Extended college canteen!
It was reunion time for the group as a close friend had come down from New York. Her conditions for selection of the dinner venue were precise:
1. Strictly junk food Pav bhaji, dosa, uttapa types
2. Around Dadar
3. If possible, near the station
Although Dadar and Matunga have many other good restaurants, based on the conditions set up by our NRI friend, DPs seemed as the best option! Ive been to DPs before and there is no doubt that they are good with street food be it Chaat, or South Indian or Chinese. DPs is at around 10 mins walking distance from Dadar(east) station as well as Matunga (Central) station. Mind you, Matunga Central and not Matunga of Western railway. Both stations are very much different and I make this very clear because much confusion has been caused in the past because of the non-clarity in names.
Our dinner plan was made and we met at DPs around 8.30pm last Friday night. The place was not too crowded (although was more than 50% full) and our group got 2 tables almost immediately. There was nothing much to browse through in the menu as the food was almost pre-decided. Orders were immediately placed and then we comfortably began our never-ending banter.
Within no time the first course arrived Sada dosa, Masala Dosa, Pav Bhaji, Masala Pav. All of this was well made. Suffient Bhaji is provided, so two extra pavs are a must with every plate of Pav Bhaji. Second course was no less different More Pav bhaji, simple veg pizza, masala Uttapa, Idlis and Thumsup. Food is certainly not extra-ordinary but nevertheless, very enjoyable. There were a few friends who joined in late and had to be content with filter coffee and Sada dosa as we were almost nearing the end of our meal. Although we were stuffed, my friend and I (both Chaat lovers) decided to order a plate of Dahi Batata Puri towards the end. That too was really delicious; so much that we had to order another plate as 6 puris in one plate did not prove to be enough.
DPs is an awesome pure veg hang out joint, surely for the Ruia collegians and even for people like us who had specially come here to enjoy a good meal at very moderate prices. Theirs is a large place with outdoor seating arrangement as well. You need to be very sure of what you want to order otherwise the extensive menu at DPs will surely leave you confused! The reunion was wonderful, our friend from NY was happy and it was decided that when she would come down next, we would meet to eat only such type of food and if no better option came out by then, it would be DPs again!
Uhmmm.. okay okay! not great!
The ambience is not at all great and neither are the waiters. Cleanliness is far away and the waiting time can annoy you. But what matters to us foodie's is the FOOD, and its pretty nice here. Especially the parathas, OMG.. divine parathas. The Chinese is not bad too. Try it!
I am an ex-podarite so obviously it is visited frequently. A very nice hotel having expertise in all the things. I specially like masala pav and Chinese bhel. The butter idli and dosas are also too good.I have good memories with my friends. All the items offered are yummy and tasty. If I pass by I make it a point to come here.
I had been to the place quite a few times... Their food is awesome tantalising the taste bud...especially their parathas and masala pav....The chole served with the parathas is the best....it reminds me of being at delhi....Even the tea served by them is good....The place is located near the college and has mostly college crowd hanging around the resto....it is also famous for fruit beer...
Good Thai Food
Sitting at home with my uncle on an evening 2 days ago, I was thinking about dinner. My mind started listing and rejecting restaurants / eateries around my residence. I was in no mood to drive so it had to a home delivery place.
My mind zeroed on WOK HEI, which is at DP's Matunga. My uncle left the choice to me order.
So I picked up the phone and
Me: Hello, Annna... 1 Green Thai Curry & 1 Steam Rice
Annna: Aur kuch????
Me: [Was in two minds to order a starter] Nahi...
Annna: 30 mins mein aayega
What luck I didn't order the starter, the quantity that we got was good enough for 3 people to full capacity.
The Green Thai Curry was out of the world, nicely cooked, rightly spiced. The whiff of the aroma left a waterfall in my mouth. I ate to my heart's and stomach's content.
Damages: Rs. 385 for 2; actually the quantity is for 3 people, hence for 3 the cost is Rs.128 per head.
Thai Food is good but for even better variety try the Lower Parel outlet.
No more a Landmark!
DP's used to be a landmark in Matunga, but not anymore. The place has deteriorated and how! Service has become tacky. Staff has changed and the present bunch don't seem to care about anything at all. The last time I visited for a quick grub was really my last time.
I haven't experienced the high-handed behavior of the servers myself but did happen to witness a commotion at the adjacent table. A mother and daughter found ants stuck to the buttered pav of pav bhaji. However initially the server refused to accept there was anything wrong and told them that ants must have crawled in at the table. How ridiculous! After much showdown, he took the pav and simply dusted it and got it back. The best part here was the mother-daughter duo and I actually saw him do that. Simply Horrible!
The grilled sandwich I ordered had stale veggies and the chinese food is way too oily for my palate. Prices have increased without equivalent service or quality. Quantity has got meager too. So I have vowed to never return.
Nothing SPECIAL about it
I dont know why people like Pav Bhaji over here.. its strictly OK.
Dont order for a paratha, they get from DELHI NCR i guess... it takes ages for the paratha to arrive at ur table
What i liked about this corner side Udipi style hotel is their Thai and Chinese menu. Good chinese food and Out of the World THAI POT RICE.
Being a true connoisseur of food, I liked the coconut based gravy, basil leaves and broccoli in the pot rice. Proper thai preparation.
If i were to rate only on the chinese and thai menu i would have given it 4/5 but overall its 3/5
Njoyed fast food
I been here in November saturday morning for breakfast. Nice place were you can have good fast food. The food quality was good. We ordered
Masala pav: very gud.
Cheese Rava Sada Dosa: gud
Tomato Omelette: gud
Cheese Burger: okie dokie
Sitafal Milkshake: must try, i loved it.
All together would say "Value for money". Won't disappoint you.
Yesterday we ordered Pan Fried Noodles, BBQ Paneer and DPs Special Pizza. I regret to say that I have never eaten such horrible and tasteless food ever. The Pan fried noodles was dripping with oil which would make a high cholesterol person have an attack. It was also very hard and the gravy served with that was so bland and tasteless that you wonder whether it was cooked by some professional. The pizza was very sweet and not up to the standard. So for us no more ordering from DPs
Pav Bhaji Masala Pav And Fruit Beer
If you haven't tried Pavbhaji and Masala Pav at DP's, then you have no idea what you missing out on. And cheese pav bhaji would be like Icing on the Cake i cant think of any other drink then Fruit beer to quench my thirst whenever im in an around DPs. I dont think i have had Fruit Beer that tastes better than DP's. Pav Bhaji and FuitBeer is a kickass combination.......Cheers
Folks have been visiting this place since last 3 to 4 years and have tasted mostly every single menu here. However if you are just passing by this place its highly recommendable to have a Pav Bhaji, Masala Pav, Schezwan Dosa, fruit beer, lakhnavi chat, stuf paratas and veg thai food.
Heavenly food paradise.
Despite being an alumni of Ruia, I can't say I particularly love this place. Partly because there were so many other places to create memories and I used to roam all around the town instead of hanging out at one stagnant place.
Food is fairly good. The chinese has improved drastically after the inclusion of Wok Hei chefs. The Schezwan Dosa, Teppanyaki Sizzler Noodles, Shanghai cottage cheese, Sizzled Chilli Tofu are a must-try on their menu.
I would however like to offer some criticism on their service. The waiters are plain arrogant and most of the time, they're irritated and cantankerous, I don't know why. They don't like it much if you call them again and again, they're far from being courteous. They make faces and utter irritated sighs if they cannot hear you properly. They don't like to be questioned about why the food's taking too much time. They give you a feeling that you've disturbed their peace by coming and eating here. It's a major pain to deal with most of the ill-tempered and smug waiters here. Maybe they're getting paid less or for whatever reason, I always get out of DPs with yummy food in my tummy but astonishment at their treatment. I'm paying the hotel for Pete's sake!
A good place with affordable food, if you neglect the waiters' behavior. A good place to go to if you're low on cash and want to have a decent, quick meal. Chinese is available at all times, so people like me, being ardent Chinese fans don't get disappointed at any time of the day.
Although the pavement-Chinese-wala which opens opposite Ruia after 8 pm serves equally yummy Chinese at much, much cheaper rates. Of course, hygiene might be an issue but then who guarantees that the kitchens of DPs are leagues cleaner?
Being a Ruiaties,We always stands near the Hotel. We are very much used to it that place.
Well This place is good hang around joint and nice fast food center.Especially Pav Bhaji and FRUIT BEER is awesome. Now he started with Thai food also. He has got lots of veriety in veg food n south indian dishes, chinese rice. if u r looking good quality food u shoud visit this place.
Adda for eva.........
Man..... I have got so many memories of this place, & the best part is that the taste is still the same over so many years. No wonder it is the favourite of all ruiaites even now.
If you have not been here, then be prepared to wait for your table, if you do visit during lunch hours. Otherwise too, because of such close proximity to Ruia, it is mostly full.
The south Indian & mexican dishes they serve along with endless varietes of chaat are yummy. The only item I never enjoyed here was the tomato omlette......... there is hardly any tomato in it :P
This was the place to visit when I went to Ruia college a few years ago. The outdoors seating area isn't a great idea given the location of the restaurant.
Fruit beer is their USP. Fruit beer with ice cream as well Masala pav are great too. The Chinese is the typical Indian teekha Chinese sort. The fried rice is miserly in quantity. The service however, is rude and painfully slow. The food isn't value for money. It's an ok place for fast food but you'd prefer south Indian food you might want to try the south-Indian eateries at King's circle and nearby. You are spoilt for choice of southie food in Matunga.
Good ol' days (are sadly over)...
Since we were studying in Ruia, this was our ultimate hangout.Be it normal college days or socials', one would find us here sharing the huge quantity of Masala Pulav among 7 people.
However yesterday was different. The ambience has changed what with all the feng shui bamboo shoots ubiquitous and Buddha statues. They have a new revamped Thai/Chinese menu card. The old menu card is still the same and we decided to order Fried Veg Wantons, Masala Pulav (sans the cashews),Pav Bhaji and Schezwan Dosa along with root beer and lime juice.
The quantity of Masala pulav was measly compared to what we were used to.The food was bland. The bill came to around Rs 360.
There is this eccentric waiter who just does opposite of what he has been told.We had the "privilege" of being served by him and having a taste of his eccentricity once again.
All in all a nothing great experience..
4 Star for the new thai food menu
Well people they have started some really good THAI food
Its cheap and really worth for wht you pay around 100 bugs a dish.
I think the location deserves this price as its not tht gr8 but qualtiy did mar me to give some extra points.
Yaaa also being an hotel in matunga famous for south indian food DP'S is the one making use of green chilli chatni inside MYSORE Dosa can u imagine...lolz
FRUIT BEER quality has been degraded as u can hardly find any bubbly moments in it..itz not that good as earlier ..a gr8 change in soda quality has made this drink no longer fav to me.Last month i had ordered 1 and changed it thrice ..at last end up having jus little of it.
VEG CHEESE GRILL is one which has loads of cucumber and hardly 1.5inch thick and chesse is like stuck up wid bread i guess they use slices..and just a hint of grated once.
Actually they alos came up with ICE-CREAM PIZZA few years ago and people use to get nutz for it ...jus by listning da name & not using their brains but obv who will like it.
They also have an age old tradition of serving a free papad with PAV BHAJI and they are da 1 where u get the most unique MASALA PAV its like normal bhaji on top of pav n stuff tastes gr8 both of them.
SERVICE is good speedy but don like to sit outside bcoz generally wid my gal when i use to go ovr thr there are too many ghats of ruia ...not podar but obv staring n complete cheapsters ...well i have also heard if u dont knw marathi its not a vice deciion to take admin in ruia as da HOD talks in marathi...yaa thts true..
They SERVE chinese and thai food in special dabbas so its hot all da time ....please do add further reviews
Amazing Fruit Beer.
This place is really happening as it is beside the two most happening college ruia and podar. This restaurant offers many varities and also started thai. But to be frank i don't think one might spend on it.But the amazing thing is the fruit beer.I would give 3 stars for the fruit beer and remains the food.May be onion uttapa and dosa would be nice choice for a temporary hunger.
Well, being a Ruiaite,we used to once a while i.e when our pockets allowed treat ourselves here. The food is what you would get normally but the beauty is the taste.
South Indian..You can order anything with your eyes closed,it will be hot..Pl check out the Schezwan Dosa..It tastes awesome..
Sandwiches:Please, please try the Chilly Cheese grilled sandwich. Its a cheese tower with three bread slices filled with chilly n cheese and the experience is heavenly.
Chinese..Hmm..never hesitate to order Chinese because its passable if not authentic..It is typically Indian meaning lots of oil n spice...
Pav Bhaji..Hurray...Order anything..even the masala pav...which i think is an excellent idea..is a dish on its own with the thick hot bhaji poured over buttered pav with a blob of butter...
Masala Pulav...This is also out of the world...the quantity is generous and comes with papad and cucumber salad...
A good experience on the whole..where you will not be disappointed.
