Good food but heavy on the wallet

Cpk has its set of loyalists and haters! I somehow am still on the fence!! I liked quite a few dishes on the menu! The focaccia bread with tomatoes being a great appetiser ! But cut to the pizzas! The California veggie was good but not top drawer! The wild mushroom pizza on the other hand was a better option! (Strictly for mushroom lovers) apart from that there's not much to shout about! The pasta too was good enough to justify its price! However the reason I don't mind entering cpk at any time is the tiramisu! I've visited many places and tried the tiramisu but none have made me relish it the way i did at cpk!!

My Favorite

I am a regular at CPK Lower Parel. I just love this place. Amazing pizzas, pasta & salads. They earlier used to have a mushroom pizza with pesto sauce as the base, wild mushrooms as toppings & shaved parmesan...it was out of the world. For some strange unknown reason, they have changed the recipe now. I had requested the mgmt. to review their decision & go back to the original recipe. The Thai crunchy chicken salad is also yum. Spaghetti aglio olio & parmesan crusted grilled chicken breast are my favorites. This is my all time favorite restaurant.

Can try once, if your wallet allows it!

Went with my friend for a quick lunch on a dull wednesday afternoon last month. He was treating for a promotion at work. Had heard a lot of things about this place, so wanted to get a taste-but thank god, I waited for some bakra to come along and treat me because I could hardly afford to pay for a lunch for more than 1 person here (I am almost broke by the 3rd week of every month!)

Anyway, so we walk in, I like the ambiance. It kinda makes it known clearly that this place was a mill once upon a time. Black, yellow, white colors dominate-all in all, a sober look. I like :) Also, one side of the vast space is made up of a wall fitted with wine bottles. Nice :) The decor is thus nice and good enough for a date or going with family or celebration.

Staff is polite and helpful. We had a pesto penne which was very delicious (but I would have liked more quantity) and a veg greek pizza (don't remember the exact name, but it was greek something). The server pointed out that it would be dry and would have no cheese, but i wanted to try something new. Ultimately, we got a thin crust with loads of veggies (tomatoes, cucumber, yum yum) on it. My friend said it tasted like fried papad :) Actually, it kinda did and I don't think anyone would consider it a pizza-but I liked it because I like veggies, and also because I was not paying (ha ha). I think the bill was around 1000 or 1100 for these. We did not have time to get a dessert because we were running late for a movie.

If I find someone else to give me a treat, I will go back solely to have desserts this time :)

Mefifornia

CPK had a Mexifornia festival which aimed to serve up Mexican delicacies with a Californian twist. We went for a preview.

Food: We started off with the paneer enchiladas which was one of the best dishes that evening and tasted as good as it looked. Soft paneer enveloped in soft tortillas with sour cream and a tomato based sauce.

Next up were the tacos with soft shells (yes maybe it's Californian) stuffed with fried paneer and accompanied with rice. Both were bland and can be avoided.

After a long wait came the Baja Supreme Pizza with generous helping's of mushrooms, red onions, beans and corn. A thin-crust pizza with a spicy base this hit the spot. We ordered the same without the mushrooms and onions and to our surprise it got even better.

Dessert was sugar crusted churros with slightly dark chocolate mousse.

Drinks: The cucumber cooler they had was fresh and perfect for summer.

Price: Didn't pay for the meal so not sure of the damages

Some items are interesting while other could use some work. If they had more innovations like their Tostada it would have been a big hit.

Fine pizza dining!!

California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) had been highly recommended by a few friends... More for their salads than their pizzas. Yesterday we experienced the same and completely agree with them.

CPK is situated between Hamleys and Gajalee on the first floor at Skyzone in Phoenix mills. The one of its kind open kitchen, plush interiors and very comfortable seating make the ambience excellent for fine dining, which is a pleasant surprise as the name showcases it to be a pizza place!

Thai Crunch salad was what we were recommended and what we fell in love with.. Crunchy rice flakes with veggies, peanuts in a light Thai sauce turned this salad into a delight for our taste buds. We tried the newly introduced Fiama pizza, which was thin crust, covered well with Mozzarella cheese and generously garnished with thinly sliced onions.. Very interesting.

For those looking for tiny meals or just something to fill that little place in the tummy, the Small Cravings festival which concluded yesterday, was just perfect. We simply loved the Serrano Cheese toast and the Black bean Quesadillas were nice too, though the flavours took a while to grow on us.

All in all,a good experience, interesting food and lovely ambience. Looking forward to the new additions to their menu. After all it's Pizza dining made fine!!

Lots of options

One of the very few spacious restaurants at High Street Phoenix.

The interiors are really good and the ceiling height gives it a grand look and feel.

The menu here is very extensive and one good thing is that there are a lot of options for vegetarians.

Starters : wonton rolls are a must try. California Veggie pizza and Tostada pizza have been tried and are yummy.

Pastas: Garlic cream one is good and coming to the desserts if you like chocolate , you will love the chocolate brownie.

The staff was also helpful and explained the various dishes and recommended the specials. All in all a good experience.

Fancy Kitchen...!

I had been here for a friend's birthday celebration. The first thing I noticed was the very US-looking entrance. The interiors are also nothing short of being impressive. A booth-style seating which tends to get too compact! Also for some reason I experienced a discomfort in my arm while eating, that's when I realised the tables are higher than usual. Minus one for that because it gets a little tedious if you plan to sit longer. The open kitchen caught my attention since its the first Iv seen in Mumbai.

The service was good and the staff were quiet friendly. They poured in a lot of frank suggestions which helped us order right (instead of ordering in excess since we were a large group). Plus one for that.

Food-wise CPK is good. Pizza's are their main attraction and they are good at it. Not so sure about the rest of the menu. We ordered for 3 Pizza's - Santa Fe Chicken (yum!), Chipotle Chicken (super yum!) and Fire Roasted Vegetable Pizza (uhh okay...actually they were just random vegetables on a thin crust - looked more like our regular raita without the curd); Pesto Cream Penne was just about fine...the usual pasta you'd get at a pizza-place. Since we had the birthday cake to finish, we went light on desserts; ordered a chocolate brownie and Tiramisu (both yummy).

CPK is a little too heavy on the pocket with pizza's costing an average of Rs 450-500 each. Ditto with pastas. Its good to come here once in a while, but I can't make this my regular joint (definitely not if I have a big group to treat). Overall a good experience.

Suggestion - When I visited CPK they didn't have a reservation policy and we waited for close to 45minutes for a table since my friend was adamant on treating us at CPK. So if you HAVE to dine here, come in early (especially on weekends).

I had been to CKP LOWER PAREL on 14th FEB i.e on valentine day with my gf with a hope for sum good lunch at CKP n had a worst experience altogether. the service was too lousy n d waiters didnt gave any damn to take order n to top it all they were full of attitude as if they r doing a favor by serving us. i was literary ignored by a waiter wen i was calling him to plc d order. later i ordered one platter of WONTON SPRING ROLLS n wat i got was a fine plastic oil brushing string inside it which was later on replace by a fresh new ones. I had also orderd for PESTO CRÈME PENNE which they took almost 40mins to serve me n that too it tasted very poor n penne pasta was not even cooked properly . wen i askd for d complain letter they tried to cover up their mistake by ofering me free deserts...... the manager didnt even gave a damn to visit our table to apologize for the pathetic service offered by them.

CPK - oh what fine-dining

Who could have thought you could make a fine dining restaurant out of a Pizza place...but CPK has managed to that and more...of course they have pastas and salads as well but i am a fan of their Pizza's....i recommend Meat Cravers Pizza for those who are visiting the place for the 1st time, though the well set menu is there for you to explore as per taste and appetite. Also a stand out quality of the place is its good & prompt service which makes the experience of eating at CPK really worth-while...i did read some reviews calling this place expensive, well the high-end Pizza of any other chain are as expensive but not as yumm...the points table stands as follows:-
Ambiance - 5/5
Food - 4/5
Service - 5/5
Overall 4/5

A mixed bag. But do try it out

I went to CPK when it started, and about a month later with two contrasting experiences:

First visit: Pesto with Shrimp pasta order was nonchalantly tossed on to the table by the waiter (without the shrimp) and tasting way too salty. Poor service and worse food.

Second visit: Significantly better service and nice Mexican pizza. The people going with me got tasty wraps as well and this was more fitting for a CPK experience. Is it as good as the American one? Not really, but CPK gives you a variety of pizzas that's lacking at the other usual outlets. The tandoor chicken pizza available in the US was surprisingly not to be found here, surprisingly.

For future visits: You should try it out as I feel that they will bring it up to the standards fitting to its brand name in the US. It's got a nice setup inside and you do get a lot of variety with food and drinks, beyond the pizza. Moreover, if you're in Phoenix looking to grab a meal then it's a little quieter, more reasonable, and easier to get a table then the restaurants in palladium.

Lets face this- what we eat at Dominoes and Pizza Hut are really not the real pizzas- but yes if you want a taste for the real stuff once in a while (because we do love our Pizza Huts and Dominoes too na ;) ) this is THE place to be...great pizzas, interesting combinations, excellent garlic bread and good salads...yes it's expensive but then we have our home delivery pizza joints for the rest :)

Yummy food..Little heavy on pocket though...

Really nice place with simple yet classy interior & ambiance. Food is lovely. Pasta, pizzas n starters are upto a vry high standard.Their Red velvet cake is a must try for all the people with sweet tooth.. Highly recommended.. yet i have a little complain- The prices are a bit high__we had a lunch for two people which costed around 2100 bucks.. but still if you think about quality & quantity of food, their level of hygiene, Polite & helpful staff and lavish interiors, u will feel that its worth to splurge yourself once in a while.. Thank you so much people for a wonderful Meal Experience.. Will be coming back for sure..

Much ho-ha about nothing

So... you would think to yourself... "this must be a nice restaurant!" when you hear it's name. You walk in to the place and your confidence soars high as you see the nice ambiance this place provides. You are sure this place serves great food. The menu is great, the waiters are friendly and the service is good. Being a vegetarian, I quickly glanced the at the section and instantaneously fixated my eyes on the "Greek Pizza". Exoctic, I thought to myself. My wife ordered garlic bread, smoked pasta and ice tea and I went with the greek pizza and beer. My friend joined us later on to order a thin crust pesto pizza. And this is how it all fared:

1. Veg Greek Pizza : Disappointing. It seemed that they had put raw salad on top of the cooked pizza with some dressing that didn't go either with the salad or the pizza itself. It was messy to eat. It was a "kachumbar" on top of pizza. This pizza would make pineapple pizza seem tasty. The rawness of the salad and the cooked cheese pizza just didn't go well at all.

2. Ice Tea : Now, I don't know how people in California like their ice teas but this one is definitely NOT for the Indian taste buds. Peach ice teas should be a bit tangy... this one seemed a bit bland with a slight off flavour.

3. Thin crust Pesto Pizza : Okay, I have to give this one to them... when they say thin... they mean thin. The crust was absolutely delightful and crispy. Unfortunately, everything else wasn't. The pesto was bland... forget the other flavours... it was missing salt!

4. Garlic bread : Good !

5. Smoke Pasta : The waiter had warned us that this pasta is a bit spicy. True to his words, it was a bit spicy. No doubt the pasta had a bit of smoked flavour to it. It was well dressed. To be honest, there wasn't anything wrong with the pasta except that it just didn't appeal to any of our taste buds.

Overall, I think these guys haven't really researched the Indian what appeals to the India palettes. Rather they seem to think that if they serve us what they serve the Americans, we will lap it up. Clearly, that isn't the case.

Left the place quite dissatisfied and I don't think I will be going there anytime soon.

Fabulous Thin Crust Pizza and Sauces

We went with family to their Lower Parel outlet and we tried a few starters and thin crust pizzas.

Their pizza was one of the best we've ever had. Starters were good and were served with a special selection of sauces which were excellent.

A special mention for their service - we had to leave for a show in 35 mins and we asked the staff if they could manage to get our food in time. True to their word, all our starters and pizzas were ready in 10 mins (without compromising on the quality) and once we were done with the food, the check was brought within a minute and we really appreciate their concern for our time.

Bye Bye! I will not see you again..

Going to CPK was an impulse decision. It has come up in Phoenix Mills Compound where the sports bars used to be once.
The Appetizer list sounded boring so we directly jumped to the pizza range. Being aware that they serve mostly non spicy ones, we ordered Chipotle Chicken. Even after sprinkling chilli flakes we found it bland. And that Salad style pizza did not tickle our taste buds. We also ordered for a eggplant pizza for our vegan freinds which was better.
It was a let down. Just to ensure we fill up our tummies we went for the pasta range and ordered Spaghetti bolognias - CRAP! Never has such a bad one. It was dry and couldnt relish on this.

We preferred not to have anything more and walked out of this place quietly.

On the ambience side, it is just a normal eat-out just like what pizza corner offers.

Looking forward to making your day again soon!

If this is a pizza, where's the cheese?

Based on the rave reviews I'd been hearing and reading about CPK, a friend and I decided to see for ourselves what the hype was all about. The decor and service are both excellent, but once you get to the food, it's all downhill from there. By the end of the meal, I was left pondering two possibilities - nobody I know has standards when it comes to food, or we just got plain unlucky on the day.

The meal started off on a sour note when we were given flat Pepsi after having asked for Coke. The Moroccan Salad and Adobe Chicken Chowder provided some form of redemption but that was short-lived. The Santa Fe Chicken pizza sounded interesting but it looked nothing like we thought it would, much less taste anything like it. The thin crust base tasted under-cooked, there were exactly two small pieces of grilled chicken on each slice and I had to strain my taste buds to look for a hint of cheese. We didn't even bother thinking about dessert.

A bout of food poisoning since the meal leaves no prizes for guessing one place I'll never be eating at again.

Please understand, we are Indians, and as a community we tend to appreciate stronger flavours and more cheese. I appreciate subtle, but not bland.

What Do You Think When you Think Pizza

What do you think when you think Pizza? No, seriously, give it a minute and imagine it. Can you taste the cheese, the tomato sauce, the basil and the oregano on top? Don’t you love that stringy cheese? Well, my pizza at California Pizza Kitchen was not that sort of pizza, so throw that montage out of the window. It is a Pizza kitchen, so let us talk about the pizza they serve, first. Don’t get me wrong the pizza was alright, but it is probably not the Pizza you just imagined. For more on that visit Foodietryingstein. The bread was just out of the oven, it smelled and tasted fresh and good. The tomato sauce was bright, yet subtle so as to not over power the other flavours on the pizza; so was the cheese, not to strong to overpower the other flavours. The flavours on this Pizza were married very well and not one of them dominated the others. Except the herbs, the fresh beautiful herbs, you could smell those fresh herbs, it was beautiful and it is what will win your heart in this place. To prevent myself from being seduced by cheese or pepperoni, I ordered a subtle vegetarian pizza. The New! (as mentioned on the menu card), Eggplant Pizza.

Forgettable pizza and pasta

Well my title says it all but let me elaborate. I am not usually a cynic and i dont like to criticize anything unless required. I went to CPK for the third time and this time also, the pizza was very average. Just because the crust is paper thin does not mean that the pizza becomes 'gourmet'. The ingredients are fresh yes, but where is the flavour? Personally i found the pizza too dry and even my friends kept asking for cheese to add more oomph to the pizza.
Now pasta arrabiatta....again, was DRY. I donno wat else to say. I am not saying the food is "bad" but for the kind of price i pay, i am not a happy customer.

Over hyped kitsch

Went there this afternoon for lunch since we hadnt tried out this place, and since we wanted to eat a pizza, what better than a place which states 'Pizza Kitchen'.

Decor is nice and the service attentive and in fact friendly. The service staff were attired for a lounge bar - all black, while this is more of a cafe, and should be more brightly dressed especially during the day. I guess, they carry on till dinner.

We thot of sharing a soup and ordered a broccoli soup - the portion was small, but okay for Rs. 125. What we never expected was that it would be so pathetic to taste. Generally, even better soups are served to people recovering from jaundice, and in hospitals. This was like boiled broccoli, run through a blender and served. Wish they had added some herbs, a drop of lime, some pepper and some salt. Yucks!!

We decided to quickly order a lemonade (Rs. 95) to wash it down - thankfully that was great.

Then we thought, lets attack a Thin Crust Pizza - we ordered the Spicy Cayenne Chicken Pizza (Rs. 395). It comes in 12 inch size. What we got was a flat bread, with characterless cheese, and sparsely dotted with tiny cubes of chicken, and we could almost count the strips of bell peppers that was there, and they were even stingy on the onions above the pizza sauce. This is like a cheap road side pizza, which is stingy on everything.

Someone before this wrote that it is just a big roomali roti - bang on. It is just a crisp roomali roti with some nice tasting sauce.

And we ordered a bottle of Kinley water (Rs. 50), while the Qua was Rs. 90 - cant figure out why such a large difference in price for simple bottled water.

Total bill including service charges (which is plugged into the bill) was Rs. 840. This for a medical soup, a sauced up roti, a lemonade and bottled water.

Am outta here!!!

Dear Andrea,
Thanks for the quick follow-up on this forum. Rather than contacting me, it would be better if the CPK management kept a close watch on the kitchen. A group that has given us Shiro & HRC can surely up their game on CPK. Btw, a big thumbs up to Shiro. :)

Lovely Place, Wonderful Pizza

Wanted to have pizza one evening and zeroed in on California Pizza Kitchen, Lower Parel for fulfilling my pizza craving. Called up the restaurant for a reservation, was promptly told on the phone that they accommodate people on a first come first serve basis and I would easily get a table. Since I rarely visit Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel; I literally had to be escorted till the restaurant. At the door I was told by a restaurant employee that there is a 10 minute waiting. I was lucky that night, was given a table inside 2 minutes.

Seated at a table towards the left hand side of the restaurant, I noticed a packed and noisy dining area. The brown colour based ambience was very easy on the eye, had a very casual and relaxed vibe. Brick wall finish was a nice touch. I liked the high ceiling with light yellow lighting. There was a slight problem with the seating arrangement; the couch placed towards the wall was a tad low while the chairs placed away from the wall were a tad high. One thing really annoyed me a lot on this visit to California Pizza Kitchen, a birthday party being celebrated in the restaurant played the happy birthday song on a number of occasions on loud volume, I was in no mood to forcibly participate in their celebration and would have preferred to have my pizza meal in peace and harmony. Well this incident aside; the waiter quickly brought us the menu card; I browsed through the menu looked at a number of salad, soup, specials options; but decided to fulfill my pizza craving and called for one.

First called for my favourite – Lemon Iced Tea; I would say it was decent, right amount of lemon, could do with a more potent infusion of tea, plus needed more ice; I have had worse iced tea in Mumbai, this one wasn’t too bad. Called for a BBQ Chicken Thin Crust Pizza with Smoked Bacon; deliciously sweet base sauce with a slight tangy nature topped off with lovely smoked bacon was a sheer delight; the chicken chunks could be marinated better; the gouda and mozzarella cheeses really blended in well with the pizza; in this preparation I loved the way the sauce, cheeses and the meats complimented each other; on the whole a must must have at California Pizza Kitchen; but it has a drawback they have to be more generous with their toppings.

I was really happy with the razor sharp service at this restaurant, attentive but unobtrusive. California Pizza Kitchen has a certain charm to it which is very pleasing. Pricing is moderately expensive, Lemon Iced Tea – Rs. 95, BBQ Chicken Thin Crust Pizza with Smoked Bacon – Rs. 445. The pizza I ordered was pure magic, but the Iced Tea was a bit of a letdown. I was furious with the ‘Sarvajanik’ birthday party celebration, but maybe it was a one off.

On the whole, I was happy with California Pizza Kitchen, Lower Parel. 4 stars from me.

Not more than once..

Hello reader,

Welcome to a "yet another pizza review"..

CPK (Lower Parel) sits next to some powerful competition (Spaghetti Kitchen and Indigo Deli). Owing to this, they dish out somewhat ok stuff, I believe.. :-)

The menu does not separately mark the vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes/offerings.. Someone who does not know what pepperoni really is, might land into trouble..

The place is truly pricey. The ambience is decent.. But you see mosquitos.. during lunchtime... that is scary.. the mosquitos that bite you during the day are supposed to be dangerous..

CPK levies a VAT of 12.5%, SC of 10% and something (that comes to some 3% of the menu price) called service tax. So you end up paying roughly 1.3 times the menu printed prices..

Tried their Garlic Cheese Focaccia with Checca (menu price Rs 180).. It was just about average.. the 'fresh'ness aspect of the food was somehow missing.. Thumbs down ..

Next came the thin crust Veg Pizza with Grilled Eggplant (menu price Rs 385).. One could only get traces of egg-plant.. the broccoli pieces were adequate, but were laid out straight from the cold storage.. (they call it cold topping !!) the concept is not appealsome.. Thumbs down ..

The staff is friendly/attentive.. sadly, that itself is not enough..

Final Rating
============
Ambience / Service - 6/10
Food - 4/10
VFM factor - 3/10
Overall rating - 4/10..

CPK's neighbors are anyday better, looks like..

Not Cheezy!!

Nice atmosphere, Great seating, well dressed Stewards.
Dry insipid Pizzas. Without a cocktail or aerated sodas it becomes difficult to swallow the Pizzas. They should really and quickly work on it. The name says California Pizza Kitchen. So their bestsellers (Pizzas) should not be the letdowns. Buck up guys this is India. We want more cheese and visually full stuffing.

This is how a pizza place ought to be!!!

It was a late Sunday lunch that forced me and my better half to go to CPK as we call it.
Indigo gave us a waiting for 45 minutes and so we decided to go here.
We started with a raspberry lemonade = Average. Had to ask for additional ice which was promptly given.
As entree we asked for the Any Two spring rolls. The superlative Mozzarella inside blew me away....
We ordered the California club and when it arrived I went a little cold... it was toped with lettuse.. almost like a salad...and guacamole
But when I bit into a peace... I went straight to appetite land..
The generous bits of bacon... and the perfect crisp of pizza.. and loads of green... Guiltless pizza as i termed it.
All this set us back by approx Rs 1,300/- after tax.
Totally worth it!!!

Good Food Place

I went to CPK on a Sunday afternoon for lunch after reading a review in the newspaper and quite liked the place. The stewardess was very helpful and guided us to the best on the menu based on our preferences in taste. As I did not not want anything spicy, hot or with a sweet flavoring, we opted for the Lime Chicken Tacos and the Goat Cheese Pizza.

The tacos were light and soft to eat with a stuffing of cabbage and lime flavored grilled chicken. The tacos came with crispy chips and roasted tomato salsa just like I had eaten during my trip to California. I liked the dish on the whole because the flavoring was just right.

The Goat Cheese pizza originally comes with bacon, but we requested for a change of meat to chicken and the bread base to thin crust. The pizza had fresh goat cheese, caramelized onions, peppers, parsley and a tomato base. The pizza was very good, though the only complaint we have is not enough chicken for the price charged (Rs. 495 for pizza + Rs. 100 extra for chicken).

The Peach Italian Soda went perfect with the meal.

On the whole I would suggest the place to others and definitely make a visit there again to try out their pastas, sandwiches and another pizza variety.

Wanted something quick and light. Had "Thai Crunch Salad" (veg) and loved it so much that, I may order it every time I visit CPK. As the place is pricey, the visit unfortunately can't be as often as one would like it!

Don't order the Pizza!!

I'd gone to CPK with very modest expectations, to begin with. The dinner started out pretty well, the service was good and the ambiance was comfortable. We ordered the chicken fingers (delicious) and the chicken pikatta (delicious as well).

Then it was time for the main course, the Pizza. This was my biggest disappointment at CPK. The Santa Fe pizza that we ordered was NOT a pizza. It was more like a hard rumali roti. No sauce, barely any cheese, few cubes of chicken strewn over it. Utter disappointment for a 500 buck pizza.

So if you're planning to visit California Pizza Kitchen, stay away from the Pizza part.

Pricey and non-authentic

Right after watching The Lincoln Lawyer at PVR Phoenix, we thought of grabbing some dinner and a friend recommended California Pizza Kitchen. Just before I get to the review, I really should express that it is a shame that The Sports Bar was closed down for some reason.

Ambience
Pretty well done. They have a Hard Rock Cafe style booths and you have an open-ish kitchen on the other end. The tables can get a little tight for some people and the tables are a little higher than you would expect. There is a separate section on the other end of the restaurant - I'm guessing that might be for private parties, etc. All-in-all, you might think of it as 'they have put some good thought and money in making this place up'. I think they have taken down Sports Bar and Cha Bar (a fashion pub, as they liked to call it) and replace it with a huge hall, now called CPK.

Food
It was just above average. They claim they have authentic California-style pizzas (which I disagree to since California does NOT have a specific style like Chicago's deep-dish and NYC's thin-crust) - Infact, they have Mexican style pizzas, I think I read Masala Pizza somewhere (Indian/Desi style) among the rest. We called for a Santa Fe chicken pizza (regular crust) and a Veggie pizza (regular crust). The Santa Fe pizza comes along with sour cream, guacamole and salsa. The sour cream was probably the highlight of the dressings. Pizza had coriander sprinkled and not more than 9 or 10 1cm * 1cm * 1cm chicken cubes, a good sprinkle of caramalized onions and cheese. The Veggie pizza had Broccoli (!!!), but my friends said it was good. The pizzas were 10" and I was really not happy with the size since you are paying around 500 bucks for a pizza here (6 slices). We then called for a Garlic Fettuccine pasta in white sauce and it was DRY! We called the waiter and asked him to make it a little saucy and he did. And that made it eatable, however, with a sprinkle of chilly flakes, oregano and Parmesan cheese, the bland-ness was taken care of as well. Pasta had 1 mushroom, 2 stalks of broccoli (!!!) and the fettuccine. The sauce was kinda nice though. Also, the apple soda that my friend called was pretty nice.

Service
B-A-D. We waited for 20 minutes to get the table cleaned after reminding 2 different waiters to get it cleaned. They seemed to be chit-chatting at the payment counter even after requesting for a menu. The food came in surprisingly quick considering they did not have much to cook anyways looking at the size of the proportions (yes, sarcasm).

Damages
A little more than what I would expect. A bill of 1900 bucks for 2 pizzas, 1 pasta and 3 beverages. Pizzas average at about 400-450 bucks and the pasta was about 550 (absolutely not worth the money). It would be understood if the bill was in the range of 1300-1500 bucks, but I guess they need to get back the money they spent on the interiors, right?

Would I go there again? - I don't think so
Would I go there with friends? - I don't think so
Would I go there with family? - NO

Manager needs to go

Even though the pizza are good at that price one could go anywhere in Mumbai and eat so here is where the other factors start playing a part like service ambience etc. Everything about the place is aesthetically good but the staff just don't know what is going on.why take such a big place if you can't handle it. New restaurants love turning away customers with a smile with a high handed attitude and completely unaccomidating. The manager tells us there was a 2 hr wait list at 3.30 pm when clearly tables were available when I pointed this out I was told minimum time for a pizza to be served is 1 hr which left us with no option to leave hungry. Visited this place before and the service was rubbish but pizza was. Good but now I don't think I'm going to waste my time going back. I feel bad for owners who are held ransom by bad staff after putting all the effort to make something good

World cup Finals @ CPK!

Like every Mumbai-ite who did not have ticket to watch the Match at Wankhede and did not wish to pay 6g @ Man U Cafe/3g @ TGIF/2.5 @ Hype for the screening, I kept looking around for a place where I could enjoy the first half of the match without having to empty my pockets completely. So as a last resort, I chose to view the screening over lunch at CPK.
We got there 1.30ish and managed to get a great spot right in front of the LCD. Points for comfortable seating. Service was relatively slow, but we didn't mind as we wanted to stay there quite long. We first ordered a spicy chicken starter, which was heavenly & went well with a cranberry breezer. Main course was the thin-crust spicy cayenne pizza. The crust was perfect but the toppings were too ordinary for my liking. Paneer and a few cayenne peppers don't make a pizza spicy. Infact, I was enjoying the raspberry flavored lemonade wayyyy-better!!
I do not agree with some of the reviews which state that its ridiculously expensive, because its not! 3 drinks, an appetizer and a pizza cost us about 1100/- (including service charge).
Also I appreciate the fact that that they let us enjoy our meal for really long (read 5 p.m), unlike other restaurants where the waiters are breathing down your neck.
Service-8/10
Ambience-8/10
Pricing-9/10

California Crap Kitchen !

First Time I did not enjoy a pizza ! It was just another Big name , Fancy place , pricey stuff type !

Ok would write nothing more about the interiors ! I don't believe in very classy dine in's which turn out to be shit in the end just like this place did . The place was Big...blah blah !

Ok two things - The pizza was bad + It was recommended by the waiter !
I went there with my boyfriend and we ordered a peach Ice tea and the California club Pizza . The Ice tea was average . For its price that is 120 rupees !
The pizza ! Hideous . It was topped with a hell lot of lettuce leaf and hardly few countable pieces of chicken and bacon and not at all cheesy ! And it was a loaded 520 rupee worth + 10% service charge and Government tax !!!

Total Damage for 1 pizza and an Ice tea = Something around 800 !! Big time Regret !

I would stick to good ol' Dominos ! Anytime better .

Be careful Veggie folks!

I was excited to visit CPK with my friends as my experience at the LA joint was excellent.
The ambiance is not too gaudy, yet impressive and spaced out.
The pizzas are deceptively priced at around 400-600 bucks as the 10% service tax is levied in the bill.
The size of the pizzas is disappointing when you compare it to the ones in the US and I was convinced that Pizzeria's position as the best tasting pizzas in Mumbai still remains unbeaten.
We were in for a rude shock when we were served chicken in one of our pizzas that we had ordered to be vegetarian!
The staff tried to contain us with a complementary piece of cake, but the damage was done. Clearly, they are novices with very little knowledge about service. The crass speaking Gajalee waiters at Vile Parle are way more efficient than them!
All in all, it was a bad experience and a lot of money gone to waste.

Latest at Phoenix

It’s always exciting when a new place opens at Phoenix.

Was here last Friday night for a dinner with friends. There was no listed number, so decided to go without making reservations. We thought we’d put our names on the waiting list when we got there and hang out at the mall. We reached early though (by 7pm) and yay, it wasn’t full. It’s a huge place with lots of seating. We sat in booth at the back.

Ambience: Plush and woody, yet not too fancy. Like a diner, but not too greasy :D It was fairly quiet when we got there… but became really really noisy as the evening progressed.

Food: We ordered Hummus for starters, a Pesto Pizza & a Creamy Garlic Fettucine for the mains and a Red Velvet cake for dessert. The food was awesome. Flavorful, cheesy and good-sized portions. The pizza was on a perfect thin crust, with really tasty pesto, topped with mushroom (they exchanged the cottage cheese with mushroom when we asked). The pasta was also yum and garlicky. The Red Velvet cake was huge… encased in white chocolate… but we were too stuffed to finish. The food was accompanied by a Corona and a Margarita.

Two minuses: The brought all the food together, and the drinks later. Also, as the place got more crowded it got harder to catch the waiters’ attention.
A total of 2.2k for all 1 starter, 2 mains, 1 dessert and 2 drinks (including VAT and “service charge”).

Overall, 4 stars for great food, decent ambience and about average service.

Very Enjoyable

One of the best things about this place is the seating; there's lots of it and the next would be the food! Well, whatever we ordered, except for the Broccoli soup, what was I thinking??! It tasted like pureed Broccoli! Bad! BUT I did enjoy the Sedona Corn Tortilla Soup even though my husband didn't.

I love pesto and my measuring grade at any restaurant serving pesto, starts with pesto and since this was my first time here, I had the Penne in Pesto and the menu did say that the pesto was Cashew Pesto so that's a new, always had only walnut pesto or Pine nut pesto. Must say that cashew pesto tasted the same as Pine nut pesto, was very good, but the show stealer for us was the pizza, we had an egg plant, red and yellow peppers and caramelised onions with Goat cheese pizza and it was absolutely delicious. Never had egg plant in a pizza before and must say that it worked really well.
Lastly, I would like to say that the service was very good. This did come as a surprise to me as I've come to accept the BAD service levels in Bombay. Thumbs Up to this place!

Overated!

They honestly need to change their service standards and quantity/quality of pizzas to survive here!

The Mushroom Pepporoni Sausage was above average, where as the Santa Fe was not only tasteless (without any salt) but with barely 10 small cubes of chicken on it and coriander and spots of caramalized onions - not worth the price AT ALL!

The bill took over 25 minutes to get, and 3 times of calling of it, all of it when the restaurant was empty!

Certainly, have lost out on 2 customers - a friend and me, who were there today evening!

The same taste -- and that's a great thing

Been a CPK regular for a long time when living in the U.S. Excited when I noticed the CPK @ Phoenix the other night when I was at dinner @ Veda. Checked it out today.
Tostada pizza: 95% as good as it can get. Then, they made up the other 100% by making a perfect thin & crispy crust. Thank you for listening to what we Indians love! :) Would've liked to taste the beans a bit more.

Sandwich: So-so.
- The cost is a bit high. I think touching Rs. 500 (+ txes) for a vegetarian pizza & Rs. 375 for a sandwich is a tad high, though yeah -- the pizzas are sized well.

The service is great too -- smiling and helpful.

Two cons:
- There is a new "hearts of Palm" sandwich which was very so-so.. I could barely taste the guac that was in it. For a warm sandwich, it was much too cold. And the flavor was just not quite there.
- I would like to see them maintain their "if you don't like anything, we'll find you something else you want at no cost" policy they have in the U.S. Get on it, CPK!

Excellent Pizzas!

We went to California pizza Kitchen on the first day of its opening at Phoenix Mills after walking out of obnoxious and snooty Veda at the Palladium, and we thanked our stars! Its situated on the first level of Phoenix Mills right next to Hamley's Toy store.

Looks tiny from outside, but within its large and pretty spacious. They have regular tables meant for 2-6 persons as well as comfy booths. We ordered a herb onion focaccia with tomatoes as the appetiser. The bread was warm and soft and the tomatoes were fresh and juicy!

Then ordered the tostada pizza (recommended by the staff) and it was divine with sour cream and salsa! The first couple of bites are hesitant but as you have more of the pizza, it literally grows on you! Its tastes just like a taco bell wrap on pizza!

We ordered a thick crust but you can order a thin crust too with an additional cost of Rs. 20 only!

Pizzas and beer makes the best combination but the bar unfortunately at present serves only wine at the moment (Rs. 300 per glass, Rs. 1500 per bottle plus taxes). Instead we called for a peach iced tea which was hlighly ok (tasted more of the ready made Lipton variety).

The staff is prompt and courteous and the food - fabulous! Cant wait to go back and try rest of the pizzas on the menu!

Whats the downer for the place? Since its on the upper level, you either have to climb a huge flight of stairs (30 odd) or use the escalator. After 8 pm, the escalator is turned off most of the times and is only for going up. So going to this place with olderly people/prams/wheel chairs cannot happen!
