The slow service kills it!

Trying to emulate authentic chinese food, as my dining companion stated, the place serves food that is more sweet than spicy. The place serves only hot and sour soup and does not serve the manchow soup. We ordered the chicken lollipop, called drums of heaven here. This tasted nothing like heaven. We called for the dry aromatic chicken with garlic. This one was passable, but you could taste the dough. The chicken gravy and egg fried rice were the saving grace of the night. Not extraordinary, but they did a fairly good job of satisfying our palates.

The service here is extremely slow though. They took about 10 mins to get us the bill and almost 20 to get us our card back.

Worth the wait...do not leave even if there is a waiting period

Arguably the best Mainland China outlet I have been to and they were bang on to make sure i realized it. A busy Sunday afternoon and we wait for around 30 minutes to get a table. Should i say, the wait was totally worth it.

The first time I opted for a buffet at Mainland China, quite satisfying. A complimentary drink with the buffet...icing on the cake. Refreshed myself with a Mojito, while my wife opted for the Ice Tea. Both drinks scored quite high. Let the starters come by and your plate gets full in no time. Potato fingers, wantons (steamed and fried), chicken wings (my favourite dish of the day), honey glazed prawns, pan fried basa, grilled chicken. The menu got me really greedy and i had to take a second round of almost everything.

My wife really pulled me to the mains...getting me away from the starters. It sure was a wise decision. Take a large helping of the rice and enjoy it with the n number of gravies available. Lamb, lobster, prawns, crab and the chef special (which tasted like red thai curry). My pick of the day was the chef special but others were equally good.

I had a heads up about what i have in store for desserts. Hence, I had made a point to save some space in my already filled tummy. Honey glazed fried noodles topped with vanilla ice cream. How much i had craved for this. A very generous helping of the noodles as well as the ice cream. I do not regret the extra calories that day. It couldn't be a better end to a very sumptuous and satisfying meal.

Mainland China, Lokhandwala remains a strong recommendation for chine food lovers....be ready for the wait on busy days.

If its Chinese, its Mainland China

Mainland China has innumerous number of dishes to offer. The schezwan noodles and the sweet corn chicken soup are my favorites. The venue is classic and royal. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. The chef’s special meal is a must try. The service was prompt even though the restaurant was full. At no point were we disappointed. Not the Best Chinese I have had

Mainland Chinese isn't the best Chinese that I have had had. The gravy for the chicken manchurian & Veg manchurian essentially taste the same and the only way to tell them apart is by actually tasting them & checking which is which and that's a total disaster for the vegetarians. The service could be better and faster. Ambiance is OK OK not that great. Exorbitant rate for food that tastes almost the same. The only thing I liked was the soup. Definitely not value for money.

charming

Had a delightful meal at Mainland China on our last night in India. The venue was stylish and comfortable. The menu also stylish and extremely well laid out. The service was excellent and the food delicious. We ordered the wok tossed potatoes and pan grilled crab cakes to start. Then for main course honey glazed lemon chicken, golden fried rice with garlic and iceberg lettuce roast lamb with greens and garlic sauce. All washed down with Sula Dindori Reserve Shiraz. We rated this as our joint best meal in India along with the Old Harbour in Cochin on New Year’s Eve.

"if its Chinese...its got to be mainland china"

"if its Chinese...its got to be mainland china" is their tag line , but somehow , I have always found reasons to disagree. 5 attempts in different cities, and yet, the opinion stays as in. A prior booking deemed necessary, seeing the almost occupied covers. 3 life sized replicas of the Terracotta warriors welcome you into the tastefully done up restaurant. The smiling attendant seated us to our table, and quickly handed us the I The peppers needed to be more and crunchy. Not overcooked and soft. That is the trick of Chinese cooking, where all vegetables are wok tossed and meant to be enjoyed eaten with a crunch in every bite. Spicy Crab Meat Soup - The meat was lumpy and did not taste fresh. Sweet Corn Chicken Soup - This is always refreshing. pad menu Impressive !! what you see is what you get ! Long Live Technology !

Great Food & Service

Mainland China is known for its exceptional Chinese cuisine, and this particular outlet of the restaurant lives up to its reputation. The place is well-maintained, spic and span, and the ambience is quite nice. The food, right from the starters (especially : dim sums) to the main course to the desserts, is just great. The crispy vegetables / crispy chicken dishes are just great and worth a try. Staff is friendly and will attend to all your questions / requests to the extent possible. Sometimes you have to wait a lot for your order, but the food is really worth the wait. If you are considering trying this place out, go right ahead - you wont be disappointed.

Good Food @ a Price.

Let me Keep this review Short and Sweet.
The Place : Awesome , though seems a little hidden from the Outside world.
The Service : Quite Good. The lady at the entrance always greets you with a smile and drops you to a table of your choice.
The Menu-Cards : iPads are used as Menu-cards. Impressive.
The Food : Tasty Food. If i could i would change the Prices though , a little costly but the Ambience is probably also what they charge for. The Chicken Dumplings Steamed is a must-try.
Overall : Good place to go for some ocassion with someone with a lot of cash ;)

Disappointment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After having heard from my wife a lot about the food at this outlet.. we at last decided to visit this place. to begin with the service... it was excellent.. the staff was very friendly n caring towards my 3 yr old daughter. but to our great disappointment (especially my wife, who had recommended this restaurant), apart from momo's the rest of the food was pathetic. the fish n chicken starters were just cornflour stuffed. not much of a variety for main course as well. a very foodie n having lived with many nationalities for a period of 11 yrs( having cooked food with 18 nationalities including Chinese in the same kitchen for a period of 11 yrs), i found the food here nothing near Chinese. i was very much confused with the starters, if they were Chinese or Indian. the pricing for the buffet was way too high for what they offered.common guys you can't charge 1400 for 2 for what you offered. i mean there should be some common sense.
i would really want them to consider my review seriously.

Good Food

Mainland China is always known for its variety and obviously great Chinese cuisine. I have visited almost all the Mainland China outlets across Sakinaka, Andheri West, Bandra, Powai, etc. Food is very good and whether it is a starter or main course it is consistent in its taste and general look & feel.

The Andheri West outlet has very good ambiance and very friendly and accommodating staff. When asked for a recipe and clarity of ingredients put in, they have always asked the chef to come and talk to me personally - which I think is brilliant! They do have offers, but I generally do not take them. Also, their desserts are fab - especially the honey soaked noodles with Vanilla.. I just cant have enough of it!! :-)
Only one thing I feel works against them is the price..they are a touch expensive , and when I discuss with my folks to go their not everyone is comfortable with the budget they have to keep for the family lunch or dinner at MC!! But great food and great place to eat!!

A must visit!

I absolutely love the ambience at this MLC. It’s oriental and spacious. I went there on my mum’s birthday and the staff came out and sang for her with a guitar and gave us a complementary birthday cake slice – which was quite thoughtful. The lighting is beautiful and pleasing to the eye.
The hospitality and the heavenly food is what will keep you coming back for more! The service is fast and the waiters would bring complementary jasmine green tea whenever you wanted. I love this place, a must visit!

Blissful

The Hospitality and the heavenly food makes it difficult for you keep away from this place for long.

Ambience – 4/5
The setting is very Oriental and spacious, leaving good space for patrons to move about without disturbing others. The lighting is soft and just correct. If you are celebrating a Birthday, the staff pops out a Guitar and strums up a few notes on it; a nice way to make you feel special.

Service – 5/5
Just one word; IMPECCABLE
I don’t think I can find a fault with their service. Welcome Drinks offered on arrival. We were ushered to our table without a delay. Napkins from the table were unfolded and laid on our lap. Plates were laid and the starters started flowing; I am using the word “flowing” coz they literally flowed without a break. We had to tell the stewards to stop till we finished what was served. Half eaten plates were promptly replaced and sauces replenished. The Stewards also insisted that we try some of their speciality dishes.
Could we ask for a better service? A Special Thanks to Bryan for making our every visit special.

Food – 4.5/5
All I can say is that the FOOD IS DIVINE. There isn’t a single dish on the menu which disappoints. I have been here for the Sunday Lunch Buffet and actually kept myself hungry since morning to enjoy the entire spread. The food flows in your plate from the moment you sit and till the time you say STOP, it keeps flowing.

MUST HAVE’s:
1. Crackling Spinach
2. Chicken Taipei - The best Chicken preparation in Chinese I have had so far.
3. Dimsums – Couldn’t be better.
4. Fish in Mango & Mustard Sauce – Can you imagine Mango being used in a Fish preparation. You have to eat it to believe it. WOW!
5. Chilli Garlic Noodles
6. Fish in Chilli & Plum Sauce
7. Caramel Custard – Another Beauty. The only other place where you get such a lip-smacking Caramel Custard is in some old Irani Restaurant in SoBo.
8. Darsaan with Chocolate Fondue

Price – 4.5/5
Worth every penny you spend. Some may call it expensive but Quality comes at a Price.

I sum up my experience with 2 words, EXQUISITE and BLISSFUL. Waiting for the next visit to MLC.

Totally Disappointed this time...!!!

C'mon mainland china...!! I had so many great experiences & expectations from u.. I mean me & my fiance are regulars at this particular outlet.. We have their sunday brunch atleast once a month..We have recommended it our family & friends.. But this time around the experience was literally "sickening"..
Last sunday we were craving for Chinese buffet.. we just wanted to let our hair down & wanted to get pampered with lots of food & great drinks.. I wanted to go to China 1 which is nearby but my fiance is a great fan of mainland china & since its a regular place fo us for wonderful food we didnt give the second thought.
We were welcomed with happy faces as usual, the place was jam-packed as it was sunday afternoon. We had done reservations but have to wait for 15-20 mins which was fine bcoz we have had this experience before... its always busy sunday there & the staff cant do much about it.Finally we get to our table. The waiter asks for water/drinks.. n starts bringing buffet starters one by one.. we get tsing-hei-potatoes,veg & non veg dumplings, chicken wings, black pepper prawns, some fried fish starters, Veg fried dumplings, Stir-fry veggies, some chicken starter, fried crispy spinach, lamb legs etc.. for our surprise not all starters were looking freshly made & hot which was not the case earlier. Specially the chicken starters were little rubbery & chewy and tasted weird. We had everything in moderation hoping that the same wont be repeated on main course. But the starters have spoil our appetite so much that we hardly had anything from the main course. In desserts we had some fruits & ice cream as we were not feeling like eating anymore & my fiance's stomach was getting little funny.. We ordered for bill & preferred leaving for home. When it came,we paid by card as usual but the waiter told us that their swipe machine is not working today so we might have to pay by cash. Since we didnt have much cash,my fiance had to go out to ATM with bad stomach & heavy sun on head.. when he came back, his face was all itchy and all he wanted to do was to vomit all the food out. We ran to home, with me worrying abut his health and he vommited for almost half an hour and still the feeling didn't go away. We went to doctor in the evening & got to know that he's suffering from severe diarrhea and dehydration thanks to the food and water he had taken in the afternoon.
The worst thing happened the very next day.. i got stick with lose motions and vomiting and was diagnosed with the same.. Right now we both are ill with dehydration & weakness and total hatred for our once fab restaurant. Since last two days we both are suffering heavily thinking that we should have cancelled the lunch plans or should have gone to China 1 instead.. We both are highly disappointed..!

Service Charge isnt being passed on to the Servers

Been to the place and the food I must say is good for the prices charged, but as I say the food and service go hand in hand for a wonderful experience. The service I should say wasn't bad but its wasn't worth the price that I would pay service charge for, upon inquiring I found out that the restaurant charges, patrons for it but has never paid it to the staff ever. This led me to find out the way service charge is calculate and charged to clients, for restaurants operating to charge service charge is illegal but since we are known to be stingy tippers I think they do the right thing,(but you can outright deny paying service charge if the service provided to you was below your expectation) but to not give it to the staff is very very unethical for the business to do and its not only mainland china but a few others who also follow the same practice but some give a portion of it while others don't give it at all.
SO please decided whether you want to eat t a place that charges service charge and doesn't pass it on to the rightful people................You decide

Nice large restaurant, reasonably spaced out seating. Have not been disappointed on any visit, tho it always seems super crowded on sunday afternoons (which is a good sign) and the waiting can be a pain.... like most of the items they serve, personally like the fact that they dont seem to have over-indianised the taste.

Not being a Chinese food fan, I was a bit apprehensive about visiting this place. But as soon as I had the first bite of food, I'd say I loved the place. The taste is somewhat not very Chinese though, which is a bonus for a Chinese not-fan like me.

Oooooh Chinese!

Mainland China is not just a restaurant but a legacy I feel. It is very difficult for you to avoid coming back after you have tried this place once. Right from the ambiance to the food to the service, everything seems just perfect. I must appreciate Speciality Restaurants for maintaining this place so well.

The ambiance is very calm, comforting and sophisticated. Dimly lit and very oriental in the right manner. I love the statues at their entrance. Also love the two different sections for seating which are equally good.

Food over here is just divine. I have never regretted a single dish inspite of my many visits to this place. I would strongly recommend their lemon coriander soup, stir fried veggies in sichuan sauce, lotus wrapped rice and the desserts. These are the vegetarian options. My friends who are non-vegetarians tell me great stuff about those dishes too.

Service over here is impeccable. They know what they are doing and they do it right. Their servers are well aware of the menu and they can also get some of the dishes customized on special request for you.

Simply one of the best Chinese restaurants around however, a little over the steeper side. But hey, you the quality spent against every penny of yours.

Surprisingly an Average buffet…

Mainland China does keep up to its standards when it comes to service and the ambience but the food was terrible. They boast of an authentic Chinese cuisine, but it seemed to have been customised for the Indian palate.

To begin with the starters were over spiced making it difficult to differentiate. At one point in time, I wasn’t sure if I was eating a piece of chicken, fish or just a potato.

Too much seafood in the main course for my liking, most of which was undercooked. The rice and noodles were as bland as the soup we started off with.

The only saving grace in my opinion was the bite sized desserts. Loved the ice-cream and the fresh fruit, not much one can go wrong with.

All in all, a very disappointing meal, having shelled out quite a bit. I may not be visiting here again soon.

One of the best chinese food and lunch buffet !!

I've been to Mainland China several times and I simply love the lunch buffet. Its priced at around Rs.650 + taxes but then, rarely do we find prawns, crabs, lobster dishes in buffet plus a complimentary drink where you can choose from beer, fresh lime, iced tea and soft drinks. The starters are served at the table and are simply amazing, every dish and meat has a different taste and flavour to it, which makes you crave for more.
I'd recommended it to my relatives from the US, and had booked the table to celebrate their wedding anniversary. To our surprise, they gave us a complimentary chocolate brownie with ice cream and a bottle of white wine and sang a song for the couple. They were very happy with the place, people and the food.
Main course, like the starters, has all the different meat dishes cooked in different ways. Lobsters are worth a try. And the deserts are plenty, including freshly cut fruits like apple, berries, papaya, lychees, etc. This place rocks !!

I've been visiting Mainland regularly and now I wonder how can one improve PERFECTION! :) Their consistency is so very surprising!!!

The food is as good as it can be, the service unbeatable and the ambiance calm and pleasing.

I would recommend their basil flavored chicken momos in their selection of dimsums. General Tao's chicken is just amazing for the main course and the special sauce served with it adds to the deliciousness!! :)

Kudos to the Mainland China team....they couldn't get better!

Chinese food for the soul !!

Satiating Burrps and Wonderful Memories. That's all what this place is all about. Have been here almost 7-8 times .. and everytime it has been a new experience to talk about.

I wont term myself a gourmet and I havnt even been to China to know what authentic chinese is all about. But this place, for me, is the epitome of chinese cuisine.

We've usually reserved a table to avoid the long wait .. & the staff has been kind enough to honor the reservations. But behold, thats just the beginning of the delightful hospitality. As you head for the lip-smacking buffet, you have to be prepared like Mr.Adam from Man v/s Food. So much variety .. and such a small tummy : )

The soups piping hot .. the starters (4 veg & 4 nonveg) worth every chew (specially the chicken momos and the crispy potatoes). Heading towards the main course, the nonveg (fish, prawns, lamb, chicken, crabs) is fresh and succulent on every bite. Have never really headed towards the veg section, so wont b able to shed light on the same.

& if, after this satiating experience, your stomach still manages to find space, therez a titanic variety of desserts. Fresh fruits, ice-creams, tarts, pasteries, mousse .. you name it, you got it!! Finally after the 3 hour ordeal with bliss, you burrp .. twice :)

I've spent my last couple of b'days at Mainland China .. and I'd say that your food and staff have made my b'day very special. The surprise b'day cake and the serenaders was the cherry on top.

If its Chinese, its DEFINATELY mainland china!

Ive been a frequent visitor to MC from a long time now and iv always been happy (food-wise) and comfy( ambience-wise). Most recently, id been wid my gf for the lunch buffet which is killer spread for a foodie like me ! The hospitality knows no bounds , Mr. Pawar and Mr. Osden wer always there asking "is the food alright, anythng else i can get u" its somethng dat really bonds you to the staff and not just to the food.
5 on 5 for the amazing hospitality. they even took time to tell me wat fish i was eating ( vietnamese cultivated wish , fantastic i tell u! )
i just have one thing to point out, it wud b really nice if MC had some "couple-deals" for the buffet :) i hope the managemnt reads dis :)
A must-go for every chinese lover! :)
much love !

We took our relatives from Spain.. We were 8 people and hardly ordered any starters... We ordered 1 veg and 2 non-veg starters... Wich included fish, chicken... Main course we ordered 2-3 rice and chicken n crab... & brownie fr desserts... Overall food is good but a little sweet... Good service... The momos r good...

Awesome spread

This weekend went for the buffet, at Mainland china and had a great experience.
The spread was vast, right from the starter's to the desserts.
The buffet attracts a lot of people making the overall experience a little stuffy.

Overhyped ehh???

The service needs load of improvement. A class chinese restaurant leaving me unimpressed!!

I luv chinese..for me its no cuisine like chinese... and not been to mainland is sacrilegious. Been here for a dinner with my friend..right from getting us the water to the bill was a constant reminder to the waiter... you dont expect it from a restaurant like this. A fare recommendation asked dint savour my taste buds... I expected the recomm to be really good..to be par excellence with your 5 spice and the likes considering the brand...but was left unsatisfied. Consider trying the recommendation and pondering if 5 spice was even better.

The service sure needs attention. We know that you have your patrons to cater, but dont ignore the remaining lot... prodding them to get you the needs. It was a really sorry state of affairs with us waiting for someone to get to our table or even turning their attention to us. The price was too high to pay for an A listed restaurant which needs to learn its hospitality right.

Overall.. the experience has left a sour taste...reprimanded by my friend for even suggesting a second trip. Adios!!

Top class chinese

We are a big fan of the Mainland China enterprise! Love the buffet lunch and the a-la-carte menu. This is not your typical Indian chinese version of food nor is it authentic chinese food but a nice blend of both flavors. Love the dimsum and darshan. The fish in the buffet is excellent too!

Delectable China

This is indeed a place to relish some authentic Chinese cuisine. For non-vegetarians golden fried prawns and other dimsum like real Chinese preparations are a treat to taste. Bhetki fry a la’ Mainland China speciality is a must that goes well with all noodles and fried rice. Their sumptuous buffet with a host of varied luscious foodstuff is value to every single penny. Hot chinese tea that is complementary, served on your table from time to time plays the right bonus to digestive tract.

Deteriorating standards & exceptionally high taxes

we have been visiting MLC for the last 5 yrs now but the quality of food & the service seems to be deteriorating fast. seems like too much of good reviews & the hype they get out of the different awards is getting on to their head.
we went to MLC on sunday, 20th feb & the experience was the worst that we could've expected. i am utterly disgusted at their service. the waiters dont know much & r not able to give proper guidance. most of them seemed new & not knowing much. the plates were not laid on time, the menus and water given after n no. of requests, the food we finally got after waiting for 35 mnts was not what we ordered & the waiter refused to acknowledge his mistake! the food was far too oily & too salty(inspite of insisting we want less salt!), leaving an oil dripping plate behind.
we always enjoyed going there for meals but the last 2 visits have made us decide never ever to put our feet in MLC again. Their tax system is again something we dont understand. they charge service tax as well as sales tax. the tax amount itself came to more than 500 bucks in a bill of 2800 Rs. dont know how far is this correct! The Legacy of China in versova definitely comes across as a better VFM restaurant
This ones specially for the concerned authorities - if u dont mind ur service & food, u will lose even more regular customers.

land of the China-Man

The first time i visited this place was when it had opened years back, so today as i walked in to get some lunch the experience for me was as good as new. I must admit i was looking to eat some Chinese food other than the typical Indian-ised version like 5 spice ( not that i hate their food) just was in mood for something more or close to authentic ( not that i have been to china either, LOL ) ... The starters that we called for was the siu mai in chicken and a basil favored veg dumplings which was superb, the sauces that were served along with it was exceptional .. for the main course we opted for the ginger and capsicum fried rice and chili basil fish in clay-pot .. the flavors were absolutely gorgeous and the fish was fresh! and we ended our meal with a plate of chocolate rolls in ice-cream which was divine .. the only downside was that while we were still there they were clearing out the buffet tables and its looked for a moment i was sitting inside a kitchen than a restaurant, but i must say the service was good and the staff was extremely polite .. Over all it was a great tuesday afternoon ... well spent .. cheers !!

The best chinese Restaurant...

My 1st experience of visiting Mainland China was in Calcutta and I simply loved the ambience, food and service. With the same expectation i went to this Andheri outlet, and i was not dissapointed. The food was great, amazing ambience and service was too good.
Keep it up.

The best Chinese in Andheri

I have eaten at different Mainland China restaurants but someone never liked the food, the service or the ambience.
But this one was such a suprising and refreshing change.
For starters we had the crackling spinach, veg crispy, sauteed mushrooms, roast duck in chilli plum, Guilin chilli prawns (which are 6 tiger prawns sauteed in one of their spicy sauce) - all of which were exceptionally good.
If you like seafood then do not miss the Shangsi crabmeat soup which is a bit starchy but you can pardon this for the overall tingly taste it leaves on your tastebuds.
In rice, we opted for the chicken fried rice to be safer side, though this place looked like relatively good to experiment with. But we were too scared to spoil what had been a pleasureable experience till then.
And our decision was vindicated. The rice was fragrant and nice and went well with the roast lamb in oyster sauce.
What I liked a lot about this place is that the portions are really good and a single dish can do justice to two diners, which makes the slightly exorbitant cost look not as exorbitant after all.
The place also has a private dining room which the captain told us was for groups of at least 15 people.
In all, after a long time, I had delightful Chinese fare which was not very Indianised but was not too Chinese to be bland for us at the same time.
I am definitely coming back here for more

Simply Amazin..............

I have been to this place thrice and everytime I couldn't move after the buffet lunch. How can you resist, when you have such a vast & impressive array of starters, main course and desserts. The starters rite from crab to prawns are simply great and by the time you move to main course, u are already full. To top it the desserts are too good to resist. Especially you shouldn't miss the honey noodles with icecream. Service was perfect and i would any day love to be there for their lunch buffet...

Culinary delight!

Tried out the buffet here this weekend. Simply delicious food. One of the very few places that wouldn't mind shelling out some money! ;) The buffet started with soup & a large variety of starters (about 5 if I remember correctly). I read in one of the reviews below that the food here is not "indianized". Spot on! This was nothing like the Chinese food that you usually get. For the main course, there were two types of rice and Hakka noodles. Three / four gravies to choose from! Dessert was fantastic as well (pastries, mousse, fruits, ice-cream, ...). The mango pudding was awesome! Adding to the food, the calm ambience makes it a great way to spend your afternoon with your friends & family.

Who loves Shitake?

Food
I personally believe that Mainland China has the best Chinese food in India. If someone disagrees, please introduce me to the restaurant you'd rate the best for Chinese food, and I'd love to try it! Ranging from the the mouth watering soups, to the dimsums, to the appetizers stir-fried and tossed in woks, to the main course cooked in clay pots...it's Chinese taste to the core. Don't expect very spicy stuff, coz the Chinese food here is not Indianized in the way it is in most places. And if you like shitake mushrooms like I do, ask for any dish and ask them to add some shitake to it :D

Menu Variety
I think Mainland China could do better with their menu. When I go out to eat, I usually have a craving for a certain taste in my mouth. And I always order accordingly, based on the description in the menu matching that taste in my mouth. Somehow, I've never been able to do that in Mainland China. I've always had to ask the waiter for a suggestion, then try to tweak it around, and of course, ask him to add shitake to it!

Service
I have a huge problem with Mainland China's service. The fact is, this place is expensive, and so I would like the waiters to have good knowledge about what goes with what. We ordered for a whiskey and were asking the waiter for suggestions on starters. He suggested some Chicken in Green Chilly and Spring Onion that sounded good, but after asking him more about it, we found out it was in white sauce. I told the waiter that we needed something that will go with whiskey. He had no clue about what I meant. He just said, "Yes yes, whiskey we have Antiquity, RC....". I just decided something off the menu that was in red sauce (safe) and asked him to get it. The friend I was with thought I was expecting too much out of the staff. But really? Was I? If each dish costs Rs. 300, you bloody well be able to tell me if it goes with whiskey!
One more thing was the constant interruption by the staff. In good faith, they always come to the table to ask:

* how the food was
* if we wanted more drinks
* if we wanted to be served, when any one's plate was empty
* if we wanted anything else to eat.

Ambience
Great decor at the Andheri West restaurant. Much, much better than the ones at Sakinaka and Powai. Nice Chinese statues and other metal sculptures. The restaurant was full on a Sunday evening and I generally don't like full restaurants - it gets too noisy with all those people - but you can't blame them for being popular.

VFM
It's an expensive place. And most people like Indianized Chinese better. So you have to take a call here. The food is superb, but over priced. For a meal for two with 2 pegs of whiskey each, one chicken starter, one lamb main course and one beautiful garlic rice, the bill came to about Rs. 2600. Of which I got a discount, thanks to the Speciality Preferred membership ;)

And in conclusion...
Strictly for people who are interested in real Chinese. Otherwise, you will end up spending crazy money for something that is not as per your palate.

AWESOME SUNDAY BUFFET.

THE BUFFET IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF THE FOOD IS FANTASTIC. TO TOP IT ALL THE SERVICE IS ALSO QUITE GOOD. THE STARTERS AND THE DIM SUM ARE EXCELLENT. THE MAIN COURSE HAS MINDBOGLING VARIETY WITH CHICKEN, PRAWN, CRAB AND LOBSTER. THEY HAVE SOME NICE DESSERTS TOO. SOUP, STARTERS, MAINCOURSE, DESSERT AND A DRINK TO GO WITH ALL THIS FOR AN ALL INCLUSIVE PRICE OF RS 557 FOR ADULTS AND 390 FOR CHILDREN THATS WHAT I CALL VALUE FOR MONEY.

Keep it up!

I like the group behind this hotel - Speciality group I think they're called. Machaan, Oh Calcutta and a few others. Good. Keep it up.

On to Mainland China then. I used to be a regular at the one at Saki Naka way back when it opened (My friend & I would be there almost every week), till one day we had the jumbo prawns there and we got - how do I put it, a bit "gaseous". Thinking it was a one off, we went again, and this time not only got "gaseous" but "liquid" as well!!

That stopped our visits to Mainland. So it was with a lot of trepidation, and a lot of convincing from friends that "this one is really good", that I walked into the one at Andheri opp Cinemax And it didn't disappoint!! The dim sums, the prawns in salt pepper, the chicken - good stuff. Not too expensive, and the quality remains consistent.

Its not gourmet chinese, suitably tailored to the Indian palate - and they have a decently stocked bar as well. I celebrated my birthday there with my parents recently - came back feeling like a king :) - small birthday cake with candles, free darsan and happy birthday on the speakers!! Well done :)

good food but not so good service

We love mainland china, especially their awesome Sunday buffet. From past experience we know that landing up there without a reservation is like wasting an hour of your life. So this Sunday we made a reservation for 2 30 pm and reached there dot on time. What followed was something that put me off forerver. The hostess confirmed our reservation, but said we would have to wait for a couple of minutes as the patrons at our table were just paying their bill. So we waited. and waited and waited. and waited. Everytime I asked her, she said "just a couple of minutes more, madam". Finally at 3 15, i lost it. Went up to her and told her that if I had to wait for 45 minutes even after making reservation, I might as well not have made one. And even then, the only thing she could say was "just a couple of minutes madam!!" Aaarghhh.... To add to our woes, people who walked in without a reservation, got a table before us. When we finally got our table (After 50 minutess of waiting), i had lost all appetite. Why bullshit your customer? If you know it will take 50 minutes, tell me that in the beginning. Or don't accept reservations. Or both. I am going to think twice before visiting this place again. Great food notwithstanding.

Must visit

Been there for the Sunday buffet. It's amazing. Food 5/5. Staff 5/5. Ambience 5/5. Today's spread was a seafood lover's heaven. Alas I'm allergic to seafood. The rest of the spread was great. But I must complement the staff. The place was full but they were attentive to each n every of your needs. Hats off guys ...keep it up. At 550 with tax n a pint of beer, it's a steal.

Value for Money

The first thing that hits you when you enter this place, is the ambience. Very chinese...reminds you of a spa...the calm wood furniture and moderately dim lightings, puts you at ease.
Dressing well is mandatory, but high income level is not. The food is delicious, moderately priced, and is served by good waiters. However, the service is a bit slow. Quantity wise, it is pretty good too... Most of the other patrons doggie-bagged the excess, so feel free to do so yourself!!

The minimum price on the menu is 120 and goes all the way up to 500 (for seafood). The dessert section is decent...but lacks in varieties of chocolate dishes. However, the sizzling brownie with ice cream is a must have!!

Dinner for 4, in my case, went till 2500, drinks included. So to all of you who want to visit this place..go ahead ! Bon Appetite!

Good food!

Have been going to Mainland China now for almost 3-4 years now (since I have lived next door for a good part of that time) and have yet to face any disappointment till date.
The food is good and the service is also reasonable though prices have been increased at least twice since I first started visiting. However, that is the price one perhaps pays for good food :)
I recommend General Tao's chicken - excellent - however do ask for extra gravy since it comes with less of the same.
The other dish worth trying out is the Sizzling Brownie with ice-cream - simple heavenly...

Great Food but forgettable service

Mainland China is quite consistent in its f&b quality between all outlets, a feat extremely difficult to achieve. Same goes with this outlet. The food is great on most days, but the service needs some improvement. We dared to make a complaint of a particular chicken dish and the server, manager, chef, etc. etc. kept on coming to our table to find out why we did so. Oh my god!! most restaurants don't even bother asking once, but here was an irony. We had to forget about the rest of the experience while talking to all these people!!!

A complete let down

I have always been an avid fan of Mainland China until i started visiting this Andheri outlet. If I keep aside the food (which is outstanding and makes me go back to the restaurant) this particular outlet is a complete disgrace to the chain. The service is pathetic, disarrayed and so painful that the joy of dining such delightful food goes away. Even worst, the restaurant swarms with service staff running in all possible directions - completely contrary to the basics of a fine-dining restaurant. You will at times feel you are sitting in a sophiscated Udipi restaurant. During my last visit, I had left my comments which attempted to highlight the deficiencies. Non-receipt of any acknowledgement from the chain has 2 logical inferences, either the comments card was suppressed and did not reach the intended recipients or the chain does not have a process of noticing an attrition and pre-empt the same. There is so much of inconsistency between 2 outlets in the same city! Overall, I am disappointed. Feedback on the "Comments Form" in their website - 1. Can the customer not be anything but "Clerk" (!!), "Manager", "Sales Executive", "Director", "Managing Director" and "Chairman"? Did someone even apply his/her mind while creating these values? 2. Their customer, as it appears to me, cannot be born before 1970 or his spouse be born before 1980!! Looks like the content or the tabs did even go through some basic sanity check!
Anyways, time to move on and try my luck with the Aromas and Gates of China!

great chinese food!!!!!

This place rocks!!!!! Since it is close to my work place have been there many a times. Though not authentic chinese food (do we actually like it???) its the best your palette can have. I recommend their lunch buffet. Priced somewhere between 325/- - 350/- on weekdays and around 425-450/- on weekends. But its VFM. The choice in both Veg. & Non-Veg is extensive. You can find crabs, prawns, fish, chicken, lamb in the main course. Also the starters are fairly good. Dim-sums are a must try!!! They also serve Satay with peanut sauce. Rice and Noodles (especially butter-chilli noodles is the best to go with your main course). Desert section also has lots of choice. I like the fried noodles with vanilla ice-cream. Also try the different kinds of cakes they offer. The staff is kind of mixed. Some are arrogant but some of them are really very polite and pay you attention. Best part is they serve starters and soup on the table. Highly recommended for Chinese lovers!!!!!!!! Have a blast!!!!!!!

Excellent Chinese food!

I had been to the Mainland China restaurant in Andheri (East) earlier and had come out less than impressed, but the one on Andheri (West) is much much better…Been there twice - once for dinner on a weekend night and once for the Sunday lunch buffet...

Expectedly, the waiting time for dinner on weekend was really high, but the food and ambience were totally worth it…The place is pretty big and the tables are not crowded together, giving enough privacy…As for the food, almost everything was really good…The steamed momos are mouthwatering...I also strongly recommend another of their starters made of american corn fried in batter - very tasty...Chinese starters of course go really well with drinks and they have a couple of interesting cocktails to try…

If the a la carte dinner was impressive, the lunch buffet was something else altogether...The soup and starters were good as usual...The choice in main course was just too much! Apart from the fried rice and noodles (one each for veg and non-veg), there were eight types of main course dishes - veg and non-veg each! And most of them were pretty good...The dessert spread was decent with the perfunctory honey fried noodles thrown in...In any case we were too full with the food, to try out too many of the desserts...

As for price, the dinner was quite expensive (6500 bucks for 5 with drinks), while the lunch buffet was good value for money (around 500 bucks each)… All in all, one of the best Chinese restaurants I have visited in a long time and irrespective of the price, it’s a place I plan to visit often…

Good Chinese

Tried it out for the first time last year in Oct, 2nd Oct to be precise, on insistence of a friend since they were renovating the restaurant. Decided to try out a soup & starter since no drinks were being served; ended up with practically a complete meal. The Dim Sum were great, particularly the steamed ones ~ both vegetarian & chicken. The soup, just the right quantity & extremely piping hot, the way I prefer. The fried chicken rice was great, not oily at all....The dessert pretty good. Service awesome...They delayed the sauce for dim sum; when pointed out, the half eaten plate of dim sum were whisked away & replaced with fresh sauces(Am sure lot of other restaurants do it but this was done by the waiter~~ great initiative & trust) Am waiting to revisit it again with family!

Been there a couple of times & have never been disappointed.

Good ambiance, service - food lacks some flare

Thumbs up to Mainland China for their ambiance and service. The restaurant is very classy and frequented by a well-to-do crowd. The cocktail menu is commendable, but the wine list could use the help of a wine afficionado.

Started with some Dim Sum (vegetable dumplings) and it easily was the best item ordered. This was followed up by Veg. Haka Noodles, at the waiter's recommendation - turned out the noodles lacked character and were incredibly plain. The Broccoli, Corn and Water Chestnuts in some Ginger Chili Sauce was palatable, but did not stand out either. There was some Seafood and Wine festival going on at Mainland China, for which they had a special menu - perhaps their strength lies there. Will have to try it next time. Finally, the dessert menu did not look inspiring enough, so we passed.

All in all, Mainland China does a fantastic job of all things not food - ambiance, service, decor, etc. When it comes to the actual cuisine, it's above average.

Good Sunday Buffets here...

I have been here a couple of times.... But the best of all meals has been the sunday buffet that I had here once. I guess it was around Rs.500 per head for this chinese buffet... included salads, starters, rice, noodles, gravies and the best of all was the dessert... Vanila ice cream with fresh fruits...Dont really know what they called it..but was GREAT! Service is good and ambience is comfy. So folks try this place on one of the sundays... make sure you make it there before 3.00pm.
