Chaat Chaska

If you cannot keep your hands off street food, but have apprehensions about the hygiene bit, then elco pani puri centre is the place to be at. Dosa, chole, ragda, pani puri, sev puri, bhel puri, there's all kinds of chaat. The vendors there take special efforts to keep it hygienic. They always have gloves on and keep their hair covered. And though the prices are a little high for street food, the taste and hygiene make up for it. For example, a plate of Pnai Puri will cost you Rs. 60. The place has an al-fresco area, that allows you to stand and feast on the chaat. You can also choose to sit inside instead. .

Apart from chaat, they also have chinese food and desserts too. their Falooda is a must try.

The best chaat in the city!

Chaat is an Indian favourite for snacking and the term has become so all-encompassing for a variety of spicy-sour-sweet-tangy treats that the flavours themselves can vary from one end of the spectrum to the other. And so people would tend to have their own preference of what constitutes a perfect Chaat based upon their comforts with certain flavours. Elco is one place serving chaats for eons that is a favourite of many. The place is always packed with customers. The area is very small and floor space has been utilized to the full, so it gets noisy. The place is very clean which is a surprise in itself considering the crowd. Some of my often tried dishes are - 1.Basket Chaat: which is a classic snack with a fried potato bowl filled with Dahi Vada, boiled potatoes, onion, tomatoes etc. and topped with curd and chutneys. The true test of this Chaat is the crispiness of the potato basket and the same was perfect here. Despite being loaded with curd and chutneys, the basket retained both its form and texture. 2.Chinese Bhel: Again, the noodles were crisp and the sauce was not overpowering. 3.Corn Bhel: Very tasty. The corn added to the crunch of the Bhel. 4.Pav bhaji: The bhaji was pretty standard tasting like what is available at most decent places in the city. Extra pavs were served pretty quickly. Pani Puri: This is what the place is famous for. The pani, puris, filling and chutneys were served separately that people can customize the same to their liking. They serve 3 kinds of chutneys on the table (I think one needs to ask for it) which are delicious and can be used to customize the taste of various Chaats. Desserts: The Falooda was decent in taste, though not as thick as is served at some of the other places. Kulfi was creamy enough, though a tad too sweet for our liking. With most snacks averaging around Rs.100, this place is a definite addition to my list of VFM eateries serving delicious food.

A childhood memory

I used to go to Elco Market in Bandra during my childhood. After shopping,me and my parents used to go to Elco Pani Puri Centre for his famous pani puri. It was like a routine. He started from just a roadside stand and now he is grown to a 2 storey full fledged restaurant. Just recently i visited this after a long time. The pani puri is AMAZING. And the guy serving the pani puri was so quick,we didn't even have time to finish one. There is all kinds of chaats available here and you wont regret ordering any of the dish.Be it sev puri, ragda pattice, pav bhaji or even south indian snacks, each and every dish is amazing. You have an option of going upstairs and sitting in the lavish restaurant or you can be a Mumbaikar and be downstairs and eat just like you would on any other roadside stall. And the servicing is awesome, never seen such waiters in any restaurants yet. KUDOS!!!

Mixed bag

Went to the famous elco restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and was glad that I got a table pretty easily. But to my surprise there were quite a few mosquitoes buzzing around which was a real put off. Food was brought quickly in which the chole bhature was superb and so was the fresh strawberry milkshake which had good natural sweetness. Price is on the steeper side for a fast food restaurant.

My Default "Go-To" Place

I love this place. The first time I tried this was a few years ago, and as a former South Bombay resident, the default "go-to" place for me used to be Swati Snacks for years. However, once I had Elco, there was no turning back. Yes, it's a given that their Paani Puri's are AMAZING and the take-away Paani Puri is truly and amazing deal (@360 INR for 50 puris, 2 huge bags of the spicy paani, date chutney and the lentils!!), but I was pleasantly surprised when I went over for a family dinner on a Sunday evening, and we ordered the Black Currant, Tutti Frutti and Butterscotch flavour Kulfi. It is quite delicious!!

Too Hyped!

Don't go here expecting fancy décor, fine cutlery and quite atmosphere. If you are looking for quick service, on the run food, and every type of snack , then this is the place for you!

After shopping for hours at the Linking Road, we hit this place. Situated in heart of Bandra at Hill Road, this place is always packed. Being a Saturday, we were given 10 minute waiting, which was understood. After almost 10 we were seated. We ordered a Ragda Pattice, Pav Bhaji, Sweet Lassi, Fresh lime soda, Paneer Pakoda and Dahi Bhalle in regular intervals.

Lets take them one by one.
1. Pav Bhaji: Pretty good, though pav were dripping with butter. Too much. Please ask them to avoid this as Bhaji already has a lot of butter.
2. Ragda Pattice: Is served with veg raita and bun. This is simply wow. Make sure you have this.
3. Sweet Lassi: Apt sweetness, though a little too thick.
4. Fresh Lime Soda: less of soda impact, but good flavour of lime.
5. Paneer Pakoda: Please avoid this. Not good in taste and also in quantity. 6 pieces for 120 bucks. Not worth it.
6. Dahi Bhalle: Pretty good. Can try. The curd used was very good.

The quantity they serve is pretty good, except for panner pakoda. We ended up paying close to 700 for all this.

Too hyped this place, I found it average.

Nice place!!

Elco is probably one of the cheapest places on Hill Road. Having said that, the food is quite tasty and from what I hear (and my own experience so far) their cooking habits are pretty tidy and the food is healthy and safe. We ordered many chaats and loved all of them. The chole-poori was quite good as well. The place is neat and clean, and the staff is usually friendly. Pani puris and dosas are also popular with the crowd there. Royal Falooda Kulfi is highly highly highly recommended!! Grab a place and try it out when you're around.

My Favourite Road Side Food Stall

Elco Pani Puri has been famous since years for its chaats.. from a road side stall.. to a now a restaurant... it serves chaats made with mineral water...

My personal favourite is the Pani Puri without a doubt... other excellent food items include.. ragda pattice... chana pav... sev puri... dosas etc.. the Royal Kulfi Falooda should not be missed..

Do not expect much from the ambience.. its a typical fast food joint.. service is prompt... but the food is to die for... this ones a must try for those who love street food and are looking for a hygienic option!

Exorbitant

The chaat is mind blowing, there are no doubts about that. They also are very hygienic and ensure that they wear gloves while serving. The have an A/C section too if you find the open air area too cramped up and crowded. However the main area of concern are the sky high rates. I am sure one can find many other places in Mumbai serving equally yummy chaat as Elco's at much modest rates.

Safe and Delicious for the Paranoid Foreigner

Mumbai is known for its delicious street eats, but where's a food-paranoid foreigner to try these savory-sweet-spicy delights without fear of falling ill? Enter Elco, using purified water for its pani puri and wacking out some tasty yet hygienic vegetarian chaat dishes. Hubby and I have enjoyed their myriad offerings, including the ever-classic bhel puri, masala dosa, hakka noodles, chilli paneer, chhole/batura, and of course, the pani puri. Really good stuff. We've eaten there quite regularly and never gotten sick (a miracle for my weak American stomach here). To add to our delight, the place is always extremely clean, the service is cheerful and excellent, and the prices a steal for what you'd pay in the States (Woodlands in DC, I'm looking at you!) for the same food. We'll continue to get our fix here, and are grateful for a place that permits foreigners to enjoy the same Mumbaiker snacks with as much gusto as the locals. Hooray for Elco!

Good Food

A landmark indeed on Hill Road, Bandra. Always crowded with shoppers [read ladies & girls] who come in for a quick bite after shopping around.

This place is known for its Pani Puri. I personally did not like it though, I have had better ones.

They have a dine-in on the upper levels of the restaurant. They also serve food out on the pavement on plastic stools where many people prefer to sit & eat. While most prefer to have the Pani Puri standing,

Apart from Pani Puri, they serve very good Ragda Pattice, Dahi Puri, Chhole Bhature, Pav Bhaji. The dahi that they use is thick and sweet. The South Indian fare they serve is also decent. I like the 2 chutneys they serve with the Dosa / Wada.

The fruit juices and milkshakes are also nice.

It is on the expensive side but the quality is good so you don't mind paying a bit more.

Nice but not my kind...Its commercialized

This is one of the iconic restaurants in Mumbai and after starting off as a road-side stall, it has expanded one of the most crowded chaat walas in the city... But i still like the road side telavala for chaat better... Elco is more commercialized but still their chaat is good... you have a variety of other options too...

Elco Pani-Puri....super Yum!

Located right in the middle of the hustle and bustle on Hill Road, its difficult to miss out on Elco. The first thing you notice is the queue for pani puri. And trust me its every bit worth it. Then you head inside and begin a string of orders.

This place is known for their chaats. Its always been a tradition with my group of friends to begin with pani puri and then call for Dahi Puri, Aloo Tikki Chaat, Ragda Pattice and Papdi Chaat. I don't recollect we've wasted food here ;) To go with this, order for Chickoo milkshake which is super yum. All this for Rs 500. Frankly expensive for chaats but you cannot deny the taste and quality.

They are quite hygienic with food as well as in service. You get served quickly despite the rush. No wonder they have patrons coming in again and again. For chaat in Bandra you must come to Elco!

Very good Customer Service & Good food

The Chaat and Dosa's are very good. Can't complain about the food.

The ambience isn't nice because its a chaat eatery so it attracts the mainstream crowd- you have people sitting around you with body odor and children screaming away. Bathrooms are dirty too! This isn't a place to entertain anyone.

The manager is very courteous and helpful. Cant complain about the customer service- staff is helpful-

Over-hyped!!!Strictly average food!

This joint is quite popular and is well-known for chaats and pani-puris . Besides sitting on the outside , it has also an ac restaurant . The place looks clean and food seems to be hygienic in the first look. We were 3 families and wanted to have some spicy snacks. We started with Pani-puris , Rs 50 for 6 pieces . Most of us however did not like that but our mausi who was visiting us from US loved it. Next we ordered Basket chaat, papdi chaat which was overflowing with curd and extremely bland . Pav Bhaji came with dahi vada and gulab jamun ( great!) but the taste of the bhaji was just average . We also had hakka noodles which was good and sarson ka saag with the rotis . The rotis were great , saag was okay and then when we had almost finished it , we found 2 large stones in the saag.........it was really bad and took away one thing going in favour of this joint , the hygiene part . They informed that they would not charge for this dish. We also had rava dosa which took alsmot 30 minutes to come . In desserts , we had gulb jamun with rabri which was awesome but was 140 bucks . Kulfi-rabri was also nice. In summary, the food is strictly so-so but the place is both expensive and over-hyped . However its location is great and will always attract foodies for quick-bites.

Yummy Chaat & South Indian

I had eaten here once a long time ago and felt it was overrated. Was passing through and decided to stop for some chaat.

Food: First we shared a couple of plates of Pani Puri amongst us downstairs before heading up. Next up was the Raj Kachori and Sev Puri. Didn't try the Sev Puri but the Pani Puri and Raj Kachori were simply delish with the right amount of sweet chutney and stuffing in the Raj Kachori. Surprisingly even the South Indian was equally good. The red chutney with the Mysore Sada was among the best I've had.

Damages: Approx Rs 450 - Rs 500 for 2 pani puris, raj kachori, sev puri, mysore sada, chocolate milkshake and mosambi juice. The chaat is priced on the higher side but super yum.

Am definitely going back for more

Super Un-hygienic

I'm a bandraite and have been to elco a few times, however saturday night was a disaster - went there to get kulfi falooda and to my shock and disappointment i saw a cockroach in the bowl while eating

I went back to the counter and showed the cockroach to the owner, who very calmly said "let me change that for you" - sounded more like an everyday affair for him.

I refused to take a change and so was handed over the refund immediately

Din’t think it was wise enough to stand there and fight about how could he serve customers in this way, however its important to use this forum to let everyone know that it’s a big risk eating at such an un-hygienic place

average place

One of the thing that favours this place is the location, it is on a prime location on hill road and after a long day's shopping one is bound to go to this place as there's hardly any other good vegetarian restaurant around. We had tried the dahi potato puri(rs 70) which was very average and a stuffed paratha(paneer and spring onion rs 150), the paratha included black dal and a bowl of raita.
The food is strictly ok , will definitely not say that its the best in chaat ,it actually tastes quite the same as any other place.
The place is on the expensive side if u consider rates of chaats in other places.
FOOD-3.5/5

Yummy but is it worth the bucks?

Ok every Bandraite thinks Elco is the ultimate chaat joint and there's nothing better... But I beg to differ. I completely agree that you get really delicious Paani Puris at this roadside stall but to pay 40 bucks for it is insane! I would recommend Punjab sweet house over it. Also, it is always really crowded and there is barely any space to even stand which makes the overall experience really bad.

Guaranteed good...

This is one of those dependable places where you never have to guess how the food is going to turn out. It's always good here !! I've only had a disappointing paratha once, but otherwise the the chaat, the south indian, the shakes etc have been simply amazing.
Cramped and loud, but who cares when you're busy stuffing your face silly.

Share:

I dont think so...

I've eaten at Elco may be 5 times and always wondered why I paid so much for it.

Anyway, someone told me she found a toe nail in her ragda pattice. Yes a TOE NAIL !

Thats the end of Elcos for me....

Share:

Get away from the noise of the maddening crowd

I am still that small town guy who likes chaat and other such stuff from the around-the-corner shop-on-wheels. Elco is seemingly hygenic (I did see them wearing PVC gloves but then...) and is located strategically for those who are tired from shopping on the streets and want a place to rest their butt.

So I don't have much to say about the food. I had Paani Poori which certainly isn't my type (Nothing beats Paani poori from eastern India). And there isn't much that can go wrong with a Masala ThumsUp.

Verdict: Not exactly a foodie's delight. But I would still go because its one of the better options in the area and the upper level offers a good view of the shoppers while at the same time offering peace from the haggling crowd. Its one of those places that you don't plan to go but would eat out at because of the convenience.

Overrated

I visited this outlet almost after 15 years. Was surprised to see the building which is now air-conditioned. The taste remains the same - quite average. Paani puris are certainly good. But would be careful to rate any of the dishes being the best available on earth. I think we all have our own local bhel waala to whom we would be loyal too. Nothing so special about this place that would change my loyalties.

Share:

Average chaat..

For me the chaat was not that appealing...
the dahi puri was ok kinds...
ragda pattice was good...
pani puri was also ok...had better ones at brijwasi...

they have ac section above...
if tired and want to relax...move up or else can have the food down in open on stools only..
i would recommned you take care of your stuff there....especially mobile phones..

have always tried chaat and pav bhaji here....
nothing too great about them...

i think i will be the first one to write and average review....but that what i feel about this place..

Best chaat in Town

I cannot say enough to my travelling friends and family about Elco's food. Being from the states I am very cautious on eating from road sidelike places. Elco is the exception for both hygene, quality, and taste. The pani puri is literally to die for. If you stand by the gentlemen who is serving it will be no time before you have already crossed one plate and you are 1/2 way into the second. I would say the addition of "bundi" as part of the mix makes the dish a great experience.
I highly recommend that you stop at the Elco on every trip made in the bandra khar area. They get 5 stars from the US food critic

Mouth-watering chats .. taste has not deteriorated over years now. The place has changed from what it used be when we went there as kids. And changed for good :)
I enjoy the Dahi Kachori and Pani Puri the most .. Prices are not high for the quality they offer. ELCO ROCKS !

Best Pani Puris

They have created almost a benchmark when it comes to pani puris. After waiting for a table for half hour we got a table on its 1st floor of indoor seating..quite a cramped up place. I have suprised to see thier menu ranged from chaats to chinese!
I would not dare to venture into anything here but the chaats. Thier pani puri obviously need no mention but was heavenly. The ragda patis was terrific too, so was the dahi pari chaat. The sev puri was a total letdown.
with some more appetite left, we orderd for chole bature and paneer spring onion paratha. The paratha was strictly ok, and the chole was a passe.
As expected of places such as these - decent VFM - although in relative terms this place is expenseive..35 bucks for a pani puri but worth every penny of it.

is what I would call this place. You know a place is good when you see people hoarding around it. Elco is just the place you want to visit when you are in a mood to eat all you can street food. My tip will be to sit outtside if you want to complete the Elco experince, though inside is also pretty neat.

For all those who have firangi friends and relatives dying to get a taste of spicy Indian chaats, bring them here without blinking an eyelid. One of the most hygenic places to try out street food.

Outstanding!

Elco's panipuri is the definitive word in pani puri and chaat! I am grateful to the kind friend who introduced me to Elco's- if I lived closer to Elco's, I would be a permanent fixture here. The pani puri is absolutely outstanding! It beats every other pani puri I have ever sampled. The puris are light and super crisp with the right amount of crunch even after being filled to the brim with chutney. A reliable source tells me that the puris are fried in desi ghee. The panipuri-wala stands outside on the footpath and is ALWAYS surrounded by a swarm of pani puri lovers. The chutneys(paani) that fill the pani puri's are chilled to the perfect temperature and the holistic experience of crisp puri, warm aloo + chana mix +chilled paani is out of this world. Their pani puri's are modelled along the lines of kolkata's legendary "phuchka's" and they do great justice to them too!

Try their bhelpuri and their dahi puri which is to die for. The kulfi with falooda is also brilliant. There is something decadent about sitting outside on plastic stools on a Bandra footpath and eating something so sinfully delicious (or standing by the pani puri wala!) Having never tried sugarcane juice before, I gave into the temptation to try a glass at the stall in front of elco. Heaven...need I say more?!

Everything has already been said! But my personal favorite is not to sit inside, but to begin with a plate of pani puri (standing & slurping away) followed by ragda pattice or sev dahi puri; rava sada; ganne ka juice & carry away the awesome kesar pista kulfi.....(Makes one sound like a hog, but the wife also shares some of this)Jai Sai deva

Keep the pani poori coming!

I visited Elco when I was in Mumbai and the pani poori here is phenomenal and fresh! You literally stand at the counter while the pani poori walla (not sure if that's an official trade) makes each mouth watering package for you one at a time. Eat one, request another - fast, simple, and so delicious!

Also, I live in the U.S. and my weak American stomach was able to handle the food here. I think they use bottled water.

Street stall no more!

Anytime I'm eating at a roadside stall or even a restaurant, the one thing I'm particularly careful about is hygiene.. specially for stuff like paani puri that can easily get you sick! This is one thing I have never had to worry about at Elco..

Many of you may not know, this 2 storey restaurant was once only an illegal street stall sitting in front of that very building. The delicious paani puri n chaat got so popular that now the business operates from the entire building!

To maintain the old charm, there is one paani puri wala sitting right in front of the restaurant and mind you, its still most fun to eat paani puri from that guy outside and not in the luxury of the AC restaurant.

The outside counter follows a coupon system, and you can get a plate of pani puri for about Rs 35.. But don't stop at one plate... Splurge! :)

The best chaat in town

Whenever I am in the Bandra (W) area, I make it a point to stop by Elco Caterers and have some chaat. It is unarguably one of the best chaat's I've had.

It goes without saying that their pani puri is just fabuloso. Do try their dahi papdi chaat or their dali alu chaat also.

They have open seating downstairs, or if it one of those hot summer days you can chose to sit in their air-conditioned section. Either ways the chaat is always just delicious.
