Best Pasta in the City

In one end of the phoenix market city mall lies this most amazing café which for me is a delight from every perspective. I have tried their unlimited menu and let me give you a review of the same. They start of with a Tomato soup more like a minestrone one which is flavorful and very balanced in spices, texture & sourness. Texture is important as for me a very thin soup tastes more like “rasam” and puts me off.

For starters they had barbequed baby potatoes and nachos with sour cream. The high point of Café pico is that each of the ingredients that they use are of the highest quality and hence the simplest of dishes release the best of flavors. The potatoes are very very high on quality as they are not “sweet” and as their skins are “on” they soak up the fat and flavor and impart a mouthful of heaven. The nachos are also nice and warm and the salsa & sour cream add a bit of delight.

However the best dish by far is the main course – Sphagetti – Aglio Olio. For true foodies and for ones which really enjoy their food I think this one dish would define everything. It’s the simplest of dishes and yet the way I have eaten it at Café Pico is incomparable to even the best joints I have had Italian in. The sphagetti is perfectly moist & the garlic , butter ,dried chilli & pepper are incredibly fresh. The sprinkle of dried parmesan on top finishes off the most amazing pasta I have ever tasted.

To round it off the dessert was a perfect brownie with ice cream.Tasted superb and fresh.

For a lovely ambience and really high quality food I would rate café pico very highly.I have been there thrice and each time the dishes have been exactly the same.Kudos to that.

Good food, ambiance so so

Visited this little café in Market City Kurla… had seen it while passing through & thought it might be a good place to try. Initially thought that we might go in for the buffet but somehow after glancing at the food on display, decided against it. Firstly, felt that the variety wasn’t too great as compared to most other buffets. Secondly, the small bowls of salads & dips made it look as if they were serving leftovers & not fresh food. Anyway, we went in for A La Carte, where the food was decent enough, no complaints. Good variety too. The seating is a bit uncomfortable though. It is not a large place so with the buffet laid out, you feel cramped & too close to the other diners. Would I be back? Maybe for a coffee & a snack at non-meal times.

Pleasant Place to hangout

I visited Cafe Pico a few days back with my friends...We were looking for a place to chill out and just chat and we spotted the place. We decided to give it a try...The place is small, but colorfully decorated...A cute lil European Restaurant....The walls are beautifully covered with bright colors and books....The chairs are a lil uncomfortable, but the food more than compensates for the little trouble of sitting there...The Management should definitely work on the cooling system of the Cafe as it becomes a little hot sometimes...

The service is average, the staff is courteous and can help you with the menu if you are in a a dilemma of what to order. The menu is not very extensive, but they serve some delightful dishes on their menu.

We orderd Veg Quessadilla, Greek Tiropetes and Brazilian Rice fritters for appetizers...The Quessadilla tasted good and the other dishes were delightful too...As I had read the reviews of this place before checking out the place, I knew a must try is the Pasta and Sandwiches of this place...and I must say I am not at all disappointed...We ordered the Marinated goats cheese, celery and tomato sandwich and paneer roll, alongwith Homemade Ravioli and Mushroom duxelle Crepes...The Crepes were one of the best and the Sandwich and the Roll tasted equally delightful....

Finally, we came the long awaited dessert time...Chocolate Orange Fondant...HEavenly...It was amazing...The cinnamon doughnut with coffee ice cream...Oh! I simply loved it...

A must try of this place is the desserts...

Cafe Pico is a good place to hangout with friends, but the negatives include the higher prices alongwith a limited menu and small portion of food....They could definitely improve on these points and they do have the potential to be one of the best...(They are already one of the best! )

You can also try the all tasting menu they have...They have some amazing offers...and with the burrp! Card one can also avail 20% discount...I would love to visit here again when I have recieved my burrp! card!!

Great cooking!

Had the monsoon package deal. For the chef - please take a bow. The chicken kofta, the Goan curry and then brownie were exceptional. The other stuff was great too. And the unlimited sangria, just did the trick! Love the high quality of cooking presented at the price points therein. Looking forward to more of your outlets and maybe a little more engaging waiting staff. Will be back for more.

Cafe Pico, one of the best cafe foods in Mumbai!!!

went there last nite while shopping with my wife in the mall.

they have this delightful vfm package of unlimited offer @ just 400 all inclusive of taxes.

The spread was really awesome!!! each dish was better then the next.

1) Nveg:

1 soup: did not have since not a soup guy.

Appetizers: Chicken wings: Nice, wifey had since i prefer boneless only.

Jerk Chicken: Superb.....well grilled chicken, very tender....

Mutton burger in pita bread: Dish of the meal maybe even Cafe. Tender mutton patty baked in pita bread with sour cream and other filling.....Had 3-4. Delicious to the core!!!!!

Mains: Chicken Aglio Spagetti: Again one of the best spagetti's ive ever had. the butter, garlic and chicken combo was just too terrific....

Dessert: Melting chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and choc sauce: Voila!!!! Melted to perfection.....No one can eat just one!!!!!

2) Veg:

Paneer shahlik was nice and tender.... could do with some more spice....but still good dish.

potato in spicy sauce was delicious too.....baby potatoes in some chef special sauce was tangy and spicy....just right!!!!

nachos with sour cream and salsa......this was nice....best had with the jerk chicken.......

mains: Veg aglioli spaghetti: Did not have coz was stuffed with the chicken spaghetti....

Overall i rate this 9/10. 1 mark less coz i dont eat chicken wings.....Thus techically it should be 10/10 for whaterver i ate was awesome!!!!

will be visting here soon....All those out there looking for a good quality meal with variety and at vfm pricing should definitely drop in here!!!!!!

P.S.: My mouth was watering while i wrote this review.....coming back soon in the next 2-3 weeks time......

Good food... well priced... but needs some changes

Visited Pico last month to celebrate a special occasion. We opted for the all you can eat meal (priced at Rs 350 per person).. We thoroughly enjoyed the food but since we all had really small appetites we couldn't eat everything. We requested them to pack the rest of the food, but they refused to do so. I feel that the management needs to consider that not everyone can eat that size of portions. It means unnecessary wasting of food, which I am sure a lot of ppl wouldn't appreciate... I guess they should either have a limited portion meal which can be shared by a group (without any top-ups) or reduce the price and portion sizes.

Great variety, good food

Went there last week for lunch, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food at the new restaurant. Had the Acapulco chicken wrap and the Mozambique chicken. Both dishes were extremely flavorful, but the clear winner was the wrap. Delicious taste and deceptively light. The Mozambique chicken was really good as well, but the sauce was a touch too sweet for my liking. It was still a great dish though. Didn't have time to try their desserts. Will definitely try the pannacotta next time.

Good Food : But a lot else desired

Amongst the bad choice of restaurants at phoenix market city... Pico does stand out for its interesting mix of world cusine.

Things to adore :
1. Great desserts... Must try the chocolate orange fondant or for that matter any of their desserts from thr day,s specials
2. Great taste and generous portions of mains.. The pan seared fish is worth a mention but the pasta and sandwiches definitely win the race.
3. Very interesting sides.. The skinned potatoes and the sauteed mushrooms are so basic yet quite appealing

The bad things:
1. No liquor license yet
2. The waiters need to be better trained on the menu as well as in their hospitality skills... Been there 4 times.. Not even a nod of acknowledgement
3. The aircon needs massive improvement... Can get very stuffy
4. One may just hate the god awful chairs.. Their red coloured backs are just plain ugly and uncomfortable... While the high chairs are wobbly as hell.

To the guys at the restaurant... Buck up...you have the important part right...the food..... Just get the peripheral things going and you would have a great restaurant.

As an addendum; I have visited your restaurant twice since then and the service has severely slacked. Once we witnessed a fight between the chef and the waiter. And the second time we ordered food at 9.30 pm .. precisely a medium rare steak which did not arrive till 11pm!
And what bothers is that on both the times there was no manager in the restaurant.

World food, if you only know the world on a globe

We went on a cosy Sunday evening and wanted some delish food. What we got however was anything but. The rice in the rissotto was undercooked and the dish itself lacked flavour. We had ordered something else (i forget the name) but that was chewy and tasted bitter. This isn't a world cafe at all

Reasonably good food

I think the people who previously reviewed this place went when it was being set up. I recently visited the place. Definitely the set up is a bit weird, the place gets hot even with the a/c vent being right above your head. The food took a long time to come too. However most of what we ordered was good - the beef tenderloin steak was perfect, the shepherd's pie was great. The almond crust covered basa was ok, and so was one of the salads we ordered. The amount came to a little over 500 Rs per head, which I think was slightly expensive. However my beef tenderloin was so good, that I could ignore the costs.

Bad Service, Below Average Food

I visited this place when this restaurant newly opened i believe, the time where they were offering free meals to everyone. But, unfortunately they had nothing to offer by the time i reached that is around 2:30, Is that not a lunch time? So, whatever i asked for was finished. So, without any hesitation i walked off.

Another visit? Maybe...

What is the most important thing to remember when you go for a tasting session? “Must remember to make my MasterChef face after every bite,” said our burrper Farah J Chaudhary. While her comment led to all sorts of funny faces, it also set the tone for a fun evening. Café Pico is one of the first few restaurants to open at Phoenix Market City in Kurla. The décor is largely white with hints of green while the best seat in the house is the one with the high chairs near the door.

Bottles of pickled vegetables and chilli oil are stacked across an entire wall giving it a playful touch of colour. What we didn’t like were the white, railway station-like lights killing the warmth that we are accustomed to in a café. Another teething problem was the defunct air-conditioning – apparently due to problems with the mall’s central cooling system. They’ve installed large fans for the time being but and it will be a little while before it’s fixed. A little birdie also told us that their chairs aren’t very stable and replacements have been ordered.

Before we move on to the food, I must warn you, we were five of us at Café Pico out to taste as many dishes as we could. Yes we’re guilty of being gluttons, but hey! cut our XXL appetites some slack. While we wanted to order little portions of almost everything on the menu, sadly much of it wasn’t available. Clearly, hosting continuous tasting sessions took its toll and we were among the last to enter at 10pm. Nevertheless, we handed the reins over to the Manager and let him order for us.

For starters, we tried the Chicken Sambussa, Korean Pancakes and vegetarian Empanada. The Chicken Sambussa was just another name for chicken samosa’s. The bland filling left us wanting Jeff Caterer’s spicy kheema samosas instead. The Vegetarian Empanada shaped like karanjee or gujia was okay at best. The Korean Pancakes, yellow doughy triangles with diced vegetables, were a little like idlis steamed with diced carrots and beans. Dispte this rather tepid start, the Soya and Sesame dip served with the pancakes made a big difference. Of the three starters, this last one is the only one we thought was worth recommending.

Moving on to the salads, there was nothing exceptional about the Roast Chicken and Artichoke salad. As far as the Rocket and Mixed Herb Salad with Parmesan goes, the rocket was soggy and soaked with the oily dressing. The sweet potato wedges were interesting, but were horribly greasy. The crushed potatoes on the other hand reminded us of home-made jeera aloo, although we doubt the chef used any jeera. While the peeled and diced potatoes were supposedly sautéed with herbs, the flavour was completely amiss. Verdict on the first course – too much oil and everything was fried!

With that heavy start, we weren’t even thinking of the next course when it arrived. Once again we decided to nibble our way through lots of different dishes. What would we recommend? For the vegetarians, we say the Semolina Pancakes with Lentils and Feta Cheese is a must try. The pancakes are stacked with layers of grilled vegetables, lentils and feta cheese in between and topped with a tangy tomato sauce. We don’t really like aubergine, yet, we actually enjoyed every bite of the grilled slice that sat snugly within the pancake. The Summer Vegetable Risotto looked like something that you would prepare to appease The Incredible Hulk’s. Although after a spoonful of the thick green sludge with Italian Arborio rice and diced yellow peppers, we decided, he probably wouldn’t have liked either.

On the upside the Tangliata Di Manzo and Spicy Mozambique Chicken were delicious. The first one was sliced tenderloin served with a mixed herb salad and crushed potato. Beef lovers and steak addicts, this was truly a lesson in what great tenderloin is like, sans any gravy to drown the taste of the meat. The meat was cooked perfectly with a delightfully crisp crust that added that lovely charred flavour to the each bite. For once, we could actually taste the meat instead of an overpowering sauce. For those who can’t do without the gravy I’m sure you can ask the chef for some on the side (*sigh*).

The Spicy Mozambique Chicken won us over with its crazy combination of grilled chicken served on a bed of sabu dana; yes, that ‘bed of tapioca taboulleh’ mentioned in the menu. Here, we would like to raise a toast to the chef for introducing this fun and novel combination.

The Fish Cakes we tried after this were large crispy Basa cutlets, which were a tad heavy but balanced well with the blanched spinach. The one disappointment was the Tobago Marinated Chicken. The menu describes it as a ‘Chicken breast marinated with mixed herbs using a traditional Caribbean recipe’. Sadly, you can skip this one because it sounded far more exotic than it tasted.

After this strenuous eating, we almost skipped dessert. But the manager insisted we try an assortment even if it’s just to taste. Unfortunately, we unanimously decided that the cakes served were a bit stale. We’ve tried better cheese cakes than the Polish Baked Citrus Cheese Cake and Ludy’s Peanut Butter Cake was just passable. We enjoyed the cupcake, which tasted like home-made chocolate cake.

So while we won’t make the trip to specially dine at café Pico, if we are at the mall we may just drop in. You know how we love a good deal and the high price coupled with small portions doesn’t make this a value for money bet. We suggest visiting Café Pico if you are at Phoenix Market City anytime before 30th June. With 50% off, you just might come back pleasantly surprised!
