Must visit when in Hill Road.

One of the oldest bakeries in Bandra. And really good old school desserts which are not that easy to find amidst all the cupcakes and cheesecakes these days. The place has very nice, calm and quiet feel to it. You can go in the evening or in the early afternoon to enjoy a nice quite dessert. The chicken roti is a must try. So is the focaccia bread.

Good Food at reasonable price.

You cannot stand here for too long and eat as there is no place to stand considering the queue formed to get the orders! Very reasonable. One of the oldest food stalls. Must try their chicken roti!

Love this place

The best bakery in bandra according to me. Everything is so delicious. The rates are amazing. The quantity and quality are at their best. Try their chicken rolls. Its a must try place for non-vegetarians.

Goodness!!

This small little cozy eatery located on Hill road is a sweets lovers fantasy land. They have a wide range of pasteries and cakes to choose from which are yumminess personified. And the cherry on the cake is it doesn't burn a hole in your pocket too. Try out their savoury stuff too. Quite flavoursome. Just has a few chairs and a couch where you can sit and devour your foodstuff, so not much of a sit-in pace. More of a take-away joint.

Gem worth visiting, OFTEN

You don't know what you are missing if you have not been to American Express Bakery. The prices are so reasonable, I wondered if we are robbing them ! Ambiance is warm and friendly and leaving the best for last, the goodies are unbelieveably good. Foodies Heaven. There is not one outstanding dish I can recommend, they ALL meet that criteria. I buy a goodie per week on the way home from work on Friday. Heaven at the end of a tedious week. In days of coffee shops that serve substandard food at ridiculous prices, I commend their gourmet quality.

Everything but that lemon pie

Been to American Bakery on Hil road randomly in the morning. everything there was AWESOME..., the quiche, the chicken sandwich..., the chicken troute, everything..., The desserts were good too (considering the pricing) EXCEPT the lemon pie! i mean..., who puts in big huge slices of lemon (including the skin) in any dish for that matter...., complete turn off that was. After this rather tangy experience with lemon, we decided not to go for any more lemon flavored dishes. Another thing i liked was the water kept outside for anyone to drink. No hassles, no confusions.

Superb Choco Coffee cake

I stepped into AEB recently and was greeted with a delicious aroma of coffee. This just sets the mood for everything a bakery has on offer. I picked the hard toasts that work well as croutons in a salad as they are not made from milk bread and two thick slices of the chocolate coffee cake. Am not sure if this cake is a regular feature but it is divine. Moist and light with chocolate, walnuts, raisins and a hint of coffee. This is a must try.

Recent convert

Have been trying to find a good bakery in this side of town.. and its been a journey of hits and misses. Someone mentioned American Exp Bakery and we tried it out this weekend. Their mutton patties were sold much to my disappointment but chicken seekh rolls were yum and their croissants were soft and delish. Prices were fantastic. There is a notice stating prices will rise effective some date (Nov i think). Staff was friendly. Place is clean. Food is tasty. Totally paisa-vasool!

Value for Money!

The best thing i like abt this place is that its nt crowded unlike other bakeries. There's lot to choose from especially for non-vegeterians. I liked their cream roll and tart. Staff is also pretty good and friendly. A good place to visit frequently.

Best Bran Muffins

The bran muffins here (Rs 18/- only) are great - the best I have had in Mumbai. Also - the fresh stock comes around 5pm daily - so these are best eaten in the evening !

In fact, other fresh products also come at this time - so it is absolutely worth it to go here around 6pm.

DELICIOUS

I arrived with my coworkers over 5 months ago looking to indulge in these amazing sandwiches raved about on burrp. I always get my hopes up, especially when a restaurant has the admirable reviews. Well, I was not disappointed. So, yes I loved it. I loved the sandwiches, loved the mousse. One of the best I have ever tasted. Even the cookies I took home were great-fresh and delicious. Pastries looked great and nice variety. Prices are VERY reasonable, had to stop and ask if they make a profit !All my co-owers had great food too.Yum, YUM, have been back, often, no very often since my first visit!

No eggless stuff

This is a small modest shop with muffins, pastries and rolls. They looked yummy and tasted great too, as my friend testified. Unfortunately i couldnt taste anything. The manager told me they have absolutely no eggless variants. Come on, even the biggest delis and bake shops keep eggless stuff these days- for a reason. This bakery sure lags behind.

Best Pastry Place!

This place is amazing! I’m a dessert lover and only the best will do for me and this place has it. The chocolate mousse cake is out of this world. The Viennese Torte, Hungarian coffee cake and Adam’s eggless cake are also awesome and among my favorites. The pastries are on par if not better than at any 5 star bakery and the prices very reasonable. The savory goods like sandwiches and quiche are also excellent. Give it a try - you will not be disappointed. I drive across town just to get stuff from here.

VFM!!!

It lacks the glitterati and marketing gimmicks of the new age success stories, but the age-old saying is ‘proof of the pudding is in eating’. The products have not mellowed or quality changed with age, from the ever-favorite biscotti / the plum pudding to newer one like oat meal crackers remind you of days when baking was an art not a craft. You don’t have to wait for a picnic the ‘Garlic Roast Chicken Sandwich’ and the ‘Mutton Roast Sandwich’ can make any occasion memorable. The list goes on… I only wish there were more outlets around …

Quality products

Exceeding the customer's expectation is a phrase that I hear often in the
service industry, but I feel The American Express Bakery truly takes this policy to heart. Unpretentious and understated in their approach to providing truly a gourmet experience. Realized when I ate at Pritvi recently that some sandwiches etc are from here but at much higher prices, so why not go to the source ??!!

I love their chicken pattis and I agree with one of the reviewer's-their food is very addictive. Definitely on par with places like Theobroma as far as the pastries, brownies go. Better than any other place for their bread. Service and prices -par excellence !

A foodies opinion-Best in Mumbai !

Having lived abroad for almost 30years I have had my share of "gourmet taste" and quality chocolate products (don't mean to sound pompous). The chocolate mousse, brownies and viennese torte at the American Express Bakery are to die for. Need I mention the biscotti, banana bread, health food stuff, the bread.....and I can go on. It rivals the best in the US and India in quality but at very affordable prices. I am amazed that we in Mumbai do not take pride in places like this-high quality AND affordable prices unlike many of the so called 5 star places.

Being a foodie I make it my life's agenda to find the best. I was in 7th heaven when I moved to India and found this bakery less than a mile from where I lived. I am addicted to their "Plum cake. I started taking it to the US for friends as the American version of this is called fruit cake and it is awful. Now I have turned my friends into addicts and all they want when I visit is American Express Bakery plum cake !! Wish I could get an exclusive to sell in the US as I would make a killing.

Their sandwiches are very EXOTIC and original in taste. The spicy chicken is incredibly good-if you have not tried it-GO NOW ! I was disappointed when they stopped their creme brulee but they said there was not too much of a market for it. However, I must say they have new goodies all the time.

What I am amazed at is the number of products they churn out keeping to the high standard in quality. It tells you a lot about the family and the pride they take in their legacy. Keep up the great job !

Small pleasures of life

Theobroma, is the only bakery/patisserie I had heard of before moving to Mumbai. My love for it could run into pages, but I’m not going to dwell on that here. My first two wonderful (in retrospect) years in Mumbai were spent in the posh area of Bandra West.

Once walking on Hill Road, which doesn’t posses any posh-ness that one would associate with Bandra, I came across a modest looking place called ‘American Express’ Bakery. At first, was a little wary of entering this place as there is a laundry right door bearing the same name! The bakery is open in the evening and shuts at 8:30. Never been able to figure out if they are open mornings as well.

An ideal place for the health conscious, they have a wide range of breads & biscuits in the whole wheat variety. The USP of this place I would say is some fairly fancy stuff at very affordable rates.

A limited variety of tea-time cakes & pies are available. The Hungarian Coffee Cake is definitely worth savoring; very moist with just the right taste of coffee. The quiches are well-made with a fair choice for non-vegetarians as well (I’m veg. so can’t comment). The wraps are tasty, but usually soggy, hence avoidable.

The basil & sun-dried tomatoes loaf is worth a savor, and makes a good accompaniment with a salad. Or just heat in the oven and have it as is! The garlic bread with a whole wheat base, shaped like a loaf of French bread (du pain) with a lovely soft garlicky centre.

The blueberry cheesecake has a lovely fresh taste to it. Although, I’ve never tried the chocolate based delights, as that’s reserved for Theobroma (darn! I was not to mention the name) they all look delectable.

Owned by Goans, it’s a fun place to visit during Easter, X’Mas etc. Easter eggs, hot cross buns, marzipans, christmas cake, guava jelly, the list is endless.

On being asked why they called themselves Amercian Express, I was told it was because they catered to American ships that visited Bombay, and the service they rendered was speedy or express. The baking is done at Byculla, and the owner proudly added we’re a fine example of communal harmony; we’ve got Hindus, Muslims, Christians working under the same roof since we’ve been in operation (that’s nearly a century) and have had no problem till date. It helps if the owner is around; she's always glad to suggest something new, which once may miss.
