Delicious Konkani sea food fare

Apoorva was our favorite late night after work dinner place.. and that was good fun. Any sea food dish here is authentic malvani and yummy! Neer dosa, fish gassi, surmai tawa fry, crabs, tandoori pomfret.. The list is endless! :) the ambience isnt great but the quick service and sumptuous food makes up for it!

amazing place

If you want to visit a place where you want amazing food decently priced with good quantity it should be Apoorva. It stands for its price without giving you big holes in your pockets. Its a little difficult to locate, but once you know the place you will never wish to go anywhere else. The seafood is simply wonderful.I love the surmai fry and the Bombay duck crispy was well made. The other thing i like is the curry they serve along with fry fish...i simply relish it.Overall a very good place with excellent service...value for money!

Poor Service

Had been to Apoorva twice in the same week, for lunch and dinner. Both times the service was poor. The main course was served before the starters, the accompanying rice and appam were not served with the food. Had to wait for these to be served. Placing an order was also a trial. Inspite of pointing out a dish on the menu, the order taker had difficulty! kept on asking ridiculous questions. He asked one of the waiters to explain to him.

Worst place to be

This is the worst place to be!!. Reached home to see that there was a mistake of 400 Rs in our bill. Called the manager and he was extrmely rude. Instead of aplogizing, he staes that, what was the reason of going for a smoke outside the restaurant during having dinner..I mean come on.. you don't tell your customers what to do and above all you don't say that for the mistake you! made in the bill..there is no friken connection...(Believe me..I was as stunned as you are now). Nevertheless, I asked a friend working near by to collect the cash as discussed. Again the manager was rude over the phone. I told him to just hand over the cash and not to repeat the mistake in other bills. He states 'Kyon..(why)' hahaha what a nerd and rudeness is in their blood.
The food was pathetic and tasteless. Sloppy service too...
Do not go there even for free food!!!

Perfect Surmai Fry

Though the place is quite old, I visited this place recently for the first time.
The place is divided into two section, the lower level is non A/c.
We preferred to sit on the upper level in A/c.
The sittings are well arranged.
Without wasting time, we ordered for Surmai fry.
They serve a huge piece of Surmai, that is fresh, perfectly crispy, cooked with right amount of spices. It tastes awesome, just awesome. Even though it is deep fried, you can see a very little amount of oil on our plate. They serve Sumai Fry with small bowl of plain fish curry. It think it was a Mangalorian style fish curry.
After that we ordered for plain steamed rice which went very well with the curry.
We were really full by the time we finished the rice.
For dessert we ordered caramel custard, which was fine.

Clam sukkha!!!Droooooool....

I am still to come across a good seafood place that balances quality quantity and price as well as Apoorva does.Great seafood, really fresh and very consistent.I must eat the Clams Sukkha when I visit (I enjoy taking my friends on lil foodie trips and every single group that I've taken to Apoorva has tripped on the clams sukkha).Another great VFM dish is the white crab curry.Crabs as we all know can be expensive. But for Rs 180 you will get a great portion of white crabs in THE most divine Mangalorean curry.Wear you bib, crack open those claws, slurp on the juices, eat that sweet crab meat and then use a plateful of Neer dosas to clean all the left of curry (tons!).Fish fry is great too.I hope this place doesn't follow the likes of Mahesh Lunch home and Trisna...snooty touristy joints.

I happend to visit apoorva last week sinc i had some work in fort. I thought they must have shut shop. But was pleased to find find them standing tall. The food was great as always. Will come back again.

Aaah Apoorva!!!

This is one of the first three Manglorean Seafood restaurants in Mumbai, the other two being Mahesh Lunch Home and Trishna. Over time Mahesh has seemingly lost the plot and Trishna has gone on to become a fixture on the upmarket tourist circuit catering to tourists and expats who wants to eat `authentic’ Indian seafood. Mind you, Trishna is very good at what it does, but I digress.

Apoorva has remained the same for the last almost 20 years. The food has maintained the high standards over the years. Please do not go here to eat Chinese or Punjabi food. They don’t have much of a clue as far as this is concerned. Please do remember that most of the food is coconut based, so if you don’t like coconut and are forced to eat the other cuisines, you are in trouble. The Tandoori Crab and Tandoori Pomfret are perhaps the only exceptions.

To start have a Prawn Koliwada [battered and deep fried] or even a Fish Hydrabadi Tikka [boneless Pomfret or Rawas in a green spice rub cooked in a tandoor]. If you are in the mood have a Tandoori Crab. Eating this is hard work but well worth it.

For your main meal, you must have what they describe [and spell] as `Manglorean Ticklars’. These are all classics. You can have a “Sukka” [thick almost dry gravy] of Prawn, Shellfish, Squid, Chicken or Mutton. Or a “Ghassi” [much more liquid than a Sukka, almost sauce like consistency] with Prawn or Fish.

Instead of the usual Tandoori Roti please do try the Neer Dosa. They have something that they call Hyderabadi Daal. This is a Daal of unknown parentage but delicious.

The deep fried fish slices are unfortunately almost always overcooked and dried out. This is a problem with all restaurants in India, fish is always overcooked.

You could also have an Appam & Stew. Not the best but certainly worth having. The Kori Roti [Chicken Curry on a crisp Dosa] is another must-try.

All in all a good place to go to.

Hit or Miss

Went to Apoorva last night with a couple of friends after wanting to try something different from the usual seafood places we go; Mahesh, Trishna and Ankur. After all three of us finished our meal of prawns gassi, squid koliwada, Hyderabadi rawas and bombil fry, we all felt the same thing - this place is definitely on the same level as the other guys. The prices are a little more reasonable than the other seafood restaurants in the area, but there is a definite drop in quality.

We were happy with our rawas but the squid was dry and overcooked, the bombil fry was way too oily and the prawns gassi was nothing special at all.

I would rate Apoorva as an inexpensive lunch joint if you want something simple like a fish fry, but I would avoid it for a more complete dinner. Better off spending a few more rupees and going to the other guys.

Awesome!

The vegetable stew and the appams are divine. I also recommend the prawn gassi with rice. Everything else is all right- headspace is a bit limited in the air conditioned restaurant upstairs but the food makes up for everything!

Approved

I have been frequenting this restaurant for dinner since their food is finger-licking delicious.
Appams & Idi appams with chicken or vegetable stew or with prawns gassi the way i like it.
Crunchy Fried Bombil or Bombay Duck is their USP.
Wash it down with a chilled glass of SOL KADI.
Less Popular / Hyped & less expensive than Trishna....more along the lines of Mahesh lunch home.
Consistent good food & service.
one of my all time fav joints.
