Been here twice. Both because of my vegetarian friends insisting on going here. I hate you guys. Seriously an extremely over-hyped restaurant. The first time we went for buffet. The starters were good. Neither awesome nor bad. But the main course was extremely dull and pointless and poorly put together. The desserts were ok. Nothing to say much. Period.
The next time we went a la carte. The prices were extremely steep especially the non veg dishes. I have to say despite the price range the veg dishes tasted extremely good. But the non-veg dishes. Oh holy crap!! The steep price, the meager quantity and the tasteless dishes. God I felt like I was being robbed in daylight. For 500 bucks they bring you four medium sized prawns which had too much butter and was half baked. That was the one day in my life I wished I was a vegetarian.
Take my word, if you are a full time non veg foodie like me, avoid Sigree at all costs. Even by bad luck if you end up there opt for the buffet, at least your stomach will feel like it had some food. I went home with an empty stomach and wallet.
Very Poor Service
Speciality Restaurants ever since they went public had moved their focus from hospitality and ambience to just turnover and revenue. I'm surprised to they way they operated 3 years back when I had a very pleasant experience from food, hospitality to ambience is all gone now. I find Mainland China too is very bad when I was served dry momos as starters and nothing else was served until I had to ask them for soup and other starters, the food was not re-filled promptly and had to wait for long, I asked for a small cake to celebrate my wife's birthday but was served only ice cream with a candle. Very poor, heavily crowded and highly disappointed.
Good Food, Bad Service, No Manners
Recently the service has become very bad in Sigree. We around 7 people went there by 12.30 pm for a buffet lunch, the service was very bad, we were calling the people repeatedly for each item and no one responded. And when we asked for one veg item for the second time they said it will not be served as the service time is over. (Remember we went by 12.30 and asked around 1 pm). What is the purpose of Buffet lunch when they are not ready to serve the same item for the second time. We were not offered with a finger bowl even after asking, instead the server started cleaning the table with his cleaning cloth even before the bill was given and it was not too late (just at 2.00 pm). They treated us as if they were giving us food for free.
Not Worth The Price You Pay!
You cannot rate a place unless you have been there yourself. I was told that Sigree is one good place to dine at but as soon as I had a seat, I just wanted to get out of the restaurant. Beginning with the starters, they all tasted the same. The chicken was dry and tasteless. The cutlery wasn't comfortable to hold. The number of starters was very less. Next, the main course. I must say I did not put anything on my plate other than sprouted beans, papaya and melon. Nothing even looked tasty. The same food that we get in normal unrated restaurants is what could be found there. Desserts. Well, I am not really a person who is into sweet things. So, I have nothing to comment about them. The most important, AMBIENCE. One always prefers a quiet place to eat, not some place where its crowed like a station and people are shouting at the top of their voices. They really need to make a separation between tables a little more wider.
To sum up, I would never suggest Sigree if you are in a mood for Indian Food.
This is one of the few places in Chennai which provide us with quality food . The service is simply awesome and the best part about the place is the buffet , the varieties we get are one of its kind . Just one thing that pulls this place down is the prices . Would be a perfect place for family outing . Parking available
Sigree is a place which had been really popular during my heydays for giving birthday treats. Good quality food with great taste is a very well done job. Buffet does justice to the price and satisfies the taste buds with its huge variety. The A la carte might burn a hole in the pocket of a few visitors, but for the food quality , one must pay a visit to this place.
Buffet is worth the money because for the 650 odd or so, it has a wide variety of starters and being a n-w frontier resto they have delicious kebabs. Their paneer tikka is a must-try. Being a veggie i could not try everything on the menu but i did get to taste one of the best pulavs! Do drop by this resto if you want authentic kebabs!
At nungambakkam in the Hotel Aruna Complex is a gem of a hotel that serves great north indian food.
Coming to the starters : the Veg Kebab and Paneer Tikkas were simply awesome, paneer especially was juicy and succulent. Other options incude the Aloo and the Baby Corn starters. There are some good choices in the buffet which comes at around Rs.650 or so.
desserts here include some gulab jamuns and tasty ice cream scoops and more.
Drinks menu is limited here and thats maybe something that they can focus more on.
Service is good and parking is plenty.
Brilliant food for the price, good service!
Been here multiple times on business luncheons
1. Lunch Buffet spread is by far the best in food quality and taste at the price
2. Delicious Paneer and chicken starters - one can go on and on hogging them
3. Drinks menu is quite limited
4. Service is good - considering we normally go in groups of 30 and above
Food quality and taste: 4.5/5
Starters alone ~
A very tasty spread of starters. Wonderful service ! Really liked the way the waiters cared for the request and kept updating if delayed.
There were about 5+ starters and I would rate all of them 5 star !. Paneer was extremely cooked to perfection !
Moving onto main course was disappointing. The rice/pulav was kashmiri or I would even call it a kesari ! ufff,, the desert section did have a lot of varieties, but alas.. none were really excellent. Liked the ice cream to a level though.
Awesome Food, Pathetic Service
I have been to Sigree twice with my family, around 18 of us. The food there is really good. I love their starters, especially the prawns and fish. The chicken was just ordinary nothing good about that. Paneer was okay. Their service was the worst. We had to remind the staff about 10 times to get us the starter we want. When we request for prawns he would bring panner, so we actually had to wait for about 40 mins to taste the prawns again. Apart from their poor service, the food is really good. The deserts and the main course were also enjoyable.
This review is for Sunday brunch/ weekend lunch. I had a appetite for kebabs and thought of trying sigree Buffet.
I went for the non veg so that I can try the non veg kebabs and ended up eating more of vegetarian. The soup - chicken Shorba was good.
The starters were -
Veg-paneer tikka- soft succulent and good but cold, achari potato- was good veg kebab- ok
Non veg- murgh or chicken kebab was ok again cold, tandoori chicken was ok, fish was tasting different, prawn was done in a batter with a ting of coriander on the higher side.
Roasted pappad was served late.
Main course-The rotis and naans were ok. The paneer butter masala was very sweet. The dhal makkhani was average. The mutton Briyani was average. The kosha murgh or chicken gravy was high on cardamom and oily. The potato mirchi was good. The kadai vegetable was high on coriander or dhaniya.
Deserts- carrot kheer was a combo of aval payasam and carrot kheer so neither here nor their.
The surprise element in the desert was Mapuzha( not sure of the spelling) it was well immersed in jeera like a jelabi. It was awesome. The gulab jamun was pathetic. Musk melon and water melon were the two fruits both good. Ice cream- 2 flavours strawberry and vanilla. The usual veg salads raitha complete the menu.
The curd rice was ok.
If you want to have unlimited kebabs and deserts go here blindly. The main course is very ordinary. The cost is attractive at 454 for non veg.
The captain had a word at the end of my meal regarding the food and I told him my observations. He said we keep changing the menu.
Lastly THE SERVICE IS THE BEST I HAVE EXPERINCED RECENTLY.
Nice place for occasions
One of the few fine dinning places serving consistent quality North Indian food. Have been to this place for lunch. The ambience is very good. The spread is elaborate. They have both buffet and ala carte. I had ala carte. The kebabs were succulent melting in the mouth. The paneer dishes are extremely good. The food is bit spicy we have to be specific in requesting less spicy. The green chutney they give with the kebab is fresh and minty. Service is friendly quick and prompt. Cost is on the higher side. Worth trying.
We went to this place for lunch, a few days ago, from office. The last time I'd gone to this place was over a year back, and I remember relishing the food. This time though, it wasn't as great. We went for the vegetarian buffet, which was about 350 bucks. So, here's the deal. The starters were really good..the paneer tikka in particular. But that apart, the rest of the starters were just about ok. The rest of the course was average - roti, jeera rice, a paneer subzi, palak and dhal. Nothing out of the ordinary. The desserts were average, except for the malpua, which was divine! You might want to try the a la carte menu if you are a vegetarian. It might work out more expensive though.
Went to sigree with my hubby for dinner. Called for hara bhara kabab and paneer tikka for starters. The kabab was perfect, they just melted in my mouth and the mint chutney along with it was great too, it made them even yummier. Paneer tikka was perfect too, havent really had such soft paneer in Chennai. For maincourse called for mix veg makanwala and dal makhani along with roti and jeera rice. The mix veg was perfectly cooked and the spices were perfect in it and the dal makhani was good too. Overall a great meal. 4/5 for the overall experience.
starters only buffet
my philosophy(and a lot other's as well) for buffets is only the starters and desserts.. the main course is good but we generally hog so much on the starters that dont have enough space for anything else. there is a continuous down from where the start to end. the starters are just out of this world. i hate sea food but this is one of the few places where i love the fish and prawns. simply mouthwatering starters. the main course just ok. after the heavy dose of starters it tastes just ok. the desserts are awful. i would go on to suggest change of evrything thats on offer in the dessert section. if the main course and desserts improve, this would easily be the best priced buffet in town.
Very nice place to dine
My husband and I went to Sigree for dinner on one of our special days. We were very impressed with the food. The spice levels are perfect. The food is really tasty and portions are good too. Would recommend for a fine dine out. Try our their Dum Sabzi ( dont remember the exact name) . Its delicious. They open the covering(dum) in front of you and the aroma is just awesome.
BEST PLACE TO TAKE YOUR ENEMIES !!!
Horrible food. The servers were unhygenic and put their fingers on the butter naan for no reason. The place was unclean in spite of not being crowded on a Sunday afternoon.
I went there for lunch today and had to undergo an extremely poor experience. The sea food was rotten and the buffet food was stale. Too much oil and salt. Most of the food was spoilt or leftovers. The food is not worth it even if it were free. If you don't care about quality or health go here. I don't know how they are even allowed to operate like this, it takes dining to a new low.
Once upon a time this was my favorite restaurant. Gradually it got progressively worse. Today this place has gone to the dogs, quality is substandard. I am not going back there again. If you do go there I hope you don't get food poisoning.
Took my team last week and we all love this place. Great Food/Great Service and value for money.

Good north Indian food
I Have been a regular visitor to sigree for the past couple of years. i have yet to try their ala carte menu but been there to the lunch buffet. every time i go here the service and food impresses me, the servers are courteous and helpful and offer top service. And finally the food they serve three non veg and veg starters which are pretty good and authentic i particularly liked the mutton sheekh kebab which was juicy, succulent and flavorful which i don't get in any other restaurants that i have tried. their breads and biriyani are very good too. overall a nice pace to have some good north Indian food.
We, my husband and me, visited Sigree for the first time on 28th of June, 2011. Overall this place is ok..
- Staff's language and the service
- Normal waiting time for the food
- Perfect taste of food
- The Mixed veg curry... i don't know the exact term of sigree... was awesome..
- The hot brownie with ice cream was very tasty
- The major is the interiors. We were sitting in the second hall attached to the main hall. The interiors and lighting in the main hall was nice... but the attached one was too bad... They may have to change the entire stuff there...including the screens...
- The lassi was not good.. asked them to change but they modified that and brought... no other go...need to have it...:(
- The quantity of Brownie was more and the ice cream was very less. They brought one more scoop after asking... but they can standardize the size..
Overall you can try once...
This is the first time we went there. It was a very bad experience .First, they took us to a place where the ac was not working .then my father went to see a place where it was working a little .We shifted then they gave us papad and we had to wait for 10-15 minutes to get some food .The starters were very bad fish very deep fried ,prawns very salty and the mutton kebab tasted like chana dal tikki .The seats were not comfortable.
unlike barbeque nation,The buffet was very poor ,there were cockroaches around. walls paint chipping out . this was not good at all.......

This is probably my 3rd visit to this place ! The first few visits were fine but the last one , which was some weekday last week, was very disappointing . The Food was very slow and the quality bad. The Prawn starter was very salty, The fish was tasteless . The tables were uncomfortable and the place was cluttered. Every time we went to the buffet counter , there was some dish or the other that needed re-filling and we had to wait minimum 15 minutes for the same .. I may probably go back , telling myself that probably they had a bad day and were not able to cope with the crowd.
value for money
i went to Sigree for my mothers B'day ... and i had a wonderful experience there ... we went for the non veg buffet ... the starters were really good ... the cjicken tikka and the fish tikka was truely succulent ... the meet comes rite off the bones ... and i am not a great fan of veg starters but trust me they changed my opinions and i loved each dish .. panneer ticka was great in all standards..
the maincourse was decent and the desert could have been better i thought with some pastrys ,,, but definitely maincourse and desert will rank nothing less than Good ...
Prices are cheaper in comparision to bbq nation and i was truely satisfied ... i recommend sigree :)
Great Place & Food
Sigree, a part of the Speciality food chain [who i'm a big fan of] is a real nice place to dine with family/friends. The food quality is very good, even North Indian food tastes different than most of the restaurants, although they can improve a little on the quantity.
I've tried Ala' carte, but am not so sure of the buffet, will try sometime.
Good as always!
Having tried the weekday lunch buffet at Sigree & loving it, I decided to try the weekend lunch buffet too! Fortunately, I wasn't disappointed this time either.
Soups once again wasnt worth mentioning. The mutton soup that I had was watery & lacked flavour. Starters were good. We had the mutton kebab which I didnt like, tandoori chicken- juicy, succulent meat, amazing!, pani puri- surprisingly good, golden fried corn- yummy!, aloo tikki & tandoori paneer- good!
The main course didnt have much choice for the vegetarians. They had the veg pulao, dal, a paneer curry, a mixed vegetable curry, curd rice & few other items which were nothing extra ordinary. The non-vegetarian fare however was great! :) We had chicken biriyani- now officially my favourite biriyani in Chennai, rogan gosht, a chicken curry, a prawn curry & a mind blowing fish curry. Everything tasted fantastic! Only complaint is that every side dish was a gravy based dish. They could have have tried atleast one semi-gravy or dry dish. Also had makke di roti & nans.
The desserts were the best part of the meal! We had hot jalebis, gulab jamuns, ice cream, kheer (which wasnt that good), cut fruits & caramel custard. Nothing like ending the meal with such sinful treats!
Ambience is nice. Food is great. Prices are..well..not cheap but def'lly worth the food you have. VFM!
Weekday lunch buffet will make your wallet lighter by rs 300 per person & the weekend lunch buffet by around rs 450.
Been to this place like 4 or five times, both for the buffet and the a la carte. Dishes from the menu are pretty expensive so buffet would be a good option for many. The kebabs here are goooooooood! I like both the veg and n-veg kebabs. If you go there dont ever say no to the mutton seekh kebabs that they serve in the buffet, its yummy! Buffet spread was good with a paneer gravy, dal, a spinach dish and a mixed veg curry along with veg biriyani and similarly nonveg had a chicken gravy and a prawn / fish curry along with mutton biriyani. Although the waiter brought in naan, I requested then to get me a roomali roti to which he politely obliged.I somehow did not like their mutton biriyani though, asked the waiter and he said it had kewra essence and rose water in it hence the funny taste. Oh yeah, they have a chat counter as well. For dessert they had icecream, chocolate mousse , a custard of some sort, a kheer and jalebi. I had a scoop of icecream alone to wash off the 'funny' taste of the mutton biriyani.
All good things come to an end???
This is my third and probably the last review on this place. I have always loved the kebabs, in many varieties and unlimited. However, Sigree seems to be bitten by the quick money bug.
The only kebab served for starters in no more to rave about and the main course is not worth mention. The buffet is no good than any XYZ... restaurant and is definitely not worth the price. (No waiting on Sunday afternoon is an evidence?)

catchy name but no so catchy food
Ambiance,,,location,,service,,buffet style is good...the concept of unlimited starters is attractive.. chicken kebabs were really juicy and good...but all the other items in starters like prawns,,mutton,,fish was served only in the first round....the same chicken and mutton was served continuously....v had to ask for sea food every time the waiter turned up..... the starters were quite good...but the main course in buffet was pathetic......hardly had any dishes on the menu...very boring items...i had skipped the main course and directly had the desserts which was even more boring... they had the usual vanilla ice cream and gulabjamun...cud ave at least served some chocolate syrup or something....overall the starters were good,,rest nothing special..

At the onset I would like to apologize for the disappointing experience you had at Sigree, Chennai. We would definitely take cognizance of your observations.
I would request you to share your contact at email@example.com so that we can get in touch with you and know more about your experience. Please do consider the request as your feedback will help us improve.
This is my second review on Sigree and I had to reduce a star. I usually come here to devour the kebab starters (around 8 - 10 varieties) and jump into the desserts to finish off. However, they have reduced the kebab varieties in buffet to just 4 ( 2 veg & 2 non-veg).
The kebabs still taste good as ever and there is a mad rush waiting on Sunday afternoon to satisfy their hunger pangs.
The buffet, however, seems to be losing the Value for Money proposition.
A first date..or was it the first? naa.. Definitely not.If it wasn't for the sweetly smiling waiter there,we could've walked right out. They started setting the buffet, for 30 MINUTES,and our order was still not there. And the first round was just water. The buffeteers started piling up their plates and we were cursing our decision of going a la carte.Food, very very average. And once you're in the premises, you may think you're in a haunted place, but maybe thats a modern decor thingies one never gets. And I'm talking the parking and the look of the building from the outside.I was flabbergasted to see an operational elevator. :)
An experience tat might kill you....
I dont mean it in a bad way...I haven't been there in a while but when I last went there the buffet was a little pricey. but when the food starts to flow to your plate and into your mouth you forget what your paying because the food is worth every penny...the kebabs are the most succulent I have ever tasted with just the right amount of charcoal flavor and juices to make you want to keep eating... Once you get through the starters and if you can manage anythin else after, skip the biryani and go for the saffron rice and dhal makhani if its available and top it off with their jelabi if its on the buffer menu....I literally had to drag myself from the restaurant after the meal... If you ask me if I would recommend it...I would tell you go and dont even think twice about it...Oh n its not for those with lousy appetites... well i've heard the standard has gone down since I last went so hv to go see for myself...
I love the kebabs...
I have been here quite a few times on weekends. The unlimited kebabs for buffet (all types, veg & non-veg) are really awesome.
My buffet lunch / dinner is always complete with the kebabs and Naans. I never had to look out for anything else on the buffet.
This place is worth a try for all kebab lovers.
Great Food n good ambience
First things first !
Thanks to all here who gave good reviews about sigree n u guys were right ! The palce does serve good food both in the Veg n Non Veg section although i can't claim that about the buffet as i went for a la carte.
I was searching for a good place to treat family n friends on my B'day n finally zeroed on this place solely based on the reviews n must i say we were not disappointed.
Ambience is good makes u feel comfortable, Dal Makhani was the best i ever had in chennai, being a delhite im used to compare with the authentic taste of the north n this is the closest u can get , though u can wine n dine out here but i would not recommend the liquor section - they lack in that dept as their liquor menu isnt extensive n not worth mentioning.
But definetly a good family outing place - their starter mix veg katkani " im nt sure abt the name but it's smethin like tat" was great a definet tryout - the best part about the food is it's not overdone , spices were just right no generous use of spices like the punjabi's but the right amount, very appealing to the taste buds, filling n satisfying - i liked their pickles authentic north indian taste rarely found in souther parts in ny restraunt.
we were 7 n the bill came to 5g's approx tat's including 2 beers n 3 small , 5 mocktails(which were 150 each) , so if it's just the food Veg n Non veg should be 450-500 per head , Great deal !
End of the Day - A definet recommend , sould go to this place won't regret it.
Again - many thanks to all for their good reviews which helped decide n it was worth it.
Good food. Good portions.
Interiors re well done and spacious. Quite a contrast to the outside. Parking can be a problem so you may have to park outside.
the buffet is a pretty small spread with jus a soup, 4 subzis - a paneer, an aloo, a vegetable and a dal, and rice. ther is a similar spread for the non veg as well. desserts incl. ice cream, jilebi and gulab jamuns.
if u choose to go a la carte, the options are many. but the prices written as "two hundred rupees" below each item is rather funny.
the starter paneer rawalpindi has abt 6 slices and boy! re they huge! like those patrons who ve reviewed before me, i agree that the dal makhani is delicious and so is the mixed veg gravy( i cant rem the exact name but they cook it in mustard oil, so it tastes a lil different but nice nontheless). the breads are ok. now for the best part dessert, we had sizzling brownie with ice cream, but OH my GOd! the size of that brownie was monstrous , it was like some colossal soap bar! but the it was pretty decent but the ice cream scoop is way too small to compete with the brownie, so it wont last u till the end.. but look at this way its price is the same almost everywhere but at least here u get a huge portion!! :)
service is prompt and waiters are courteous. but the portions are quite filling, so visit this place only if u're pretty hungry if u want to do justice to the food.
Awesome starters. Great buffet.
I would say this is equivalent of Samarkhand, Bangalore. Theme is NorthWest Frontier which is almost same as Afghan. Ambience is cosy & great. Buffet is simply superb. As someone else mentioned it's a startup heaven. Go for a buffet (costs 440) to enjoy the most.
If you're one of those people who live off starters, this the place to be. Many of my friends have a tough time deciding between this place and Barbeque nation. Well these are my two hangouts..!!
So i make choice simple for my friends - This place is all about the food. Perfection everytime. Barbeque nation has a different ambience but their food rates quite low on my scale.
Sigree is located at the 5th Floor of the Hotel Aruna Complex. The complex has some drawbacks.: Inadequate parking, Shabby elevator, spooky staircases. However all is different once you step into Sigree.
Great Food coupled with surprisingly good service makes Sigree a must-go-to restaurant in Chennai. Good Options are available in both Veg and Non-Veg.
Tried the Masala Chas, Jaljeera, Panner Rawalpindi, Bhindi with Aamchur with good results. The pick of the dishes had to be - the Dal Makhni. This simple dish to make but easy to screw up had the tastebuds asking for more.
Portions are good and filling. Service is always with a smile.
The price is a little high for a-la-carte though.
Try and go early though as the place gets packed after 8pm.
Nice Dining experience
If you are gonna have ur lunch in sigree don even think of having a-la-carte....the dishes are extremely over priced...compared to tat...the 350 bucks buffet is many a times better...nice ambience and really friendly waiters...they actually pulled the chair when they seated us :)... the starters and soup served to u....yummy stuff....i had a panner starter...and there was the babycorn fry which was also yummy....the soup was dal shorba( parupu jalam... :D ) the spread was biryani, paneer, aloo subzi. ladies finger subzi, and black gram dal... naan, rumali roti and paratha....and the deserts were also nice...there was the ice creal...gulab jamun...the fruit salad...ther was somethin which looked lik adirasam...but slighltly smaller...but was delicious...den ther was this bread sandwich...another sweet which was again good...overall...highly recommended even thou the price is slighly steep....
Best restaurant I've eaten in Chennai so far!
After reading the reviews here at burrp! I decided to dine at Sigree. I went there last sunday and I was not disappointed. In fact, I really loved it! The food was totally yummy and the dal makhani was just outta this world! My parents also loved the non veg dishes and it was a well worth outing for my dad's b'day. This is 1 place where veg and non veg was equally good. The service was also very good with very friendly waiters always wearing a smile. One complaint I have is that the chairs are low and my mom couldn't get up after eating!
keep it up
too many good reviews for the restaurant made it an irresistible choice for our dinner this time! the ambiance is good, and the place is pretty crowded no wonder! but still the service is good and patient.
I hated the tomato soup, maybe m so used to the Italian version of it nowadays and din like the shorba kind, but seemed stale to me i dono y. i was kinda starting to get disappointed but the multani chaat as a starter did a great job in surprising the taste buds! every bite was yummy and a different sweet and spicy mix...the jal jeera was ok nothin great...
Main course was contradictions! The romali roti was nice and soft, the laccha parata was too hard, the biryani was too spicy but was good enough, the subz dum was good and finally the dal makhani was outa the world! ahhhhhhhh i hate dal and they made me love it to the core! it just melted in the mouth! Desserts seemed very innovative but in the end the Kulfiglasswali they recommended was nothing but kulfi cut into pieces inside a glass! i mean i dono what else i expected but i at least thought it wud b much more liquidized than usual when on a glass!
The place is all about the food so my review has more about each item in detail than the ambiance or service... tho there was no complaints about them either! Overall, lovely place didnt let me down which usually happens after too many good reviews!
A complete eating out experience
Had visited this place twice and would not hesitate for more visits.Without doubt they have one of the best north indian/NWF cuisines in chennai.
I had gone for a dinner and the hospitality was top notch, not to say about the ambience and very friendly service. The shorbas were really yummy, had the mutton shorba, the meat was very finely sliced and the taste still lingers. It was a BIG slurp and in minutes the soup was over, never do i remember cleaning up the soup bowl so quickly. Would rate their shorba the best and the second wud go to Karaikudi Dhaba. The meat was easily the best cooked and would just melt in. Did not have to struggle with the naans as they were soft and easy to pull apart. On the whole an effortless eating experience.
Their biryani had the home made taste and the way they serve it makes it more special. The kababs and the vegetarian starters were outstanding. This is one place which has a perfect blend of variety for both vegetarians and non vegetarians,if you are a group of folks with mixed preferences, sigree is the place to be in. The food is addictive and if not for the travelling time from my place I would be visiting Sigree everyday to fill myself up.
The costs are on par with any high end restaurant and hence we need not think twice about throwing up a party for a small group.
Good food, Good service
Went to Sigree for a small get together with 2 of my close friends. We were apprehensive how the place would be but the ambience was good and we immediately felt at ease. The Mint drink starters was great and we started off the buffet. The mix of both veggie and non veg dishes was good and the menu had the perfect North indian taste and was good. I dont remember all the dishes but we did not have any complaints. The prices were reasonable (Rs 250/- lunch buffet) and naans were very soft and made right.
Excellent dining/hogging experience
I decided to go to Sigree solely on the basis of its good reviews out here & I'm glad I went there.
I went there with 7 of my friends. As we entered the restaurant, we were welcomed with warm smiles. We decided to have the lunch buffet. The soups were pretty bad, I must say. We had something called 'mutton shorba' which tasted really bad, to say the least. The starters were good. We had mutton tikka & tandoori chicken, both of which looked & tasted delicious! Also had corn fingers & paneer tikka- tasted pretty good.
For the main course, we had Chicken Biriyani- one of the best biriyanis I've ever had in my life. It looked appetizing & tasted yummy! Had this amazing flavour of saffron. Perfect lucknowi biriyani!, this really tasty fish curry with mint, rogan gosht & some chicken curry. The nans were soft & smeared with a dollop of butter..YUMM! I wanted to taste the vegetarian dishes too but was too full to do so!
For dessert, we had coconut kheer, malpua - had it for the first time in my life, loved it..was hot & syrupy..delicious!, chocolte brownie with ice cream.
I loved the food here. It was more than just satusfying. The service too was good that by the end of the meal, I was a very happy customer. Sigree is one of the few places in the city which serves good food, has a classy yet laid back ambience & has great service too! I cant ask for more!
Rich & Wholesome
Not the two words that should come out of a eat as much as you want buffet- but it truly is.
I did get a chance to try out the food on several equally spaced occasions, and one of the nicest feelings is that its quality has remained the same.
The starter concept is lovely, and the captains and waiters take time to explain. The mango / sweet pickle on the table, topped on some nice malai kebab still makes one tongue tingle and tastebuds alert.
The Dal Sigree - one of the best that I have tasted, that coupled with a stuffed kulcha makes a fantablous meal for both the vegetarians as well as the non-veges. This is one of those few places that has quite a spread for both sides of the table.
However, I would want to knock off about 1/2 (Half) a point for the slightly in-convenient seating that exists.
Planning on visiting Sigree again, so let me re-look at the seating arrangements.
The ambiance gets a 4/5 - there's nothing which hits me on the face and says - wow- this is a great place. Yes, its well arranged, well lit and the air-conditioning is very pleasant. The staff are well trained and very courteous.
the food gets a 5/5 - however my better half did find the food too rich.
EDIT!: 21/11/08- 2315 hours.
I just got back from Sigree, and a very strange sense of unfulfillment is washing over me. Yes, the starters were nice, but as the crowds pulled in, the waiters were rushing all over. We had asked for more starters, but the waiter conveniently forgot and started with the main course.
Now, the sit- down buffet is basically when they bring you all what is on the menu - right? but thats not the case, they just brought us a biryani, two gravys and some roti. We had to ask for raita (which never came) and the Dal Sigree, which came at the fag end. Also, there were no vegetarian starters that came and no veg food came either.
Aand yes- the seats are rather un-comfortable.
Now that Ive got that off my chest, the food was still top notch, the kebabs were succulent and well marinated. I liked the hariyali kebab the most. The Shiek kebabs were also very nice. Now that they have kept up their food quality, I just wish they get back to the old buffet format of the restaurant, I liked that better.
note: The opinions expressed here are purely my own, and need not reflect the capabilities of either the establishment or of the management.
Sigree stamps its class
After a very long time, the word different actually acquired meaning on a menu card. Far from the exotic descriptions and the mundane prescriptions,Sigree's dishes really do play with your taste buds.
The restaurant has an interesting variety of starters. The sweet and sour chat is a great way to start things off! Its tangy after taste will surely propel you to indulge yourself just that once more.
What followed was mixed vegetable curry and a really different bhindi dish. the bhindi dish was cooked in a white sauce and had a melange of flavours that added a tangy taste. The first spoonful was a bit of a shock to the senses, but the rest opened up new vistas in gastronomy.
Sizzling brownie has become a regular feature in the desrt menus at many joints. Needless to say it was good without presuming to offer anything new. The kulfi too was as it should be.
The one grouse I do have though, is that the menu card is heavy to hold but light to read!!! Expect a minor dent in your pocket though.
With some exotic additions to their menu, sigree could definitely offer a new experience for chennaiites bored with the old wine in the old bottle routine!!!
North-west Frontier cusine is quite a tricky area to explore in a city like Chennai. On many occasions, me and my friends have been a "victim" to bad food, bad service and what not!
Sigree is a paradigm shift. Sigree is a place you are treated with utmost respect and care. I met Amar there who served me with so much care and delight. We got talking and I was surprised when I heard this dude who serves at Sigree is a part-time management grad who's completing his education to enter greener pastures in life.
The people who serve at Sigree make sure that you know what food you're ordering and your tastes are taken care of. They don't want a mismatch between your expectation of the food and reality when the dish arrives!
On one occasion, a few months back, I was not quite happy with the quality of food and I just ticked off a comment to one of the waiters. They were obviously busy with guests and it was quite a crowd that day. As me and my friend finished and settled the bill, out came the Manager with the chef, and Amar was also there.
They apologized and said that they would make my experience much memorable the next time. As I walked out glancing through my copy of the bill, I noticed to my surprise that Amar had not charged me for the item that I had complained about.
The dinner buffet spread gives you value for money and an idea of the cusine they serve. Save space for dessert as they are sinful and tempting.
Pricing is high for fine-dining, but the ambience and food make it worth the visit.
Sigree. I'd come back for more. Any day.
'Stick to the basics' is one advice that works across industries and people. Sigree does just that.....the basics of the restuarant business is good food. And I must say they do a fantastic job of it. Mouth watering delicacies....everything from the soup to the dessert. We visited this place after checking out the reviews on this site and were so not dissappointed.
Started our dinner with the mint flavoured tomato soup and makkai seekh kebab(corn kababs), followed it with rotis and a mixed vegetable mushroom vegetable and finally to the yummy subz chilman biryani......it was simply outstanding. The aroma took our breath away and the taste lived up to the expectations created by it. The restuarant was well laid out with a fantastic ambience. Service is extremely good with attentive staff though one would wish they dont butt in so frequently to check whether the patrons like the food. There was some delay in getting our starter and more than 3 people came apologizing to us. We heartily forgave that and lost ourselves in the tomato soup. As part of their 2nd anniversary we got complimentary blue colored 'nimbu paani' and 'jalebi with rabri'. Though this was not so good I cant complain about free food. Am getting to love Speciality Restuarant brands with Sigree and of course, Mainland China. Hope the other brands are launched in Chennai soon!
Food with Magical Aroma
Wanted to try new and something different after a tiring day @ Chennai. Conversed with the auto driver telling him what kind of a restaurant we are looking for in my broken tamil and let him decide on the restaurant.
Guess what!!?? He dropped us at an amazing place :)
It was a pretty big complex and contained the boards of different restaurants. We were delighted and very thankful to the auto driver who let us curb our hunger in style.
The complex consisted of Mainland China, Tandoor, The Pub Hub and the Sigree. All this, we gotta know comes under the Speciality Restaurants Group.
Didn't wanted to try Mainland China and Tandoor as we have them in Bangalore.
We thought we would try our hands with The Pub Hub. Since, many of our friends were Teatotallers, we changed our decision and stepped into Sigree. The restaurant was huge and Spacious, very well lit (infact it was too bright, hitting us from all the directions). They played the old hindi instrumental which is supposed to be very soothing and melodious to the ears but unfortunately it was just tooooooo loud. The tables were low, wide and broad
Sigree, basically means food cooked in a snails pace in an iron vessel (An ethnic vessel called Lagan) over charcoal. For most of the dishes, they claim, a variety of ingredients is soaked and cooked for as long as 40 hours.
The ambience was good and we gotta see a different crowd from what we saw in the mornings. It was hot and happening and my guy friends finally gotta see gals with skimpy clothes and were more than happy as they were missing all this from the time we stepped into chennai.
Now, coming to the food part, we had amazingly soft rotis, a mixed-veg gravy, chicken gravy (my friends loved it so much, they relished licking their finger)
Then came the most interesting one.. The Biryani :) It had such good aroma, we were all flat over it. Completely fell for it. It had a very different aroma.. Very different from the one we get in Bangalore. The rice was perfectly cooked with a pinch of Kesar
Few of us also had drinks but, nothing can beat bangalore in that. They did not have a menu card for the drinks. Hence, the waiter had to give us the list orally and he wasnt good enough in doing that.
Overall, the seating was perfectly placed, ambience was good, food was delicious and amazingly good, music was too loud (Should I say Noisy??) and the lighting was too bright. Having 3 restaurants and 1 bar, there was very less parking space (Was not a problem for us as we caught a auto rickshaw)
Highly recommended for the first timers @ chennai
and definitely for people who hail from chennai :)
Fantastic Frontier Food
The North West Frontier province always manages to evoke images of battle-hardened Pathans, Pashtuns and Baluchis riding camels and horses and generally indulging in community eating - a roast camel and pilaf perhaps.
While Sigree does not serve roast ships of the desert, it still serves some excellent kebabs and pilafs. The only reason I give it 4/5 is the horrendous parking system Quality Inn Aruna has.
