Hard Rock Cafe of Suburbans

We usually go to Colaba to roam around and mostly we end up crashing at Gokul. It is a lovely place where you get good cheap booze, okay-ish food and it's likely that you reach before time, you might get a place to sit in an air conditioned room as well.

They serve regular Indian style chakna. You can always walk few steps and smoke as they have a pan shop right next to the bar.

Staff is not all that friendly but I think when you are in a place like Colaba and if you are getting the feel of suburb then why not.

I will recommend this place to anyone who is still reading this blog. You seriously need a drink my friend.

Thank you for stopping by.
Travel back safe.

Shady place, Quick drink, nothing fancy!

This one is flocked by students and youngsters looking for a cheap drink Duting the day and people at Bademiyan Hopping in for a quick drink. Nothing fancy about this bar except for the location that is right opposite Bademiyan, Colaba. A shady place for cheap drinks average food. Schezuwan chutney and chakli, Charcoal chicken or Coarcoal paneer is something you would find on almost every table. It has AC and non AC with smoking area as well but if you decide to stay at in the non AC be ready to for the company of middle aged men with imperial blue or kingfisher.

Cheap drinks

Gokul is what can best be described as a dive bar. The place is crammed, the tables are to be shared, noise and din is deafening and the service non - existent. The only good things about the place are: great location and even better prices. The combination of the above two makes it a good place to congregate for drinks with friends when you are on a tight budget. Hence, there is always a queue to get the tables. One should make it a point to get a table in the inside AC section. Then stick to the basics – beers, straight mid – end spirits and short eats (peanuts, masala papad etc.). Never tried the actual food here and would not recommend the same. Overall a decent cheap place to grab drinks.

Mumbai's very own watering hole

After many years in this city I finally paid my first visit to Gokul. It's exactly what everyone describes it as; a cheap drinking place packed to brim with middle aged men and young office crowd. People drop in for SST drinks and some awesome chakhna. If you choose to sit at the AC section it's doesn't feel awkward at all cause all you see is the office and college crowd.

I had just gone for some cheap and chilled beer after a really hot and humid day. Didn't try any food but the drinks and chakhna were totally paisa vasool. Now that the prices of booze are going up I think I'll be going to Gokul regularly.

Sorted Place For College People.

Where do you go when you are in college and you have bunked your lectures/been kicked out ? Where do you go in your devdas stage of life ? Where would you go if you dont have enough money to sit at leopold cafe ? The answer to all these questions is GOKUL*.
Shady ambience(Dim yellow lights( blocked a little by tissue papers )). Cheap Booze( Very Important Point). College crowd(great socializing place) ;)
I have always had fun in gokul , i usually sit in the AC section. I always bump into people from college or old friends. Girl friendly place.

Pathetic place

]: Gokul is quite a regular restaurant in size at south Mumbai. However the better part of it is that it serves cheap alcohol till 2am. The place is very shady and you will find only regular college chaps in the restaurant. The food is average. It’s a very unhygienic place, the washrooms stink from a distance only. Tinned bottles of red bull smell like shit covered on them. The waiters are ready to pounce of you for wasting their time. Overall, a recommended place for cheap and late alcohol.
Recommendations: Only recommended for Desi drinks.

Under rated food

Cheap booze is the first thing that comes to mind when one talks about Gokul. But what gets left out is the really brilliant and reasonably priced North Indian food. The AC section generally has decent college going or sometimes office crowd in the evening which really contributes to the nice, happy atmosphere around.
Really great place for college students to have a good night out.

Shady but rocking

Music:
Ignorable.

Food:
Chicken 65, Tandoori and Biryani is a must try. Don't really care too much about the veg here.

Service:
Well, don't expect a high-end bar service. Its decent.

Ambiance:
Shady, like i said. But you'll occasionally spot the best SoBo crowd here early evenings.

Price:
A complete paisa vasool.

Overrated

I can't imagine why anyone in their right minds would go to this dump, given the plethora of options in the area. But it is something of an institution. It's that place you go to for the last few drinks to get really smashed. Cheap prices is the only thing it has going for it. They serve alcohol by the quarter & even bottle. The crowd has changed a lot over the years. A lot of tourists & yuppies in these days. It's even in the freaking Lonely Planet...

Go-to for cheap Booze !

The first time I came to this place I was kinda taken aback by the crowd in the Non- ac section ! I thought we came in the wrong place but as soon as we entered the Ac section the crowd took a complete flip. From lower class middle aged men to College students who can't afford the expensive southern joints for booze !

Drink whatever you want ! Everything is cheap. Chicken chilly is my favourite !And Schezwan Noodlles if you decide to go to maincourse- which people rarely do.

If you want to keep it classy, avoid. If you don't like smoky ambiance, avoid. If you are broke most of the time and want to have a good time with your friends, this is the place!

Dingy but affordable

Gokul was a perennial choice when we were a bunch of college goers looking for a cheap beer n food place to hang out at! The exterior is absolutely shady and even when you enter, the non AC section is just full of middle-aged men. However, step inside into the AC section and all you'll see are college students - the place is packed with them! The drinks here are cheaper than most other places you'll find in Mumbai and because it's so frequented by younger crowd, you really won't feel awkward. The food is strictly OK. What we always did was just to order a few starters or snacks and then head out to Bade Miya which is located bang in front of Gokul. No ambiance to speak of - the place is so dimly lit you'd think it's one of those bars they show in hindi films where you find only goons and troublemakers. Go there if you've got little or no cash to spare!

Affordable Alchohol

This weekend I went on a micro-mini food trail with my family: - Bade Meeyan, Gokul & Bagdadi....

Just FYI, I will be posting this same review for all the 3 places mentioned, so that anyone who is searching for either of these places, can read this review....

There are only 3 things needed to make any eatery a great place to visit:-
(1) Amazing Food
(2) Good Service
(3) VFM (Value For Money)

And all the 3 places that I visited mastered these requirements.

We started with Bade Meeyan and ordered a 'Chicken Baida Roti'. It is a roomali roti stuffed with minced chicken and coated with beaten egg. This is then cooked to perfection....Totally unhealthy for the calorie counters, but utterly delicious. The roti was crisp on the outside and the minced chicken was perfectly cooked and spiced. This was served with some chopped onions, a slice of lime and really tasty green chutney. I have visited this place many times and everytime I leave a happy customer. Be it the sheek kababs, the tandoori chicken or the baida roti, everything is cooked perfectly, everytime.

We then moved on to Gokul for some chilled beer. Here we ordered for chana daal chaat, masala papad, dal fry and super crisp garlic naan, again accompanied with come chopped onions. The chana chaat was filled with bags of flavor with the right balance of lime juice, chopped onions and chopped tomatoes. The dal fry was amazing and the super crisp garlic naan was a perfect accompaniment.

Finally, we moved to Bagdadi. Here we ordered tandoori chicken fry, masala chicken fry, tandoori rotis and caramel custard. The tandoori chicken fry was something I was eating for the first time. It is basically a tandoori chicken dipped in some batter and fried. Although delicious, I still prefer the original tandoori chicken to the fried version. The masala chicken was super tasty. The gravy was perfectly spiced. They also serve extra gravy if needed. The caramel custard was a great surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be so perfect with the right amount of sweetness and chilled. It was so smooth that it would just slip into your throat. It was the perfect way to end a perfect meal. :) :) :)

Great food and drink at a reasonable price

Gokul is a venerable establishment like no other. Basically a hard-drinking place, it serves food that is truly brilliant and (contrary to what everyone says) leaves Bade Miya far behind. The tava fish (bangda, surmai, bombil) are wonderful, with or without a beer. The chicken tikka is prizeworthy and the prawns koliwada are fresh, crunchy and fiery hot. If you're a vegetarian this is not the place for you, but if you are a non-drinker you might still enjoy it - many of my non-drinking friends come along with the rest of us just for the fish and chicken. Once you have had your fill of snacks and drinks (in most parts of this vast place you can order by the quarter bottle), finish off your meal with tandoori roti and dal fry, the latter is amazing and tastes exactly as I remember first having it more than 25 years ago!

This place is not for the class-conscious or for people who identify "service" with ignorant, suited waiters. It's a friendly, buzzing place that will charge up your spirits (and fill you up with spirits too!). The only negative (for me) is that they put in a TV in almost every section and it's always tuned to cricket...

Share:

Serious binge!

Leave all your expectation for service, ambiance behind and hop in this watering hole for some serious binge! They serve by the quarter in one section and allow smoking in another. Cannot vouch much about the food...but it is advisable to eat across the street in Bade Miya or Baghdadi.
Reminds me of the Olypub - Russell Punjabi combination in Calcutta.

Very Bad Place

From outside the Bar looks great but inside its totally mess, When you talk about smoking its allowed only for Peg system where usually girls sit but its not allowed for quater system its very strange and while arguing they are saying its goverment policy.. The service is too bad I went with my group the only thing the waiter was doing was getting alchol and cold drink for us rest making peg, putting ice and even I have to go some corner to get stirrer to make my and friends peg. The worst part is card is not accepted.

Good place to hangout,

Too damn noisy and over crowded on weekends, the A/C section thats inside is usualy overpacked, ciggerate smoke being the negative factor that might make you suffocate a bit, however the drinks are damn cheap , dont expect a great service, the waiters have a tough time handling too many people. good place to hang out with friends , when ambience is not a utmost requirement for you. Try chicken bhuna with rumali roti as food. Eat Drink and be merry.

Dirt Cheap!

Dirt Cheap Bar and Restaurant!
Just a stone throw away from the magnificent TAJ MAHAL PALACE HOTEL.
Best thing is they drink every drink on the menu in a big glass..from Vodka to Beer!

Go there only to drink and get totally out..
as you will end up drinking more than you you usually do!!!;)

Drink. And feel good about it.

This place is so good, it is actually worth undertaking a long 'burbs-to-town journey only to come here.
Coming here has become a tradition of sorts since we come here after the end of every exam/semester.
Have only sat in the lower A/c room and the ambiance is just what you'd want if you want to drink and have a conversation. Smoking is allowed so there is always a slight haze in the room and with the a/c it becomes a very cozy place. A bit cramped up yes, but that is fine.
This is the only place in the city that I've been to that serves H5K off the tap. and h5k draft is so refreshing it kills all the other strong beers out there without lifting a finger.
And yes. coming to the food. Make sure you have the Mutton Seekh Kebabs. Succulent and the best you'll have in the city! Even better than Bade Miyaans. That along with the green chutney the serve... Bliss.
Don't forget to order chakli and Szechwan sauce. Goes great with the beer.

Surprisingly nice food at Gokul

We went to Gokul for a few beers after watching an IPL match coz Leopold's and Mondegar's were packed and Gokul is also cheap! We'd decided to go to Bade Miya's for food later.

Food
Actually, we didn't order much coz we were focusing on the beers. But we did call for some chicken chilly and fish fry. The chicken was okay...not as soft as I like it. But the fish was brilliant! And they have this amazing green chutney that is to die for! My mouth is watering as I think about it!

Menu variety
Normal cheap restaurant menu. Indian and Chinese items. Nothing great.

Service
Like Bade Miya, bad service. We had to keep calling for a waiter and somebody finally came to take our order.

Ambience
Too noisy and too much people density! Tables are close to each other and seating is generally cramped. Not the best place you'd want to go to!

Value for money
A pitcher of beer that serves 6 people costs Rs. 300. I say great VFM!

And in conclusion...
If you're looking for cheap booze after a long day at work in the south-most tip of Bombay, go here for a nice, non-fancy round of beer. It's good for a group of 4 or more. Cheers!

Peace-Not-Please

I came here with my fiend the other day. Sat on top left hand side 1st table bang opposite TV (The Ashes showing- Yeah Cricket). Waiter was irritated just when we entered the place & sat on the table where their was no view of television so we changed the place but after the other table was vacant which was quite annoying for waiter. He expressed his disgust since we moved away from his serving zone after he served us everything but it was not intentional so wtf we apologised & sat on the other table.

Haan :

* Service was ok.
* Cheap bar especially in the location like colaba is blessing in something something.
* Food was cooked nicely.
* Yeah they also wash room where one (READ I) can drink drink & then throw up cause booze is @ pretty nominal rate.

Naa :
* Wash room is dirty looks like haunted ramsay bunglow from a distance (What do you expect it's local bar, wtf)
* No smoke zone on top ! - That's fine just walk down & smoke out. Doesn't sound easy especially when you're attached with universal practise for years drinking & smoking at the table.
* Since it is small place it is conjuncted so what ? it's saving money so I want cry much about the space. I mean you don't have to crawl & drink right @least at the beginning (Aheem)

old hoon mein

Located at Regal behind Taj, it's an institution in itself having existed since more then 25 years ago when it was an open shack.

They have 3 sections

1.) Non A/C

At the bottom and top right. Cheap quarters.

2.) A/C (Non smoking)

At the top left. Semi costly quarters.

3.) A/C with smoking (only peg system though)

Eat only Surmai Fry and nothing else.

Food is pretty pathetic, badly made chicken masala, and chinese type of stuff.

My HOME-away-from-HOME BAR

Everytime i visit Bombay i wanna visit this place.
This is the bar where my ex-wife learned to drink straight vodka's.
Last time i visited was in 2002 but i will be going there again next week.

This is what u do:

order 3 or 4 fried papads and break them on the platter
order a quarter of alcazar or romanov vodka with a cold limca @ the side

start for some serious drinking

have a tomato dahl

order some more vodka forget the limca

get a very well-done seekh kebab [or indian frikadel as we call it in the netherlands] with fresh naan from the tandoori oven

more alcazar, who needs the limca anywayz

One of the oldest Quarter joints around

Gokul Lunch home is located in a lane just behind the Taj. Its in the same lane as Bade Miyan and Bagdadi.

A long time ago it used to have some absolutely great music playing, courtsey the foreign sailors on shore leave who used to patronize it.

Earlier there was huge open non ac space on the ground floor, and also a first floor, that was strictly NO-No if you were 5' 8" +. Besides this there also was an ac section.

Used to be a fav with the ad and journo crowd - and still probably is.
No problem taking women friends here, unless they are the La Di Dha types.

Today Gokul has three distinct sections.

Two Non A/C: -
On the ground floor and another one on the mezzanine on the top right. Booze is by the quarter. Avoid taking your love interest here.

A/C (Non smoking):- Guess this is a new style. This section is also on the mezzanine, but on the top left - ie opposite the non A/c. Quarters available her, but at a slight premium, considering that there is no stale cigarette smoke hanging in the air.

A/C:- This is on the ground floor, in the interiors. No quarters here (but once upon a time it was different). Booze is by the peg. And yes you can puff away to your hearst content.

Chakna is anything fishy. Avoid dinner. Suggest you hooch here and pig out at either Bade Miyan or Bagdadi.

Had my first alcoholic binge there when I was a teen...
Its a great place for some "down & dirty" fun

Catch a drink here before bade miyan !!

This place is in the same lane as Bade miyan and Baghdadi. It is the perfect place to catch a round of drinks before hitting bade miyan or baghdadi for food.

If you may not be in a position after having one too many just chill cause this place also has a wide menu of good tasting food.
