Expensive & very average ...

Landed up at Penne by accident as we took a wrong turn and it was a choice better Mangii and Penne (bang opposite each other). The letter staff was more enthusiastic so we went there. After a play at Prithvi, these restaurants are just located at the right distance. There were only 2 other couples in the restaurant and the staff was quite attentive. We were not too hungry so we went straight for the main course – Pasta (something Vodka) for me and Gnocchi for my wife. Good serving and decent taste. Somehow a tad too expensive for the quality. Café Mangii is definitely better when it comes to food. It was a dry day so no wine and it made it even worse. A nicely done up restaurant with an open area sitting outside. They can do much more. Don’t think we will go back.

Great food, bit overpriced

Penne has an unassuming feel to it, tucked away in a Juhu bylane. They have been around for a while and are known for their authentic italian food. It is always a delight to visit this place. Saturday night was surprisingly quiet this time. Hardly 3-4 tables occupied. It just ended up feeling more private and exclusive. The outside seating is now covered to tackle the monsoons. They have enough 'silent' fans to keep you cool outside. The service was up to the mark and the pastas were simple awesome. The prices however, are a tad over the top. Probably higher than Novotel and Sun n Sand which are a stone's throw distance away and are 4 star hotels. But all in all, it a good place to eat and be seen. Keep up the good food guys.

Ultimate Italian Food

The ambiance was a lot better when the walls were Golden. The white interiors are just plain simple and boring !! What was Blue Foods thinking before changing??
Visited recently after a long time and ordered the Meat. We also called for a Load Pizza and Penne Vodka and chocolate Bomb. The Pizza was nice and crisp and the Penne Vodka would keep you asking for more and
more. The chocolate bombe was a perfectly chocolatey and gave the most perfect ending to a delicious meal ! Alcohol prices were
ridiculous which is why were not very surprised as to why the place was fairly
empty on a weekend evening. Looking forward to another good dining experience. I would highly recommended to people who want to Indulge in some really great food.

Water Fondue

Most disgusting fondue ever had. Even the service was bad. The waiters did not know much. Also, surprisingly, the live pasta counter did not have a chef.

cosy dine out even on weekends!!!

We had visited this place on a weekend evening when all the other places are loud and noisy. Penne was nice and calm. Though a little expensive the food was good. The service was nice. They also had good salads. It felt nice to sit out in the open with fine food and wine. Definitely visiting again.

Flawless

We dined there on Sunday 21st August. The Restaurant was pretty empty at 8 pm. Surprised that being an Italian restaurant, they don't provide complimentary bread.
We were 4 adults and 2 kids. 2 Pizzas, a canneloni and a fussili with pesto pasta along with garlic bread was ordered with 4 drinks .
Damages Rs.4000, which is not very high considering the ambience and quality of food. Just felt drinks are priced a little high. Keep up the good work, Penne!

Not so Authentic food at More than Authentic price

Visited on a Sunday on my Daughters recommendation, she had attended a Birthday Party. So we thought of having lunch there, Taste is ok, but definitely not authentic, Prices are crazy high, the portion sizes, well a little more than miniscule. An absolute dissapointment, Pasta was loaded with cream, way to rich, must have taken weeks to get out of my arteries, Makes TGI Friday look like absolute steal. The foods better in TGI, and costs much lesser. Definitely a NO-NO

So, so, so bad!

Had gone for lunch today and ordered "Risotto Alla Cacciatora", and it was really bad. It was supposed to have little veggies. But veggies was all i could see. It was really very dry and it looked like a quarter of a spoon grated cheese, accidentally had fallen into my my plate. I was so disappointed that I did not order for anything else.

Priced at Rs. 567/- it was the most ridiculously priced risotto ever.
You get much better risotto at Olio (Novotel), Stax (Hyatt Regency), Indigo Cafe (lokhandwala),etc. at around the same price. Even pop-tates serves better risotto at almost half the price.

Would Love if u love authentic Italian

Sonia Gandhi would love to be at this place. Truly authentic Italian food. Loved the garlic bread. Quite different from the garlic breads served across Mumbai restaurants where garlic is just put for namesake.

You should definitely go if you are a fan of Italian Food.

Overall Super... but disappointed this time

Was there a few weeks back and had called for a salad with an insect in it which was disappointing, to compensate for which they offered only a 10% discount.. and even charged me service charge on the bill.

The place was one of my favorites with me visiting it every month, but this was disappointing.

I decided to go try Penne to experience what it was like since I’d read so much about their pizzas and I’m a pizza fan. Was Penne good enough for me? You’re just about to find out!

Food- As the name suggests, Penne serves Italian & Mediterranean cuisine- Pizzas, pastas, risottos, etc. My friends and I decided to call for their famous 13” thin crust Margherita pizza which I just had to try and the veg Antipasti platter. Since it’s an expensive place, we decided to stick to just 2 dishes. The pizza was nice. It had cherry tomatoes and yum cheese. I just thought that the pizza sauce could have been much better… it was very tomatoey! I think if a person has that 13” pizza it wont fill them up cause it’s so thin and light! Then we got the Anti-pasti platter and our eyes started deciding which item to have first. There were baked mushrooms with cream cheese and spinach, jacket mini potatoes with cheese, Caesar salad, 4 different kinds of Bruschettas with mushrooms, Arrabiata, tomatoes & cheese and cold baked beans as toppings, babycorn with stuff in it that tasted good and a tartar dip. I only liked the Jacket mini potatoes, Caesar salad and the dip. Unfortunately we realized after eating that we had come to ‘Penne’ and hadn’t called for their pasta!

Ambience- Penne is located near Juhu Post Office, close to Rock Bottom. It’s a beautiful place where they have two sections, one the inside and the other on the outside. We decided to sit outside as it was just too lovely and wasn't too hot either. When you step inside, you’ll find gorgeous chandeliers, pretty candle stands and simple and yet chic furniture. Outside its just as good, only better. I fell in love with the place instantly!

Service- The service was decent; nothing to complain about.

Prices- Yes I know this is a high-end restaurant and I can’t possibly expect lower prices but I wish the food was as good as the price! The pizza which can’t fill a single person up costs Rs. 450 and the Antipasti veg platter cost us Rs. 550! Risottos are priced at Rs. 500 and upwards, the veg pastas are Rs. 450 and up and desserts start at Rs. 300. If you ask me, I don’t think the food is worth the price.

Verdict- Penne is beautiful and a great place to go to on a date or with a close group of friends and family. The food is ok and expensive for a casual lunch or dinner. Go if it’s something special or if you don’t mind spending.

best italian food

I had been to this place when they first started and was honestly disappointed as choice for vegetarians was negligible. Had an opportunity to visit them once again almost after a gap of 1.5 yrs. I should say they have revived their menu considerably. Not only did i find good choice for veg but also the bar menu has improved considerably.

Had an aunt visiting me from USA (she is not indian), who has also spent considerable amount of years in Italy and she remarked that this food was heavenly.

Had minestrone soup which was light and flavored. We also ordered an amazing veg risotto - perfectly done!

With 2 soups, 2 alcoholic drinks and 2 main dishes the dent on my wallet was 3000/-, which though steep was worth it!

February 13, 2011response from management at Penne:

Hi Priya,
We are glad that you and your aunt enjoyed your meal at Penne and liked our menu. Hope you visit us more often.

February 14, 2011response from management at Penne:

Hi Francis .... we will surely do that! Keep up the good work... infact have some visitors from USA coming over the weekend, planning to bring them to Penne for dinner on fri 18th. Will call and reserve the table as we will be around 11 of us!

give it a shot.

Been there a couple of times. It is a great place and one that you'll want to come back to. The pizzas were up to the mark and so were the pastas and the appetizers.
They have a veg platter which was pretty good. The Sunday brunches are pretty reputed, though i have never had a chance to try it.
Do not try the sizzling brownie. It seems tempting since everyone around you is ordering for it. but keep away from it. It is just passable.
Go there to have a good time.

INSECTIANO PENNE

Planned my Saturday Brunch at this restaurant & the bad experience started right from the ordeal through which we had to reach the place. The way to restaurant is completely dug up at places courtesy BMC & one had to face lot of dust at the entrance, thus giving you a yucky feeling. After settling down in the restaurant we ordered OLIVE PRESTO FOCACCIA - the nightmare we faced was a GREEN LEAF BUG one one of the crispy bread. The poor insect could not resist the crispy & fresh taste of the bread though. Somehow after this incident we somehow could not enjoy the rest of the meal. We had PENNE VODKA pasta which was promised to have some flavour of vodka, however the same was not to be found. The vegeteriano pizza was a nice one, Thin crust wood fired pizza. The accolades of the afternoon went to the amazing Tiramisu, so amazing that i could rate it as one of the best i have ever had, Service was another disaster, did not get water for 15 min despite informing the steward while serving the pizza. no one to attend despite there were only 3 tables on saturday afternoon & yes they have the courage to charge 10% service charge with that sloopy service. Total damage for two ---- 1465
bread -200, pizza - 500, pasta - 490 & tiramisu - 275

Max penne

Well, I'm glad I went to this place "blind", i.e. I'd not had chance to read the other rather negative reviews below. Not sure I would have taken a chance seeing as almost all were very critical. Philistines! I'm now wondering if some of them are reviews written by disgruntled staff from Olive

Cafe Penne is great, and quite possibly the best authentic Italian restaurant in Mumbai. The food, service, and ambience are pretty hard to beat.

We ordered chicken and prawns to start - the wait staff are more than happy to make suggestions. Both dishes were cooked well and flavoursome. And the portions were large enough for 2 to share.

Then pizza and pasta for main course, along with the best garlic bread I've ever had in Bombay :o) Again, the portion sizes would have suited an overweight opera singer perfectly! Proof of this was in the fact that none of us had room to order pudding, even though the menu descriptions were VERY tempting.

The outdoor seating area was a very pleasant place for a civilised dining experience with your significant other. And inside the ambience looked even better with simple decor and statement black chandeliers.

Overall, I would struggle to suggest any area of improvement - perhaps cushions on the outdoor seating maybe?! But that would be all, unless you've got an opera-singer's backside

Average food! TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!

I went to Cafe Penne sometime back and i was so put off with the experience i would never go back to the place or recommend it to anyone!
We drove to the place from south mumbai and they told us if we didn't reach on time our reservation would be canceled! When we reached the restaurant it was empty and until we finished dinner no one came in so i didnt understand the whole pressure to be on time. Next we ordered a salad, an appetizer, sangria for 2, pizza, pasta and risotto. When the food came in we had asked for a salad without mushrooms they got it with the mushrooms, appetizer was alright nothing fantastic, next they got us the pizza with wrong toppings, the pasta and risotto were average again. When we got the bill we realized they had charged us for sangria for 6. When we asked for the manager a very very snooty guy came in with attitude and refused to understand we had ordered just for 2. Finally after a lot of argument they decided to remove 1 glass of sangria from the bill which was really really cheap!
Overall i would never go back to a place like this which does not value their customers. Food is average, horrible service and terrible staff, stay away from Cafe Penne , its only a waste of time and money.

Amazing place!!...

The place has an excellent ambience and is situated at a peaceful place at Juhu. I would suggest during evening especially during winter months to sit outside. The Pizza and pastas' generally range from 450 - 600 and is quite big enough to serve two people. The service is very polite and quite efficient, in fact they shall put any topping which you want on the pizza, we asked for olives and jalapeños and they put it for free. Make sure you ask for extra topping as they don’t have any by default!!

The place's got an open bar, with some of the finest scotches and single malts, but we gave it miss for it was more for 40 year olds. The drinks are 400 for cocktails and about 200-250 for vodka-rum single pegs. For non- alcoholics, try the virgin margarita shaken (peach or kiwi) it's awesome and cost 175/-

The starters are two kinds hot and cold antipasti, no point having grilled stuff on cold bread so we went for bruchettas with cottage cheese and they were just perfect , starters were ranging from 235-300/-, so pretty reasonable, not too heavy and got the stomachs rolling

Overall, w/o alcohol and the place is 500/- head and might be lesser for more people. But the pizzas were genuinely Italian, I can say is as I have stayed in Italy for 2 months and they reminded me of just those thin crust, Bolognese, olive oil dipped Italian marvels, close but true!!

Worst Restaurant EVER!

Frankly, I am surprised that this place is still doing business. I visited Penne on Christmas day, and was appalled beyond words. The main course was simply inedible. We were a group of 12 people and I can't point out one person who enjoyed, or even have more than a few bites. The fish had a rotten smell, and the food was so bland, almost tasteless. In all honesty, the Pizza was pretty good, and the service was excellent. But in my opinion, a 500 rupee pasta should atleast be better than the sunfeast instant variety, but sadly, it didn't even come close...

My advice: Skip this place

Good food with a even better ambiance

I would really suggest to anyone who goes to this joint to avoid the air condition indoors not because its not good but because the open air ambiance is just too excellent. 5 on 5

The service stood up to the mark. Neither very laggy where you finally thank your dish has arrived, Nor over enthusiast waiters who love to stand and watch as u try to enjoy your food. service was 5 on 5

Food was not in par with the expectations but still very delicious. i would suggest you order something from the 'Chef recommendations' page. food 4 on 5.

Great Ambiance + Good Food

One of my favorite restaurants in suburbs. Perfect setting for a romantic dinner and great decor. The prices are steep but the kitchen is weel equipped with some nice entrees. I rate the pizzas here as one of the top 3 in the city. The portions of the entree could be better though.
Staff and service is expectional. All in all, good place to me if you wish to spend quality time with your better half and gulp down some wine and grab amazing pizzas! Total damage for 2 with drinks would be approx Rs. 2k

Penne : Restobar - Lounge

Nearest Landmarks: Right opposite, Spinach the supermarket. Close to the ISKON Temple and Hotel Ramee Guestline.

Cuisine: Italian

Serve Alcohol: Yes

Parking: Valet available

Ambience;
Penne has two markedly defined areas, the Al Fresco area outside and the fine dining area inside and both have a warm and inviting feel to them.
The canopied al fresco area is landscaped with greenery and thus shielded from the hustle and bustle of the road outside. It would be ideal for a meal combined with a leisurely tête-à-tête or just a languid afternoon/evening spent sipping the beverage of choice over pizza or munching on nibbles.
The uncluttered and cozy elegance of the fine dining area welcomes you with its matt gold walls (I absolutely loved them!) and is softly lit with black chandeliers. The tables were well spaced, keeping privacy in mind. Minor Quibble; I wish the span of the individual tables were slightly more spacious, as the serving dishes were quite large and thus ended up crowding the table uncomfortably.

Staff;
Quick, courteous, unobtrusive and very well informed.

What we ate;
Starters;
Fusilli Con Pollo Arenza (Rs 395) a spicy chicken starter, with bits of bell peppers, flavored with herbs. It was good
Funghetti fritti Al Spin (Rs 235 for 6 pieces) a starter that was made of a mushroom each, packed with a gooey mix of cheese and spinach and dipped in bread crumbs and deep fried to golden perfection. Recommended by the waiter, this one left us salivating for more!

Pizza Trastevere (Rs 395) an oh-so-thin crust pizza, crispy crunchy on the rim and sodden with our chosen toppings in the middle. It came to the table piping hot, straight from the oven.

Pollo Siciliana (Rs 275) was penne and chicken in cream sauce. Delightful!
Rosotto Ortolana con aspa (Rs 295) the most divine risotto I have had in a while. The consistency was creamy and melt in the mouth.
Garlic Bread (Rs 80) Crisp, airy bread slivers saturated just right in butter and subtly flavored with garlic.

Dessert was;
Triple Chocolate Biscotti (Rs 225) 2 scoops of ice cream and bits of chocolate cake covered in 3 different types of chocolate sauces and sprinkled with roasted almond slivers and topped of with bits of biscotti. Though it sounded very tempting on paper, it was a disappointment otherwise. Their version of biscotti turned out to be plain old chocolate wafer biscuits and the sauce was just ordinary melted chocolate.

What we drank;
Since all of were teetotalers, we sipped on;

Virgin Kiwi Margarita (Rs 150) a tangy sweet and sour drink with the delicious after taste of kiwi.
Virgin Black current Margarita (Rs 150) was good too, but I thought it was a tad too sweet, for me.
Iced Tea (Rs 150) was average.

All the ingredients used seemed absolutely fresh, with a special mention to the pizza dough which was freshly kneaded and all the sauces that were flavorful and light. Penne is priced on the slightly higher side, but it’s worth every penny.

the Best italian food

I love italian food and cafe penne made my evening. First of all the staff is excellent out there. They treated me very well. The ambience is also very good. Only bad thing about it is the inside place i.e airconditioned part is very noisy so would suggest to sit out in the open cafe since it is also too expensive. Pizza pastas and risottos were excellent. Every penny is worth the food out there. I believe a foodie would definitely like the food there. One could overlook the ambiance for the food.

Disappointed

I had heard a lot about this place so finally decided to go.

The ambience is more like a family restaurant than an Italian place. We ordered Bruschetta where they served 3 different toppings but only the tomato one was good. Could not make out what the other ones were. The pizza was also strictly ok.

Was down with food poisoning the next day so venture at your own risk.

Overall the place doesnt live up to the hype. Can be given a miss.

Best italian ever

Italian is my favorite cuisine and I'm very particular about my pastas and other Italian dishes. This restaurant, by far, is the best italian i've had to date. Not to forget the wonderful dim light ambience !
Every item on their menu is amazing but I highly recommend the penne vodka.
The ingredients here are specially imported and this can be seen in the quality of their product.
I'd been here for my birthday( which happened to be on a saturday) and the restaurant was really full.. I called them an hour in advance to make reservations and they said they will not be able to get me a table before 10pm.I, then, personally requested the restaurant manager- a very sweet lady- to arrange for a table for me as it was a special occasion i was celebrating. She was very accommodating and ensured that i had a good evening.
I must mention that the portions are very small.
We called for a penne voda, some lasagne ( i cant recall the name exactly), a non alcoholic mocktail and a dessert. Ended up shelling out Rs. 1450.
Definitely an expensive restaurant but worth every penny :)

What abt the hygeine?

I had waited to get into Penne for days before I actually happened to walk in there a few days back. Maybe my expectations were way too high. Honestly the place was not good.
We ordered for a thin crust Pizza with Veg toppings worth 325 INR. It was a chef's recommendation but was not my taste at all. Penne Arabiatta (Rs.375) was just ok and was served minus the bread. Nothing exceptionally good. We called for the garlic bread with cheese (Rs.250). The bread was fresh and that was the only part that i enjoyed. We were seated outdoors and just in the middle of the meal we saw a rat pass by under the table next to us. That was enough to kill our appetite and get out of that place as soon as we could. So a semi-meal (a meal without starters n desserts) for three and a meeting with a RAT would cost you around Rs.1000 at Penne.

Amazing Italian Food

I wouldn't give full marks to the ambience but would say that it isn't bad after all. Just felt that the furnishings in the restaurant do need an upgrade. But loved the cutlery that was so typically italian.
Their Pizza's and Pasta's are to die for. I ordered a minestrone soup that didn't make it to my table. But they made it up by sending some awesome grilled fish with mustard sauce. And yes the grande finale was the tiramisu....something to drool over till i visit that place again.
