Decent Chinese Food
I have been to this place a couple of times to fulfill my cravings for decent Chinese food (read: Manchurians and chopsueys). Its on the main Madhapur road and easily located.
The interiors are decently done. Nothing too great but right for its positioning. The ambiance is usually decent. People will usually come here to fill their stomachs rather than to "experience Chinese fine dining". In this context, its a nice place to have decent food.
The food itself is pretty ok. Certainly not awesome but right for the price. Its a bit on the oily side usually but nothing that is a cause for concern. Service too is decent. I have had to wait at times for someone to take my order or to clean a used up table. Overall, its worth a visit once.
Awesome Chinese Food
I have been here couple of times with my friend, we really enjoyed the food, the service and obviously the ambience.
We loved the Manchow soup here, I guess its the best I have ever had. We had a full course dinner and price was just Rs. 400. Its really affordable.
The food was really quality, loved it. Coming to service, I liked it. Waiters were polite and helpful.
The ambiance was really nice and its located to side of main road, so you get to see a beautiful sight during night.
Good Chinese food at reasonable price
I had visited this place 3-4 times, and thus writing a review. The last time we visited this place was on 8th February. I am writing this review based on the sum-total experience of the past visits.
The place is generally empty on weekdays (I had visited this place only on weekdays) and you can find only 2 or 3 (max) tables are occupied. The seats at the side of the glass panes are good, as they give good views of the road. Ambience is neat, minimalistic yet gives an oriental flavor.
The staffs are courteous and helpful. We were always seated promptly after arriving. The orders were taken promptly and served within reasonable timeline. Portions are almost always good- and one dish is enough for two people. Last time I and my wife ordered for two starters, and we were so full that had to ask the waiters to pack 75% of the main course dishes.
The food is tasty and at par with any good Chinese restaurant. Their Taipei Chicken, Chicken drumsticks and Hunan Chicken were awesome (as starters). They served Thai food too, but I have never experienced that. There are two problems in foodone, the lack of dessert dishes (they had few only) and two, I had tried their mutton dishes twice and both the times the quality of mutton was not good. It was hard and difficult to chew.
The food is adequately priced. It means, it is priced almost same with similar restaurants (like Bowl O China) and almost half of the price of Mainland China (we actually ordered once same food in Shanghai Chef that we had just few weeks back in Mainland China; the bill of Mainland China was Rs 1600 where the bill of Shanghai Chef was Rs 820). A perfect meal for two would cost you between 600-900 bucks (depending upon what you order and how much you eat).
There is only one irritation about this restaurant. Mostly, we visit the restaurant after 9:30/10PM. The restaurants of Madhapur/Kondapur/Hitec City areas generally get closed by 11PM. But, Shanghai Chef was always in hurry. They started to put up the curtains by 10:30, and the waiters would do the same by standing in the next chair while you are trying to eat your food. This causes annoyance. Also, the main entrance gets closed by 10:30 and it is difficult (for a first timer) to find out the exit path.
Overall, I would recommend this restaurant for good Chinese food at reasonable price.
Ambience (Weightage: 10%): 4/5
Service: (Weightage: 30%): 4.5/5
Food (Weightage: 30%): 4.5/5 (good, tasty)
Value for money (Weightage: 30%): 4/5
Very Bad Experience
i ordered for veg food and waiter brought non veg food.. when we complained they were smiling instead of feeling sorry. Even the manager's response was very bad. I advice all veggies to be extra careful since staff of this restaurant have no respect for your food habits...
i had many grt evenings here ,i love this chef bcoz of its different taste kothe is my fav dish and baboo rice wiyh oyster chicken ohh mouth waterin dish ........i even saw their kitchen recently on 8-oct-2011 its Hygiene in the kitchen ..........and this subhayan the review below, he came drunk it seems and warned for rupees of 20,000 i knew the whole story....
Contaminated Food caused food poisoning
On 30th June 2011, I ordered some food items from Shanghai Chef , Madhapur(Bill No: 23 dated 30/06/11) for home delivery.
The taste of the items was pathetic and moreover 2-3 persons (including me) who ate that food got food poisoning. And this Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that occur suddenly (within 8 hours) after consuming that contaminated food.
We ordered for Drums of heaven(chicken), Cilly Chicken, Veg Machurian, Mix noodles, Mixed Fried rice. Dont know which item caused this food poisoning.
Seriously disappointed with the food quality.
cosy little place!
gr8 place for a laid back afternoon/evening..!! was surprised to see thai food on the menu... but then...loved the thai red curry... they served it generously alongside a bowl of rice...! was a pleasant meal... the service was quick... the place was neater than most chinese joints... so.. am happy..! :)
decent place to visit
it's a nice little chinese joint, with clean, uncluttered ambience and good service. the food is good, but doesn't have a "wow" factor. nice for a lazy sunday lunch, when you are too tired to go to a self-service place, and too unacring to dress up for a high-end experience
Lemon Chicken - A dessert at its own time
If you are ever incharge of managing someone else's 200 bucks and have a couple of hours to waste, and a palate to exact a revenge on, I recommend you to Shanghai Chef.
Assuredly, the chef is very much an Indian, and I suspect from one of the sweet town of India - Banaras or Hathras. For who can conjure the idea of a lemon chicken as lobs of chicken sauteed in a clear-white chashni of sugar, served cold, 2 hours after being ordered?
As for myself, I was treating a few friends who had leeched out an unwilling promise of a treat. Therefore I consider it a worthy that I could give them a painful experience at Shaghai Chef. For those who have nothing to fear from me, i.e. who are not my friends, I have the following advice: skip this place
Go back to Shanghai...spare us
we went to the Gachibowli outlet for the first time and most definitely the last.food was horrible so ambience doesn't matter.service is poor.Roadside fast food stalls make better noodles than the schezwan chicken noodles we ordered.chug Hua or nanking are much better places to have chinese food.
Nice Ambiance good food but pathetic service!!
I have been to this place many times as I like the food here, this is a place to be visited on Weekdays, as the limited staff is not at all capable enough to tackle the Weekend rush. So you might not feel the weekend dinner charm here.
Rate is moderate and food is of good quality.
Shanghai Chef - New Branch near Gachibowli - Yuk
Most horrible experience. On their Menu they have Stir Fry Veges with Basil. We ordered and got a lard of curry with god knows how much corn flour . The basil was no where in sight. I asked the chef that this should be sauted veges with slight curry of vinegar, soya. The chef had no idea what these dishes are.
Anyway they have all these International Thai Named dishes on their Menu but have no idea on how to make this. Even their Tom Kha soup was thick coconut milk with some milk mixed. If you go stick to the Indian Chinese stuff like veg noodles and Manchurian
Where is the chef from shanghai or chinchpokli (street in mumbai).....????????
I guess this is enough to say about the restaurant...
There is nothing good about it .... food, ambience, service, management all are below average.... been to this place twice... came the second time only to give the joint a benefit of doubt thinkin tht might be my selection of food was not good the first time.... but I was proved wrong when I visited the next time... It only made me sure tht It is not worth spending ur money n time on such a place...!!!!
There are better Chinese joints in & around the area.. n better still get Chings ready made sauce mixes, make ur own chinese food and enjoy it in the comfort of ur home....
Value for money..all the way
I haven't seen another restaurant that serves Diet Coke cans for Rs 20/-. Meal for 2 won't cost you more than 500/-, with bottled water, coke, starters and main-course.
Cool ambience....not that you will get floored!! but Nice
Chinese food tends to towards the Indianized-Chinese cuisine, but still suits my taste. If you are looking for something more authentic try the Thai/Malaysian menu. Though limited range, the "red curry" and "ayam masak" (not sure about the spelling though) is quite promising.
I have also heard a lot about the weekday corporate lunch buffet..look forward to try some-day.
Value for money
We (H,W+2kids) went for a dinner and had a mixed experience. The good aspects were -
1. Excellent food quality
2. Excellent food quantity
3. Very reasonable prices
The not so good aspects were -
1. Approach to the restaurant
2. Amount of waiting time. We went at 9.15 pm and finally got a table at 10.15 pm.
3. Careless and uncourteous staff (perhaps overworked in an over crowded place but that is the restaurant owner's problem, not mine)
4. Since quantity is good, try to order less. Getting the left over food packed may not be a good idea as the folks packed less than half of what was left and we got to know only next day when we opened the packs.
I would certainly go there again but perhaps avoid the weekend rush.
Excellent dumplings in the city
I have tried almost all the chinese restaurants in the city including the 5 stars, but the dumplings here are far better than anywhere else in the city. Other dishes are also quite OK...atleast you dont regret for ordering them unlike in many other chinese places.
Average Chinese fair...
We went to Shanghai Chef couple of months back on a Friday evening 715pm since we have been seeing these nice lights from the main road for so many months. For starters the entry is something that puts you off, it just doesn't feel that great walking through the winding stairs and walkway. Coming to the restaurant the waiters were courteous and polite. However having two kids, we asked for a dish with mushroom and boom - they didn't have mushrooms that evening. A Chinese place out of mushroom is not a good thing. Anyways, we ended up ordering a Schezuan dish and some soft noodles (for the kids). The food itself was fairly average, nothing to write home about. The prices were also okay, we paid Rs 600 for two adults and two kids. However the overall experience was very average, something I won't want to go again...
