Time for some Irani nostalgia with Kheema pav!

This cafe is a stones throw away from my house. My earliest memories here catching up with friends over egg roll and coffee. Just like any other Irani joint, this one has its amount of tables crouched around corners, irani waiters and the the bossman sitting on the counter. Omelette pav, akuri, egg rolls, chicken roll, brun maska, etc are all good here. What you might not want to miss out on is the kheema pav and the chocolate mousse. Easy on your pocket, fairly good food and god serviece.

I had gone to Kyani with my friends after hearing how cheap and yummy the place is. I wasn't disappointed at all. We ate the combo meals. For some, they won't be that filling. For me, the best dish had to be Kheema Pav and the chicken Faarcha. So yummy! You'll find many options for desserts too, but i'm a hopeless caramel custard fan and it was delicious. Kyani isn't favorable for people with an acquired taste. My mughlai loving friends didn't like this place one bit. They thought all that we ate had less of salt and was tasteless. Well :/
And, if you go to Kyani and don't have bun maska with chaai then its a total waste.

Kyani is nostalgia for all Xavierites, having spent endless days and nights here munching on the peculiar and delicious parsi food.. the sausage fritters ith chips, the chicken burger, caramel custard, chai, parsi akuri.. so many films have been shot here.. its an epic monumental place.

Old World Charm - Great Kheema Pao

This is the quintessential Irani Cafe which is very unique to Bombay's vibrant food scene.

The Kheema Pao is good - slightly on a spicier side compared to other Kheema Pao's that you get in Bombay. The Chicken Burger can be skipped, The Mayo Chicken Roll is superb, The Chicken Omllette is spectacular

Have the Caramel Custard for dessert.

If you study or work in South Bombay, there is absolutely no way you should miss out on eating out at Kyani's :)

The good old kyani

Have been eating here since years now!.. Wide range menu with great taste says it all.. The chicken.mutton pattice, egg dishes, pudding, mawa cake..brun maska..too good!! The rates are on the lower side as well.. Must try!!

Kyani! Yummmmmmmy!!

If you want to try some Parsi food, look nowhere else. This is like one of the cheapest and most delicious places in Mumbai. The Chicken Farcha, Salli Boti, Akooree, Kheema Pav are all to die for. Not to forget the caramel custard and the milkmaid desert! Do make it a point to visit this place at least once when in Mumbai!

As good as ever

On a slightly muggy weekday morning, famished, I found myself in the general vicinity of Kayani and decided to roll back the years and take a walk down memory lane. Irani restaurants have always been a big part of the eateries that dotted the Mumbai landscape, and khadoos as most of them are by nature, I loved them. The food was never healthy, yet so immensely satisfying. The décor was never aesthetically pleasing, but something about them always drew you in. In fact, if I had to sum the essence of the quintessential Irani eatery in one line, it would be this. Mind you, this line only makes sense when you know it isn’t mine and I’m lifting it from one of my favorite childhood restaurants called ‘Kooks’. Their name always perplexed me, but their menu and business card always demystified. Don’t judge us by the name, judge us by the food.’ Amen.

The usual junta were gathered around the tables at Kayani. A small smattering of hungry college-goers (it was quite early in the morning, good to see most of the kids weren’t bunking class. Well, at least not bunking and coming here!), guys looking for a cheap bite, guys that just looked like villains from a bad ‘70s hindi movie, some families here and there and of course the waiters that looked like they’d rather be anywhere else; anywhere else, but here. The tables were solid (as always) and it was like the place was stuck in something of a time warp. The world had moved on, but their prices, décor and feel were stuck in time 10 years ago, maybe more.

The missus wanted her bhurjee while I went with the Akoori, and I honestly couldn’t tell the difference beyond the color. They were both essentially bhurjee, but the akoori had a slightly milder flavor made up for with the chillies and tomatoes while the bhurjee had a more consistent flavor you know is your classic bhurjee. With it, we called for Irani tea and some brun maska and the tea was the highlight of that meal for me. It was tea on steroids, the smattering of masala that was carelessly thrown into it adding so much flavor and character to the humble chai. I could pick up the hint of the normal masala you’d see used in masala chai, but also cinnamon and by god, I do love the smell of cinnamon. I had 2 cups of the good stuff to wash things down and called for some mutton samosas as well since I was working up an appetite.

The mutton samosas were your usual patti samosas with minced mutton inside, nothing outstanding if I’m being honest, but with the prices as they were they were excellent. The brun maska too was slathered generously with butter and made for a lovely accompaniment to the bhurjee/akoori.

Sadly, eateries like Kayani are not de rigeur anymore and I can promise you that if I had stayed anywhere nearby I’d be popping in a lot more often, if only for the nostalgic value and the hoenst-to-goodness prices. A hearty breakfast for 2 set us back a whopping Rs. 165 and my wallet and I left Kayani’s quite happy on the whole.

P.S: If 12 bucks can’t buy you anything like a meal here, you know it’d be hard for any other place to match up. I’m looking at you for help, Mr. Babbar.

Kyani's is one place that's full of memories - I've had breakfasts, lunches, in-between meals and even early dinners over here during college. I've spoken so much about it that the husband was curious, so we had to go. We landed up here one morning for breakfast before we caught a show at Metro.
Our marathon breakfast began with the staple Brun-maska with chai and coffee. This was followed by some finger-licking good Kheema Pao and then a Parsi Omlette. For old times sake, I wanted to have the Two toned jelly. It was lovely, just like I remembered it to be.

Epic old school !!

One of the wonders of south mumbai , full of pristine heritage and class.
Loved the ambiance here makes things go back to the British raj !
The seating, layout, buzz, hustle, the steps to each the dinner are so damn epic!!
Along with classic pastry, scones, cakes, sandwiches and nankhatais they also serve traditional Parsi food.
A definite must try when at south mumbai.

My friends and I visited this place after it was suggested by another friend who'd been there 2 days before us. Accordingly we set out exploring the famed Parsi delicacies. Moderately rude waiter, Great meal, Cheap bill. Happy ending? Sadly no!! A day later I find out that my friends, who'd been there before, are down with diarrhoea and dysentery. 3 days later, the 4 of us who went together show the same symptoms. I would advice you to stay away from this place until you've heard of some radical improvements in their safety and hygiene standards. And to expect that from a run down Irani cafe from a bygone era would be just wishful thinking.

BRUNCH AT ITS BEST

i should have wrote the review for this place the first time i went there.. but somehow just missed it.. Kyani n Co a joint which i think must have been there for such a very long time has an authentic feel of iran. the place is neatly kept and has separate section for the families on the top where i have not been yet.
as someone before has noted all the waiters look from north india and i was in doubt if i could get the iranian food i was looking for.. ordered iranian tea first and i was stood corrected.. the perfect iranian tea.

then idecided its time to dig into the food. me and my roomie ordered one kheema ghotala, one chicken pharcha, kheema fry and pav.. got it fast and it was amazing.. as my friend stated "food here is like quick sand.. u jus sink into it and cant egt out"..

chicken pharcha is always kept the best here but advised to eat the first.. as when its hot the taste of the covering on the chicken is amazing.. kheema ghotala being one of the best otems on the menu i have eaten till now is jkheema and egg beaten up and cooked..

and as always i neevr leave kyani without having the custard.. the more it is chilled the better it tastes..

advise all of u to go here for a brunch.. u will surely vome back.. ur wallet being happy because of the cheap rates.. but ur tummy being the one with the last laugh... he will pull u back here for more....

Horrible Experience

Firstly, one of the horrible restaurants in south mumbai which has Stale food , food served is horrid not only taste wise but sometimes food is served in lukewarm state when supposed to be hot, inefficient staff, low level of hygiene and FYI you should the quality of bananas they use for milkshake. A restaurant which believes they are above the customers due to years and years of service. Time to have a reality check. One word : Horrible!

Perfect for all times of the day

We had ordered a chicken burjhi and mutton kheema. The kheema was perfect in taste and the quality of meat was great. Coming to chicken burjhi, there was no apprehension of acidity as there was negligible amount of oil and spices in it. The burjhi was full of tender chicken pieces. Later, we shared a chicken omelette, which was again a treat to the taste buds. Highly recommended. A suggestion -- go there on weekdays afternoon, to enjoy the meal in peace.

Irani to the core !

Monsoon 2012 on a rainy Thursday this morning (5/7/12), we decided to head out to south mumbai with a mission, to try out Irani breakfast( specifically the Irani chai).
This place has the perfect setting for someone wanting to connect to Mumbai's heritage.
I would start withthe food review here and the cons later :).
We ordered the below and think should be tried if going here :
1. Irani Chai - Superb flavour, pepped us up completely !
2. Bun Maska - Soft and fresh bun with a judicious layer of maska, though a little disappointed on the size of the bun. Well you can call seconds, thats not a problem :)
3. Kheem Pav : The mutton kheema was well cooked
4. Baked beans Scrambled egg : Found this quite interesting.

The service was excellent and the experience was a total value for money(250 bucks for all above including seconds for some items).
I would have given this a 5 on 5 had we not spotted a little mice welcoming us when were seated. The review is entirely on the food which we loved !

Mediocre - Not what it used to be

All that is good about Kayani these days is the ambience of days gone by. The taste of the product is no longer what it once may have been. The cakes, pattice, biscuits and bread products are mediocre, however prices are relatively low. It is a good place to have a cup of tea along with something light to eat, look around at the vintage furniture and vintage clientele, but do not expect anything very tasty.

I love my Kyani..

This joint is definitely one of the most indescribable “experience” in Mumbai. I call this place an experience more than a restaurant coz I personally have so many memories associated with it… gluttony ridden, sentimental, awestruck, lazy…
This was the very place which introduced me to the “Parsi bakery” culture…thinking of my 1st visit to the restaurant… with red checkered table cloths, menus to glance through the glass table tops, the skull capped parsi unclejis, the “family only” seating area..i was just transformed into a place built in the past…existing in the past …I love everything about the place!!! everytime I go der!!!
Here is the list of my favs on their menu:
Bites: Chicken cutlet (super yummmm) with bread slice, Chicken pattice (creamy, beautifully flavoured chicken filling within a crunchy pastry..perfecto!!!) , Egg akuri, chicken akuri, Scrambled eggs, bun-muska….
The deserts include everything from cakes, pasteries, falooda to juices. I however strongly recommend their watermelon juice (make sure to go slow on that..it is known to give some serious brain freezes), glass cake (it is just a basic pound cake baked in a glass shaped mould), the date and walnut cake…the variety of food be it snackers or desserts are a plenty to choose from….
P.S: While exiting don’t hesitate to grab the blue nylon rope at the stairs…it is meant to act as a support railing...just suspended from the ceiling instead…

I'd heard a lot abt this place but I found it quite disappointing.

The jelly with ice cream here should never be tasted! The pastries here are fine but not worth recommendin em to others. But this place is good for students on a budget. They serve good breakfast dishes..

I've been to this place twice & I would go there another time only if I have no other choice!

What can one say about a place that has probably been there for a good century...
The keema pav is amazing. the service on dot.
it indeed is a landmark and i recommend you swing by if you are in the dhobi talao Metro area.
