If you thought living in the dry-state was going to be a sordid affair, think again. There are always ways to spend an evening without clutching a bottle of alcohol and in Ahmedabad; there is something for everyone and virtually every mood.
Artistic evenings @ Natrani
Lovers of art bend your time lines towards danseuse Mallika Saarabhai’s Natrani. Soulful yellow dim-lights in an exposed brickwork space with a stage set for music, dance, and theatre we could easily see ourselves spending a few evenings here. There are regular classes for those who want to learn the arts. Art exhibitions and festivals are also a constant here.
Even if you don’t have a bent for the arts, the aroma of South Indian filter coffee from the Natrani Café is sure to draw you here. The Pudina lemon juice (Rs 60), Mushroom rice (Rs 110) and White pasta with mushrooms (Rs 120) are other gulp and gobble-worthy things here. Curl up with a book in the mosaicked seating and catch up on long-due conversations with friends. This is just the place to unwind after a hard day’s work.
Stop and shop @ Alpha Mall
If whizzing frenzied humans, red signboards splashing SALE and precariously balanced shopping bags on carts sound interesting to you, then Alpha Mall should be your evening haunt. Every brand worth its ludicrously expensive price tag holds its fort on the floor seducing shopaholics of Amdavad with snazzy display windows and loads of deals.
Reel life @ Cinepolis
Sign off the night with a show at Cinepolis that boasts of the ample leg space it provides in front of its plush seats. Dunk in to your tubs of caramel popcorn (Rs100) and let the moving images ease you after a strenuous shopping spree.
A tryst with peace @ Old City
For those of you with a spiritual bent of mind, the Siddhi Saiyyed Masjid is a must-visit. An arcuated (having arches) mosque, its delicately carved lattice-worked windows known as the Siddhi Saiyyed ki Jaali has remained an unofficial symbol of the city over the years. Nestled in the old world parts of what was once known as Karnavati, in the heart of the markets, there is the Jamma Masjid or the Friday Mosque.
Head here to take in a quiet moment, away from the bustling chaos of the Teen Darwaza market.
Evenings in Ahmedabad may not involve pub hopping or beer guzzling excitement, but what it involves instead is a wonderful possibility of a new kind of nightlife and a new story to tell every evening.
