Just a few days back, I went for a lovely dinner with friends at Mainland China, the one at Tardeo. If you want to eat authentic Chinese food, Mainland China is the place to visit. It being a Saturday, we had to make the reservations in advance. You cant barge into this popular eatery on a weekend night and expect to find a table just waiting for you.
On reaching there, the receptionist escorted us to our table. You get a different vibe when you enter the restaurant, maybe its the excitement of getting to eat the most amazing Chinese food ever (or maybe its just me). The Staff is very friendly, and they are willing to help you out with the menu, although, we knew exactly what we order. Another thing I love about this place is that, they give you a bowl full of 'Kimchi', to snack on, while you wait for your food. Kimchi is a Tangy- Spicy Chinese Pickle consisting of Chinese Cabbage and Spring Onions, marinated in Soy Sauce and Vinegar, with Ginger, Garlic, Chilies etc. Also, their pickled cucumbers and carrots are well marinated yet crunchy.
For starters, we ordered the 'Hunan Prawns'. They were actually shrimps, perfectly cooked and fresh! The shrimps were pan fried with the extra spicy Hunan Sauce. It came with a Side Salad and a Schezwan Dip.
We also ordered for a 'Chicken Siu Mai' a Chinese Dumpling. The filling consisted of Minced Chicken, Ginger and some Spring Onions. They served a pungent Mustard Sauce and some Soy Sauce with it.
For the main course we ordered for the Tsing Hoi Chicken, which is a red coloured gravy, with a lovely portion of Chicken, veggies and not to forget, Mushrooms! We asked the waiter what rice would go with the gravy and he suggested us the Black Pepper Fried Rice. We ordered for Rice as none of us is a big fan of noodles, although I have heard that they serve really awesome Pan Fried Noodles. We cleared the rice, but there was some gravy leftover, so we decided to order a Half a Plate of Steamed Rice. To our surprise, even the half plate was as good as the entire portion. We had a hard time finishing up the food, as I am totally against wasting stuff, and especially when it comes to food from Mainland.
We asked the waiter to get the check, he approached us and asked us if we would like to order some dessert. We were tempted to (I think even he noticed), but there was absolutely no place in our tummies. But then we thought there's no harm in sharing it between the three of us. We ordered for a Sizzling Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream and a Dash of Chocolate Sauce! We were in for another surprise when the waiter said that the Dessert was 'On the House'! Have been there 'n' number of times and will always keep visiting!

First, we ordered the Crab Meat Soup, which was absolutely fresh, and did not stink even one bit, like most seafood does.

Will be going again.
You can never go wrong with mainland china. No matter what you order its always goinf to taste good. We have experimented so many times at mainland china and have ordered all sorts of dishes and loved each and every one of it . The betki fish , duck, the asweome dimpsums and dumplings are to die for. We loved the soups (chicken with coconut base) and deserts especially the lichi with ice cream and the browny with ice cream. The waiters are doing a great job with suggesting the correct dishes as per the persons liking. Overall excellent.
Stinky and dingy...
Went there on a Saturday night. After we were seated, noticed the place had a mild smell of urine. The mat-like cover on the ceiling was wet. The place was packed, but the black walls and closely-placed tables gave the impression of a cavern. The service was rushed and scatter-brained. But I don't suppose that's going to stop the moneyed sheeple from crowding into this over-priced place.
Amazing..... Super place + food
Went there for buffet.... The service was amazing with fantastic food... I dont like traditional Chinese food however, it was just perfect.... Plz try this place and rest assure that you wont be disappointed..

Thank you for patronising Mainland China, Sobo Central. It is indeed a pleasure having you with us and we appreciate the time & effort taken by you to communicate your experience.
While a gesture of appreciation is the best form of motivation, without constructive feedback from distinguished patrons such as yourself, it would be difficult to constantly redefine our services. It has always been our endeavor to provide our guests with an experience that is high in both quality and standards and repose the faith placed
Mainland China is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants and I have been frequenting the one at Saki Naka and the newer one at Powai for a long long time now. I visited the Mainland China in Sobo Central mall, Tardeo for the first time last week. And I still shudder at the thought. I went there with a friend from the US. We sat down in one comfortable corner of the restaurant and my friend went to the restroom to freshen up. when he came back his eyes popped out!! There was a HUUGE rat happily running around all over the place. Not even a mouse, a huge rat!! Then the people on the table next to us told us that they told the guys from the restaurant about it, but no one even seemed inclined to do anything about it. We decided to leave immediately. and as we went out, we told the lady at the reception that there was a rat. She looked embarrassed but there was not even an articulate apology! She mumbled something under her breath and looked away! I really wish this experience wasn't at the Mainland China because I wonder if I can ever go back there again without thinking of the pet rat.

Great ambience and food
Had a super dinner!! Great food - very flavorful... even though i am not a fan of chinese food - i loved it...
Great decor - loved the black wood fusion... The entire experience made my birthday even more special!!
Did not have to worry about the bill as it was my birthday and being treated ;) :) :) but yeah the poor guy had to shell out big bucks!!
Super decor. Great food. Courteous service.
The 2 of us went there to celebrate an occasion. Expectations were high, considering the high standards set by their Pune branch and recently their Andheri one. I had a thought at the back of my mind that I would be slightly disappointed. But nevertheless we ordered. 2 Drinks. One was their special called Pom Pom and the other was the Sgroppia.
The sgroppia was disappointing to say the least, and the pom pom was like an extra sweet version of a Cosmopolitan (tasted like it)
Fast forward to the starters, we ordered pan fried chicken and mushroom dumplings, which just melted in the mouth. The portions could have been larger though!
For main course we ordered the Chicken Pan fried noodles and the Fish in Lemon chilly sauce. And my oh my! These 2 just took our breath away. The fish tickled our palate like no other, with it's almost Indian taste, with an oriental aftertaste that lingered for a long time! The fish was the bengali Betki which was done just right.
The pan fried noodles were perfect too. Not too much oil, and lots of chicken. Just how we wanted it. Slightly bland, but that's how pan fried noodles are supposed to taste!
We generally don't sin and order desserts when out. But the main course was so awesome, that we decided to try out the Steamed Chicken Dumpling. TRUST ME. What a HEAVENLY melt in the mouth feeling!
4.5/5 from me. The cocktails can be given a miss. I'd say, do that. Since you keep more space for the food!
PS: The complimentary Kimchi and pickled vegetables are a welcome beginning to a good meal ;-) The chinese tea is bland, though.
Classy ambiance - Great Food
Mainland China, Kolkata's finest Asian restaurant finally got itself a place in town for the SoBo to not drive to Andheri anymore. They are located in the ex-Crossroads mall now SoBo Central at Haji Ali.
Celebrated my in-law's anniversary over dinner on a Monday night. And boy for a Monday, you would be lucky to have got a table without reservation.
The place gives you fantastic first impressions. Black, gray and silver - A chique combination makes it a really classy place. A place you would like to bring that very special set of guests, a place you would like to be seen at on a weekend.
Something very interesting about the menu that may grab your attention - the prices are in words and not figures. I guess, makes them a little pleasant on the eyes. What say?
So what did we eat
* Shanghai Spring Roll
* Mushroom in Garlic Chilli [Must have]
* Claypot - exotic veg in chili basil sauce
* Tofu black mushroom Bamboo shot in black bean sauce [must have - very large and nice chewy pieces of the black mushroom, probably one of the best I have tasted]
* Pot rice
Quantities are good and the service was exceptionally fast considering they were packed that night.
They have a very good arrangement of tables on one side of the restaurant where the tables are placed on a little height and away from the main dining area. gives a good sense of privacy and perfect for the big date night.
Oh and if you don't happen to visit the loo - besides the food they've got some useful things on their menu, just incase.
Verdict - highly recommended place. great ambiance & some really good food.
What e-mail address to I mail you, my contact details? It may seem inappropriate, to post it, in a public forum.

Great Service, Averahe Fare
Great service. I wish the prawns were more visible, in size. They're minute. Miniscule. Shrimps, not prawns. Also, the spread isn't very impressive. Buffet is not very good. Otherwise, the place is not bad.

At the onset let me apologise to you for the disappointing experience at Mainland China; but I think there is a small confusion. We don't have a buffet at Mainland China, Tardeo. Is it the unit you visited?
its the best chinese restaurant i've been to in a looong long time.... i was pretty much done with asian food... and this place is nice... the staff is incredibly attentive... and for a restaurant in south bombay it hasn't got any "airs" yet.... the food is superb... if you're a vegetarian you shouldn't miss the crispy zucchini with pickled chili.... the food all in all is fabulous.. and so is the service... its also got interesting decor....
Plants a firm Flag in sobo
It has finally come to South Mumbai. Went there a few weeks back. A word of advice - dont try and access it thru the CR mall - bcos there is no access. The door is adjacent to McD.
The restaurant look is dark - would have expected a little more play of the favorite Chinese red. But a great way to use the blank wall by putting the 2 seaters there in a secluded place, along with lighting along the wall. Well done.
As we entered the place, on a Sat afternoon, was hit by a very strong smell - could not place it (similar to the food courts in other East Asias cities, may be fish sauce or something. Possibly the ventilation was not working well.
The service was exemplary, and the food was excellent. We ordered the 8 season/ island (forget the name) soup - very nice. Besides that the spicy chicken and rice were excellent.
I am definitely going to be back here.
i've been there twice: lunch on a Saturday, dinner on a weekday... excellent service both times! very attentive and cheerful staff... over the course of two meals, we tried the veg. sui mai dumplings (decent), a chicken starter whose name i forget (very good), sweet and sour chicken (good), a stir fried chicken appetizer with spring onion (not so good), veg. hakka noodles (good), veg. fried rice (truly wonderful! not oily at all, unlike the typical Hakka chinese we get at other places)...
Absolutely sumptous food!
My visit to MC was random, with zero expectations, and I am delighted to say they were rocking!! The food sweeps you off your feet, and the smiling waiters make the visit even more pleasant. I am alwayss looking forward to more of Mainland China! Cheers to the Chef, management and the team!
Chinese Food served with Indian Hospitality
Being in Mainland China, Tardeo is like an instant transformation from the Hustle Bustle of the Tardeo traffic to a Royal Chinese Dining room. The ambiance is exquisite, with Giant Statues of Chinese Warriors guarding the tables in the room. The restaurant is very large with comfortable seating, soothing lights, largely authentic decor, and there is also a niche patio like area for couples who can enjoy their meals in seclusion.
Their menu is very very elaborate and neatly divided into sections (Veg, Poultry, Seafood, Appetizers etc) but for some reason the prices are not printed in Numbers but in Words, while its a smart move from their perspective, i would urge you to look at it as well.
We had ordered Mongolian Skewered Lamb for appetizers, and for the mains we ordered, Chicken in Yellow Bean Sauce with Exotic Vegetables along with Fragrant Pot Rice. The Mongolian Skewered Lamb was succulent and enriched in rich flavors which was amply heated up by a live mini barbecue. The Fragrant Pot rice was aromatic, and subtly flavored. The Chicken in Yellow bean sauce lacked vegetables as we would have expected. So when we pointed this out, the Maitre D, promptly had it remade for us. The portions are generous and good for two people.
We ended the meal with Hot Chocolate Rolls with Vanilla Ice Cream which was very unconventional for a dessert, but nevertheless enjoyable.
Overall, the service is fantastic, the waiters are friendly and prompt, they serve you Chinese tea throughout your meal which keeps good company in between orders. The restaurant manager will promptly come up to you in case you express any concern with the food or the service. This is a restaurant that takes its food and its service very seriously.
The place gets crowded by 9 so its better to make prior reservations if you don't want to wait. They have a built in 10% service charge. Damage for a meal for two without alcohol is around Rs.1400. Also, they don't offer any Fortune Cookies at the end of the meal which often is a gentle distraction from the the bill.
I would definitely go back for more.
Awesome Food, Pathetic Service
Was there last week for lunch with my husband. We were made to sit obviously at a table for two, if anyone"s been there will notice that its a sort of secluded on a higher deck and that could probably be the reason for the awful service. We had to keep trying to get their attention throughout our meal and finally it took 25 mins for our dessert to arrive. Food is awesome but sadly
the service counts too.
