Value for money
Food is tasty, dripping with oil and masala and there is no ambiance,it is loud and everyone is shouting and drunk and smoking..but food is really good, especially all the seafood is good..very few places I like to have seafood and here I have tasted pomfret fry, fish thali, ravas fry and liked it all,so it is a really good place..one of my friends lives nearby and whenever we are working on a project at her place we order in loads of items from here and get it home delivered.
Don't go for looks
I was literally crying when my friends dragged me there. I was standing outside & was thinking should I go inside or not. finally I went outside & my mouth was open. Much to my surprise I saw foreigners there. place was ok. food is good & price is moderate.
The Best 'No Frills' Bar in the city!!
I have been to Janata a few many times and this place just grows on you each and every time you come here!!!
At first glance ,this is a place you surely wouldnt want to step in with female company ,with its typical desi bar look at the entrance. The first time i came here I almost didnt enter ,but then again this place was highly recommended by my friends
There are 2 floors with the upper one being air-conditioned .With its dim lights ,crowded ,noisy and drunken atmosphere-the upper floor is the place where you should be !!!!
The alcohol is just dirt cheap with a wide selection of domestic and international brands, and the food --whether you call for chinese or moghlai ,its just gonna be awesome!!!
My personal favourites here are -the rawas fry, bombil fry, chicken satay kebabs and crispy chicken .frankly speaking i have never gone beyond these four as every time i come here i inadvertently call for these again!!
In spite of whatever you order ,its really difficult to get your bill above 800 bucks/person and that makes this place the best bet for a pre-drinking place
You could just visit janata and then head off to one of the many places nearby in bandra or lower parel. Best of both worlds!!!
Just a few words of caution -come early or you might have to wait for a table ,sometimes even for half an hour .And waiting doesnt mean just siting in a corner till your turn comes,it means prowling around, annoying the waiters and preventing other patrons from grabbing a recently emptied table!!!
Also if you see an empty table with food and drinks on it,dont grab it -it probably belongs to the people smoking at the entrance ,adding to the charisma of this place!!
cheap place for alcohol and munchies.
You can't be a Bandra person and not have been here at least once. It's the complete epitome of a seedy little drinking joint. Don't go there expecting gourmet meals, or a sophisticated wine list. Janata is almost always packed with people, on both levels. Don't worry, once you get over how it looks, you will love it I swear! All in all, it's a nice cheap place for alcohol and munchies.
Any day of the week
unfriendly staff - to crowded - but I love this place
I have been coming here for years I and I will keep going there it has everything you ever need - food booz and mostly easy on the pocket !!!
All and all a must visit in Bandra whenever you are there.
Note: if you are going there on a Friday I suggest you get there really early to get a table (6:30-7:00)
Anybody who likes to have a drink or two with his mates this is the ultimate place. You will find your typical udipi/irani style sitting...no ambience...cramped up...people standing right next to your table and staring at your food and drinks and hoping to get a piece of it....but after those few excruciating minutes of wait ...you see the divine light..you get your table..and then the next 2 hours of amazing food and super cheap drinks (dont know how!) makes it up for everything you suffered!
Food is amazing, Service is too good...not a kinda place to get your girl friend along...
I dont know whats on their menu...but for the 50 odd times I have been to this place with my pals..apart from the drinks..all we have ordered is:
Spring Rolls, Veg Crispy, Paneer Chilly, Paneer Tikka Masala & Roomali !
Non Veggies - Chicken Lollipop and Chicken Tikka Masala!
dikhave pe mat jaooooo
its been years that me and my guy friends have been visiting this bar...we just love this place...decent food...never heavy on the pocket and the the best part is the quarter system they offer...there are a very few bars left in mumbai serving quarters now...just love the prompt service...it does not offer lavishness at all but its actually how the bars were in ancient mumbai...a bit reluctant to take the ladies along there but over the years have seen numerous girls visiting this bar in groups...simply awesome...
Janta after a long time
The recent last time, I had been there was when some of the first twitter people had called me and I was there for just 15-20 minutes. Not that I am a snob, on the contrary have much better quarter joints closer home.
But a friend for chennai, trying to coordinate other friends, out of which one was emphatic about eating at Rajathan that day, led me to suggest some places in Bandra - most which were shot down as saying too pseudo hipster.
Picking up a friend reached by 8 pm. Entering the place politely had a couple of drunks walking down, which led my friend to remark 'Perfect place Machha' Right behind them, two more men walked down, one of them called out my name, on seeing my blank look, introduced himself by handle. Again the comment 'You're a regular, Maccha'.
The first floor was chocoblock but managed to get place and the drinkage began, whilst waiting for others to join, which they did in due course of time.
Some of the regular chakna was ordered - Chana garlic fry - excellent and can equal to a couple of other favourite places of mine; Chicken ishtay - recommended by the nice gent who met & recognised me, nice, indian chini kind, best eaten hot. The surprising find of the evening was Toast omlet - the toast done in the tandoor and hence tasted quite different, a must try.
In an hour and half, there were overloaded tables, with some people walking around and drinking also :) The noise would have gone 1000 times Db limits when we decided to leave.
Overall, a fun place if you want a retro boy's night out, though there were tables having a girl's night out.
Cheap booze, fast service what more do you want?
Janata is what can best be described as a dive bar. The place is crammed, the tables are to be shared, noise and din is deafening and the service non - existent. The only good things about the place are: great location and even better prices. The combination of the above two makes it a good place to congregate for drinks with friends when you are on a tight budget. Hence, there is always a queue to get the tables.
One should make it a point to get a table in the inside AC section. Then stick to the basics beers, straight mid end spirits and short eats (peanuts, masala papad etc.). Never tried the actual food here and would not recommend the same. Overall a decent cheap place to grab drinks.
Lets get this straight. Its called JANATA BAR. People who complain about rude service and bad food have definitely lost it. (And for rude staff - Try Mondys or Totos)
The place is shady. Its a dump. And its cheap. And its meant for broke-end-of-the-month hardcore no frills drinking. And in its category it is second only to Gokul. So shut up and chug and gawk at the bohemians and the kids who come here... because that is what Drinking (With a capital D) is supposed to be. No worries.
Rude & crowded
What a dump. Only good for getting booze late at nights takeaway. I went here yesterday and was actually thrown out for "not ordering enough drinks". Well, I was already drunk and stoned, why do I ought to keep guzzling? They actually kicked us out because my teetotaler friend ordered only a glass of juice. I offered to pay them to let us be but that wasn't good enough apparently. They wouldn't even bring us more drinks.
And it's way too crowded. Some of the women are easy on the eyes but goddamn, it feels like a Mumbai train. There was a crazy guy who shared our table (he was actually a driver) who after getting drunk went on to tell us he was employed in the state government.
So my husband takes me to Janta bar and I stand outside telling him he must be crazy to expect me to come inside a place which looks like a proper daru bar...
it is easy to miss and has proper non-good looking, purely basic furniture with benches and tables... and yes, no music and loud people.
But then i see a few well dressed women walk in and i decide i can go in too.
and by the end of the night, i know i will be coming here again and again!
The waiter takes no time in bringing absolutely basic glasses and your drinks asap. expect no cocktails here. you will get basic daru+cold drinks / soda. that is it.
the waiters ensure that you do not sit there without a drink.. so the moment your glass empties 3/4th they will come in to ask you if you want more... and more...
and the food here is goooood...
its a very interesting place. very crude. the first day we - me, my husband and a friend shared a table with another man who had come alone to drink!!
and he was privy to some very loud drunk talk... and he did not mind it, and neither did we!
This place grows on you. initially you may be in for some shock. but later you realise that this is no-pretence drinking.
So go there if your agenda is to get drunk with friends. if you are looking for nice ambience, well-mannered waiters and beautiful looking drinks-please go someplace else!
- A janta fan
but 1 imp thing. especially on Friday and Saturday nights... dont know about other days coz never went there on any.. . if you reach after 8:15 - 8:30 pm, be sure to find no place and you will be in for some disappointment.
Cheap drinks, decent crowd, bad staff...
I'm a frequent visitor here and it's true that I might not find a cheaper watering hole in my locality and might have to travel all the way to Gokul in town if I wanna get the same kind of alcohol/atmosphere. One constant complaint I've had is the owner and his attitute. He's probably never going to read this and it's not going to change anything about the place; but there is a hilarious yet annoying incident that happened to me here. I walked in with my laptop the other day and wanted to show my friend a picture that was saved on it. So I switched it on for five minutes and was asked by the staff to shut it down immediately. I did so because it did not bother me that time. But, the next time I walked into the place with my laptop, I wasn't allowed to enter and got a rude, "hum aise logo ko andhar aane nahi dete" from the cashier! Can you believe it?! I'm considered a bad person just because I carry a laptop to a drinking place! It happened by chance and I had nothing to say because my friends wanted to drink, so I had to drop my laptop in my friend's car and only then was I allowed. I felt like never going to the place again. Alas, I found myself there the very next day. Why? Cause it's such a cheap option to pre-drink and the sweet corn soup, like Matt Preston believes, is brilliant! Sucks, right?
It is the experience. End-of-month style.
In the world of traveling, people say 'The journey is more important than the destination'. And some of it is true when a foodie says 'The experience is more important than the food'. If you even slightly agree with this saying I just made up, Janata is a place you should visit. This small 'lunch home' is part of Discovery Channel's Lonely Planet book and that is a BIG thing since only the 'must do' places get featured here.
Food here is pretty good. I'd highly recommend the Chicken Crispy and/or Chicken Lollipop starters. Down that with your choice of alcohol. Here, you get alcohol by the bottle (and ofcourse by measure too if you like) If you are in no mood for drinks, get their Chicken Manchow soup. It is perfectly spiced with lots of ginger and garlic. Small shredded pieces of chicken and egg and it is heavenly. The Chicken Tikka biryani is truly epic too, albeit a little on the dry side. Their chicken Manchurian gravy is an unusual brownish-red colored gravy, but nice nonetheless.
Special mention goes to the combination of Chakli and Schezwan sauce. They charge you for both, but that is a MUST try.
Nothing too great honestly. Expect your food to arrive at your table in less than 15 minutes of ordering. The waiters seem to be running around and you think they must've forgotten what you've ordered, but you will be wrong. Once you order, just hold on tight for 15 minutes and you will get what you called for. The service for drinks is pretty quick too. Almost every table has a ice box, so you don't need to keep calling the waiter to fill up your glasses with ice
This is a proper old-school-Indian 'bar'. If you are going there on a first date, DON'T. This is a 'friends-only' sort of bar. Yes, you will find the typical Bandra crowd here. When I said it is a proper 'bar', that does not limit the women from pouring in. You will see men and women of all (legal) ages to be there at Janata at any given point in time. Yes, if you want to have a quiet discussion or just want to chill with a beer, Janata is NOT for you. This place is INSANELY noisy, uncomfortably crowded and hot and no music. You will find people laugh like they heard the most epic joke they have ever heard, some yelling at the waiters to bring their next drink, plates being chucked around on the table. In short, it is chaos. Btw, Janata is split up into 3 sections. The ground floor is a non-AC small restaurant where people share tables with you. The room on the 1st floor has just 1 AC and about 10 tables tightly packed. There is another room on the 1st floor itself which also has about 10 4x6 seating-style tables. I'd recommend going to this room.
You will be amazed at how cheap this place is. You have a couple of beers, have some starters and finish it off with food, expect to pay not more than 350-400 bucks a head. And that is cheap. Remember that most of the restaurants charge you 120-150 bucks for a pint. Here I'm talking about a full 650ml bottle for 130 bucks! The food is great, not overpriced and is a good experience.
Will I go there again - YES!
Will I go there again with friends - ABSOLUTELY!
Will I go there again with family - err... are you serious? NO!
Good to be back
I came back to Janata after a gap of more than 6 years and I was overjoyed to find that not much has changed. Even the furniture seemed the same.
Not your typical quarter joint to begin with, it's now as happening as any pub. I was here on a Thursday night with a friend and we got place only in the non-AC section and we shared our table with 2 other people, which is 'samjhe khaate mein' in a place like this. Though saying 'a place like this' is misleading because this place is unique!
Our food was tasty, the beer was chilled and the bill was hardly anything. Oh, its good to be back.
Never judge a book...
The first time I went here I had my doubts about eating here what with the dodgy, shady look of the place. But now it's the place I visit when I am flat broke or even otherwise.
The booze and the food are dirt cheap. It's always crowded, whatever time of the day, night or week it is but it's amazing how there is always room. The service is quick. It is courteous for such a low-priced place. The menu consists mostly of south Indian food and the Indian variety of Chinese.
The AC room is far better in terms of comfort than the place for the aam 'Janta' downstairs.
Too much janata
I made the worst decision of my life and decided to visit Janata, the famous watering hole in bandra on a saturday night. When we saw the crowd outside, we were already prepared for the top section to be crowded. But when we entered the upper level, we realized, crowded was an understatement! It was as good as a Virar local train, people pushing, waiters pushing and everyone trying to make space for themselves. Since we were just two of us, the waiters informed us that we would have to wait, and after waiting we would have to share the table with two other people!! Wtf, we obviously ran out of that mess and regretted our decision of coming there on a Sat night.
Best of Bandra..
Bandra without Janata? Unthinkable!
Been here a few times (Nice vibe, maybe not so family-orientated, but I don't know. I've usually gone quite late), but anyway mostly I order home...
The delivery guys are the BEST (though there's one guy on the phone inside who's not a great listener when they're busy), the food is good solid Indian/ Chinese kitchen (the 'Chinese' is more the Indian perspective of 'chinese' in terms of spice, which anyway I prefer).
Fancy? Not so much.
Good food, delivery and value? For sure.
Best Butter Chicken and Butter Naans I know??... oh yeah, Legendary :)
If Bandra is the 'Queen of the Suburbs', then Janata is a blazing jewel in her crown!
Janata. Don't change! You're perfect ?????
To Aam Janata, for Aam Janata and by Aam Janata.
If you live in Bandra or are found loitering around often, and still haven't managed to get a glimpse of this shrine for bewdas and bhookads, you're either:
1) An extremely convincing liar.
2) A snobby bimbo.
3) A camel.
5) All of the above.
Janata Restaurant & Bar is probably one of the most popular addas in Aamchi Mumbai located at Pali Naka, one of the busiest streets in Bandra.
If you're just another working man with a minimalistic bank-balance and a serious stingy behavioral issue, you would've certainly been here at least once. The name is self-explanatory. To the Aam Janata, for the Aam Janata and by the Aam Janata. The Mango People.
For other uncommon people and aforementioned species, remember what your teacher said?
"Never judge a book by its cover and beware of Gulshan Grover."
First thing you'd probably notice is the shadiness.
But only after you enter, you'd realize the people sitting there aren't convicts, bandits or Akon-lovers. Just like you! Err, hopefully.
During weekends, if you're lucky enough, you'll get a table or even share it with random strangers. If you're luckier, you might even get one upstairs in the A/C section. But you do know how often our desh ka Janata has to stand in a queue or wait patiently for anything, right?

its been a source of comfort to me when ive wanted to get wasted and dint care about the ambience, i usually draq unsuspecting friends , cousins there after many a rum and coke we stumble out and end up eating at jai hind which is bang opposite, but you get similar food at janata , esp the neer dosa and fish curry also very authentic drunk peoples chilly chicken is available here, if you know what i mean
No clue about the food, Love it for other reasons
Ive spent a memorable afternoon here. wait scratch that because it cant be memorable as i dont remeber much of wat ensued but yeah definitely fun and amazing. I hope you get my drift. Cheap and hasslefree. Recommended to all whose life needs some serious, heavy and major unwinding.
not the most friendly janata.
okay, my foodie reputation was seriously dented after i convinced 6 of my friends to have dinner at Janata, and to be very specific, the butter chicken, recommended by this self proclaimed foodie friend of mine (is say self proclaimed, because after this recommendation of his, i wont back his claim).
The butter chicken was just not right, and have to say ive had better, without insulting peoples taste buds reviewing before or after me.
though the cheap booze helped, it could only heighten my sense of taste, and eventual disappointment.
Shobit, you own me one.
best late nite delivery
I must confess...I've actually never stepped inside janata, but I have ordered their food from home countless times!!! It's cheap, damn good, cheap ( once again ), and they deliver until very late in the night...(I've had food delivered up to 3 am...) Their chicken reshmi & sheek kababs are succulent & awesome. In fact, each friend of mine in Bandra who orders from janata has a different favorite dish from their menu. The other great plus point is that they deliver booze. What else there is not to love?
Super quality for price
I've been to Janata so many times so it's impossible to count.
I have a decent income so I can afford more expensive places but I still love Janata for it's super great cuisine (better than in many expensive places) and super quick service (yes, it's better than IN MOST expensive places).
In Janata you raise your hand and you receive what you want in 1-2 minutes. Glasses are always perfectly clean. Beer is always ice cold. Prices are fantastically low.
My own recommendations:
- Mutton biryani
- Plain fried prawns
- Tandoori paneer
Once you try this place - you will understand why it's always full, throughout the week
Cheap and awesome
For a place so famous and so good - this one's not got enough coverage here! Well I will do my part in making this place famous amongst our fellow Burrpians!
I have been here many many times b4. Primarily for the cheap booze but the food here is worth talking about as well. But more on the food a bit later.
First the place, three levels, generally jam packed over the weekends and especially when there is some sporting event happening! But it doesn't have to be sports to make you enjoy your ice cold beer here! The booze here is much cheaper than many other places which is a big plus! You could drink to your heart's content and not make a big hole in your pocket either!
For instance, a 30ml shot of rum/vodka costs approximately 30-40 bucks while a 750ml beer cost 120 bucks (For a Kingfisher).
Now that we have wined enough, lets get to the dining part!
Janata lunch home offers a wide variety of veg and non veg dishes with most of the dishes being Mangalorean (that is what my friend tells me). You would find most dishes priced around 80-150 bucks with each dish easily filling for 2 people. My group of friends paid approximately 150 each for 1 starter + 2 main course dishes + 1 Jeera rice + 6 rotis! Now that is not a bad amount to pay for such a sumptuous meal! Its not just the food and the booze but the place itself is quite lively. Infact its one of the few 'beer bars' where women can go as well'. It is not a surprise to see women at Janata so if you plan to take ur wife along for a drinking binge and don't want to spend too much, you know where to go then! :D
There are many places which serve alcohol and food but the quality and the price offered by Janata is quite unmatched. This watering hole thoroughly deserves the 4 star rating for serving its patrons with some great food and booze!
Janata Lunch Home - Pali Naka
Bang at Pali Nakak. Janata Lunch home has seen my patronage since a long time. Of course, booze is by the quarter.
As you enter, there are a couppla tables on the ground floor, immediately after the galla, plus some more tables further inside. Thats all non AC.
By means of a narrow staircase you reach the first/mezzanine floor - thats AC. Beyond this is a larger AC space, open only after 8 pm....wimmin frnds are welcome here.
You are bound to end up making friends with other patrons...especially on weekends....as the place is packed.
Be prepared to share your table with others.
Food is average Manglorean.
Open till late. Don't be surprised if you exit out of Pali village - definitely not the way you entered it.
After the party this ones certainly not got a lobby
Last time i couldnt find any place to eat in Bandra after 3 and kept searching until some rickshawallas told me this place jantha was open.. suprisingly the place operates with shutters down after 2 but if u got the munchies at 4 am then join the late night janata!
