Pizza Perfect

Endless Appetite
Devouring Bangalore at an unsure pace.
By Poonam Vaidya and Meghna Hegde

Salsa recommended that Appetite and her go visit Under the Mango Tree. Now, Appetite had looked at the reviews on Burrp! and was a tad unsure whether she wanted to go. It seemed to be an overpriced restaurant with rude staff and bad food. Not something you would look forward to.

Nevertheless, she decided to give this doggie-loving place a chance, though she had no dog of her own. Anyway, the duo visited the place on Monday. Appetite had hurriedly looked at the first page of the menu, and already decided to have a Cranberry Crusher. But when they arrived, she changed her mind and decided to split a French Onion soup with Salsa. It sounded fancy. But when it arrived, it was sour and had only onions in it, so when the waiter asked, “How is the soup?”, Appetite suddenly became obsessively absorbed in the bland depths of the bowl, while Salsa smiled stiffly and mumbled, “Good.” Thoroughly unconvincingly.

Afraid but determined, they scrolled the menu and hit upon the Pizza section. Grilled Chicken Pizza was chosen, a pie with 8 pieces. What arrived was a pretty big pizza with a million things on it. it was seasoned with a perfect bouquet of garlic and the two liked it a lot.
When the two decided to ask for the cheque, it was only Rs. 640, including service tax and everything. Not what you call overpriced.
"A pretty good place," agreed Appetite. The staff were also not rude or anything, as the Burrp! reviews had lead her to expect.

Not very happy with the services but great concept

Have been to UTMT with my Dog "ALICE" and a friend with his their dog "LYKA" The very reason I had been there was because i wanted to enjoy an outing with Alice. Though the place was good but the food was not as good as expected. It was a buffet and ne could order for items that were not there on the buffet menu. Food for us was not as expected but i am highly disappointed by the food served to Alice. She didn't even eat it !
Would suggest the Management to make it special for the "Special guests" as most of the pet owners would like to give their pet a good or better experience. And the thing which is most important for them is the "FOOD". All the best! And hope to see some improvement in this regards.

Needs to improve

We went to this restaurant post reading reviews at Burrp but unfortunately we didnt have a great experience here.. a ver basic drink- fresh lime soda was also not the way it should have been. It was completely sour, although we ordered a sweet n salty one.
We had ordered grilled chicken and chicken legs as the main dishes. The chicken was hard as if it wasnt fresh and chicken legs were not at all edible. The mushroom appetizer that we ordered was short of salt and pepper, completely bland. Overall not a nice experience

Bad Hospitality And Food

Pet friendly maybe but not people friendly.
Awful lasagna, Oreo cheesecake , average minestrone soup, pasta, sautéed mushroom. Salad was good , so was the banyan Rossa wine.
Were moved to a different table halfway through our meal. The owner must have forgotten to block the area for a birthday party. She was present in the restaurant when we were seated. Moved to a table in a dingy mosquito infested corner.
She didn't feel the need to thank us later or inquire if we were comfortable.
Well you can always get the media to write good.

Dear Mohan, firstly, we're terribly sorry about your poor experience this noon.. just to clarify, the lady you saw wasn't the owner but the party organiser and she came up and spoke to you even before the staff realised. The owner had left at 2.45 once most tables were settled and 3.15 is closing and the party was to start at 4. Secondly about the food.. we wish you'd told us about the lasagna right then and we could have checked what was wrong and offered you another dish.. Overall, we apologize for today and request you to come back and give

I am Loving It.

In October 2011, I had written a mixed review on UTMT (under the alias Pippinder), and gave them a 2 year pass. We revisited them a month back, on a rainy night and it's now the Most Favored haunt for the gang.

The best starters are the Veg brochettes and the butter garlic prawns. For main course, the handmade thin crust pizzas are a delight. Can be shared by two. If you are still raging hungry after the starters, give a pass on the thai curry rice combo, and go in for the Pastas or the Pork chops.... I'm a sucker for those pork chops or try the fish.

The drinks continue to be average except for the Aaam Ka Panna (which is not on the menu but served at the North Indian cafe upstairs). Ask for it and if you want a rice dish to finish off the journey, order a Veg / Non Veg dum biriyani as well.

The desserts are sinful.

What we loved best of all was the personal "hi" and "Thank you' we got from a totally drenched owner on a very rainy night where we were the only customers.

You can probably find a dozen other places which can serve you similar food but for us that greeting was the piece-de-resistance!!!!

Great going UTMT.

Nice but expensive

This Place is good .. Just cant believe there is such a quiet restaurant behind the busiest streets of Bangalore.. Fish fillet is great.. Quantity can be improved and prices should be lowered down.. but nevermind for the quality of food they serve.. Would visit again but not often

Valentines Dinner

I had gone for Valentines dinner with my girlfriend and we had a great time. The food was very good and the staff very polite. The also had a giveaway at the end which was a nice guesture.
INR 1500 for a couple for a 5 course meal and nice ambience was totallyt worth it.

Looking forward to visiting them again for lunch.

June 4, 2013response from management at Under the Mango Tree:

Hi Udhav,

Late but still a heartfelt thank you..

Slow Christmas Horror

My gang of 10 booked this place for lunch at 1330 hours, more than 24 hours in advance. I convinced them not to go to BBQ Nation, and instead try this funky-sounding pet-friendly place. Oh woe.

We reached, to find that the dining area was still occupied. We consented to the manager's suggestion of seating us in the cafe space at the entrance, and we settled ourselves in the near-pedestrian area. Well, we were friends and together, so what does it matter. In all fairness, there is little the manager could have done as he could not rush other customers.

We took about 15 minutes to look at the menus and then clearly and unequivocally placed our orders.

And then, we waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

To begin with, a few bottles of wine: red and white in equal numbers. I'm no vintner or sommelier and I did not expect anything great for the buffet price, so the wine does not color my review. However, I must say that the brands chosen were so bad. The red was extremely acidic and sharp, and nearly vinegar. The white was similarly almost vinegar, without the nose-burning sharpness and acidity.

3 bowls then emerged, and we peeked within them to find soup at the bottom. Watery tomato soup, each bowl less than half full.

After more waiting, 3 vegetarian starters came. A chunk of mozzarella, a ball of some fried mishap, a quarter tomato that might have seen hot water, and a "savory apple tart".
More wait, and the non-veg soups came. We found that this was the veg soup with a few nibbles of boiled chicken.

Despair.

2 non-vegetarian avatars of the starters were next, which were similar except that the fried thing was non-vegetarian and the apple tart was missing.

At this point, my stomach was literally burning as I had imbibed half a glass of the vinegar-wine, and I was desperate for food. We had now been waiting for more than 90 minutes. Less than half of us had received the soups, and a similar number the starters.

We tried talking to the waiters multiple times, and were ignored almost as many. We then took to being loud, which saddened me. When culture does not help, barbarity will brute-force the way through.
This held true, as we received 2 more vegetarian starters. I became very suspicious of this, as the plating looked almost exactly like the non-vegetarian starters: apple tart missing, and the chunk of mozzarella was differently cut and placed in a different location. I let out more yells, and got the suspicious "vegetarian" food sent back.

My friend and I then got up, and marched straight to the office. We passed about 8-10 people waiting at the gates; poor souls had also booked, but the restaurant seemed to have accepted all bookings and was now beyond overbooked.
We firmly (and a little rudely, to be fair) stated that we would like to cancel and leave, as we had waited for more than 2 hours. To this, the manager says he will charge us 3k for the wine: advertised as complimentary on the buffet!

He also said "You are leaving, and the rest of your food is ready and has been plated".
I replied saying "Really? We are totally upset, and ready to leave, and our food is conveniently ready? Do we have to yell at you and your staff each time we want our food?"
I then rudely informed the manager that I have never seen such uncaring and avoidance-expert waiters, and such brusque management, not to mention the fact that they do not seem to know their own booking capacity. To which he said "Don't make me start talking about you, man" in a very irritated and rude tone. This is the most rude any service industry person has ever been with me, and I have been all over Bangalore, consuming food and drink of all kinds and varieties. Never have I had my character insulted in so baseless a manner when expecting nothing but politeness.

We paid 3k for the disgusting wine and turned down the manager's attempt at being placatory. "The next time you guys come here, we will give you a complimentary meal", to which I replied "No way man, we are never coming here again after this experience".

And we ran to Cafe Masala. Those guys held their buffet open for us, and ensured that we got hot and delicious quality food and attentive, polite, unobtrusive waiting.

Sorry, UTMT, but this visit scarred me. Not the poor food quality, but the rudeness, avoidance, lack of training, and the excessive delays. Mismanagement extraordinary. Get your waiters a lot of training, get your manager / floor honcho anger and crisis management training, and be polite to all your customers. You have a nice concept, but it will take a lot of convincing for me to ever visit you again.

TL/DR:
Excessive overbooking, extreme slowness, untrained waiters, rude manager.
Me: "Do we have to yell at you and your staff each time we want our food?"
Manager, UTMT: "Don't make me start talking about you, man." In a very irritated and rude tone.

December 30, 2012response from management at Under the Mango Tree:

N B,

I'm glad that you are aware, and I do not need an explanation.

I would like to come back, as what I heard about UTMT was contrary to my experience.
My group and I would like to know if it will be on the house.

Surely not worth a second visit

Friends and me went for the Christmas dinner. It was priced at Rs.699/- plus taxes and we were told that it would be a 5-course (Soup, appetizer, pasta, roast turkey / lamb shanks and dessert) meal and accompanied with a 375 ml bottle of red / white wine.

Once we arrived and our order for wine was taken, it felt as if we were being rushed at every stage. Once u put the spoon down a waiter comes and asks if he can clear the food even though it is evident that we weren't done. Wine was served in glasses instead of the advertised bottles. Food portions were so small that the plates and bowls they were served in almost looked empty.

They completely forgot abt the pasta course and when we asked the waiter how it was then being advertised as a 5-course and he told us that the wine was a course in itself !!!!

Food quality was as bad as the service and all in all a completely forgettable experience.
Surely not worth a second visit.

Straight Lines

More than anything else, I was overwhelmed by the ambiance of UTMT. Very neo-modern ... straight lines all over- the roof, tables, chairs, with a huge amorphous structure of the mango tree trunk in between. Brilliant! (I don't know how much it matters as a diner, but yes... I really liked it)
The choice on menu is limited, I had Chicken Roulade and I liked it good.
Looking forward for a long afternoon at UTMT.

Please keep up the standards you are having now, they are great and I loved the food.
Good value for money. With so many restaurants in Bangalore, just charging a lot without any value for customer or food, yours was a different experience.

Keep up the good work, because most restaurants seem to loose it after some time.

Mundane food is an understatement

My latest visit to Under the Mango Tree was an utter disappointment! The service has significantly deteriorated and so has the food.

We ordered grilled squid as a starter, beef steak, risotto, quattro formagio and margherita pizza. And beer to go along with it.

After a 25 minute wait, our beers arrived flat in their mugs. No sign of the starter. What the waiter left on the table was a sad basket of stale and broken bread (5 finger-sized pieces) with mayonnaise.

After another 15 minute I see him coming with our main courses. When I asked what happened to the squid. He smiles and tells me, "Oh I forgot about that. Would you like to have it?" Slightly stunned I opted out of it.

Now comes the actual ordeal of a meal. The beef was suppose to be done medium rare. What I got was an almost raw and sinewy pieces of meat. The mash, vegetables were bland and the sauce runny and without any flavour.

The risotto was thick and chalky in the mouth. The shock was the quattro formagio. Yes, it is supposed to be done with 4 types of cheeses. But it is not just that! It was choking and nothing to cut through the heaviness of the cheeses. The margherita was the only saving grace.

The blueberry cheesecake was equally disappointing. This was my last visit to the place for sure.

Loved it!

Visited the restaurant for a Sunday lunch as a party of 5. The first thing that strikes you is the great ambience. We ordered a bunch of things, thin crust pizza was yummy, bruschetta was good. Khowsuey was good too, but would've been better with additional condiments and noodles. The grilled fish, stuffed chicken breast and sausage got good reviews too. Cons- service was slow, the chips with the fish arrived 15 mins after the fish. But overall great place, great food and ambience, I will be back!

Great Second time visit

Yesterday was my second visit to UTMT. The food was again delicious. Some of my friends along with me, visited UTMT for the first time and they also loved the food and the place. In Starters, we ordered chicken stuffed with olives and spinach with cheese squares and both were very delicious. In the main course, my friends ordered Prawns with spaghetti, Pan tossed Fish, Green small peas soup and I ordered A veg steak. The veg steak was the best one. Thank you UTMT for your wonderful service and we hope to come again and again.

Great ending for an weekend with authentic food

It was a great experience at UTMT. It feels great to have dinner with delicious food with peace and minimal sound around you. Including me, two of my other friends liked the ambience, food, service and quality of the food.
I had a Veg "Special Burmese Khowsuey" and it was awesome. I had it for the first time and it excellent. The other two friends had "Prawns with butter and garlic" and "The Pan tossed Fish". They loved the dishes. And there are plenty of variety of dishes.
But one thing is that prices are bit to high. but overall it was a great experience.
Thank for UTMT for your wonderful service and will surely have a visit again... All the very best...

Good food

Away from the maddening crowd, tucked away in a corner but still in the heart of the city, this place is just perfect. Wonderful food; we had a steak and salad - and both were excellent.
The drinks ( we had a Mango something) was not really worth the buck and the dessert choices could do with little improvement . I would still rate it as an excellent place and would be back .

Great ambiance, great relief from all the hustle and bustle of the commercial part of Richmond road, Brigade road etc. suggestion is since you have such a magnificent tree tone down the rest of the interiors to get a more earthy feel. Work close by (was listed and promised discounts on next visit) and at times it is a great relief to get away even if for a short while to a place as calming as yours. Food is excellent love the pork chops, portions on some of the others could be better, and good to see that you responding to fellow burrpers what would you recommend for a quick lunch

A semi-rotten Mango perhaps

I had been here with 4 of my friends for a small get together. We decided on this place after reading the reviews and thought it would be different, and hopefully good. Alas! Our expectations were too high perhaps... :(

Though the ambiance is good and we were all happy to see that it is under a mango tree indeed :) our spirits faded quickly. :(
Of all the 5main course dishes and the 3starters that we ordered only two dishes were satisfactory. I don't say good, I say average. The other dishes were well below par.

After an average main course and some average starters we pinned our hopes on the dessert. But our hopes were dashed yet again. This time the desserts (the three that we ordered) were abysmal!! You get much better desserts at so many average places in bangalore.

Overall experience- 2.5/5.. Disappointed :(

Hi,
We did come on Sunday(or was it Saturday I don't remember) but did not try any of the pastas or the khowsuey. Are you suggesting that they are good?

We had ordered Sauteed Mushroom, Tofu, and Spinach Cheese cubes of which only the cheese cubes were ok. Also we ordered 4 dishes from your vegetarian main course and 1 form non-veg.
For desserts, I think, we ordered all three items on your board. Desserts were the most disappointing items. :(

Regards.

May 7, 2012response from management at Under the Mango Tree:

No, wasnt suggesting that, was going through sunday lunch orders to check about yours.thank you for the information, will definitely look into the matter..

Far from the maddening crowd!

I am a regular at Under the Mango Tree and its peaceful ambiance keeps me coming back for more. Every time a friend is in town, this is the first place I take them too.

I generally come here for their coffee, french fries and sandwiches, all of which are unbelievably reasonable. To sit under the canopy of trees, sip great cappuchinos and munch on delicious french fries is a treat indeed. There is no music to distract from conversation, but only gentle rustling of leaves.

The best time to be here is anytime after evening. The risotto I tried here once was absolutely perfect and I wouldn't mind paying for authentic food.

I will definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu!

Good ambience..needs to work on the food.

i was here a couple of months ago with a bunch of office colleagues. i loved the ambiance. Being a Konkani Maratha who comes from a place where mangoes are exported I loved the concept. However the management needs to work a lot on their food. Plating was superb and the ingredients were all fresh, but my fish was over cooked. The chicken ordered by my friend was also not well done.
I am sorry to say but this was a very big downer. I would love to visit this place if some one assures me that their food quality has improved.

GOODBYE BANGALORE.. HI TO UTMT !

Well. it was my last day in Bangalore after staying there for 7long years before relocating to Delhi. I took my friends to UTMT for kind of small farewell treat.

This place turned out to be a total surprise, and I was all zapped with the calmness and serenity of the place.Excellent natural ambience.

Secondly, Being a continental Lover, the food here was like cherry on the top.
The vegetarian Lasagne & Raviolli pasta with ricotta chees and spinach was mind blowing. One of the bestest I have had in Bangalore. The friends loved their non veggies too and really appreciate the choice for the lunch.. the mocktails were not that great.
Desert again was amazinggggggggggg ! !
The service could have been bit faster though.
In total , I give 9.999/10 to this place, and on my visit to Bangalore next, I am coming there for sure.

Expensive BUT WORTH IT IT ! !

Absolutely worth whatever we paid for.

"Under the mango tree" really has an inviting name, doesn't it? I could already tell it's a house turned into a restaurant.
It's kinda hard to tell there's a restaurant hidden on the insides of Richmond town, unless you were walking by and paid attention to it. The insides look pretty nice, I can bet it wasn't an expensive interior job but it still carries the pleasing looks for a continental restaurant (Oh, I think I noticed the mango tree right in the middle, if memory serves me right)
Recently, I've been worrying about checking out new continental restaurants in Bangalore because of their not-value-for-money-and-miniscule food portions (shame on those restaurants, really like what is it with them?) and fortunately, this isn't one of those. We ordered French onion soup, Chicken Olivette, a Pizza and Chicken Roulade. Some of these were on their specials board. They were all perfectly done, perfect portions and delivered on the table with a smile. The servers are not pretentious or stuffy and they don't try to recommend a dish just cause it's expensive or to get rid of it for the night (a lot of restaurants do that). So I'd like to rate it 4 stars for the food.
The hazelnut mousse cake that caught our eye was phenomenal, so rich that I've never had anything like it. I wasn't overly happy about the dessert pricing plus the portions, thankfully the taste helped me forget it.
To the staff: Make sure to serve a bigger piece of a dessert (is it tooo much to ask for?), however amazing the taste is, the portions vs pricing can be disappointing.
Overall, it was a good good experience and I'm going to spread the word.

Under a Mango Tree... literally

If you're looking for a new dining experience, come to this place. I came here with my husband and we had the mushroom leek soup, the apple lettuce walnut salad, the burnt garlic lasagna and my husband had the beef tenderloin steak. I enjoyed every item I ate. My husband said that his steak wasn't beef but was actually buffalo, but I'm a vegetarian so I'm not sure it that is accurate. And although a mango tree leaf fell into our food (twice!), the food was too delicious to care. It's a bit on the pricy side but worth it if you have the money to spend.

Good Ambiance, ok food

Went on a Saturday evening with prior reservation. Since the place was not that crowded, it seemed like reservation was not necessary.

Starter & Soup : The tomato and basil soup was yum. So also the complementary bread & dip given. We had veg American bowl. The onion rings given as part of it had a funny taste...

Main Course : The Arrabiata was ordinary, nothing great to mention. The plating of the chicken dishes had a gourmet touch. Chicken Steak, though looked attractive was very fibrous. Chicken n Cous cous was better then chicken steak. Both the chicken dishes were not grilled for sure, though mentioned in the menu.

There was only ice creams for desserts which we skipped.

The bill for 3 people came to around 1400 INR.

great experience altogether

beautiful presentation of food, lovely ambience and patient polite staff.
been there about 2-3 times so far, and tried most of the vegetarian and chicken dishes on the menu and every time, enjoyed all of it! blueberry cheesecake is a favourite here.
the only one time, the prawn in butter garlic felt somewhat raw, it was immediately taken away and was replaced with a dish cooked exactly as per our liking.
cost around Rs1200, for two people. will definitely recommend.

Thank you Khushboo

Good place for a nice Sunday brunch

We wanted to have a nice Sunday brunch and we are happy that we were able to do it.
Food is tasty, service was good. White wine was not so great. We tried couple of their signature dishes, Chicken Steak and Aubergine with mozzarella cheese were very good. Spinach and cheese cakes were very ordinary. French onion Soup was good. We were right under the tree and the ambience was good. There was music which was audible before it got filled up with people. I was very happy to find a good mix of customers from young to old, families to group of friends enjoying their food.
It wasn't too light on the purse.

Dessert chocolate mousse was very ordinary as it was hard due to refrigeration.

All in all good time and good food.

A nice cozy place with excellent food

This place being parked on the side lanes of a bustling area, takes you away from all the bustle of the city. The calm and refreshing ambience is what sets this place apart. Even though I arrived with arrived in the afternoon on a very hot day it was quite cool under the canopy of the mango tree. Yes, this restaurant is actually under a huge tree. We had an absolutely sinful yet delectable spinach, bacon and cheese crepe to go with our kiwi sparkle drinks. We chose the pan tossed fish and the prawn gambo for the main course. We would have loved to finish with a dessert, but the crepe was way too filling to make room for it. It was an enjoyable experience and I would definitely try coming here at night the next time.

Over rated food and definitely needs to improve

Having seen the previous reviews, we decided to do a mid-week lunch there. Here are our comments -

Ambience: An interesting branding "under the mango tree" totally destroyed by the poor quality of "theme" and "ambience". Added to this we had the constant buzz of a powerdrill during the meal, as they are renovating interiors.

Drinks: The "wine sangria" was oversweet and this killed off the taste of the wine. The apple fizz was without any character. Also the waiter made a blooper and served this to us well after the starter course. He did make the effort of apoligising., which is commendable.

Starters: The butter garlic prawns were delicious and portions were large. The American mix bowl should never even have featured as a menu item. Extremely unimgainative fry up, more worthy as a bar snakc at a pub. Tasteless and oily.

Main Course: Pork chops were well cooked and came clean off the bone. The portion was large. However the sauce was a big let down in flavour as it was too thick (like a grease cake). The veg penne was a bit too dry, although they had got the flavours right. The chicken steak should have been named as a "chikka" steak, so tiny in portion and extremely lacking in taste.

When compared to the likes of a "Cafe Y" 2 streets away or a Woodstock, Under The Mango Tree needs to work a lot on its cuisine, as if you are going to compromise on both the food and the ambience, the only thing going for you is the mango tree!!!!

It is unfortunate that your experience with us wasnt as pleasant as your fellow burpers.
The good part as we see is, you did like you starters taste and portion and main course taste as well except for the CHicken Steak portion, which I hope you did point out to the server and he would have definitely changed it to your taste if you found it dry or flavourless.
Our Sangria usually moves a lot and we will definitely look into what went wrong with the serving this time around.

Dear N B,
Thanks for responding. That's definitely very professional.
However if you go through the reviews, there is a consistent issue on the size of portions, which you need to address as a part of quality control, as if 2 covers get larger than average and 1 a bonsai sized one, it leaves the guys with plenty feeling a bit guilty to be eating.

On the plus side you do have a great brand name, a potential to build an aesthetic ambience, and I can see several of my fellow Richmond Town foodies do hang out with you. IThese are

Worth a visit if you're in the vicinity.

Though we were disappointed by the ambience and the decor, the food more than made up for it.
Have you heard of melt-in-your-mouth pork chops and always wanted to try it?? Then please indulge yourself in the gorgeous pork chops. Very generous helping and trust me its so good you wouldn't want to waste anything.
The starter we ordered, grilled prawns, were well cooked with a very tasty sauce and beautifully presented.
The ratoutouille that was served with the UTMT signature chicken was also delish and I wish I'd asked the chef for the recipe.
Dessert was a rich chocolate mousse that was filling and tasty.
Prices were reasonable and we felt it was worth it.
The only negative - the large flatscreen TV in the dining area. The waiters were distracted by the ongoing cricket match and it was a bit annoying to be placing an order with someone whose attention was elsewhere.

Very nice place

This place is good - I would say one of the better restaurants in the central Bangalore area. Very pleasant atmosphere. Good food, Not too expensive and very tastefully decorated.

I've eaten there on numerous occasions and while never quite blown away by the quality of the food - never been disappointed either. Perhaps with a little bit of effort they could make really excellent food. I had a fish dish there - which I later saw was rated the best fish dish of that type in Bangalore - but I felt that while the fish was good - the spicing was slightly off. I've had Pizza there on several occasions and havent been disappointed though.

The ambiance is great - its very nice to be sitting in a semi-outdoor setting. And the idea of using wine bottles as lights is very nice. The bathroom was a bit of a disappointment earlier, but I think they have fixed it up. Parking is pretty easy as well.

So all in all I would strongly recommend this place.

Okay, I went again tonight and was very happy with the food. I had some sort of malaysian chicken curry which was pretty nice. We had the mezze platter to start of with - which was excellent - though a bit overpriced for the amount they give - its essentially a dollop of excellent hummous with pita - with few other things thrown it - but 300 + tax + tip is a little much for it. The rest of the meal though, was reasonably priced and very good. I was very happy with the dessert - a chocolate mousse cake. The drinks - iced tea - was initially a l

Good, potential to be excellent

Have been here twice within the last month with my fiance. There's nothing about the food quality that I can say which hasn't already been said. Yes, it is as good as most people claim.
The service too is good - I found a strand of hair in my vegetable side dish, and the manager and waiter looked genuinely embarrassed and were quick to apologize and replace it.
My only concern is with the pricing. With the size of portions they serve, they should either consider increasing the portion size or decrease the price a little. (maybe 25% lesser).
If they were to do that, I have no doubt they can quickly transform from good to great!

Love to be Under The Mango Tree

Under The Mango Tree... the first time I went to this place for lunch, it was with colleagues from work - I fell in love with it. And since then, right down till the last weekend I was in Bangalore - I went there as much as possible. When my mom visited the place, I took her there for dinner - she loved it too... the ambiance was brilliant - loved the lights through the passage way that took you to the main dining area... lights in bottles... haven't seen that one before. Then when my dad came down for a day - took him for lunch to UTMT - he loved it too... and then after this there were many visits to the restaurant.

My last visit to UTMT was on July 24th - my last weekend in Bangalore before I moved back home to Mumbai. This time, since my mom was down, I decided to invite my uncle & aunt (who have stayed in Bangalore for about a couple of decades) for dinner. Everytime I meet them, we meet at the Bangalore Club... this time I told them - that I'll pick them up at the Club and then we go to UTMT for dinner... I know they've been wanting to go there too - but they didn't because of the lack of parking place around the area. Initially, I was a bit skeptical about inviting them - I wasn't sure if my aunt would like the place... but I was wrong - she fell in love with the place as soon as we went in... This even with the rains in full force in Bangalore that weekend :) - and we were to be out in the open - that was covered with a 'Mango Tree'...

I don't remember what we ordered from the menu - but whatever we did (the two sea food dishes, the prawn, the chicken and the desert) - everyone loved the food and complimented the cooking - infact we wanted to meet the Chef too - but then decided against it.

Normally, one would say - Three Cheers... here I'd say - 'Keep cheering' - UTMT, you deserve it.

I know that the next time I get to Bangalore - I will definitely try and go there for atleast a cup of coffee - if not a full meal...

vastly over rated!

The plethora of reviews on this place was quite a temptation to saunter under the mango tree. Much has been written about its ambiance. I found it to be quite sparse with a lone mango tree in the middle and no greenery around. Glitzy color lights at the entrance made one wonder whether it was a kid's birthday! The servings are measly and for the portions they serve, they are vastly over priced. Wine is prohibitively expensive too. The saving grace are the deserts and very attentive and non-intrusive service.

Great food, cozy atmosphere

I'm a little late in writing this review. We had gone there about three weeks back. Though the place is centrally located, it's nicely tucked in a corner, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The place is very kid friendly, and the waiters are, too! We went there with our 8 month old daughter, and though we booked a table for two, we were given a sofa so that we could manage our daughter more easily. Really appreciated that!

Coming to the food, we ordered spicy chicken sausages and Garlic cheese bread for starters. It was excellent. For the main course, we ordered pizza and a (strangely I don't remember) non-veg dish. That was great too. For dessert, we ordered mango cheese cake, and it was superb. Overall, great food, service, and ambiance.

The only two negatives about this place - 1) No beer, but only wine. 2) This is more expensive that the "Moderate" that is mentioned. Though the prices are standard, portions are much smaller than the standard. A round of starters and main course ended up insufficient for both of us.

Disappointed - Found a staple in a dish

My wife and I visited this place on a Friday night. We'd heard so much about the food here and decided to finally try it. To start off, we were served small portions of French bread with olive oil and Balsam Vinegar. The oil and vinegar were in one of those lovely bottles which has two sections within the bottle to hold both Olive oil and Vinegar. I love the tangy flavour of Balsam vinegar and doused my bit of bread with the same and promptly bit into it. I was especially stunned for a second to find that it didn't taste like Balsam vinegar at all. Rather like really salty Soya Sauce. To my surprise, when I questioned the head waiter, he replies, " Sir, we are an Italian restaurant. We don't serve Balsam vinegar. We use Soy sauce!!" Soy sauce!! Anyways, we let it slide and carried on with our meal, only to find a "STAPLE" in my wifes dish! Luckily she did not swallow it. But we called it quits then and left. In their defence, we weren't charged for that dish. But we wont be visiting again.

Starters : Avg price - Veg 120 -150 ; Non veg Rs. 160 - 200; Portion size small
Main course : Avg price - Veg 220 - 250; Non veg - Rs. 260 - 300; Portion size regular
Taste : Avg. Nothing particularly memorable.
Ambience : Very Pleasant
Service : Courteous

Dearest gourmet2011,

The ambience is great. Expected more from the food

Nestled in a quaint part of Bangalore where streets are named after flowers and sound like they are straight out of a Victorian novel, this restaurant is surely has a lot going for it. The location is great and the setting is beautiful. Even on a Saturday afternoon there was enough seating and you could actually hear what you were conversing about. The mango tree in the courtyard does add a unique flavor to the restaurant and the service staff is very courteous and provided just the right amount of attention.

So here's the food review for the vegetarians. We ordered falafel with garlic sauce. The sauce was finger licking good and the falafels were good but slightly flattish and crispier than the round and crumblier ones we were used to. For the main course, we had ravioli in pesto sauce which was good, but the biggest disappointment was the veg steak with mushroom sauce. The sauce and the mashed potato sides were good but the veg. steak itself was a masala patty. I would have expected a more soya based patty that would have been more ideal for the sauce.

Overall it is a nice place but we feel it's not value for money for the vegetarian fare. Also be warned that the lane is quite narrow and parking can be tricky. If I was reviewing only the food I would give it a 3 star, but the ambience and the service does make it earn an extra star.

Great food!

Went with 2 friends for lunch here. We read up about it here and decided to give it a go. The ambiance was really good. We were greeted smilingly and taken to our tables. The food quantity was pretty good for the amount we paid for it. The only minus bits were the drinks were expensive and the place was toasty warm. We would have loved there to be something cooling.

Lovely Experience with Great Food

UTMT, as is known in my friend’s circle, was a place I was longing to try from some time and the wish came true on my birthday. The place was nicely tucked in a not much noisy residential neighborhood of Richmond Town. I found the ambience very pleasant and friendly. I loved the limited sitting (not more than 30) as it brings to you the exclusivity feel and attention. We were a group of 8 and was served by 2 waiters unlike some restaurants where one waiter takes all the burden affecting the service.
Now there are many a place where the ambience is all wonderful and when it comes to food you wish you weren’t there. This is definitely not one of them. We ordered the Crispy Beef in Honey Chilli sauce and a Chicken platter for starters. The Beef was perfectly made, it wasn’t over cooked and neither chewy, and brought in the right balance of flavor. The servings were good too and by the time we finished the starters we were all set for the main course.
For Main course we ordered Minced Chicken Raviloli, Hummus with mince Beef served with Pita bread, Thai red curry chicken with Herbed Rice, and a few more dishes which I cldn’t taste because these kept me busy and surprisingly my friends were a bit possessive about their dishes. The serving was good and the taste was very good. I felt the Thai Red curry to be more on the milder side though. The Hummus with minced beef was excellent. There was little space after this lovely dinner and hence ended it with three deserts which we shared.
The total cost for 8 people came about to 500 per person. So for the final scorecard UTMT is definitely recommended for a place with good ambience, service, tasty food and value for money.

Good but nothing extraordinary...

A nice restaurant with good ambience, but very little capacity(hardly 30) people....food is really good but not at all value for money....2 of us went there , had 2 drinks, a salad, 2 dishes for the main course and a dessert(1000/-) the above mentioned 500(avg for 2 is only if you order 2 dishes in form the main course…nothing else)...though overall the food tasted great...the portions were really meagre compared to the high prices.... a slice of bluberry cheescake was for 140/-....a slice?.....at it wasn't that great either ,you get better cheesecake elsewhere.......if u'r really hungry, you wouldn't wanna go to this place,(coz of the small portions), unless u'r willing to spend a lot, and order a lot of dishes....overall a good experience , but nothing extraordinary….

p.s – our table didn’t have any of the seasonings kept- neither salt and pepper neither olive oil or oregano flakes…

Diappointing

Visited the place after reading all the rave reviews here. I really dont know what the fuss is about. Ambience is pleasant, service is fine but the food is so so average. Portions are meagre, taste is mediocre &the prices are not cheap for the kind of food on offer. Really nice place for a late afternoon lazy lunch. I had some awesome Pasta which was perfectly blended with herbs, veggies and spices. Its little tricky to find but an amazing and caring staff awaits you for a meaningful afternoon lunch. I had the best French Onion Soup in Bangalore so far.......I have been not a great fan of Mushrooms however their sorted button mushroom slices with Olive Oil and Herbs and the dressing was amazing to bring on my hunger to the maincourse. My friend who is a non veg ordered some Fish item and was served beautifully and tastefully.
The ambiance is beautiful and very neat. It is under the Mango tree!

So UTMT deserves one more visit from me atleast. Good Job Guys!

The owner ofcourse is really sweet and she took the trouble to recommend and explain the dishes to us.
I had the bacon wrapped chicken.. yum yum.. it was so delicious. Got some pasta.. which was perfectly made and lastly a blue berry cheese cake which i cannot praise enough.
Ok i got to say this... i'm back in bombay now but my friends and me are stil raving abt this place and whenever we have a blue berry cheese cake we wish we could magically transport to bangalore for another meal :)

Picture perfect ambiance

The best thing about UTMT is the benign presence of, 'the mango tree'. Pat on the back to the owners for choosing a place with so much character. I generally avoid steep places if I have to pay from my pocket money ;) but since mom was paying this time, was only too happy to oblige.
Between the 3 of us we ordered one chicken lasagna, one grilled chicken with cous cous and the 4 cheese pizza. I infact insisted on the 4 cheese pizza as the name was pretty unique and thought it would be interesting to try it out. Well, the pizza turned out just fine, though the distinct taste of 4 kinds of cheese was missing. Lasagna and the chicken dish was rather nice. We signed off with the sizzling browine...nice again!!!
So, the verdict - Food is good, not outstanding, but quite nice. Service is regular, not pompous and the staff is attendant. The ambiance is 'superlative', a perfect date spot. Maybe they could light up the mango tree or something at night, it'll look slendid. I am definitely going back there with my girl :)

Beautiful experience.

UTMT is tucked in a cute little place in a very quite residential area. No flimsy-ness to the place. Its just raw adorable place.
Menu is very delicate with Italian Offerings. The food is sensational. I tried the 4 Cheese Pizza( very different from other places and outstanding). The mushroom risotto is also pretty well made. the Gnocchi was bit of a dissapointment though.
The blueberry cheese cake for dessert is quite the same like everywhere else, but the thick crust makes the brilliance.

miserable experience

Visited on 23/1/11 for lunch. Chose UTMT after hearing a lot about the place. Service was terrible (well mannered but incompetent waiters). Washroom is a mess - visit will kill appetite. Worst experience was the food - me and daughter ended up with stomach cramps due to raviolli chicken - diagonised as food poisoning (of the four guests only me and daughter had this dish - daughter had 90% and me 10%). Daughter had to be hospitalized and missed important golf tournament. I suffered to a lesser extent but ditto symptoms. Chicken must be the culprit because close friend's son had a chicken dish on 22/1/11 evening at UTMT and ended up with identical symptoms - still suffering. Wish it had all turned out better - occassion was one of the guest's birthday. Of the Veg dishes Veg lasagna was good. Verdu salad was a disappointment. But, on the whole, the food poisoning episode literally left a "bad taste in the mouth".

One too many disappointments

Well……Where do I start from? Me and my husband decided to eat out today, as it was a special day for us…(our first year anniversary). And I was given the responsibility of choosing the place. Very recently I had read an article in TOI about UTMT. And the place looked nice. So I decided, why not?? Lets go to a new place. I also looked up on Burpp. There are some good and some not so good reviews about the place. But that’s normal…everyone has a point of view.
But unfortunately we had one too many disappointments. To begin with, we were looking to have a lazy Sunday brunch and I called to make a reservation,(as Burpp specifies the timing as 11.30 and also that the place serves Brunch,Lunch and Dinner)and asked for a table at 11.30, but infact the place opens at 12 noon. Not the best start…but ok.
We reached at 12, and as expected we were the first one’s to arrive. If you open at 12 then you should be ready for service on the shop floor. But they were still wiping cutleries and crockeries and doing table placements… My point being, If I go to a restaurant on a special occasion or any occasion for that matter , I don’t want to hear the sound of the waiters talking loudly or the cling clangs of the cutlery and crockery… you can do it in the back area guys!!!!
So we ordered our starters…I ordered Chicken wrapped in Bacon and he went for the Hummus with Beef mince on Pita bread. Honestly we have had way better hummus… The chicken was not too bad, but nothing extraordinary.
For drinks it was Iced Tea and a pint of Sula Sauvignon Blanc( Rs.600 plus taxes) a tad too much for SULA. But I must say the Iced tea was very nice and refreshing.
Coming to the main course, we ordered the 4 cheese pizza and the Thai Chicken red curry. What can I say…I could not have more than a spoon of that red curry. I know Thai red curry is supposed to be spicy but….this had nothing other than the spice. I mean it was only chicken floating in a red coloured spicy gravy….where are the basil leaves, the thai aubergine, the galangal and all the other veggies which add up to the Thai curry????and the Four Cheese Pizza (barely any cheese, let alone four cheese)… Now I personally like thin crust pizza, but this was a little too thin and burnt on the sides. After all this we didn’t have the courage to order for any dessert….
So, I don’t think I would recoment the place to anyone except for the service(which is very good and timely)the place itself and for the Iced Tea….

I wish you guys all the luck....

Relaxing atmosphere, food ok

My friend and I dropped in for lunch and to talk some business. The place is neat, energetic and pleasing to the eye. I'm sure it looks nicer in the evenings though. Order taken, we just ordered maincourse, the fish and a chicken steak. I had the fish and it looked a little dry as it was pan seared I suppose. I wished there was some sauce to go with it, even a hollandaise or something warm and complementary to the fish. The fish seriously lacked seasoning and many shakes of the cruets later, my fish came to life. It was beautifully cooked, soft and moist on the inside. The sides were a little dry too and could've used a little more butter and seasoning.

My friend was quite pleased with the the chicken dish he had ordered, but I dug into the mashed potato to see how good it was and I was quite disappointed. It was lumpy and could've been a lot more creamier than it was. We finally finished with the Blueberry cheesecake which lived up to it's reputation and then some "cappucino" which just turned out to be regular coffee. With all of that, an iced tea and a fresh juice, the bill was just over a grand.

I'd probably go back there for dinner sometime and try their signature dishes.

Wonderful Experience

The quaint and hidden location of UTMT makes it a very intriguing experience.
I knew we had chosen the right places for a little girlie afternoon because the menu looked splendid and the ambiance was wonderful.
We ordered the crispy tofu as an appetizer. The flavours were amazing - just the right amount of spice and the tofu was not hidden slyly under many veggies. The tofu was crispy and yet firm enough to melt in your mouth, which only proves it's freshness.
The Margarita pizza didn't look a decorative piece of only cheese and tomato sauce. It was thin and yummy with a great helping of cheese !
The chicken lasagna was well cooked and the sheets of pasta were soft and yes, it did melt in your mouth.
Stuffed chicken with couscous could have had a bit more flavor but the mushroom sauce that accompanied it - was creamy and beautiful in the mouth. The mashed potato that came along was slightly grainy and not smooth as how it's meant to be.
Blueberry Cheesecake did not have a firm base but a base that crumbled - however we're not complaining because that has got to be one of the best I've had so far ! The mango mousse cake - was as yummy as a ripe mango plucked off a tree !
The service was wonderful and the staff is extremely attentive. Kudos to the team and here's hoping standards never fall !

Sorry for the delay...

Had been to this place on Xmas Night (first time), as am new to this city found the location slightly shady...BUT to my surprise the entire experience at Under the Mango Tree was super like!!!
It is a nice cosy place for a romantic candle lite dine...The food!!! yummy!!! we had this damn neat starter which was bacon rolled in with chicken and fried, the taste still remains as i write down. pork vindaloo, will get tears into your eyes but you would not be able to waste it...as it is worth. being from Goa i really thought maybe it would just turn out ok, but NO..it was awesome...thanks to the waiter assisting us,totally his recommendation!

They do not serve hard alcohol, since Xmas eve they had this sweet cocktail prepared with red wine, pineapple pieces (forgot the name :( ...), sweet way to welcome Xmas it was this entire jar...where the two of us just couldn't gulp down..the chicken lasagna was excellent....then some complimentary bread sort of with dips...all in all a wonderful and a beautiful time. A must go again, to try out the other stuff on the menu!

the sixth star would have been deserved

me, my wife and my sis had a wonderful easy lunch today - quite literally "under a huge mango tree". takes some effort finding this place - a few signboards would really help those less familiar with richmond town.

this was actually our second visit here - the first was with some friends for dinner within just a week or so of the opening. we thought this place had incredible potential on our first visit itself - great to see its just gotten better.

there's so much variety on the menu. just as we would zero in on something to eat we would spot something more interesting on the menu. there's a bit of lebanese, a lot of italian and some very nice malay and goan dishes. moderately priced for the ambiance and the quality of food - i don't think i saw anything over 300. the soups are around 100, the salads and starters between 100 to 200.

the veg steak - awesome. we were looking for something spicier so the mushroom sauce was happily replaced a spicier tomato sauce. grilled veggies were added - WITHOUT - removing any of the items this dish is originally served with. very impressed.
the penne arabiatta - excellent. again no fuss or extra charge our request for additional olives and peppers.
the fruitti di mari pasta was knock your socks off good - loaded with sea food shrimpy goodness. loved it.
the tomato basil soup and the seafood bisque were excellent. the garlic bread with pesto was the only item we didn't like. the pesto tasted a little flat.

i'm usually very wary of places where the owner is deeply involved in taking orders. they try to influence you to pick the most expensive items and never like customizations. nothing of that sort here. the nice lady who runs this place was so helpful and patient with our constantly changing orders. never tried to push us to picking the dish she liked - much more interested in helping us pick a dish we would enjoy the most. i have had too many good meals ruined by overbearing waiters/managers/owners so today's experience was much appreciated.

will be back soon. loved this place a little too much to stay away for too long.

Terrific proprietor, quaint name, great ambience

Unfortunately those are the best things about UTMT. The ambience is really cozy and quiet considering it is just off the bustle of Richmond Road. Nirmala was charming, super attentive and recommended dishes that were not on the menu.

Getting right to the food...the cream of mushroom and leek soup was clearly missing basic condiments but redeemed itself after some tweaking. The highly recommended prawns with garlic and red chilli and olive wrapped chicken was nothing to write home about and quite overpriced given the quantity. The bacon wrapped chicken was very, very good - full marks here!

Main course was a disappointment. We were a large group, so from the spread we had I can only recommend the chicken lasagne (delicately spiced and not overly cheesy) and the pasta carbonara. Avoid the king sized sausages!! There was something seriously wrong with the sauce.

We ended the meal with the chocolate mousse cake (the cream on top was just turning bad) and the sizzling brownie (very ordinary).

I so wanted UTMT to be one of those 'finds'- close to home, terrific ambience and great food. Generally 2 out of 3 is not bad, but as is with most people, food cannot be compromised with. We left quite disappointed. Won't be going back here :(

A great discovery

I am not familiar with the Richmond town area, but the since the day I heard about this place, the name kept popping in my head again and again. True to the name, the place is very snugly set under a mango tree. The ambience is relaxing, the service is good. The food was excellent, each dish we ordered delighted us. And for desert, we had a blue berry cheese cake, which is the best I have had so far in Bangalore. Overall, a great experience, and worth the money spent.

Better bluberry cheesecakes elsewher?!! No way!!

I was longing to visit this restaurant for quite sometime now, finally gotto go there a week back. After hurdling through saturday's thick traffic and multiple one-way roads, finally reached the place expecting a long waiting que! But wow, there were hardly a few ppl! Inspite of it being just past actual lunch time, they gave us a hearty welcome. There were a lot of options for us veggies! We ordered sum soups and a Tofu item for starters. Tofu was amazingly cook such that it just melted inside! Soups and the garlic bread were jus normal. We ordered a pizza having mushroom(I dont remember the exact item names of the menu).. Pizza had a thin crust and mushrooms were aptly baked. Veg Lasagne was good too. But little did we know that the best was yet to arrive. My husband and I shared a Blueberry cake and my frd ordered a Mango mousse cake. It looked very appealing and couldnt wait to taste it! It was just YUM!! The right amount of everything! It was a delightful way to close our late lunch. Service was fine and the place was noisy-free. Overall, a yummy experience and a 'must-visit' visit place! And pockets are happy too!

Nice for a lazy afternoon

Went there for lunch yesterday (26th) after reading a lot of good things here. My own reaction is a bit comme ci comme ca- good summery easy vibe for a casual meal and not too expensive, but definitely needs to improve F & B and presentation. The starters were okay, but raw onion rings on salmon? Definite no-no! My husband and friend then had the Portuguese pork chops, which they said was all rib and no chop. My ravioli was good, but overpowered by the tomato sauce. Yes, we Indians do like our gravies, but this is pasta with sauce and not vice versa.
And oh yes, a glass of Sula(?) wine for Rs 275+ taxes is way too much for the more cafe-like ambitions of the place.
I can never figure out why wines are priced so high here, especially when licences are much cheaper than other kinds.
So yes, I'd go back and recommend it too, but maybe with not such high expectations.

Raw onion rings on salmon aren't exactly new, for eg: http://www.featurepics.com/online/Smoked-Salmon-Platter-Picture420808.aspx and http://kingscourtcatering.com/store/corporate-menu/breakfast/smoked-salmon-platter/
but apologies if the spare ribs turned out too lean.. next time to inform the attendant, we'l have the matter attended to.
Pasta - will look into it.

A good experience but nothing extraordinary

I was tempted to go to this place after reading all the reviews on this site praising UTMT to the moon. We got a reservation very easily for Christmas evening. I was a little surprised that until I asked I was not told that they have a Christmas special menu.

The place is tucked in a small lane off Richmond Rd and you expect a cozy open air courtyard but the setup, though not bad, is rather disappointing. The seating area itself is very small because of which the tables are a little too close for it to be called cozy. The place is enclosed from all side, probably with a valid reason but you feel you are sitting in a shed, The roof is low which really takes away the open air feel.

The menu is simple...no fancy sounding names. They only serve wine which is fine. There is no wine menu to speak of. You need to ask if they have options. We ordered a wine sangria pitcher which was disappointing. It was wine flavoured juice with some chopped apples. Too highly priced for avery avg drink. I would give that a miss.
For starters we ordered a mezze platter which was ok - have had better in Bangalore. With that that we ordered Bruschetta - again ok. The kids ordered a Margerita Pizza which was on a nice thin fresh crust but with no flavour not even of the cheese. The Arabiatta Pasta was too spicy for a pasta.

In other main course, we ordered some spinach and cheese pancakes, risotto and sausage. The pancakes were good, the risotto was too clumpy and gooey that what it should be.
I can talk more on the sausage dish coz I ordered it. It reads nice - King sausage served with caramelized onion and fries/mashed potatoes.
The dish however didnt live to the expectations of the description. The sausage was sliced and sauteed which took away the fun of being served with a large sausage and cutting it into bites. The sausage was too salty for my taste and too oily. It went well with the onions and side of mashed potatoes and veggies. This simple dish has a lot of potential to be spruced up by adding a dash of pepper/steak sauce or some kind of gravy that just gives it that dash of wetness and accompanied by bread.

Pricing is reasonable but with the overall let down you feel it is overpriced. Service is courteous and fast which is probably a good thing to get these days. I would probably go again only if I am in the vicinity.

The place... well.. we've tried best to make good of the little space we have.. Cant go higher as the branches of the tree are spread in all directions and cant leave it open cos of frequent rains in blr.. so there's little we can do abt the space...
Food- sorry if we've disappointed you, though the margerita and sausages are one of the fastest moving items..

This place is steak sauce! (read: Awesome!)

It was our anniversary and that was reason enough for me to finally come to UTMT. As expected, we were not disappointed.

Soups and starters: Concise set of choices. Which is what I like compared to a huge list of unpronouncables! We went for the French Onion soup and the Goan sausages. The sausages were supremely awesome. The spices were jus about right and created a little bead of sweat on my forehead! :)

Mains: Liberal choices for both veggies and the others. The Ravioli with parmesan was delectable and the Spaghetti melted in the mouth.

Desserts: Biggest regret. We were full after the mains but soooo badly wanted to order desserts. Finally we decided against it. But I know for sure that we will go there jus for the desserts soon.

All in all, a satisfying experience. From the tasteful iced tea to the red sauce on the pasta. Definitely recommended!

longer than Cornucopia, which in itself was an amazing place. Loved the decor. we landed in late on a Saturday night for just dessert. Impressed with the ambience and the staff. we were left alone to take our time to enjoy the place, even after our table was cleared.
comment on the cheesecake. felt a little dry so you may want to order lower quantities from whoever supplies you and make sure it is fresh there. a couple of days in the refrigerator is all it takes for the taste to change. a little more blueberry preserve on the cheesecake could have helped too :-)
The 'brownie sizzler' was awesome and so was the chocolate mousse. will definetely try this out for its main course sometime

Overpowering Ambiance!!good food and great company

Trying new cuisines and new places always exciting at the same time a risk, since I'm a total foodie, if it turns out to be different in some aspect I like to make it known, enter "under the mango tree". Loved it the moment i heard the name, sometimes you can just tell when you love something from the moment you hear it. It sounds so inviting. This cozy little place took my heart away in more ways than one. the name, the ambiance and its friendly owner, nirmala. A special mention, she took very good care of us. I took my parents there and being conventional in their taste, my father being from spain has a thing for bland food, and my mom endorsing an indian palate were both pleasantly surprised with the spread. The sea bass fillet and the Thai green curry with rice was what they ordered respectively. Me and my fiance on the other hand had the arrabiata and the carbonara, relished it too!
And to finish it with my favorite, the mango cake, a gastronomic treat! A few concerns I had tho were that the quantities of the food were minuscule and would really request UTMT to work on this. The salt content also was a little excess in the food. But full marks to the ambiance!!!I would highly recommend this to one and all! try this cute little place out to know more!

This place is certainly unique. I absolutely loved the setting and the gigantic mango tree right in the middle. The staff is well mannered and courteous. The food is very good especially the pizzas but the pizza menu is very limited. i hope they add a lil more variety to the menu. Then there was the owner checking up on all the customers which was very sweet of her. If you are visiting the place for the first time i think you will have difficulty finding it but all in all a very good place for fine dining.

3.5 actually !!!!

If there were awards for names on burrp, this would definitely garner more than just a few votes. You'd be just as surprised as I was if you go there expecting a rustic setting for it is exactly the opposite, but does the job nonetheless....

Yays:
Ambience : Top notch, one of those places you, doesn't get commercialized so that one can enjoy hihopes meal in peace...
Food : Superlative...Must trys are the king size sausages with caramelized onions, the corn flaked fish (particularly liked the tartar sauce that came with it, if that's what it was) and the mango mousse (out of this world- moist and heavenly).
Attentive Hostess

Nays:
All items available are not mentioned on the menu. Placing an order can get difficult at times.
Portions are not in accordance with the word (read 'huge') written on the menu....Again ordering gets a little difficult since one is not sure about the number of dishes that would suffice.
VAT charged at 13.5% extra. I'd rather they incorporated it in the price.....

Definitely going back but would be happier if i had 'more on my plate' :D

Oh and P.S. the mango mousse is not to be missed !!!!!! No words to express it in..... the extra half star is precisely for that .....

An incredible find!

I heard about this place recently and decided to check it out on my birthday.. and whatay place it turned out to be! U get an instant feeling of warmth and cosiness as soon as you enter the restaurant. the menu has a variety of popular foods like goan sausages, vindaloo, thai green/red curry with rice and pastas which just gives you a wide range to choose from.. the only thing missing here is some good ol vino.. which they are planning to introduce soon :)
in desserts we had the blueberry cheesecake which was one of the best in the city.. overall I absolutely loved this place.. and this is on top of my list of "awesome-places-to-eat".. highly recommended for a cosy lunch or dinner..

Ah...its lost..the food... the ambiance ...most of the stuff for which I liked the place ...gone.
During my last two visits, the service was remarkably lousy, it took more than an hour to serve our food. Also, 3 of us were served first then wait for 10 min comes another dish and then......another one....
With just 3 tables occupied I cannot understand this.
Coming to food....the portions have been shrinking with each passing visit (except the dessert). The sea bass that I ordered was pounded into a mish-mash...the flavours ...lost.
Pizza was nowhere even near to dominos...forget specialty restaurants...
The last 2 visits were real let down...probably will visit one more time...the place is quite close to office...so cant help it

I won't go under the Mango Tree

I loved the pictures of seating under the tree and had a very different image of this place - I expected it to be a bit more airy, cozy, lounge-y and relaxing instead of some 8-10 tables cluttered in 100sft of space. The ambiance didn't work my friends and me. We thought this place needs work in terms of interiors.

Also, we were quite disappointed from the hygiene perspective. Our soups were brought with the staff's fingers dipped in (yuck), the tabasco/ketchup bottles with missing caps were exposed to the air, and the balsalmic vinegar and and olive oil were left to "breathe" without stoppers. The place was just not clean. We heard the staff yell back and forth, and saw some guy dissing the staff in the restaurant's dining area. The restrooms were disgusting and I am not even going to get into explaining that.

And yes, food - food was average-below average. I found some other similar restaurants in the vicinity to be better. We had a difficult time eating or conversing amidst staff carrying their supplies to the kitchen and yelling/talking.

It wasn't a great experience or even an average one. Wish we hadn't gone.

Nice Food and Setting

I really loved some of the stuff Cornucopia used to make unfortunately they closed. The place was renovated and now there is a small cafe and UTMT.
I visited UTMT twice within this week and loved the food and ambiance. The place has a very simple and relaxed feel. Though the menu has a limited set of options but the food is made well.
I would recommend tasting the soups, French Onion and Mushroom-leak were good. I liked the sea bass and couscous stuffed chicken for the main course. Chicken Lasagna could have been better, but then it is a tough dish to crack. I think that using some 'fresh' basil sprigs instead of the dried ones could have added more flavor. French fries were good but the potato wedges had too much oil. But generally the non-deep fried stuff had the right amount of cheese and olive oil, which is seldom the case with most restaurants serving such food. I hate unnecessary dollops of cheese on my food, kills the flavor and of course the fat.
The service levels worked for me, couple of people with me had to leave suddenly so the servers promptly parceled the food on request.
Overall a very good experience. The place is close to my office and hence I plan to visit it often. Hopefully they can live upto the expectations.

Live up to your lovely name!!

I'd been meaning to try out this restaurant especially on account of its interesting name. Expected a sort of Secret Gardenesque environment, for those who have been to the super-charming place off Cunningham Road. Found instead, a nice, but not-as-charming place built around a Mango tree.

By default, I've ended up eat at UTMT twice in the past week.

The first time I visited was rather disappointing. The waiter rather nonchalantly informed us that the oven wasn't working so they weren't serving the pizza. Ordered a Pasta Arabiata and my friend had the penne in mushroom sauce. Both were fairly good but not spectacular. Suggestion- Please serve some bread with your pasta dishes- it wont cost you much and the guest will enjoy their dish a lot more!

They are sadly lacking in the dessert area though.

Had lunch at UTMT again today. Their oven had got its act together and the Pizza was very good. A little heavy on the cheese but good nonetheless. The pear and walnut salad was very good as were the Goan Sausages.

Was just about changing my mind about the place when we asked for the cheque to be split between 2 credit cards. (Incidentally the cheque was delivered to our table without us asking for it!) The waiter probably did not understand and swiped the whole amount on one card. Most unapologetically went back and started chatting up with a fellow server giggling about the error.

All in all, the food is pretty good but they need to get their act together on service if they want to carve a niche for themselves. Else it would sadly end up as yet-another-pasta -and -pizza place with a deceptively charming name.

Great Food in a Superb Setting

UTMT really lives up to any images you may have of it when you hear the name. It's casual without being loud and noisy, and the cafe-esque setting could really transport you to some fancy city in Europe.

We started with their mushroom soup, which was creamy and brilliant. We decided to skip starters and went straight for the main course. We had the pan-fried sea bass with olives and sun-dried tomatoes, pork sausages and roasted mushrooms. All three dishes tasted very good but the sausages and sea bass really deserve a special mention.

We decided to have the brownie and ice-cream for dessert, and this was probably the only let-down of the afternoon. But apparently their mango mousse is to die for.

On the whole, a wonderful dining experience with great food, good service and friendly staff and owner!

UTMT has totally caught my attention. It's a haven for
continental food lovers and the magnificent mango tree just
makes the whole experience very memorable. The menu offers a
tantalizing variety. In a short stay of 5 days, I went back
thrice as I couldn't get enough of the food! Also, a special
mention to their King size sausages with caramelized Onion
and creamy mashed potaotes... well the name itself sounds so
mouthwatering and trust me it tasted even better. The
service was great and the soft jazz music just added to the
ambiance. I just wish they have more variety in desserts, as
I sure am looking forward to explore more of their culinary
delights!
