Left a bad taste in the mouth
Had gone to China gate with our office group for the Lunch Buffet and we were left v disappointed.
The Non Veg starters as expected were mostly good but then the prawn starter was soaked and deep fried .
There were insufficient starters for our veg colleagues though will say that we all did enjoy the corn starter.
On to the main course- it felt like we were having the starters all over again expect for a couple of dishes.
Finally the desserts, this is what was most disappointing, firstly its in an enclosed area and you need to stand in a line for a scoop of icecream with couple of waiters serving it... the icecream was of a poor quality and the cakes, and couple of other desserts were well below the mark.
Its not a place I would recommend or want to visit again.
one of my favorites
China Gate has always been my first preference whenever Mom and I thought of having a lunch buffet. What I love about this place is the variety of chinese appetizers we get to eat. Every time I've gone here, I've gone on a Saturday and I've never ordered from the a la carte menu.
The fish soup is to die for, extremely tasty! Do try the crispy stir fried corn and the chicken and prawn dumplings.
The service might seem a little slow and at times there has been communication problems with the waiters too. Apart from that no problem as such.
They have a wide dessert spread. Their pastries are amazing!
Went for dinner last Sunday and loved the new redesigned setting as well as the new menu. The fragrant fried prawns were yummy, love the beef oyster chilly and the other dishes we ate. So happy that you have introduced beef in the menu. Would like it if you also introduce pork. Chinese food is incomplete without either these and Indians are starting to like both these as well. Keep it up, cheers.
I was really surprised to read so many negative reviews about this place, as I have visited it 4-5 times with different large groups and EVERYONE has absolutely loved it. Its worth taking a 2 hour trek from colaba to andheri for this outstanding chinese buffet for an astonishing 600-700 bucks a head !
16 starters, complimentary wine/beer/ soft drinks (1 glass per head) and the most amazing main course and desserts makes this one of the best places to visit. You just have to try it out for yourself and allow the food to do the talking.
Their preparation of fish is just brilliant. Their momos are amongst the best I have eaten - both the vegetarian and non Vegetarian ones (especially the prawns)
Can't wait to go again!
Be Careful- Worms in Food
Be Careful about what you eat at this place.... Look twice into the food you put in your mouth. I went to this place today and ordered Ginger & Capsicum Fried Rice and the first bite i take to put in my mouth and a earth worm comes crawling out of my rice....
Even after complaining to the manager of the restaurant they were least bothered as if it was a daily occurrence!!!!
My advise to one and all..... Dont go there if you dont want worms in your food and if you go.... Plz pay attention to what you are eating!!!!!
Good Place though Expensive on the Pocket
China Gate is one of the good places for authentic chinese food. They offer a large variety of chinese dishes. The place is very well made and has very good ambiance. The staff is very good and helpful. One of those fine dining places for going out with clients or business associates. The food is good if you like authentic chinese. Though the food is priced on the expensive side. Still worth a visit. I suggest to try the Thread Paneer Starter.
The Usual Place
This is one place I love to go again and again.
Crispy Chicken with spinach is a must try. Also the chocolate mousse.
This one is definitely more "roomy" than the one in bandra. The staff is well trained and experienced, service is great. They even allow you to bring your own bottle of booze (if you are a regular).
Cost-wise it cannot be called cheap, but it definitely is cheaper than other "classy" chinese restaurants in and around Andheri (or Bandra).
Must try, I would recommend this place.
Bad expereince while Dining on 12 May 2013
I went to celebrate my wife's bday & were in by 9.15 pm. Till 9.50 no-one showed up for order. Waiters were running around like headless chickes..on my request the manager showed up and got our drinks & starter order.. but when I said that I will not pay the mandatory service charge - he said its built in. The were no napkins, food came in late.. and all around there was a sense that no one seems to be in charge. The service tables were stacked with used plates.. and amongst them are the new orders (food to be served) kept. Bad hygiene & no training. When I asked the Manager for the email id of the head of China Gate - Mr. Krishna, I was given a wrong id- and predictably the complaint email bounced. This is dishonesty along with bad service.
on the top 10 chinese
this place is certainly in the top 10 places for chinese in mumbai.
must have their water chestnut starter.
the prices are reasonable. i spent 1400 for 2.
i wouldnt say its 100% authentic chinese, but we indians like it that way.
amazing service and ambiance. good place for family dinners.
Not very tasty!
I have heard a lot about this place and wanted to eat tasty chinese food that I have been searching from a long time. But I did not find anything extraordinary about it, it was just about average.
It was a home delivery. I had ordered veg fried rice, chicken hakka noodles, chicken chilli gravy and chicken manchow soup.
I liked the quality of rice, long and well cooked, so were the noodles. But as far as the taste was concerned, it was bland.
The gravy was not spicy, in fact it was sour. There was no other taste to it(even salt was missing), which spoiled the complete taste of my food, since chicken chilli gravy was the main element to go with my fried rice and noodles.
The soup was good. The fried noodles with manchow soup were of good quality, they were not oily but crisp and dry.
Quantity wise all dishes are fine. Also, the prices are fine compared to other restaurants of the same standards.
I would suggest to China Gate team that they make their food delicious, because as consumer and foodie, its the taste that matters the most. I found your food lacking in spice and taste. I coundt enjoy the food much and it wasnt upto my expectations
Quality wise thumbs up!
But please work on the other equally important factors. Since No Food without Taste is Good Food!!!!
no apology - a month later
I ordered a take away last month - even wrote a review about it. China Gate know who I am and have still not had the courtesy to apologise, even on this forum, for giving me non-veg food when i ordered veg (I am a strict veg). What a disgusting place and disgusting attitiude.
Absolutely Brilliant (Yet again!)
This was our 3rd visit to China Gate Andheri for their Sunday lunch Buffet. We love this buffet for its huge spread, dishing out a complimentary drink (Beer/Wine/Soft drinks), soup, 16 starters (8 veg and 8 non veg) and then the main course and desserts if you possibily can. This time too the food did not disappoint.
We had 4 vegetarians and 5 non vegetarians and all agreed that we were spoilt for choice. In veg starters we had spinach dimsums, cheese dimsums, veg spring rolls, spicy potatoes, crispy corn, tangy paneer, and an eggplant dish. The dimsums, potatoes and corn were brilliant.
For the non veg, we also had prawn dimsums, chicken dimsums, fried prawns, an oustanding fish in brown sauce, fried chicken wings, and a soft chicken dish in a pepper sauce. The Prawn dimsums were a huge hit.
For the mains, very few of us could have the Thai curry, crabs and salads. We didn't touch the other food as we were stuffed with the starters. The desserts too were good - crispy honey noodles were our favorite, while the brownies with chocolate sauce and icecream was a close second.
The service at this place was absolutely brilliant. We never had to ask for a single refill, and 4 attentive servers made us feel like royalty. All this for under Rs. 700/- is an absolute steal. No wonder we're happily willing to make it to China Gate all the way from South Mumbai. 5 stars for the best chinese buffet in Mumbai.
P.S. I've read alot of negative comments about this place on this website and I can vouch that I've been here 3 times in the last 8-9 months and none of my family/ friends have ever complained about the quality of the food. Go try it for yourself, if you enjoy CG83, Thai Pavillion, you will definately enjoy this food.
Will never go again
I ordered vwegetarian food from here and specifically told them not to make it spicy - they did so but were gracious enough to change it. However in the process they delivered a non veg dish which I ate not realising it was chicken - i thought it was tofu. When I realised i was so upset as I am a strict vegetarian. I phoned up and the manager mumbled an apology. He didn't even have the courtesy to aplogise later and just sent some indifferent delivery guy to pick it up - I only live next door and it is against my religion to eat meat and I have NEVER eaten meat before. It has been 4 days and they haven't even had the decency to call and apologise. A very callous attitude. I shall never order from here again.
went there last week...and guess what in the packed restaurant we had a surprise visitor...a big fat rat...so in my review i just cant talk about either the food or the ambience...coz the rat takes the cake...and the best part is when i brought this to the notice of the staff, all they did was smile..and that was an all-knowing smile..like they were fully aware of the rat's presence ( not sure if therz only one or many)...me definitely not going there again....my sincere request to the management - please pull up your socks and do the needful...before its too late
I had gone 2 dis place last weekend wid my frnds.....currently 7 outta d 9 ppl have had a bad stomach infection...i dnt really understand wen ur shelling out dis kinda money wats d food worth...a grand wortha of stomach infection coz d place is jst not hygienic enuf mayb whr the food is cooked... and obviously wen 7 outta d 9ppl here have all had it & to top it have even vomitted to add to all d woes...mayb ppl shuld really thk if dey wanna try dis place out in future...
Very ill behaved staff
Had a very bad experience on the service front today. Never going back. What rude staff! We did complain to the manager , who was polite and apologetic- unfortunately, the damage was done.
June 4, 2012response from management at China Gate:
We are extremely sorry for our staff's behaviour, will definitely take it seriously and work on it,and would be delighted if u give us one more chance to serve you better.
Try the Lunch Buffet
There were some interesting and unique items on the dessert buffet. Apart from Ice Cream, brownie and honey noodles there were crispy pancakes stuffed with date mixture. It is the little rectangular piece at bottom of the plate. The best part was that the desserts werent too sweet.
Why China Gate has a buffet with a difference? It gives a Ala Carte quality food even in its buffet spread.

It is really delightful to hear that you were pleased with our food & service. Our success is due to patrons of your likes who appreciate our hard-work and encourage us to continue our work with full commitment. If you have liked China Gate, do try out our new restaurants Hometown Cafe & Bora Bora as well. We will be eager to hear what you have to say about them.
March 15, 2012response from management at China Gate:
Hi, Thanks. just wanted to know the Lunch Buffet charges for Saturdays and Sundays. Could you also tell me how many starters do you serve? I was told there are 16. Also, wanted to point out that your staff was impolite on the phone. Just spoke to them 5 minutes ago to check the same and he started speaking to someone on the other line for several minutes without putting me on hold. Anyway, I just needed the following info since I intend to visit again soon.
March 15, 2012response from management at China Gate:
Hey sorry for the inconvenience. Shall check on it and rectify the same. The buffet rate is Rs.603(inclusive of tax). We serve 16 starters (8 veg. & 8 non-veg.)
Quality Food! Yummy Seafood!
It was a pre-valentine lunch on Monday afternoon, felt more romantic because it was unexpected and an adorable gesture by A. No, I didnt pay that bill but I was still excited by how much food they fit in under 500 bucks per person with good service and good ambience. This Chinese fine-dining restaurant has an interesting wine list. The buffet included a complimentary glass of wine. We got our privacy and it was a quiet, pleasant lunch at China Gate. It was a quick yet extravagant meal. It was a buffet with Ala carte quality food. For more info visit foodietryingstien.
You know that rush a woman gets when she sees a sale? Its probably same as how a man would feel if India won the cricket match. I loved the lunch buffet at China Gate. Actually, I wasnt sure whether I enjoyed the eating more or paying that bill. Well, I should say I was pretty happy to pay the bill but I absolutely adored the eating part. Some Belly-filling and delectable food squeezed between work on a Monday is a delight. More so buffets are delightful because it is good value for your money, especially for big-eaters like me. A wide variety of good tasting food; this buffet did not compromise Quality for Quantity. For a woman, this meal would be like walking into a store with 70% sale.
I really had a very very bad experience at the China Gate... i had been to this place twice. From my first experience it seemed a decent place, so tried the second time. But this time it was pathetic. I went with a friend for lunch. There was a buffet available and it seemed quite costly so we thought to order ala carte. But the waiter was trying to force us to have buffet and said it would take very long for ala carte. In spite of that we ordered. the food came much later than told by these guys.To add to the frustration was the taste, it was pathetic.
Then cam another shock, we had ordered mix of chicken fried rice and prawn fried rice, and the billed price was more than the addition of half of both. we asked them, but they said thats the way it is, if u order a mix. we felt like being cheated as they should have told it before taking the orders. Anyways, we paid and came back, never to visit that place again...
Its a NEVER GO TO... place
the food was disgusting
the worst chinese food that i would have ever had...
the honey crispy lamb was like fried lamb with honey lumped at the base of the container and the dish would probably not even been called chinese, it tasted that bad..
the shanghai noodle rice combination is a disaster. The chefs in shanghai would be probably turning in their graves or wanting to get into one...
the chilli garlic chicken dish, or whatever they'd like to call it, (the taste would change).........most terrbile/aweful/pathetic.............................................
so people if u love your stomach and pallates and taste buds and appetite.......u know which chinese place not to go to...........................ever.................
amazing is just the word...
Perfect place for a cosy dinner date...!!
overall rating : 9/10
MUST TRY;S : lemon iced tea ,chinese tea
fried wantons , thread paneer ,
budha's delight , ginger & capsicum fried rice ,
corn & mushroom fried rice ...and the list goes on..!!
The much awaited buffet didnt stand the high expectations...though...!!
tip : A reservation made in advance helps..!! if u wana avoid the waiting in the "Q"...
I have been here atleast 5 times already.
Price: slightly on the higher side. But really worth it.
The service makes you feel special and the food is very tasty. My two year old daughter enjoys the food here and that for me makes this place top notch.
Those who have not tried this place, need to visit atleast once.

been to the buffet on saturday... really very good for 450 bucks with unlimited beverage and seafood
the menu had tiger prawns and crab, squid etc... really good lemon grass rice with chicken pot curry, momos , tempura ... and a good variethy of desserts ... global fusion is definetely better because the number of items and starters are more ... here the main course is better, good soup but i could see the shocked expressions of the waiters when i was loading tiger prawns onto my plate... so sorry honeys im not those vegetarians who gets full on noodles.... eat well get your moneys worth here
Ambiance-excellent,Food- very bland.
Been to this place quite a few times when we run out of options and feel like eating authentic Chinese food. Most of the days of the week its fairly occupied by 9pm.i personally don't enjoy the bland tastes of the soups or starters or momos or any of the rice and curries. they just taste plain weird. of course the ambiance and the service is fantastic. but sometimes maybe they should add a little more flavor as the Indian palettes are used to that spicy-ness.otherwise i prefer going to the red box or mainland china which is fairly authentic and also has the indian-ness to it.crab soups, and regular ones .starters almost we have tried all..group of 8,racked up a bill of Rs 8000/- which does not include desserts or alcohol.Go there for the experience.
I had heard abt dis place a lot frm my frnds who have been here....
I went with my wife for dinner here....
The place: -It shares d same entrance wid red box...
It is a 3 storey rest...d place is decent enough...But,the crowd is pathetic...lots of noise as the tables are very close to one another...very disgusting and awkward at times as its 2 close...
The food: - the food was good...we ordered some noodle soup, tofu starters which was only tofu no veggies, main course was lotus leaf rice which was average and sad exotic veggies...
The service: - The most pathetic service.I asked the manager to serve green tea(which is complimentary in every chinese rest)...and it came aftr 10 min....which was awful....Other then that the manager tried to be kind enough bt was faking it...d service was pathetic...d food takes at least 20-25 min for arrival...lolz....
Go at ur own risk....
China Gate -
We went in late afternoon for lunch. There was no waiting - being lunch time on a weekday. We chose a table facing the road. Ambience is good. The entrance looks really nice.
Service was fine throughout.
Food was average - a vegeterian wouldn't comment more. I had non-veg guests with me who tried prawns and were satisfied.
Damage 2500 - for 6 people
Worst Service in Andheri
Although the food is good, China Gate's (Andheri) service quality is extremely poor, probably worst in Andheri.. We were having a good time there in a Sunday afternoon and got slightly delayed.. They not only switched off the AC, but even switched off most of their lights also... Extremely indifferent behavior of waiters .. I will never like to go there.. Mainland China or Aromas of China are anytime better ..
Excellent Chinese food....
Amazing food....very tasty..never eaten before...
best noodles: Coriander noodles
best rice: Black Mushrom Pot rice (try only if you like black mushrooms) Only restuant so far serving you Whole black mushroom..(not in pieces.excellent)
Chicken is amazing...
Cost should not be a problem....as they have some lovely road view table..
quantity & quality of food is execellent...
10/10..for china gate..
Best Chinese food..
I recently visited China Gate this Sunday. Though I have been there couple of times before.
One has to go to China Gate if you want to have Chinese food. Being a vegetarian. First of all they have have a good variety of both veg & non-veg lovers unlike other chinese restaurants whose main preference is non-veg.
Both the restaurants are huge with numerous tables but you might not get a table on Sat & Sun. So, start early.
On the starters, I dont miss the crispy thread paneer, they are the best.
Moving on the main course I prefer schezwan noodles and I tried this time the Paneer in deul sauce and it was worth every money.
The portions are filling unlike 5 Spice which gives portions that either you have a big stomach or you have to pack it for home.
The ambience and the staff is courteous too with air-contioned too powerful for the guys who wants to take their girlfriends for chinese at China Gate, kindly tell them to carry a shawl or jacket as they feel cold most of the times.
On the whole, a very nice experience every time I visit.
Soapy noodles and gooey vegetables
After watching a great movie at Fun Republic, we decided to hit the China Gate nearby for a quick Sunday lunch. We decided on steamed veg suimai, veg talumein soup and a veg clear soup. The clear soup was excellent with some chinese greens and celery. The talumein was high on vinegar and a sweetish taste that didn't score with me.
The steamed suimai, while they were delicate and filled with veggies, the raw corn flour that the vegetables were coated with, were sticking to the mouth, spoiling the experience. I find it quite funny that every so called Chinese restaurant in Bombay finds its own versions of 'Chinese' sauces to go with the starters. This one had finely chopped coriander in sugar syrup - and a bhel kind of tamarind chutney which would be enough to throw a real Chinese chef into fits.
The main course consisted of coriander pot noodles, which looked highly appetizing and green, with lots of green vegetables, but one fork down and i realized that something was just not right with them. The noodles were overdone and gloopy, plus tons of baking soda added to the dish to retain the green -ness of the coriander sauce and the green vegetables. We all know the secret of a pinch of soda to retain the colour of greens, but please don't use soda as the main ingredient! I came here for food not for cleansing my stomach with soap! The mixed vegetables were in another corn-starchy red sauce that the server highly recommended, leading me to think it would be one of their specialties. Sadly, it was just another sauce that i wrote about earlier....lots of red chilli powder, minced garlic and cornstarch.
This along with a couple of fresh limes came to 1000 bucks. It has been a while that i felt so ripped off for eating poor quality food and thought of all the fresh ingredients I could have bought for that sum.
Anyway, lesson learnt, we wont be going back.
Service was ok and another negative is that the non smokers have no choice, the whole restaurant is open to smokers, so be ready to inhale the smoke if you go here.
I would have given this place one star but the extra star is for the good clear soup.
Like most 'Chinese restaurants' in India, this place too was disappointing in that the cuisine really isn't authentic. That's a huge dampener considering it costs so much and that most of their outlets have prime locations.
This three level restaurant can seat at least 100 people at a time comfortably. The seating and decor is pleasant and the washrooms are surprisingly well maintained. However, the staff and waiters aren't well-versed with the Chinese palates and can't do a thing for you if you're looking at customizing a dish.
You may want to avoid the crab here. At least it wasn't great the time I tried it. What you'll probably like is the Thai prawn curry and steamed rice (But then again you can't go too wrong with that).
I agree, not up to the mark...
I think this place is like some of our bollywood's OVERLY hyped actress...
I know for sure, red box is good, caravan serai is good too, and even china gate (bandra) is better.
But this andheri branch is even worst than the road side Chinese stall...then WHY PAY MORE ?
Why is chinese and Italian food in India so expensive??
- when all you need are some boiled veg's and processed cheese to cook these 2 cuisines.
I totally agree with the below review about "broken glass",...Ask me... I had the same experience in J. W. Marriott (juhu)... the manager nor the staff bothered to say "sorry"... they took the glass away... and gave us a fresh glass.. (did not replenish the bottled water, which was paid for).
I had visited China Gate-Andheri on the 2nd with my family and friends for dinner. The palce was packed to the gills as usual..Lucky to get a place quickly...Did not know what was in store for us.....We were attended exactly 20 minutes later, when we placed our drinks order, they took ages to serve. The snacks arrived even before the drinks.
Finally when we had just settled down, comes the next bombshell...My Sister-in Law who was having a Cola, happend to chew something resembling an ice piece,,turns out to be a chunk of glass....Man that was absolutely shocking, and more worse was the attitude of the staff and managers...That was ultimate, they took it as casually as possible as if it is something which is not out of ordinary...The Manager,Mr.Dusmanta did not have the courtesy to even come and apologise...Not wanting to make ahue and cry we paid the bill and walked out.Even after calling their so called MD/GM,Mr.Mahesh, I have still to here from them..This is the kind of treatment being given to regular visitors to their so called reataurants.......NEVER EVER.....
best china gate so far
A rare trip to the suburbs, i had some guests down from London and i thought id take em out for some Indian Chinese.
China Gate is a large restaurant tastefully done up with decent service. The food itself was pretty good, the sui mai dumplings, the onion pancakes, the schezuan noodles, the pot rice. All good stuff.
No drinks, just appetizers and main courses set us back bout 2400 for 5 which is pretty good vfm.
It is def the best China Gate of the lot.
Packed every night!
Wow. This place is seriously full-house every night! Andheri needed this.
China Gate which also has branches in Bandra and Worli Atria Mall, is doing quite well. The setting is elegant Chinese, with Chinese sculptures, vases, and that typical fancy Chinese rosewood chairs. The food is good, but not better than either the Bandra or the Worli outlets. The part that I was most disappointed with was that the chicken was not cleaned properly of tendons. Thai chicken skewers as a starter are good. The coriander pot noodles are fantastic and full of fresh vegetables.
All in all, the place has good food, but is just a notch below it's counterparts.
Bandra one is better!!
The China Gate in Bandra is obviously better than this location, although they did manage to get the same things on the menu but not the complete taste from Bandra(chinga gate). This place really needs a lift because its 3 stories high and i had to meet some friends on the 3rd floor, talk about getting tired.. phew!!! The service was good and food was ok - nothing great to have a China Gate in Andheri - if it just remained in Bandra it would be more exclusive.. But China Gate is the best Chinese food in town if you really care about the food!!! nothing beats the food!
