Had heard a lot about this place and made time to go and try it out. I was disappointed really. Not that the food was bad; just ordinary, regular stuff. Perhaps my expectations were a bit too big and thus I ended up feeling a little disappointed. I like spicy food and if you do to, it won't be a bad idea to try this place out. Only, avoid having great expectations and you'll be fine.
Drop in food quality
The first two times I visited the place, the food was really nice. Had tried a few starters and they were really nicely done. But when I went back for lunch last Saturday, I was thoroughly disappointed.
The lemon chicken which previously used to be one of the highlights on their menu was just about ok. I had rice and fish curry for the main course and it was a damp squib. The curry didn't really have any punch and it was a struggle to finish it. The rava fried fish was done to a nice crisp but there were no other flavours to it.
My companion went with the chicken thali and he said that there was nothing special to it either.
The service was rather slow even though the place was empty. All in all, it was just an average experience.
Amazing Southern Food
Tried this place, was easy to find through the navigator- a small place ,with an ok ambience... for starters we had egg chilly.....which was like egg pakoda , egg fried with a coating , the coating was not thick unlike the egg pakodas that you normally get ....pepper rasam was yummy, had a very good rasam after a really long time, had a strong flavor of rasam like the name suggested .... i tried the madras fish kozambu basically mackeral curry with appam- the curry was a lil spicy but dint really matter went very well with the appam- bangalore chicken kozambu had strong curry leaves flavor -was tasty - we also had ordered a paneer kozambu which was recommended by the waiter there -it was nice and subtle on spices, except for some strong flavor of cardamom .. its a delight for every foodie - must try for its yummy southern preparations- btw the kitchen is an open kitchen and appears to be clean , mentioned this for the people who worry about the cleanliness...so go ahead and try this place,am sure you would not be disappointed...
Good stuff need no fake reviews!
Apropos the review by 'drunkenmonk' sometime mid july, I (an earlier reviewer of this restaurant), decided to try it again......and the truth be told, I was not disappointed. They now have amazing rolls too!!!! point to note is that even 'drunkenmonk', with all his good meaning cynicism, has given the place 3 stars... LOL!!!!
But honestly, maybe it's just possible that people are happy that there is one 'easy on the pocket' restaurant out there that serves amazing food.....!!!
Just Amazing - price too along with taste
As they say "small package big presence"; this phrase amply suits this restaurant located near Metro tower 92 on CMH Road.
Only reading the reviews here, i thought let me try my taste buds and ended up seeing this small restaurant but Alas it looked small but the taste they give oozes your out with the richness in the flavours.
The service staff are good and there are various dishes. Lemon Chicken was simply superb!!. I didnt like Biryani that well but any side dishes be it chicken, egg, etc are really good and not that expensive too.
Hope many read these reviews and make a visit there, especially those from the coastal side
Cheap and Good
me and 2 of my friends came to checkout this place as it was getting loads of good reviews on burrp!..basically it is a very small place but quiet clean. they serve butter milk as welcome drink ..:). we ordered there very famous lemon chicken which was really mouth watering. For the main course we ordered chilly chicken, rotis and biryani which was nice but nothing great...still We will be back for there Lemon Chicken...:P :)
great value for money
the most impressive part of this place... the pricing ! its very moderate and the quality , quantity and the taste of the food is amazing. Just came back after dinner from here and all set to go tomorrow also ! tried the crab soup, mutton pepper masala, kerala paratta.. all were really good. Food lovers, definitely should try this place...
I landed up here for breakfast and was delighted that they actually served breakfast. I had the dosa with egg curry and I really liked it. The food is greasy and spicy, the waiter gives you an option - Medium spicy/ Spicy, stick to medium spicy :)
Have to try the other items, for non vegetarians it has traditional items like goat bone soup etc. The ambience is as someone stated a hole in the wall only slightly bigger.
We also had the idli and vada and it was as good as the ones served in any Darshini. The price is very reasonable, but stay away from the beverages bad coffee/tea. Will update review after more experences in theis place
Fake reviews getting awarded!!
This Southern Express is strictly a hole in a wall kind of joint and 99% of the reviews published here are fakes. All of them are first time reviewers, who have registered just about the time this place opened up and have stopped reviewing after they put up one glowing tribute to this place.
And now one such review has also got the tag of Featured Review!!! While genuinely written comments on the page are withdrawn in a jiffy, it is very surprising to note that burrp allows these kind of fake reviews to be put up without any qualms!
A Foodie's Paradise!
Are you a foodie?? Specially the kind of foodie that prefers the fresh and rich taste of local cuisines at local hang outs over the five star grandeur?
Then Southern express is the place to be
With its specialty being local south Indian cuisine, the food at southern express is a treat to your pallet. The fragrance of the Biryani takes you straight down memory lane to your grandmas favorite recipe.
The rolls and starters are sumptuous and rich in local flavours.
The soft appams and dosas with the yummm curries are a joy to your taste buds..
I can go on..
However, what got my attention the most was the quantity to cost ratio. It is extremely economical and I would strongly recommend the place to be perfect for people looking to have a quick, good and stomach filling meal without burning a hole in your pocket(college students, Office luncheons).
They also Home deliver, so if you do not have the time to personally check it out, they are just a phone call away.
Very Tasty & Filling Veg Thali
Went to Southern Express @ pillar no 90 on CMH road for lunch on a Sunday
afternoon and had veg thali. Food was delicious with hot wheat rotis and good dry veg sabji. Found even the customary sweet served with a thali meal made with some effort and good inputs. I intend to go again and try some non veg which they claim is their specialty.
Fantastic tasting food, no really, fantastic!
I love Indian food, real Indian.Less heat and more emphasis on the spices. The food here was so tasty. I don't have the words to describe the layers of flavour I could taste in the food. May be it's because I'm a non vegetarian and can really appreciate subtle tones of the starter and main... It's a pleasure to dine somewhere which has an emphasis on quality food. The staff were welcoming, it's an amazing place with great food. The chicken biriyani and Netthilli Fish fry and the rolls.... I was stuffed but still managed to eat it. Just gorgeous.
An awesome place to have a tasty food!!
I have been here for the second time and must say still the service and taste of the food is yummy, looks like they have already set up a high standard for themselves to maintain the same taste making it a unique place in that surrounding
They start with welcome drink buttermilk/rasam- tell you something dont say no to that coz its very nice and more over its absolutely freeeeeeeeeeee Starters like Netthali fish fry, French chicken, mutton pepper fry, egg rolls are so tasty that you cant stop at once.. Apart from that mutton biryani, chicken sholay kabab is equally good:)
All Non Vegetarians should try out this place; its tasty and still its reasonable
Great food for a great price!
A rating of ten on ten in all these categories - Food, Ambience and Service.
This place provides a great bang for the buck and this one has a class of its own. The food served here is a splendid mix of all the cuisines from southern India.
My last visit was as pleasant as all the other ones. Everyone are served with a spiced buttermilk welcome drink, which made us (a group of 6 people) fall in love with this place, but not yet. Here is our (most of it is mine) experience.
Starters are an absolute treat with mutton soup, nethili fish fry (I absolutely love this dish and have treated myself with two orders in the same meal course), french chicken garnished really well and the mutton fry.
The service is truly fine and everything was served on time.
The main course is great, serving a great combo of veg and non veg dishes (I had the opportunity to try out both as i visited with my friends who are pure vegetarians). I ordered the mutton biryani and the colour freaked me out a bit (being green) but once I tasted it, it was good. It may not be for everyone but certainly a must try.
The next time I am there I would like to try is the appam and stew.
And the ambience is simple yet nice and pleasing.
This one is a must-visit.
P.S: For the non-vegetarians don't forget to get the french chicken, mutton fry and nethili fish fry & for the vegetarians get the french paneer and the masala yam roast.
The appams with stew, kothuparotta and idlis are exceptional!
Curries are mild and the quantity is great. Very friendly on the pocket as well!
It's very convenient to order from home when i don't want to cook after a tiring day at work. Also been ordering practically every Sunday for brunch. Great place!
Bang for the buck.....yummy
Why on earth is the place so far from my house??? Tucked away in on of the bylanes near Indiranagar railway station is this Beauty...it is this Best package of yummy food and fantastic prices. The management gave directions saying get to metro pillar number 90 and take a left..welcome change from the X main and Y b cross stuff...every one is welcome with a nicely spiced buttermilk:)... I dont think i saw any dish priced more than 150. The place had minimal interiors but very clean. So small is the place that the wash basin (hand wash) is actually outside the restaurant.Going forward with the food being the way it is...i expect many people to be waiting. We were a bunch of 6 ppl and had a jolly good time. We were at 1130 in the morning and we had both the breakfast and lunch at our disposal . Ordered pongal, poori and sambar wada. The sambar was the typically tamilian and the chutney great too. The pongal and the poori baaji hit the spot and were really good. Then we ordered the mutton paya soup and mutton pepper dry. The broth was really nice with the right amoun of salt and pepper and the fry was made of tender pieces unlike boney pieces u get elsewhere. We liked it so much we ordered3 more of each. After this ordered chicken stew.paneer 65,kottu chicken paratha, bangda fry, mangalorean fish curry and white rice. All except the fish items were a 5/5 for quantity/quality/taste/value for money. The let down was the mangalorean curry. The fish in it was nice but the curry no where authentic. It tasted like a runny north indian chicken curry with fish in it and the bangda fry was a bit too dry. We had a chat with the the manager Venugopal was were told they have specialized cooks from all 4 southern states and his partner is north indian:) entire geography covered...We did mention that we did not find the curry good enough and the chef was summoned and he did agree there was no coconut milk in it and the mangalorean cook was'nt in and he was not very familiar with the dish..he apologized...Overall for a bunch of ravenously hungry ppl a bill of 1500 and amazing tasty food it really was bang for the buck....go here for great spicey food and not feel stung by the Bangalorean food prices
Must try dishes...
What amazing about Southern Express is its special dishes that is recommended in the menu.. Watch out for the chef's hat in the menu @ southern express to know more about the recommended dishes. I bet you will not find these dishes & that too made with so much home made touch to it anywhere in Bangalore.
Also try the JUMBO chicken rolls.. Its really worth every penny and amazing service.. Last but not the least.. The place is clean and Hygienic.... Love the place...!!
Little things that matter
I love all south indian food, and always see if I can get good south indian(Non Veg)food at affordable rates (as the good restaurants in Blore are usually very costly). Well....had seen the new restaurant coming up in Indira Nagar (The Enfield showroon is on the same lane) and decided to give it a try. 'Amazing' is the least I can say.....the food was way above average (a special mention to be made of the delicious mutton dishes I ate - very well cooked)...the 'free' welcome drink they serve (Rasam or buttermilk) is a refreshimg and nice touch....others can learn from them. But what was a pleasant surprise was the bill at the end of the meal.... we were a big group, and the end result was around 200 per person. Where do you get food this good, at these rates any more.....:-)Family loved it too as they serve Mangalorean dishes (Appams, Sannas etc)Should say the style is more like a 'Non Veg Darshini'. This place is now on my list of 'Regulars'...! Recommend it to anyone who is not 'Loaded' and who has a healthy apetite.
PS: Was too full at the end to try the rolls, but the fillings seem pretty cool and unusual.....Mutton liver and kidney, and Palak for the veggies :-)
This is the yummiest food i ever had, we had dinner at Southern Express with our family the starters like French Chicken and Nethilli Fry was very delicious more like homely food. The Mutton Biriyani and Mutton Pepper Fry were too good. Totally had a good experience. Must try place : )
Ms. sumalatha & Family
Great blend South Indian Non Veg food
Must try the Mutton egg rolls, Biriyani, Kothu Chicken Parota, Netthali Fish fry & Paya soup/ curry. The menu is exhaustive and has dishes from various regions from the south.
Meet the Chef " Murugan " & ask for the daily special (Brain fry, Head mutton curry etc) or see the large wall-black board for the daily specials.
The food is very light on the stomach and absolutely delicious!
