste the same.. they dont surprise me ever with a variation in menu. I have tried 4-5 different starters and nothing seems very different in flavor. I agree with the service aspect being slow.. but hell service anywhere in bangalore is spotty at best. If its your day you will leave feeling satisfied but you can never get out of Mainland China feeling you had the best food there. And that dear readers, is what separates good from great.

Very tasty, if not 100% authentic

It's a few weeks since we went here, but having read the previous review I had to add my own comments, as I'd hate to think the restaurant looked so bad, based on one person's experience.

We've heard from other people that the food isn't necessarily very authentic, and I'm no expert on Chinese food so can't really comment, all I do know is that the Mongolian lamb starter is absolutely superb, and the waiters were very knowledgeable and gave excellent advice on spiciness etc, helping us choose a very enjoyable main course. The drinks service was a bit slow, but we've found that in several restaurants so wouldn't single them out on this - overall a very pleasant meal in very nice surroundings.

My experience with Mainland China-Indiranagar gives me a bad feeling even now.My mom n i decided impromptu to eat out.We thought of checkin out Mainland China.Entered the place n it was filled to capacity. So we asked for a table for 2.Now as our house is right behind the restaurant i left my phone number at the front desk n asked him to call me once the table's ready.he asked for half an hour's time.Fair enough.waited over an hour n yet no call. Was foolish enough to actually go back to the restaurant to ask for my table,n guess wot,he had given my table to someone else thinkin he's me.Absurd.N the front desk guy was feelin so burdened by all the guests that he couldnt even talk to me.very unprofessional and inhospitable at the front desk itself.I've heard the food is good, but they dont wanna let u in i guess!basically a very sad experience.
