Horrible Vegetarian Food
Went here for dinner with some colleagues. For the vegetarian starters, we called for sab seekh kebab on the managers recommendation which tasted horrible. It was uncooked, tasted pasty, raw and absolutely dry. We conveyed our disappointment to the manager who was kind enough to replace the dish with another. We called for another paneer preparation by the name of Bhatti ka Paneer which tasted equally horrible. The dish was marinated with too much of garam masala. For the non-vegetarian starter, a colleague of mine called for the Murgh Kalimirch which had excessive black pepper again. For the main course we called for a Murgh Dum Biryani which was decent enough but with excessive of spices. We called for 2 glasses of wine, 3 fresh lime sodas, 1 jaljeera and 1 iced tea - all of the above costing us 2400 INR and some complimentary Paan.
Go there if you really have the patience
After reading the reviews, I thought about trying this place for a buffet lunch. I had gone there with my office colleagues. Despite having made the booking in advance, manager refused to provide the table and we were made to wait. There was some confusion among the waiters and they ended up serving some non veg dishes to vegetarian people. While main course was ok (not that great for the price they charge), we realized that most deserts were finished before we could have it. We were left with a pineapple pastry. When we protested, they decided to give us some discount. This was bit awkward as we had gone there to enjoy a good nice meal and not for discounts. The staff was quite rude. We had given our car for valet parking. To my astonishment, the car was damaged while they returned it to me. Initially, the manager agreed to make some arrangement but refused to provide any compensation later on. It was the most horrible experience that I ever had at a restaurant in Mumbai. I won't recommend it to anyone. Food 2/5; Service 1/5; Ambience 2/5. Go there if you really have the patience.
Truely Fine Dining!
Trust me when I say I really know mughlai food as I hail from the land of chicken tikkas and butter chicken - Delhi. So far they have the best Chicken gravies I have tasted in Mumbai. To add to the lip-smacking food is the impeccable service their staff gives you. The ambience is great with lanterns, some nice Punjabi numbers in the background all setting the tone of the place. This place has been a great find for us as we absolutely enjoy the scrumptious meal they serve us every time we go alone or entertain guests there. Another fantastic aspect is that they take orders as late as 12:30 or so. So if you are craving for a great mughlai meal and dont mind paying the price for great taste and ambience- its a must visit.
Highly recommended for an outing
Was a bit hesitant to go to MIDC for a Sunday brunch...but Caravan Serai lives up to its name. It completely is insulated from the exterior and gives a perfect setting for a meal...lunch or dinner.
This place puts food at the heart of it....something you expect from a restaurant. Not only was the food lip smacking, the courteous staff made the experience even more memorable. The starters are just too good and live up to the expectations from an Indian starters perspective. Chicken, mutton, fish...all available. You have the drinks available too...but you wouldn't want to fill up yourself with fluids instead of the succulent meats.
Main course was one of the best i have seen. The chicken biryani was totally Mughlai style and made me forget desserts. If you do make it to the last stage and which you should, do try the Caramel Custard and Chocolate mousse.
It was a perfect setting for a Sunday brunch and a must visit with any set of people you want to have fun with.
A Gypsy Experience
I went to Caravan Serai for a long-pending birthday treat with my colleagues and I must say that it was worth the time spent looking for a treat venue. Caravan Serai stands for its name when it comes to the décor and ambience. The low light with a low seating pleased us all. The backrest of the seating was a wee-bit uncomfortable. However, the tables were just perfect in height and would get extra points from me. The ornamental drapes with their sequins, tassels, and glass embellishments shimmered in the dim lights. This gave a feeling of being in a gypsy caravan. Apart from the decorative pieces, I would like to mention about the brass glasses, which I found to be a nice change from the usual ones.
Coming to the taste buds, CS managed to please ours. However, I would not say the fare was exceptional as it seems when you read that it serves cuisine from the North-west frontier. All in all, everything that was served was good. We went for a buffet and had a 3-course meal with complimentary first glass of drinks. When it came to drinks, I can say that the one thing that was really exceptional was the buttermilk. It was well-prepared and perfectly flavoured.
I had mushrooms, paneer, prawns, chicken, and fish for starters, which were served to us at the table. While I had my fill of non-veg ones, the veggies were not left behind. I am not much of a paneer fan, but CS did make me happy with its paneer. It was tender and had a delicate silky taste. Amongst the non-veg, the prawns and Basa fish were good. However, it was the chicken which made it to the top with its succulence, just-appropriate spice, and a perfect bite size.
I ended up having a whole lot of starters and had to compromise on the main course as the desserts looked equally tempting. The Biryani and Chicken curry that I opted for was delicious. The colourful palate of desserts offered caramel custard, gulab jamuns, mithais, ice-cream, etc. The caramel custard was worth mentioning. I wished to have a second serving but the fruit-flavoured sweets looked mouth-watering.
The service, I and my colleagues would unanimously agree that it was slow. To sum it all, the time spent was good and memorable. Would surely want to visit again and go for more options on the menu.
Excellent Food, Quantity needs to improve...
Visited this place recently and it was the first time i had been here... I was pleasantly surprised at the taste of the food having not expected too much... everything that we ordered from starters to main course was yummy... the service was also very good and things came pretty fast from when we ordered... on the downside, the quantity of dishes was very less and we had to order additional dishes to make up for the quantity... the price also was on the higher side... the food however made up for the quantity... suggestions - please improve the quantity of food you serve...
Buffet Lunch - Pay for 3 - Dine for 4
Been here 3 days ago...on a weekday. While we were settling down - the Captain informed us whether we would want us to try out their Buffet as we were 4 girls...& we cud pay for 3. Well wise choice it was - unlimited starters. The fish tikka was excellently flavoured & fresh. All the Kebabs were very good & fresh. Had an over-wholesome lunch. Desserts had a decent spread. The Caramel Custard was awesome.
Good service - good choices suggested by the Captain.
Chill out dinning place!
Welcome and refreshing change to see a reputed restaurant like Caravan Serai, Red Ant & Red Box opening in the MIDC area which was predominately fan base of Tunga hotels.
However ,overall the interiors and comfort low seating is excellent. Dim lit ambiance and bit noisy. The staff is very friendly and takes good care of the guests. Valet car parking available.
We ordered the Non Veg Platter (small) and the quantity was filling. The quality was as per our expectations, so we kinda liked most of the kebabs placed in it. It was accompanied by chilled beer.
For main course we have ordered Dum Ghost and Dum Biriyani as suggested by the staff. The staffs are really helpful and informative. The order took really long time but the wait was worth.Price wise okay.
Awesome Ambience Mediocre Food
There comes one of those days where chickenlover has to go a restaurant and eat VEG food :( The other day I went to Caravan Serai with my family to celebrate my Dad's birthday, And as soon as you walk into the restaurant you fall in love with the ambience of this place. The day we had went the whole place was empty and very silent and peaceful. So since I was going there for the first time I had huge expectations with the food. But I am sorry to say each and everything I had that day was a complete disappointment. The starters, the Main course... All tasted strictly okay. I have never ever come across a place which makes Paneer taste bad but as Munnabhai says life mein sabka first time hota hai. Anyways I would go once again to have their non veg food then decide on its future. Anyways the staff and the Manager provide good service.
Service is not great. Food is okay. Servers do not recommend any Dishes. Tried their special Turrah Naan which was more like Guitar-shaped Naan. Decent sized Naan for 3 people atleast. Mutton Rogangosh was just about okay. The seating arrangement with the backrest are not good at all.
Good Ambience and food a Mix Bag
Love the Experience at China gate Last week and decide to go to Caravan Serai this Week on 18th Evening and found the place Almost Empty except for 2 occupied tables , but it was a bit of Let down in Terms of Quality of service ...Like we asked the Captain ,what is ur specality, got a answer all our dishes are special, Not expected from this level of Restaurant, Secondly we ordered Mutton Sheekh Kababs which was good, and ordered a Prawn starter, which was served luke warm.............And for the main course we order Mutton Rogangosh which again was average in terms of texture and flavour but the best was the Dal Bukhara ..which was truly outstanding ....and for deserts we ordered Moondal halwa and rubdi...both of which were yummy and left a good taste in your mouth.........as i said ...a mixed bad Experience and found the place more expensive compared to the next door China Gate
Caravan Serai - Good Food in a nice Ambience!
Tried Caravan Serai at their MIDC Branch and it was definitiely a welcoming and a refreshing change from the usual well established restaurants around MIDC and its vicinity..First impression was WOW!.Good use of space at a relatively new and Hi-tech commerical building in Akruti Star! The management has four of their restaurant chains operating from the grounf floor..Caravan Serai is seperated from RED BOX and RED ANT cafe with a different entry point..Now about caravan serai, the starters we ordered was a lamb and chicken chef's recommended special and it wasnt bad..Good taste, well cooked but the portions were a little less for a total of 4 of us..Then came the main cource,Big and ample portions and was tasty. It was hot and could have been better with a little less spice but to suffice.it was a good and a hearty meal!.I especially loved the indian bread selection,it was scrumptious and tasty. All of this in a cozy and classy looking ambience!..Will definitely recommend this to any one looking for a change from the mundane type of dining around here..
