Decent food and prices
Having 5 spice in fort helps a lot of the office people for some decent chinese food at affordable prices. Have ordered in office quite a few times and eaten at the restaurant too. The restaurant could do with a little cleaner ambience and help the stuff atmosphere there. The Mongolian pot rice is really good and worth it. The wantons came too oily but their starters are never disappointing. The quantity of 5 spice is more than enough to order for a large group of people. Service is decent and it is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants around.
authentic Chinese cuisine
With "quantity inversely proportional to price" being the new mantra for specialty restaurants, 5SPICE comes to the rescue of all mumbaikars !!!
Ample servings for all the dishes and nicely cooked starters makes it a divine place. The veg appetizers are as great
The noodles or rice are just too much even for two people to have a sumptuous meal and you will feel like having a buffet.
The quality of service is fabulous as they won't keep you waiting for more than 5 minutes, nice cosy settings (you can go for an AC or a non AC)
I would definitely recommend this Chinese restaurant for a nice hang out dinner with all your friends/family. Such delicacies at such a price and in such a beautiful surrounding is quite rare in Mumbai for sure.
Big portion sizes & quality food
one of my favourite oriental restaurants...i love the nankin rice...thai soup..the portion size is huge which makes it quite affordable...ambience is decent..at times they do get pushy when they have alot of waiting...but you cant forget mentioning their desserts; mission impossible, rockky road :) the best in chinese...also their other branches are not as good as the one in Fort
Eat & Forget. Repeat.
semi desi semi authentic chinese restaurant chain spread across the length &
breadth of Mumbai. A place where the portion sizes are given by the kilos, literally.
Probably, the reason why more family /friends are spotted than couples. The crisp 'veg crunchies/crispies' is a must try as appetizers. 'Peking & Nanking lotus rice' seem to be top fav with exotic veg in hunan sauce. The more imp reason tht ppl head to this place is to look fwd to they're desserts- rocky road & mission impossible. Rocky road, dallops of vanilla ice cream with choco brownie is thrown into a cocktail glass topped up with caramel flakes, nuts & choco chips.
Another called 'Mission Impossible" does justice to it's name with it needing at least 2-3 people (post dinner) to clean it off the plate. The cost of these are quite justified in terms of the taste leaving aside its authentic nature into consideration also providing excellent value for money.
Value for money & DESSERTS TO DIE FOR
This place is a value for money place in terms of the quantity of a portion and also the yummy chinese..The veg pot rice & burnt garlic rice is out of this world..the soups are also good..in starters the chilly crispy potatoes are a must try..And And And..The Desserts..Well i dont have words to describe the desserts..Death by chocolate,Mission Impossible,Rocky Road,Blueberry cheesecake,Brownie,Molten chocolate..well i can keep writing about the desserts..they are so yummilicious !!!!
5 spice rustles up authentic Chinese cuisine with large portions at a reasonable price. Service can get a little slow at times. The ambience at this outlet is decent and not as grand as the bandra one and other outlets, since they have space constraints. A good pocket-friendly place for Chinese food lovers.
Don't try this anymore!!
Have just walked out of this place after a horrendous meal. The first time I went to this place was 8 years back and have always vouched for its food quality since then. Came up with a few branches elsewhere but could never beat the quality of the original. But today, this has surpassed the tag of Bad Restaurant. Kung Pao Potato was floating in oil. Burnt chilly rice which was one of their specialities did not have any flavour, just bland. Paneer in Black Pepper was just a lump of a white solid dipped in black gravy. Lemon Mojito was just simply bad, mint was too strong. Waste of money, time and effort. To top it off the attitude of the staff was extremely callous. Never ever coming back here.
I m a Chinese lover and off late i discovered this great place, ohh man i was sooo happy and satisfied after coming here and trying the world"s best Chinese i cud ever had or tried.. this place is awesome, lil spacious and simple. i like the Chinese attendees there in their traditional outfit. full marks for the cusine, taste, look and feel etc... 10 on 10. its worth of price.
Located in the fort area, was a bit of a challenge for to find it while visiting for thr 1st time as there are numerous lanes.
Coming to the restaurant via Asiatic steps is a better option.
On most days there is huge waiting line to get in but its well worth the wait, ample seating is provided outside and the staff is courteous.
there is an AC and Non AC section as well, generally AC section has a longer wait time.
The Quantity of food served is excellent for the price, true Value for Money.
Mint cooler with a desert to have some rice and a gravy and you have a hearty meal and the damages are also not too high.
Visited many times and will continue to do so.
HORRIBLE FOOD...RUDE STAFF!!
I have been a regular visitor of 5 Spice in Bandra ever since I moved to Mumbai. I love their appetizers, mains and desserts; and find their portion-sizes to be extremely generous! The ambiance of the restaurant is lovely and the staff courteous...And I sing these praises despite the fact that in 5-Spice, Chinese cuisine is not really authentic but comes with a slightly Punjabi touch of flavour.
This Sunday was my first visit to 5 Spice that is situated in the Fort area. I was looking forward to a good time but alas, I was in for a shock! No, I am not being dramatic. When we reached at 7:45 p.m. there was already a big queue waiting outside the restaurant and we were told that we need to wait for 25 minutes before we get a seat inside. Since most restaurants were crowded owing to Kala Ghoda Arts Festival that was happening, we decided to wait. The 25 minutes actually translated to 45 minutes. I have waited for my turn outside restaurants before but when the duration is specified, never have I had to extend my wait for more than 5 minutes. I was a little irritated especially because only those people who were constantly reminding the maître d that they were waiting outside would be called inside. It was only when we saw that people who had come after us were getting seats that we started reminding him that we had been sitting outside for a very long time. Within 10 minutes after that reminder we were escorted to our table.
It is said that good things always come to those who wait. Unfortunately, this saying was proved false at this particular restaurant. Our table-top was sticky and no one had bothered cleaning the table properly as a result of which, I, myself, began the task of cleaning the rice grains on the table with tissues. After three reminders, a waiter came and swabbed the table but he didn't really do a good job - the tables remained dirty throughout.
We were not the only ones who were irritated. The man sitting at the table next to us also screamed at the waiters - he had been waiting for his order to arrive for over an hour. As we looked around we saw that we were not the only ones with no food at our table. Most people were just chatting and asking waiters when would their food arrive. Some tables had not even been served water. The waiters were conveniently avoiding looking into the customers' eyes and ignoring the voices that called out to them. There was only one waiter who seemed dedicated enough but he really could not do much! We realized that the waiting-time had been long outside because no one was leaving the restaurant as no one was being served food on time.
Our order had been taken promptly within 5 minutes of our arrival but they served us after 45 minutes. Waiting outside to get a seat took the same amount of time as getting served inside. I have waited outside restaurants before but the moment you are inside, there has been no delay in service after that. What made it worse was that the quality of food was also not up to the mark. We had ordered a plate of fried chicken wantons. While some of the wantons on our plate were fine, there were some dripping in oil. We were so hungry that we did not have the patience to send it back and wait for a fresh order. The experience with the mains was equally horrid! I have never eaten food that tasted bad at 5 Spice. I have been to their branch in Bandra more than ten times and I have tried most of the items on their menu. Another set of people at the table next to us were also complaining about the food and how bad it was. There was no attempt made to replace the dish - the waiter merely asked them to select something else.
When we tried pointing out to the maître dof the bad service, he was extremely rude! Tempers are high usually when a restaurant is over-crowded but being discourteous to guests is unacceptable. Also if a restaurant cannot manage that many people, it should not entertain that number. I have visited 'Pizza Hut' many times - they are alright with having a lot of tables empty but they will not seat guests inside if they do not have the capacity of serving them. My father used to say that you can actually test how good a restaurant is if you go on a busy day. It is only then can you rate their true service. I find myself in total agreement with him after this experience.
We left more than three-fourth of the mains that we had ordered. Even though we packed it, I knew I was never going to eat it again. I felt extremely guilty giving the food to a beggar - though beggars cannot be choosers, I felt that even they did not deserve to eat the food.
We had to ask the waiters for a suggestion card at the end of our meal. I mentioned by dissatisfaction and I found all the waiters and managers gathered around reading it. They had rather smug expressions on their face and were treating it as if it was a joke! Whenever I have left comments at any restaurant, if the food has not been good, we have always had someone coming to our table and apologizing or at least asking us to elaborate more on our bad experience. Dismissing the comments so callously actually increased my fury!
I wasted more than three hours of a precious Sunday evening here and it was a disastrous idea! I would recommend everyone to stay away from the outlet of 5 Spice in Fort. If they wish to enjoy a meal at 5 Spice, they should stick to the one in Bandra or try out other Chinese restaurants.
Visited the fort 5 spice with some colleagues. Was surprised to see how inflexible 5 Spice is, given that it's a sit-down restaurant.
1. They refused to add some prawns in the Mongilian pot rice we ordered. Even though we were willing to pay extra!!!
2. On our dessert, Death by Chocolate with Chocolate ice cream, they refused to change the ice cream to Vanilla.
Plus, they took 15 mins to give me a glass of hot water!
The food was enjoyable but for me service and hospitality is very important. Little things matter when you're having a meal.
Pathetic Service & Rude Behavior
Called for bulk order and was straight away denied to give the order on time! We had ordered couple of times from this branch!
Mr. Prakash was very rude on phone and doesnt know to answer customer queries! I had placed a complete order and requested him to give us a takeaway at 12.30 p.m. Knowing a bulk order, he denied giving us on time! Also, prices charged in Fort branch is higher then other branches in suburb! Still doesnt have a c ourtesy to please their customers.
Mr. Prakash should respect customers rather than showing attitude.
Great quantities of good food
I have been a regular at 5 spice for years in this one as well as others in Bandra & Oshiwara but I still like this one the best. Fantastic variety of good food, with huge quantities. In fact this is the only place I know where the managers taking orders insist that you don't order another portion as 1 would suffice.
Service can be a little iffy but thats more than made up by the food & most importantly the desserts. Mission Impossible, rocky road, etc. In the soups, try the spicy crab meat
During the weekends there is generally a waiting time, but the wait is well worth it.
The ambiance even in the Non AC part of the restaurant is good and there is a certain buzz about the place. The waiters are very friendly and helpful and your order also doesn't take long to come by as well.
The food here is always tasty and the quantity of food given is also very good.
There are a LOT of options for vegetarians as well, which isn't generally the case with most Chinese restaurants.
The Wontons are a must have plus the burnt garlic soup is Yum.
The different varieties of Pot Rice are excellent and the desert menu is also good. All in all a great place to have a full course meal :)
And even after eating a lot it won't burn a hole in your pocket.
Go-To chinese palce
this particular branch is my favorite one. Yes, there is waiting almost all the time but the service is better than the bandra branch. The manager personally takes an interest in the customer. The food comes quicker. The waiters do not need to be called 5 times for them to actually show up. As for the food - the thai pot noodles is definitely my go-to item to call for. The desserts are mouthwatering too. The quantity is amazing and two people can easily get STUFFED with one dish.
5 Spice has always been my favorite, if its about Chinese..! Somehow I prefer it more than any of the well known Chinese restaurants in Mumbai.
The ambience is quiet but can get noisy if crowd starts showing up, mainly because there is not much space between tables.
You have to spend all your time in enjoying the food; it looks, smells & tastes great..! Prepared to perfection..!
Ask for a pair of chop sticks & keep hogging the food..! The main course quantity serves more than two & so is worth all your money if you choose to go in a group.
The dessert menu is really tasty too, ask for death By Chocolate & I bet you will keep coming back..;-)
The turn off is the service, which is a bit too sloppy or slow, you will need to keep asking them to serve you, They have very few pair of chopsticks in stock & so if you want one, make sure you let them know in advance..!
Free Food, Good Food
When I was working in Fort I have been here twice. Both times had free food here. Office parties and farewells. Talking about food, it was a great experience. Pot rice is my personal favourite. The desserts were heavenly.
Never felt like working after heavy lunch at 5 Spice. Great place to be.
DISREGARD TOWARDS CUSTOMER
My family and i have been visiting 5spice,fort since the time 5spice wasn't even that popular. My last visit with my family was an absolute disappointment.
Since we had a waiting of 45 mins,We kept a death by chocolate cake and a couple of cheesecakes on reserve.when we asked for our desert, they refused to serve us the cheesecakes inspite of them being available, stating that they were reserved for someone else, that too ,for someone who came to dine long after we were seated.
I think this not only shows a disregard towards customer satisfaction but also a non apologetic attitude as we were not provided with any sort of option either.
Not so good anymore
I'm used to be a big fan of 5 Spice. So it was a huge disappointment for me when me & my friends went there yesterday. All 3 of us had to restrict ourselves to the veg menu as we are observing a fast. We ordered the Veg Wantons & the Mongolian Veg Pot Rice. The Veg Wantons seemed stale like they were in the freezer for a while. There was no sign of vegetables in the Wanton. Just a few pieces floating in the watery broth . The pot rice was strictly OK. The only good thing about the meal were the desserts.
What a dismay!
I feel serving STALE food speaks volumes of a restaurant, we called for mandarin noodles and it was spoiled, it smelled off and the texture was not right and on top of it the waiter doesn't bother apologizing but gives us the most ridiculous reason. Since the place is known for its desserts I was pretty confident nothing would go wrong there but to my disappointment there was a hair in my chocolate mud cake. I WOULDN'T recommend this place as the quality of the food is a disaster!
I was a big fan of 5spice however i have had very bad experience the last 3 times i visited. I love having the Thai green curry here and as its a family fav i called for it home and the cook had managed to send me a really watery gravy that was dark green in colour. Thai curry is usually lighter green and of a little thicker consistency. i had to send the curry back. this was from the Malad restaurant. today i visited the bandra one and was very disappointed with the service and the quality of food! the food did not come for an hour and when the Thai curry arrived it tasted like water and spice. The waiter did not have an apologetic attitude he took the gravy and got another one after 30mins leaving our rice cold and appetite up for a toss! this has been the worst and an embarrassing experience for me as i specially took some guests to visit the restaurant...i don't recommend 5spice to anyone as the quality and service has gone down the drain!
I had been looking forward to eating here but was sorely disappointed, the service was terrible, so many items were unavailable, the waiters were clueless and just chatted amongst themselves, its took them half an hour to just get us our mineral water, each dish came at half hour intervals, the kids kept screaming because there was never enough food on the table, we were a large group but thats no excuse they should have been more organised, the water we had ordered in the middle of the meal came after we had finished when we asked them to take it back because we didn't want it anymore they were offended!! We also returned a dessert because its came so late everyone had had enough and just wanted to leave, the actual food we had was nice but the service and the attitude of the staff so awful...wouldn't go here again and wouldn't recommend. Not very VFM for money either, portions not that large...basically dismal.
Worth every buck spent!
Most people tend to rate restaurants based solely on their price, not considering the worth with respect to quantity or taste. 5 Spice might be a little on the expensive side with respect to an average salaried person, but the quantity they serve, especially in the Main Course Rice/Noodles, is MORE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE I HAVE BEEN!
And it is this unique quality that has made this food joint a favourite for all types of people - College Youth, Families, Businessmen etc.
But like all places famous, there is a waiting almost every night and weekday waiting times can often top an hour! The Apple Chicken and Crispy Chicken are god options to kickstart your meal, followed by Dragon Chicken or any other Gravy on a "Hot Wok". Make sure you try the Burnt Chilli Rice or the Mongolian Pot Rice if you want a Rice-n-Gravy Combination. The Lamp Peppery Noodles also have a unique flavour to it. Finally in deserts the "Mission Impossible" is an ABSOLUTE MUST for desert lovers. Huge portions add to its exquisite presentation.
Good... but not like before!
When I used to stay in the vicinity (which was years back), 5 Spice used to be a hot favourite for Chinese food, considering the vast menu, finger licking food and VFM prices.. Sadly, things seem to have changed over the years. Though the portions are good, I wouldn't still call it VFM. And of course, the food brings about mixed reactions - Sometimes good, sometimes sad and sometimes really bad!
I've been there twice in the last 25 days and my experience both the times hasn't been totally satisfying. The Thai pot rice was just not up to the mark. However, just like mentioned in the previous review, the soups and starters were good. The main course was just about average.
Hoping for better results from 5 Spice, if I happen to be there again- 3.5 stars as of now!
Love the deserts here its Amazing!!!!
Food is a mix bag ... Starters and soup are good and very unique.
The main course though was not to my liking ( Not a very hardcore traditional chinese fan)
Though my friends liked it much .
Is a worth coming place for desserts for sure if not the food :P
I love this place. I have been a fan of 5 spice since I moved into Mumbai 6 years ago. And the quality of the food hasn't changed at all. I go there for almost all the occasions and also for usual dining with friends or family. It just never gets boring! I have tried a lot of other chinese restaurants in Mumbai but 5 spice's food surpasses them all. Firstly it is the quantity. Almost three people can easily eat from one bowl of noodles. The texture of the noodles is silky and soft which I just don't find at any other restaurant. They have a lot of great variety of noodles besides the usual hakka noodles. My favourite is teriyaki and pot noodles. The chicken starters and dishes are yummm. Can't really choose which one is the best. Mocktails are nicely served with fresh flavours. And ohhh the desserts are to die for. Rocky road, mission impossible, choco flakes gateau and death by choc are my favourites! I have even ordered the choco flakes gateau and death by choc cake for my bday and I loved the quality of chocolate in it!
Most people say the restaurant is tad on the expensive side but for the quantity they give, I think it is moderately priced. The customer service is good as well.
The only hitch is the seating. They can do with more space. I don't know how the bandra one is.
I have tried a lot of new dishes at 5 spice and nothing has ever disappointed me. Definitely worth going!
The Best Chinese in town by far!! Would recommend it for it's amazing service to the food which is nothing short of delicious! The portions are humungus and I eternally end up carrying food home irrespective of the number of people I am out with ;) only weak point is the space constraint but the bandra one is comparatively more spacious!all in all a wonderful place and do try death by choco!!
Oh-ugh horrible food
I, personally have been visiting this place regularly during my tenure when I used to work on Perin Nariman Street. Today, I took this opportunity, as we were visiting town, to take my family to 5 Spice and before visiting the place, I gave them so much gyan of the food, the quality, the quantity and above all the dessert. To our surprise and my disappointment, right from the word go, it was like a nightmare, the manchow soup was watery, the crispy chicken was soft and soggy, the prawns cold and stale, etc. I do not think I need to say any further. It was an utter disappointment for all of us.
We would not visit this place again and we would definitely tell all our friends about our experience and also caution them on visiting this restaurant.
Last nite was v disappointing wen my friends and myself went to 5 spice @ Fort for dinner.
The Crispy potatoes were not CRISPY at all..since the last 5 vists I've been drawing their attention but I don't see any changes.
Food was served cold as it was kept on the counter for a long time.
The only thing that covered up for such a WONDERFUL DINNER.....was ofcourse desserts. ( No issues with desserts )
The quality of food and service has definately gone down after the Andheri Branch has opened up and left the Fort Branch to suffer.
HORRIBLE JUST HORRIBLE...
Worst experience at 5 Spice (Fort) Ever.. Im done with this place never ever going back here... Been here more then 35times now BUT Out of my last 4 visits only one was OKAY.. Last nite they just %^%%^ It up... Totally messed up our dinner...
Called for Crispy Potato, But got Greasy potatoes instead..
Food was kept on there service table for 10-15 mins but was not being served for God knows what reason...
When we requested the waiter to warm it up again since he was serving cold food, makes a dirty face walks off.. comes back & instead of serving food he's just throwing it into the plate,.. What the %%^&^* is wrong with these people...
The owners are too busy expanding but i bet they will soon start shutting down branches.. Coz its just not what it was 2-3 years ago...
IM NEVER GOING BACK TO 5 SPICE @ FORT....
I don wanna rate it but since i have to i'll give 1 star just for Desserts..
Changing for worse
Ahh 5 spice!!How i miss the taste that this place's food could once upon a time boast of..This was one place i just needed an excuse to go to.But alas!!The last half dozen times i have been here has consistently disappointed me.The service and ambience are still considerably alright but their main usp, their yummy food, seems to have been lost...On a good note, if u visit this place i wud still recommend mission impossible.
Great place for Desserts!
We all couple friends went to 5 Spice (behind RBI - Fort) for dinner. Food was awesome, great, value for money. The quantity of the food as compared to the high dish price is justificable as the quantity is very good enough. Desserts (Rock Island and Mission Impossible) were the best thing on the menu. We ordered it the 1st as soon as got the table. Good chinese food, not too spice, not too oily, just perfect. Infact you don't need to add any other chinese sause to it.
Not recommended for single or couple (2 person) as the quantity of the food is very heavy and you will land up doing parcels.
Try to go early on weekends and holidays as waiting is very killing. (we had to wait 40 mins)
1 TIP/ADVICE: While you are waiting get hold of the menu card, decide you food menu and give order with sequence to be brough to your table, hence as soon as u get your table, ur dishes will be served and no crying of bad / late service! This you can try at most of the Restaurants!
We were 9 adults and 3 child and we ordered 4 by 8 soup, 3 starters, 2 main course (rice dish) 1 noodles and then 2 Rock Island (this was ordered 1st) bill was 2550/-
PAST - EXCELLENT, PRESENT - OKAY..
5 Spice: A place where we all friends use to land up so often for dinner, BUT lately somethings gone wrong with the service, Its just not the same 5 Spice we use to visit upto Jan 2010,
My last 2 visits were so disappointing, I completely made a fool out of my-self by praising it to my Guest and then getting disappointed by the food quality & service at the time of Arrival.
I guess the 2 partners who run it are too busy looking after the Andheri branch & have just forgotten about the FORT Branch.
If they don't look up into this soon it mite just shut down.
5 spice is the place if u want to have some good chinese....when we reached there we had to wait for sumtime but the wait was worth it all...we ordered Paneer with chilly garlic gravy, manchurian, thai pot rice, korean fried rice, '5 spice' noodles nd amercan chopsuey....nd the portions were too loaded nd totally lip smacking....had some good chinese after a long time...nd then came what we had been waiting for...the "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE"....it was really mission impossible....made up of only chocolate chocolate chocoalte nd chocolate....a thing to hv for all chocolate freaks....ndthen came another dessert...Rocky Roads even that too was great but nothing as good as MI....overall really liked it and not too expensive too...!!!!
Horrible experience .... we were actually fooled
this used to be my fav place .... whenever we thought about Chinese or desserts ... 5 spice was the first thing that came to our minds ... but now i guess we will think twice before entering this place .... this place is slowly but surely lossings its edge ... the food has not been upto the mark in my last few visits .... i gues they have lost there chef or some other major issue ... even the desserts are no longer what they used to be .... but icing on the cake was my last visit when i ordered my fav chicken lemon grass soup ..... much to my surprise some thing complete weired came to my table .... it tasted nothing like the usual .... i called the manager and told him about it .... at first he refused to accept that it was not lemon grass ... but then i made him taste it ... post which he agreed that it was not perfect ..... i told him to make one for me ... to which he tried to sell me some other options ... which was stupid because i wanted to have lemon grass soup .... he went back to the kitchen and came back after 5 min to inform that they did not have the grass .... wonder how they made the first lemon grass soup .....
Food is excellent, the portion is huge & the food is tasty.
Its light on the wallet. Which means 4-5 person can eat for approximate 1200/- rupees.
After lunch or dinner one must try Death By Chocolate its to die for.
DO NOT GO ALONE TO THIS RESTAURANT AS ONE CANNOT EAT THE WHOLE THE PORTION.
The Chinese food is excellent & the portion is absolutely huge.
The price is a bit high but no complaints about the quality & quantity.
The staff is also very fine and the waiter had suggested some veg dishes as we r vegeterains.
We had celebrated my wife's b'day and the Toblorone Cake was absolutely mind blowing.
I would strongly recommend to visit atleast 1 time for Chinese Food Lovers.
if u r having a group of 5-6 People then it is advisable to visit.Pls do not visit if u r singl bcoz the quantity of food will drive u mad.
And on weekends try to go early as u will have to wait ia a long queue for ur turn.
Real good chinese
Loved the food at this place...tasty with a good choice in menu. tucked away in an obscure place, this restaurant can surprise you with tasty food and humongous portions. It may look pricy, but the huge portions and awesome taste makes it a total paisa vasool. a definite must try for all lovers of chinese food...just be careful not to order too much.
Chinese food at its best
Great food, amazingly huge portions.... lovely starters and mind blowing desserts. The Decor is sober and authentic. Undoubtedly a must visit [my fav. chinese joint].
If its only women going its 1 portion to 3 of you'll [if not 4].. so go easy while ordering [if you have men along, order like mads they'll manage to finish]
The only thing that can leave you frustrated are the queues outside. Specially, if its a lunch between work and u r crunched on time reach thr by 12.30 or change the venue.
Original unburnt chinese here...
Being at 5 spice means having pure Chinese food..
Check out variety of menu but I personally would suggest Garlic burnt noodles which I loved the most...mostly crowded during lunch hours as its regular eating out spot preferred by Nariman Point / Fort goers...prices little high but definitely good to try place :)
Something is VERY WRONG...
I loved this place-I truly did..not only myself-but my whole family loved this place. Belonging to a typical middle class family who steps inside a 5 star restaurant only on special occasions (we celebrated our parents' 25th anniversary at The Taj) and who spend 1 entire day at big bajaar monthly fighting tooth and nail to save 2 and 3 rupees on daal and rice (aah bliss :D)-u can imagine wat a blessing we found dis place to be-HUUUUUUUUUGE Portions and AMAZING food-4 people wolfing down like crazies (we are a family of eaters, babies r born in our family with spoon and fork for company) and the bill yet never crossing 700-800 bucks, where else can such a place be found!
or so we thought..
i visited this place with my mom nd sis on last weekend -15th aug to be precise-nd we thought, chalo lets enjoy our independence with a feast and we hadnt been here in almost 6-7 months.
we ordered for my favorite iteme-kung pao paneer, crispy corn water chestnuts and steamed wantons as starters and spice lime noodles, thai pot noodles as main course.
now once upon a time, i could have easily told u that 3 people wont be able to have the main course after 3 starters-the portions used to be that big! but apparently not any more-we know this coz i deliberately over ordered so that we could finish the starters and get the main course doggie parcelled (dad was not feeling well and was at home so we wanted to take this for him)-but but but..as i said, apparently the portions are reduced now! I am not saying its a drastic reduction, it was still filling-but it has definitely reduced-i can excuse this because of recession, no problems there.
What i do have a problem is with the quality of food nowadays. the paneer and water chestnut starters were very good as usual, but de wantons were different-not ghastly different, but different and not in a good way. I felt they were drier than before and somehow I felt they were not upto the mark.
anyway we finished the starters and moved on to main course, we thought we would eat about 1/4th and get the rest parcelled-but the main course was downright bad! The thai pot noodles had toooooooooooo much garlic in there (did they think we needed to fend off vampires at our table or wot??) the garlic was actually overpowering everything else-and I hate garlic, so i did not touch it after one bite.
The spic lime noodles had steamed noodles and spice alright, but it still felt bland. I dont kno how this can be managed-imagine having a bit of a dish which feels like chilli at first nd in 2 seconds u r searching for some sauce to make it come alive, its crazy! i wanted spiced noodles, i dont kno wat i got! nd it had dese huge chunks of vegatable, which were all half cooked. I dont know if that is how its supposed to be, but I did not like it at all.
and the major point-it was just TOOOOOOOOOOOO OILY..the noodles were literally FLOATING IN OIL! we had to strain the vegetables from the oil, dab them with tissue papers and then eat them! My mom almost had a heart atatck looking at them!
finally we decided not to parcel anything for dad (nd make him even more ill!) nd just left the food..
to ward off de bad taste, I took a blueberry cheesecake and mudcake-wich were both superlative as always. Thats why I gave it 3 stars-2 stars just for the desserts and only 1 for the rest of the food.
I dont know if I am the only one feeling this huge rush of disappointment, but really I am very very sad that I will not think of going back here in a very long time-unless someone convinces me with a good review that they have rectified their mistakes..heck i loved this place :(
being new to mumbai, this place had been recommended to me by a lot of friends so we ended up there, hoping to be stuffed with yum chinese!! and voila, bulls eye!!
the place is very busy but we were in luck and got a table immediately (that too on a sunday) we had some chicken with crispy spinach for the starters, of which i cud not have enuff. but the soup was just okie. for the maincourse we picked up two dishes but the staff was helpful enuff and suggested that we have only one, and yes he was right. just one dish was sufficient and we cud not finish the rice. the rice was cooked to perfection and the chicken yum!! for dessert we asked for death by chocolate, which was already finished and the mission impossible we had was superb and HUGE. we were grateful to the waiter on whose advice we had just one.
on another occasion we had ordered a home delivery for a get together at home. well, though the starters were still nice, but i must say the maincourse (peking rice) was a dissapointment. may be tis the difference b/w dine in and home delivery. but m wiser not to order from home again. bt will definitely dine there and recommend it to all.
Yummy chinese food!!!
We usually go here in a group of about 4 to 6 and the food really rocks!! They have a good variety of soups and starters but my all time fav is the Crab meat soup and the yummy Golden fried prawns, which come in like 6 big prawns with some red sauce which they keep on the table but I prefer it without the sauce. The best option here is to order Pot rice- which is like semi curried rice mixed with chicken, prawns, broccoli, mushrooms, bamboo shoots n everything. order a chicken side dish with it, i usually prefer the chicken in oyster sauce and you are done....the food just tastes amazing!!! we usually relish the food so much that we never have enough space left for the delicious looking desserts here!! but next time i go here den will def try d desserts...
Good food, bad service
Went there on a Thursday night thinking that it would be less crowded than on weekend. While we got a place fast enough, the person taking order was rude, inconsiderate and impatient.
The food was fabulous (as usual) and the mongolian pot rice and burnt chilly chicken were superb. Finally got to eat Mission Impossible and took it home since it was ginormous!
Food with 2 beers came to less than 700 which was great. However, the service has put me off and we grabbed the take-out menu on our way out.
Enter the Dragon!
It serves the best Chinese food at amazing prices and humongous portions :)))))))))))
The desserts too are wow!! The best thing to eat is Death-by-chocolate. Please reserve it beforehand cause it will vanish in no time.
I just love this place.
A 4 course meal for two will not be more than 700 bucks.
Love affair gone wrong
I am never going back to the Fort outlet of 5Spiceagain!!!
I began my love affair with 5Spice almost 5 years ago when i was in college. I loved everythiong about the place...the awesome food, the delicious desserts, the warm service, the enormous portions the the reasonable price. But after college my 5Spice habit become tough coz i didn't come to south bombay that often anymore.
When the outlet in bandra open i was probably the happiest person in the world. It felt even better than the one i remembered in fort! All my friends and family are on the verge of disowning me coz everytime we decide to eat out i have just one suggestion...5Spice.
Two weeks ago i went to the fort outlet (much to the dismay of my family accompanying me) and was horrified at how bad the food was! It was terrible quality, the service was terrible (they brought us the wrong order TWICE!!)...there wasn't even tissue on the table! I am super disappointed! I AM NEVER GOING TO 5spice at FORT AGAIN!!!
dessert dessert dessert
well everyone loves the food at 5 spice, but i have to recommend the dessert. It's a place that everyone i kno goes to, when they have that little space just enough to fill with some gooey chocolate.
If I am dining here itself, I prefer to skip the drinks and soups completely and then gorge on the Death by Chocolate, the Rocky Road and the Strawberry Cheescake. Absolutely divine :)
I am yet to find a food (apart from the fried wantons) from the starter menu at Five Spice that doesn't go gloopy on me by the time it reaches my doorstep.
When I'm at the restuarant I can't resist but order the crispy chicken but I find that it's a big soggy ball of cornflour and meat when I order in. I ordered the Apple Chicken Lollipops yesterday (Rs 145) that were just about edible when they arrived and unbearably chewy on the reheat for the evening meal. Ditto for the Crispy Ginger Chicken (Rs 145) and a host of other items. Oh and btw, has anyone noticed how Five Spice has upped the prices by Rs 10 on all starters (don't even get me started on the main course). The compromise I suppose, are the ever always GIGANTIC portions.
Suggestions? Thinner strips of chicken, thinner cornflour batter and foil containers! The biggest problem has got to be the greenhouse effect the plastic containers have on food which isn't a problem when it comes to the Chicken Hakka noodles (Rs 130), as the moisture keeps them from drying out.
However when it comes to the starters, the foil baggies they serve the fried wantons is perfect. There's very little moisture retention and the food stays warm too.
Please if there's anyone from the management on this site, reconsider your packing options.
To Finish Their Food..
The portionss are HUGE man!!!
This place means Chinese Food to me..
Its a Gem of a place..
The quality of food is Fantastic..
The Rice(burnt chilly/pot rice) and Gravy(thai curry/schezwan)are My Favss..
The Death By Choc and Mission Impossible Are "THE DESSERTS"..
The service is nice(can be lil' slow at times)..
Take more friendss along when going...
To accomplish the Mission(of finishin food)..
haa haa ..
Had heard a lot.... so decided to drop in after drinks... Wfy kiddo an me... Wanted some thing simple on a fri night...ordered Veg Yan Mein... the staff was good enough to suggest canceling the accompanying gravy order... and thankfully so.... dautr freaked out on the plain part of the noodles and though we wer streaming tears by the end of the truly spicee dish it was fun ... The stafff was providing water refills without even asking 4 it...and i could see it on a few other tables also!!! so i guesss spice is a character of the place!!..Prepn *****, Service******, Ambiance****.. Like all others say ...go with a good apetite and go for the variety...
A restaurant we go when we are very hungry..Their portions are huge, very VFM.... And I specifically go for the desserts.....the death-by-chocolate is to die for!!!!
We were four of us and even then we couldn't complete the dessert..One of the best I have tasted.....
Also recommended is the Mongolian Pot Rice..
They dont have a reservation system on weekends, its first come- first serve, but I think the wait is worth... No wonder the frequent trips I have made to this reataurant...
Quantity great and quality greatest!!!
A Chinese foodie like me is on the top of heaven when
service, ambience and food play a top noth role...
5 spice was introduced to my by my friend..She took me to treat there...We tried prawns starters and rice and chicken...The dessert display was so tempting that i could have begged, borrowed and stole "more appetite" if i could..My stomach was full after gorging on the generous portions that " mera dessert ka khwab khwab hi rah gaya"...the names are also awesome..death by chocolate as one sinful looking chocolate cake is named which i have no doubt...I think that would be the only sin that would transform you to heaven...
My advice..a minimum of 3 people is advised..to optimally utilise your food and financial resources...A must go for Chinese food lovers...
On the flop side would be going early....maybe as early as 7:30 to ensure a table even on a week night...or you will have to wait for your table, though the experience is worth the wait...
Five Spice is Everything nice!
I personally feel that a large part of the dining experience is the waiters. After all, the waiter is really the interactive face presented to you so if your waiter is lousy, no amount of good food will make up for this!
Which is why, I feel that Five Spice offers a great dining experience. A clean and neat eatery, tucked away in a very crowded and chaotic part of Mumbai in the day, it becomes a welcome haven after office hours.
We went early in the evening because my daughter who is a regular warned us that it gets crowded pretty fast. Actually it is not very hard to fill up the space as it is very small. But small is beautiful and I can fit into a small space so............ I don't really mind.
We had lots of parking space available since the whole street had emptied out . In any case, there is valet parking available for all those who can't manage a parking spot right outside the restaurant.
We were given our choice of seating since we were almost the first diners. We went into the air conditioned section which was different from the outside only in terms of temperature. Perhaps it was because the place was empty that the air conditioning was so effective that we chose to eat outside rather than have our teeth chattering in tandem with our chop sticks!
Seated in a comfortable spot, we settled down to choosing our food. Since my daughter was familiar with the menu, we left it to her. She chose Butter Garlic prawns (Rs. 200) for starters , a Chicken Moon Fan rice ( Rs.150) and Hunan Fish (Rs.210).
Of course the waiter was not only helpful but also knowledgeable in terms of portions, taste and suggestions of complementing dishes and flavours.
The starters came quickly while the prawns were still hot and crispy - just right infact. Juicy inside with the subtle flavourings of garlic, pepper and butter enhancing the natural taste of prawn.
The simply aromatic Rice giving off the distinctive whiff of Star Anise came in a hot clay pot . We lifted off the top and bit into succulent lightly batter fried pieces of chicken combined with shitake mushrooms. It is the star anise which differentiates this rice from the normal "Flied Lice" available in all Chinese restaurants. Also according to the waiter who recommended this dish over Fortune Rice, it was dry and would go better with the gravied fish.
While my daughter was thrilled with the Hunan Fish since it was her preference, I would have preferred a Soy based sauce but I am not complaining about the fish which was served in a fish shaped chafing dish.
And the last course was the main reason for our being there - the Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream (Rs. 100) According to my daughter this was the raison d'etre of this restaurant and sure enough by the time we left, we found people pre-ordering this delicacy as the restaurant tends to run out of it! Incidentally this One dessert was enough for the three of us to share though I did pig out by ordering a Chocolate Mousse Cake (Rs90). This chocolate chip covered mousse was insipidly disappointing particularly eaten alongside the sinfully rich chocolate brownie.
The servings were large - so large that the three of us couldn't finish what we had ordered so we doggy bagged it for lunch. Actually it would have been better if we had taken one more person along as it would have been just right.
So along with three aerated drinks and a bottle of Aqua vita, this became a wonderfully affordable gem for all of a princely sum of Rs.870!
Five Stars then for Five Spice which according to me scores 10/10 for all the ingredients that make for a happy meal
Location and ambience - easily accessible, simple and clean
Waiters and general staff - helpful, pleasant , knowledgeable and very efficient.
Variety and Taste - Great food and choice
PRICE - All the better to eat more!
Icing on the cake : Five Spice does Free Home Deliveries so you can literally have your cake and eat it too. Of course minimum order is Rs.500 but for two people that will easily amount to that much
Final verdict - GO FIVE SPICE
Amazing Chinese - Xi Xi
amazing chinese food. 5 spice chicken noodles are very delicious. the quantity is king size. the desserts are to die for - Death By Chocolate - rocks!! each taste is like heaven (died and gone to heaven) yummmmmmm!!! (drooling as i write this). I've been there 3 times in the last 3 months and its always been as good. This is the only place that has an eggless menu! Not even Golden Dragon at the Taj can provide this!! This is wayyyy better because of that! You have chinese dressed and chinese looking hostesses that guide you to your table - you feel like the place is authentic! The peach ice-tea is amazing as well!! Love this place.
Shantung Noodles Stunk Stale!
I moved into my new office in Kala Ghoda on Friday and thought of giving 5 spice a shot again. A few months ago, I used to work in Nariman Point and used to love the food. We ordered Burnt Chilly Rice, Black Bean Chilly Chicken and Veg Shantung Noodles. Ordering the food took a good half n hour coz no one would answer the phone. We got the food an hour after we had placed the order. Mind you, we are only 4 blocks away from the restaurant. When we got the food, the Shantung Noodles were clearly stale. We called the restaurant back to tell them that and the restaurant manager wouldn't get on the line. When we threatened them we will come to the restaurant and make a scene thats when he finally came on line. We tried to tell him that the noodles are stale and he ought to give us a replacement. He just wouldn't agree. He said they smell that way naturally. We tried to tell him that we aren't fools not to be able to tell the difference but he just wouldn't agree. Finally a colleague really lost his temper and threatened to bring the food and feed it to the manager. Thats when he agreed to replace it. My colleagues were skeptical that the restaurant might mess around with the food and so decided to just go the restaurant. When my colleague got to the restaurant he noticed that one phone off the hook. He actually took a video - here's the clip. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvHdTaJKXsQ All in all, bad customer service. Unfortunate to note that many restaurants in Mumbai lose out coz of bad customer service. I dont understand how they can afford to lose out valuable customers in such a competitive environment. Another example of 'the owner has no idea how the restaurant is operating and treating its guests" I had one bad experience here out of the 10 times I have ordered here. But this one experience told me a lot about their customer service. How can u possibly argue with your guest?!!!
Inconsistent, but value of money!
I have been here a couple of times before and I really find the food very inconsistent! Luckily for the range of inconsistency is on the higher side... it manages stays above average and of course the portions totally make up for it.
A couple of days back, we decided to order from 5 Spice, a Burnt Chilly Rice (Non-Veg) and a Thai Green Curry (Chicken), firstly we were shocked to see the quantity. The Burnt Chilly Rice was just outstanding- highly recommended dish! The Thai Green Curry was decent too- but it could have been a lil thicker - it was too watery for my liking. The food was meant for 2 people but there was no way we could polish that kind of quantity. We roped-in another Maasahari (Hard Core Non-Vegetarian) to help us with the food, at the end of it 3 of us were totally stuffed! We ordered for the same food the next day with only one exception, the Burnt Chilly Rice was Vegetarian this time. It obviously didn't taste as good and the Thai Green curry got even more watery, it tasted alright though.
They deliver 12-3 pm: lunch, 7 -11.30 pm: dinner
They shut after the lunch hours and reopen at 7 pm. Home delivery is open till about 11.30 p.m. Don't know if its on till later as that only as late as I've called.
About the food....some of their food is terrific and some suck. To add to the list of good stuff, try burnt chilly lamb gravy, fortune rice (any meat), pot rice (any meat), chicken star anise. Its not a place to experiment with the menu if you don't already have a recommendation that you can trust.
12 to 3 SPICE ONLY
this place has great food but they only deliver from 12 to 3 - which really sucks!!!! and in order to find that out i had to call 3 different numbers and the last person told me that delivery is closed... very disappointed ... great food but wish they were open for home delivery for a longer time!!!!!!!!!!
The food here rocks
I totally disagee with the other reviews. The food here is amazing. The only advice is go with a group as the quantaties are huge. The drinks menu is also quite well stocked. Things to try out on the first visit:
1. Imperial Lamb rice
2. Chicken Wong Rice
3. Chillie Oyster noodles
4. Tepan Sopan Noodles
P.S. Please reserve your dessert before you sit !!!
One thing about this place is that it has a very small A/C section !!!
Service needs improvement
I went to this place about 10 days ago. The place is located in a nondescript street with its signage in chinese characters. So make sure you check out the photos at this site before you head over, otherwise you wont be able to locate the place.
It was a Saturday evening, the place was brimming full with people. We had to wait about 20 minutes before we got our table. The waiter took forever to take the order and almost botched up the order, if we hadn't asked him to confirm what he had written down.
The appetizers were better than the forgettable main course. I was part of a big group, so it didn't matter much if the food tasted okayish. We had fun nevertheless.
Go there with a group. It's is not a place where you take your date out to.
Nothing-special-Chinese in Fort
5 Spice is tucked nicely in a very pleasant neighborhood to take a stroll in. The old Reserve Bank of India area is surrounded by wide cobblestone streets and plenty of trees. 5 Spice offers the usual Indo-Chinese fare and nothing really unique. Try the Crispy Vegetables as starters and Shantung Noodles (flat noodles) as a main course - not bad. The food tastes as expected and nothing really stands out. The one plus about this place is the crowd - mostly a young, hip, in crowd enjoying drinks along with their spicy noodles.
If you're in this area and are craving Chinese, take advantage of the locale and the crowd - but the food is nothing to write home about.
