Masala Mantar Reviews

Main Course is a Misnomer

Four of us visited Masala Mantar on May 10, 2013. Among starters, Murgh Chilli Garlic Kebab was excellent, whereas Gosht Seekh Kebab and Macchi Koliwada were just OK. However the major disappointment was with the main courses. Taste of both the dishes average but problem was with the quantity. Murgh Punjabi Tadka has a few small pieces and Bhuna Meat (Mutton) pieces were totally bony with hardly any meat. Generally after drinks and starters, 2 main courses would suffice but at Masala Mantar, you may have to consider ordering 4 main courses for four persons.

Excellent food

The food is delicious. Non-veg eaters will love the place. The service is also remarkable. The only thing i was uncomfortable with was the ambiance. The lights should have been brighter. Bright lights gives it a feel of a restaurant. If it wouldn't have been the lights,I would have rated this place a 5/5 :)

Good place

Went there last year during the monsoon. kinda nice place. Its air-conditioned nicely and the rice dishes are good. stick to the food. The drinks are expensive..........

Worth a visit

The first thing you notice about the place is the rustic interiors that has the kinda earthy, old style feel. Almost like a dhabba. So interiors are done up well which extends to the table where heaps of spices are part of table decor.

Its part of the same family of restaurants that owns pop tates and urban tadka so there is an expectation in terms of the quality of food and service. On the price and service and stuff available, you could easily find it very similar to urban tadka. In fact wouldnt be wrong to say thats its the same place with almost the same tasting food rather you may notice the similarities in taste and prices when you compare it to urban tadka.

Stuff to order - Their meat is quite good, tender and just melts. Drinks? Its the usual stuff....One can easily get surprised by the large portions of the dishes they serve

Good place to have Indian food

Its an Indian dhaba concept restaurant. The starters here are good.
Its recommended for larger groups as the place is really big and one gets seat quickly. The quantity of dishes is really good and is value for money.
Liquor served is a bonus for some too.The service here is really good and they dance for you if it happens to be your birthday.

The first time I visited this place that was newly opened, the food was not upto the mark. It was just about ok. As a critic I decided not to write any review and give this restaurant some time to settle down with the quality of food. Visited this place after two years with my family and the experience was disastrous. Here are the details:

Went for the lunch buffet. Imagine Baingan Bharta and Aloo Mutter for veg dishes. Common, we get these kind of food in Langar.
We were told of two veg starters, one in Paneer and One in Potato. The Potato starter never came till the end.
Then, the salad counter had two salads, one was russian and another freshly cut carrots and cucumber. The russian salad plate was empty and for 45 mins there was no refill.
In the non-veg section there was chicken curry. Similiar to russian salad, the chicken pieces were missing from the curry for almost 30 mins.
The service was pathetic. None of the managers or the staff was aware of what was happening. There was no co-ordination at all.
I am surprised to see 4 star rating for this restaurant. This place is definitely NOT worth a second visit as we do not expect Urban Tadka group to give us this kind of experience.
For all those people who want to spend less and they dont care if the service or food is just about ok, they are more than welcome to try this place.

value for money

an indian dhaba concept restaurant, with the taste being being on similar lines to urban tadka. always enjoy the starters here. there is a simplicity, casual 'un-fussiness' about the place, where i dont feel awkward if im dressed casually.
Recommended for larger groups planned at the last minute, as we usually get place , since its a relatively large restaurant.
liquor being served can be termed as a bonus for some too ;).

Nice Place to Dine...

One of the best North Indian food in north mumbai. I really like to coconut water infused with Vodka..simply superb and all time favourite. Most of the food serveed is really authentic and served in style. The ambience is very appealing and feel like visiting again and again..They do a amazing dance, if tis your birthday and kids simply love that dance....

Recommended place

Food- This restaurant serves north Indian food. We had ordered one Special Vegetable (subz..something) it was not so good. Achari paneer was very nice and soft.

Price- Above things plus few more things masala papad and a delicious kulfi cost us around Rs 600/ (For details visit

Ambience- This restaurant is well-spaced with lots of tables and yes they are not cramped. You can spend quality time with your family and friends. This one has a touch of ethnic look.

Service- The service here is really appreciable. The staff is on their toes to serve you. Also as an added thing, they have an astrologer (charge extra; Rs 100/pp) with whom you can chat about your future.

Further details visit

Good Punjabi Food

Best place to give a b'day party to your friends !!

Excellent Daal Makhni and Starters.

Was there last Thursday with my colleagues. One of my colleague was a first timer to Masala mantar while the other been here couple of times.
Ordered one Hungama Masala and One Tandoori Broccoli in starters. Hungama Masala was a bit spicy but liked by everyone.
Ordered one Daal Makhni, 1 lachha Parantha and 4 Plain Tandoori Roti's with 3 Masala Chaas.
We enjoyed our food a lot. Specially my colleague who doesn't like Daal Makhni kept licking his fingers.
Total damage to the wallet including starters, main course and chass was Rs.746 only and moreover they gave us Complementary dessert - Jalebi with Rabri. I love this place. I think i have been there more then 60times and every time its totally a different experience.

Was better before...lost in the crowd!

Was good for few years lost its glitter, now the staff are more interested to chat than to take order or get refills of water etc.Its going the urban tadka way, these guys have lost their sheen!!!

Avoidable, especially if your stomach is weak

I was recommended Masala Mantar by a few people, who advertised it as good north indian food. since, there are quite a few places, around andheri, most of which i have already explored, i send here, for a change.
the food was very oils, the spices were too string and raw, and there was soda, in the food. i am not sure i would be able to eat the food again.

I have found NBR to be a great developing company

Nbr Lan Developers And Builders.I would like to say special thanks to entire team who given chock-full support and friendly relationship on the whole period of the project. We are really happy being a part of Aradhana family along with Royal Splendours. 'ALL THE VERY BEST' to Royal Splendours team for their upcoming projects. Thank u So Much Nbr.

Ok food...bad location and service

Had gone there today with my parents...valet parking service sucks..the place is located in a run down building that instantly puts you off...the ambiance is ok...dimly lit...the waiters are least interested..most of them were busy watching the match...ordered for starters...a paneer achaari and chicken chatpata...the food turned out to be ok..paneer was uninspiring while the chicken was very spicy..left the hotel without ordering main course as my mom dint like the one really cared to ask us about the main course anyways...overall a very bad experience..would not recommend it for a family outing..

This joint does some what make up for the disappointment at Urban Tadka. Same feel and ambience with a twist. Beautifully decorated with stars, christmas decorations , etc. on Christmas Eve combined with christmas tunes of Jim Reeves and Boney M finish off with a projector showcasing highlights of the match = Great Ambience.
Personally not a fan of pungent food, but nevertheless the Chef's special Chicken Gulmohar was really good. Chicken Methi Murg was simply amazing and a must try.
Slightly overpriced but definitely worth a try from the chain of Urban Tadka & Pop Tates!

Bad Service...ok ok food...excellent ambiance

Saturday Evening 8.00....ordered masala mantar kebab was not so good...also ordered peshawari chicken wid roomali roti.....roti was not at all hot....still d gravy was good so.....well not at all a good place for foodies....

Bad food, Poor service, their claim is so so so untrue of serving punjabi food. I tried various dishes from their menu but none had any flavour of its own, they all were full of masala and artificial food colors.
On a serious note guys the place is not at all worth visiting.

pathetic place

The food was pathetic, the service was awful and the staff didnt bother to care a damn. the portions of the food are too much. Dont ever go there. its a highly overrated place.

valet thives...

There have been 3 laptops stolen from their valet service in the last 7 action taken by the hotel and the police had to arrest 2 of the staff. still no response from the hotel to compensate its customers in any way. Shameless people

One of the best in Mumbai for North Indian Food

Having stayed in North India for over 12 years, I am of the opinion that the restaurants that claim to serve North India food in Mumbai are really not so great. Amongst these, Masala Mantar came as a good surprise.

The food is good, the service is fast and the dhaba like atmosphere that they've tried to create is quite nice. Would definitely recommend anytime.

Good food and ambience

Burrp review made me try this retaurant for my Moms birthday and the most satisfying thing is she loved the food and enjoyed the evening.

Very Very bad

My experience at masala mantr has been one of the worst ever in Mumbai.
The waiters took my dish (murg punjabi tadka), hid it behind three other waiters and exchanged it with another bowl with less quantity. This is one of the worst act I have seen ever. The manager after was apologetic to just the pint as if he is doing a favor to me by replacing the dish.
Worst experience ever.
Please think twice before going there.

Good Food Good Ambience

I visited Masla Mantar for first time on 3rd July' 11 after reading the reviews on The place turned out to be far better than my expectations both in terms of Food and Ambience. I would recommend this place to people who want to try good North Indian food.

As far as the food goes - The a la carte menu (which we opted for) is very decent and has a good choice of both veg and non-veg food. Of a few dishes we tried - Sarso ka saag and Amritsari Kulcha were awesome!

Ambience - is that of a 'Dhaba' and is very spacious.

Service - is slow....

Mouthwatering Food !!

It was so tasty, mouthwatering food, have tried it more than 3 times, but every time i loved the taste, ambiance is good, serving time is normal and worth visiting 15 days a week...Ha Ha..if not then atleast in a month once...Yes, the food was so tasty, we reached late there once around 11.30 and kitchen timings are till 12.00 bt they made sure that we should get everything on our table before they pack up their kitchen...

Definitely would re-visit in sometime.. :)

Great Food - VFM

Visited this place last week after wanting to try it for ages... the best item was the sarsowala fish (starter).. out of the world! Don't know if I got the name right ...
even the yellow dal was excellent..
the others at my table had the kheema pav which was apparently extremely spicy but tasty...
We had a couple of other dishes too which were above average- don't remember the names. All in all, a good place for a heavy North Indian meal.. and VFM too ..

Good Food...Good Ambiance...Bad Service!

A large restaurant with a good ambiance. Food is very tasty but the restaurant needs to improve a lot on its service. Food, Drinks and for that matter even water was served after a long wait and after repeated requests.

Great food/Value for money and nice ambience

I always give a food joint its due credit if it's doing what it's meant to catering to the right segment and having basics like hygience and service right. I think Masala mantar strikes the right balance, right from when you enter, organize valet system, enough place for waiting people to sit (weekends its mostly half an hour waiting, proof enough that it's a hit) and some nice ambience with something or the other happening to give it that loud Punjabi color and feel, at the same time not disturbing.

Masala Mantar, is from the same chain of Urban Tadka and Happy Singh ( for those of you who have tried it).You go past wash basins, kitsch, posters and find yourself under dangling ping pong balls of light. An interesting ceiling, made of - hold your breath -egg trays, yellow-and-red wooden chairs (reminding you of your nursery school days)

As about the food, it's the best -robust, lusty flavours leap from the generous portions of the roundly spiced Punjabi fare. Be it the Laal Mutton, my favourite succulent Mint Nimbu Chicken (do do try this starter for sure, you'll just come back for this) and the quick service, with waiter always smiling and giving a tip or two about the dishes

Rates are decent too, alcohol foreign brands about 200/- for a 30ml, while some of their other drinks like aam panna/iced tea can be also worth a try. Overall cost for 2 people with drinks is about 1.2k while w/o drinks would be about 600-800.

Not a 5 star rating coz I hond those for some of my favourite resturants in Delhi, but this one is what Mumbai has the best to offer for Indian/Mughlai Chicken/Mutton lovers

Nothing special

The food is great taste wise but den i hv to choos between my money and tastebuds. Ambianc is quite ok...its good for a party day coz of its hall...

Good Quality and Decently priced

Just came back from this place and still raving about the food. Went there after a lot of hesitation but my first experience turned out to be great. Good food, good service and decently prices. A meal for 2 costs us approx 650/-
Def would go back for the great chicken

dhaba ishtyle!

I went for dinner after watching Band Baaja Baarat and had this whole "dhinchaak" feeling. The ambience complemented. It is comparatively a large restaurant and the interiors are dhaba like. So is the food - and well the service!!

Daal Makhani was good. Aloo Dum Masala and Bhunahua Subzi were also good. Somehow I thought that the menu should have had a description of each item. That was missing from most of the items on the menu.

Service was just about OK. While main course came well in time - somehow the biryani took unusually too long. A waiter was continously standing at the edge of our table which I found a little disturbing. Oh and yes.. somwhere during the meal, a waiter took a board with tiny bells in it and started dancing in front of a distant table. It was looking very stupid - but I must say it requires a lot of courage and guts to do that!

Overall - a nice experience... will want to go again over and over.

Punjabi dhol + Bhangra + Tasty food

Yes, that's what they have for the new year celebrations Punjabi dhol + Bhangra + Tasty food. Went to this place with colleagues for dinner on last Wednesday. Despite a weekday the place was fully packed. Luckily three of us get the table.

As soon as we ordered the starters then suddenly heard the sound of Punjabi dhol and asked the manager whats going on so he told us that.... as new year is approaching we just starting celebrating little early. Listing to Punjabi dhol while sipping your drinks .. i have no words to express my feelings.

Coming on the food part as i said above as always food was just out of the world. One of the best place to have panju food in Mumbai. In starters we ordered one Hungama Masala and Main course is Sarson da saag and Makkai di roti along with few drinks.

Overall as always had a good experience. The damage to the wallet was around about Rs.3400/-, drinks costs us too much this time.. but worth spending the money.

Sarson da Saag and Makkai di Roti again

Just came back from Masala Mantar after having Sarson da saag and Makkai di roti along with two starters - Tandoori Broccoli and Tandoori Mushroom with Main course as Sarson da saag and Makkai di roti.

I don't have any words to explain about the food. It was just out of the world and damn tasty. Will gonna come back again with office gang to enjoy Punjabi food.

Went there in Happy hours, so get 1 beer free with 1 beer (1+1). Total bill shoots upto 1500 which includes - two starters (broccoli and mushrooms), 3 sarson da saag and 6 Makkai di roti and 1 lovely aunty da parantha.

Sarson da Saag and Makkai di Roti

Burrpers winters are here and the best time to have the sarson da saag and makkai di roti has arrived and the best sarson da saag you have ever had is @ Masala Mantar. I have already eaten the saag twice or thrice at this place and i can say that every time i enjoyed more than my previous visit.

Went to this place on Thursday night with colleagues total 5 of us to have sarson da saag and makkai di rotti. Reached this place @10.00pm and in starters we ordered Hungama Masala, forget the name of the other starters.

In main course it has to be sarson da saag with extra white makkhan(butter). Saag was so tasty that in the group of 5 we ordered 3 saags and 10 makkai di rottis which was followd by Jalebi's and rabri as complementary.

Really a good place to enjoy the panju food. A must visit for all the panju's and peoples who love north-indian food.

Great place + Great Food @ Happy Hours

Went with my office colleagues and truly enjoyed our evening at this place.

Located in Andheri, the place has a very 'interesting' interior with big wooden log tables and chairs coupled with some interesting bollywood caricatures. You must visit the place to experience it.

Visiting the place at happy hours is a great option for all those who enjoy their drink, because you get a drink free for every drink ordered. Apart from this the place has some fantastic punjabi food. Going with a bunch of friends allowed us to order a lot of starters. They kept coming with each being simple delicious and better than the previous one.

The staff is also very friendly and warm. If you are lucky you might even spot a celebrity. So go ahead and add this to your must visit list of restaurants in mumbai.

Nice place, good food!

What I like most is the no nonsense atmosphere and the elbow room, tables are well spaced and the place is fairly big.

Food is good, nothing exceptional, but hot, tasty and served with a smile.

Totally wiped clean everything that was ordered.

Desi Style

Have gone to this place 3 times ..... Great ambience.... Great Startes choice.....only slighlty felt shud be better in main course.....Otherwise great place to spend evening........

Roller Coaster Ride

We went there on a weekend and still could get a table for 10 which pleased us no end...but that pleasing feeling didn't last for a long time. I and my husband were the first to arrive in the group so we ordered for chaas..A chaas which took 30 minutes to arrive after reminding the captain twice and complaining to the manager once..phew....

The menu is almost unreadable was do they deuce that we can read the dishes on the menu and their description...

Well with no other go we relied on the suggestions made by the captain and the food turned out to be quite decent..The starter portions though are only for bulimics..

Mockatils ..kala mantar was yum yum and cocktails were also good, said my good friends..

The crowning glory were the crisp and hot jalebis...finger licking good..

So it started low but ended on a high note..

Here is my rating:

Service - 2/5
Ambience - 4/5
Food- 4/5

Not a bad deal if your willing to put up with the initial laxity..

truely never again

Good Food..

Good Food & nice Ambience....
Yes very noicy..... staff decent....

Good mixture of spices...

Awful service v/s Good food

9 of us visitied this place on saturday evening , no doubt the ambiance and food are very good the service on that particular day was terrible!
The paneer tikkis, palak shorba and mushroom starters were awesme... thats the start... we ordered for the main course at 9.45 pm and it came on our table at 10.35 pm! so the one star less for the service...
The biryani and black dal are delicious! Paneer makhni was strictly ok... in all 4/5 for food... we got compensated by hot jalebis and rabdi for the delay in food (or u never know it is complimentary ;-))
The rates are also very impressive... without drinks we paid an average of 375 per head...

YUM mantar!

the food is yummy! Chicken tikka and masala mantar special paneer was delicious! fish preparations r also good...the recommendations made by the waiter were good...loved the jalebi and kulfi for dessert!

Veg food

Well the ambience is classic.......has the touch of the village......egg stands on the ceiling.............raw vegetables lying outside............munshis table............n much more.........have 2 screens for the IPL.

Do not order masala the roasted papad is complimentary along with onions.....can have with their green chatni and the orange dahi chutney.......u can make your own masala papad..........they keep serving the papad and onion as soon as it gets over.

Jwala panner......panner was too soft n yummy.
Can try ne other paneer starter.

Haryali tikki...was classis again....authentic taste....had such tikkis after a long time.

they have the tikki festival.....we dint try....but can go for tht.

Main course:
Pls order bhooni subzi(check the menu card).....some sort of mix was the best........have never had such a vegetable in my life......

Rogani paneer was decenet unless u r fond of tomato gravy.....insted go for paneer makhni....its universally the best at every place.

Dal makhni was again too good....thiick urban tadkas........infact better than that......will try the dal tadka next time.

go for the amritsari kulcha for a munch.
Do no order roomali roti....becomes hard.
lacha paratha n garlic nan were good.

Pudina raita was worth it.thick raita with the pudina taste...but actually its the thicker version of the chutney which they serve it with papad.......but still can go for this raita.or ne other raita.

Oder the handi biryani.....awsome.

Were too full......otherwise wud have ordered jalebi.

If its a bday......a waitor dances in front of u....with a slate in hand.....he dances like a mad fellow.its a little embarrasing for the bday person........but its hilarious...all the tables have their eyes on u.

Bill was too less:
A litlle above 200 per person.

but if u go for drinks and non will come btw 300-400.

Service was a let down only for our table....bad luck......otherwise....considering how big is the place...........service ought to be a liitle slow to an extent.......but not an u can have unlimited complimentary papad with onions and chutney.

Ho Hum..

Like a lot of North Indian restaurants this place also gives off the rustic vibe. The decor is nicely done without going over the top or trying to look like a dhaba. There was a huge screen where the IPL match was being screened.

Food: The tikki festival was on so ordered the palak and corn tikki. Was good but the green chatni was even better. They serve papad and salad along with the food. Ordered the panner rojani and dal tadka. The paneer was soft but the gravy was very average. The dal tadka was yum.

Drinks: The jal jeera was nice but the sugar cane juice took the cake. Sweet cold and delicious.

Service: The staff was super efficient maybe a bit more than required.

You'd rather go to Urban Tadka or Angeethi for better food.

yummy complimentaries..

really good food..dum aloo was perfect!
and paneer achari was excellent..
the best part of the meal were the jalebis and the rabri!
the waiters were polite..the only hick was -it was a sat nite! so it was awfully noisy with loud music and clatter of pans and other utensils..i appreciate the authentic set up however sometimes the noise can get totally annoying!

The best place to have Punjabi cuisine!

To begin with, Masala Mantar or MM as we fondly call it, is a regular dinner hangout place for us. I discovered this place by chance as the staff from Urban Tadka diverted us here as always it was running full. And from that day onwards MM hasnt disappointed. Right from the ambience, to the courteous staff, the well laid out decors and lighting, its simply awesome. Apart from this, its quite big and the traditional furniture is a nifty little touch which goes a long way in experiencing that Punjabi Dhaba style atmosphere.

Now to the main thing, the menu..the all time favorite( a must have) is Sarson chicken alongwith Lachcha Parathas or Makke di roti. It simply tickels the taste buds and given the generous quantity they give its worth its price. Simply smackalicious. Apart from this, the tamatar chicken or the MM paneer or the tandoori mushrooms are oh so yummy! Well cooked, tender and juicy. The menu is very compact, and the items to select are a chosen few, its better than having a long list and not delivering. Thats the speciality of this place. To top it off, the daal khichdi is always cooked lovingly and the dal makhni is by far the best I have had anywhere in Mumbai. so smooth:) For desserts one can settle for a few choices ranging from Jalebi with rabdi is best and served hot all the time or kulfi. But again they dont specialise in ice cream do they?!

Very recently I had one of my best experiences with MM. Had been for dinner( am a regular customer), so got one new starter as complimentary and Jalebi rabdi complimentary after I had the usual suspects for main course. And the total damage came down to around 900 for 3 persons which was economical and complete vfm at the same time. Apart from this one more fact that you may quite often bump into tv and bollywood celebs here, do take your cams along:)

All in all, Masala mantar simply rocks..the food is great, the service though languid is good, the waiters listen to you and it is that way as its little of a fine dining no hurries!

Highly recommended for everyone.

Excellent food and ambiance

I regularly go to this place with family and friends, we have always had great experience. They serve best sarson ka saag, we have many times during winter season. I have ordered food for home delivery also many times, its been good always.

Kuch panna hai to kuch khona hai

Awesome Food- went with family and Friends- not much on Veg- but for Non-Veg- Suffiecient Qty- but little on the upper side- almost same as Urban Tadka- (must be as its their sister concern). Any ways good ambi/food.

Went with the family to have makke ki roti and sarson ka saag in particular...and let me tell u the saag was fantastic. and even the appetizers tandoori broccoli and mushrooms were very good.If u want to taste the saag then visit now because may be in next 15 dayz u will not get it as it is seasonal. So people planning for the dinner tonite just try masala mantar..IT ROCKS !!!

I went to this place for a quick dinner. And I was in and out of the place in 45 min. The food I had was really good specially the Chk. Teriwala. The only problem with this place is that it has a limited menu.
Service: 4/5
Ambience 4/5

Good place!!!

The ambience, right from the waiting area to the washroom was very well done. It was neat & simple. One must try the coolant drink [coconut water preparation] & the butter garlic prawns was to die for... Overall the place was good, food was gr8, ambience was nice.. BTW forgot to mention that little fellow who used do that jiggy act for a minute or so with a board in his had for every table where there was a celebration, it was quite funny but nice.

What a waste

Most pathetic service in mumbai......
It took 20 minutes for the bill & the waiters had absoluelty no clu of what's going on.Infact shared my feedback with the restautant manager who was dumb struck & didnt even reply back.........

m loving it!

the reception was well mannered..they have a decent waiting area will has been tasteful decor..the whole place has been very well brought up wid village charm and has really nice aura about it..the service was kinda good evn on a busy day..though the food is a quite pricey its worth the ambience and the deserves a visit atleast...nutshell : dont think twice about going there..

masala mantra has the mantra for happy stomachs

am a regular at masala mantra the staff is v courteous explaining in details about the food, albeit pricing is a tad bit high but i guess its worth the price with ambiance being rustic n all, they made us all feel v comgy n were v polite fussing over us which made us feel really special, they have dicounts for lunch & few other stuff, there simply white kababs are awesome but portions could be huge, there panner makhanwala is quiet good along with butter makhanwala i found the gravy to be thin the 1 time after telling the waiter about they have alwyz seen to it its been to my choice, garlic naan are heavenly, also if 1 decides to celebrate some occasions they are happy to take part in your celebrations & a special dance is performed by the sweet waiters which is really sporting of them,i give 10 for there sporty atitude, they rock!

The Magic worked!

Is it the Indian cuisine? Is the warm ambience & tasteful decor? Is it the awesome service? This place works its magic - and how! Masala Mantar is perfect to take your family out or on a weekday date. Music isn't too loud - conversations can be heard for a change! The food is good - not as great as Urban Tadka - but decent. Go for the Kebab Gosht. We had our fill on starters itself. Will try the main course next time. Must try the Coolant - a fab coconut water drink with herbs and served in the coconut!! What's fantastic is that this place is HUGE - and every area has its own ambience. They have a banquet area as well definitely thinking of hosting a party there soon. The warm colors of this place makes it great to take out snaps. My take - best kept secret of 4 Bungalows this one!

Good food but veryyyyyy pricey!

Food at Masala Mantar is quite good. A variety of decent veg and non veg dishes. Desert is nothing special. Had Matka Kulfi, and it was just average, nothing like the one we've had at Kailash Parbat. The service was fast. However, they were a lil too fast as they wanted you to leave as fast as possible. The bill gave me a shock. Prices are sky high, almost a highway robbery. A meal for 4 costed Rs 1600, with no drinks and only 3 vegetables.
On the whole, it is a good place to have a meal, but id suggest u go for the delivery service rather than eating in at the restaurant. I maintain that the prices were on the high side.

Decent Decor, Nice Service, Above Average Food

We went there for dinner at 8 pm..Restaurant is on 1st floor so you have to climb steps...Not accessible for people on wheelchairs....We were seated immediately and told about the "Buy one get one free drink special"till 9 pm...we had a large whiskey (Domestic) for Rs 176 (got two for that price) and then a small one (Rs 85, again got two for the price), with soda...there is a charge for bottled water...Special of the day was "Fresh Baby Surmai Tandoori fish" for Rs 400...For food they have a Tik-a-tak menu, which has about 6 choices on the Veg and Non Veg side each for approximately Rs 150 to Rs190 each......these come with your choice of Roomali Roti or 2 Buns, Salad (Large pieces of carrots, sliced mooli, sliced onions)...I thought the food was very spicy but was tasty...If it wasn't for the spiciness of the food I would have given it 5 stars...The server told us, that they can adjust spiciness level if you tell them while will remember that next time..My overall opinion...nice place, moderately priced food, good service...will definitely try again...

Good Food

Good food with great ambience....prices also not very high.
go for lunch on weekdays 20% discount!!

Everything is just perfect!!! Must Visit!!!

Hey fellow burrpers, tried out this place purely reading the reveiws, but it paid off !!!
I have been recently going to various places for dining , but this one was the best.
Firstly its the Ambience and the atmosphere that makes u feel good,Lovely dim lighting, nice punjabi dhaba style looks, very table has a Masala in it,Big screens to enjoy 20 20 matches, soft music....the first look was really satisfying!!
Then comes the service, its honest helpful and good.
Now the food.....
The menu (as its on this site ) is very diverse, good options both veg and non veg.the waiter recommemded Chatpata chicken kababs and believe me it as AMAZING!!! juicy, right amount of spice, and ofcourse as the name suggests chatpata.Pls try it!!!
i also had a chicken tandoori, it was a save bet and tasty too.
next came chicken tikka biryani. the quantity was enough for 3 ppl, as we were only 2,, it really became very heavy.
about the drinks , its 1 free on 1 till happy hours (thats till 9 pm). old monk 30 ml costs a modest 80 bucks (plus taxes) and u get 1 free on that.
In mocktails ,we tried KAla mantar. a kala khatta drink with aamchur and pudina,it was okay,as the ice melted it became more delicious!!
At the end the serve jaggery ,its cherry on the top
damage for 2 ppl with drinks was 852 (with taxes)
TRY it ppl, i an already planning another visit.!!!!

ps: i think its also important to tell u that even the washrooms are good!! very clean and all wooden, pls visit it also.... he he

Mantra to Perfect Dining!

Right from the word go this place sets you up for a perfect north indian dining experience. The decor and ambiance of the place does reflect the dhaba theme (much in conjuntion with the owners other venture - Urban Tadka) but doesnt overdo it and keeps a nice fancy feel to it. With perfectly set lighting and the music the seperate section for family tables are apt for a large dining group.
We were a group of 15 ppl set into a section and the food to follow was just perfect. While we ordered tons of food - this is what made the evening - Tandoori Aloo & Paneer Tikka as appetizers...While the latter was the softest paneer I have had in recent times...the Aloo with the chatnis was terrific...another unique appetizer was the masala special starter..
In the Main course..the paneer kadai was ok but the dum aloo was the best i have had...a must try...the dal makhnai and the tadka dal both were perfect..and as mentioned in the prior reviews...the quantiti for each veg is very the end we were served with compliemetary jalebis and labdi...abs. delightful! From the peach iced teas to the butter milk..all beverages were v good.
All in all, nothing to complain about this place...service could be a little slow but I guess thats totally acceptable while the overall ambiance is so damage for 15 ppl was a mere Rs 3500!..Thats as good a vfm as one can get...!

North Indian at its best

This place is best as far as its usp is considered i.e. FOOD.

Tables have glass top and beneath are few blocks displaying different spices, quite pleasing. and once you are finished with counting and identifying the spices, look up and observe the roof. yes sir, it has egg baskets used to cover the ceiling, and with bare bulbs hanging from that high roof, gives quite a mistique look.

They have cocktail of the day written on a slate with tiny bells attached and a waiter would display that by shaking it thereby catching your attraction. My experience is to order anything but the day's speciality. Other normal drinks are just fine. I like the glassware they use to serve the drinks, on top of that, a neem stick is given to serve as a stirrer, brilliant concept for a dhaba setup.

Food, though limited in choice is very appealing. is served in generous quantities thus be aware of not over ordering. if you happen to be a non vegetarian, do not miss its "sarson chicken", it sounds strange but is the yummiest chicken curry i have ever tasted. M not a hardcore non veg person thus dont usually have chicken in main couse, but in masala mantar, not ordering it is crime.

the only feeling you get after coming out of this place is that you are fully stuffed and you dont feel guilty of doing that crime. it feels so gooood.

if you happen to give your birthday party here, dont disclose it to the restaurant staff. when you cut the cake, the staff comes and sings the b'day song for you and one of them would be holding a slate with lots of tiny bells and b'dy wishes written on it and would start dancing frenetically, shaking his entire body and continuing for some 40-50 seconds. boy if its ur day, u feel embarassed but if it is of someone else's one njoys it a lot.

nice place to be with friends/family or just ur girl on a date

Beware of the quantity..yeh to too much ho gaya!!!

2 of my good friends and i decided to check this place out after one of them had been here some time back and had been singing laurels about the restaurant whenever we spoke of punjabi food.So it was 2nd October-The smoking ban had been enforced plus it was a dry day so no booze. So we make an entry into the place at 9.30-10pm.We enter the restaurant and i was amazed to see such a big place in terms of space.Seems like the owner had purchased/leased the entire floor of the building and so it was divided into 3 sections. We sat in the middle section.Since we were in no mood to have too many starters, My friend ordered a veg starter as he was observing navratri(So no Non Veg for him).It was called Tandoori Mushroom and we ordered Chicken Chettinad and a Mix Veg subzi cause we wanted to try how punjabi restaurants serve south indian subjiz plus the navratri season. Also we ordered garlic naan, onion kulcha and normal kulcha. So they got the starters first which was the best veg starter i had ever had and mind you that was when the service was quick cause you have like one waiter aligned to 1 or 2 tables which was good and plus no need to call them eveytime you need something.Coming back to the food, the mushrooms were well tandoored with capsicum, onion which added more flavour.

The main course took atleast 15-20 minutes which was irritating but we were okay with that cause we had masala papad for company. Finally the food arrives and i am in for a shocker. They had got the subzis in vessels which were bigger in size than what other restaurants serve in.We were 3 people and the food that came looked like it was meant for 4-5 people. But i must compliment them for the excellent quality and quantity. The chettinad was medium spicy and was good.I cant rate it much as i had tried it for the first time. The veg subzi was also good, though i dont prefer veg dishes in places where they serve non veg.The naan and the kulcha was nicely prepared(Very Soft and not too crispy) and so tasted even better with the subzis. However in the end it was too much for 3 of us.Dint order any desserts as we were full.

The bill came to about 650 bucks+taxes. My friend surprises us saying that he is paying the bill as its a surprise birthday treat.Actually his birthday was in september and he wasnt in mumbai to celebrate it.So it was like a double surprise

Overall a good place.Next time i am definitely trying some punjabi dishes for the main course.Cause its like "Punjab mein aake koi South Indian Khata hai kya??".Highly recommended for punjabi food lovers.

Surprised at their honesty

A lot has already been said about this place, and their food seems to have been consistently good since they've opened. While we are regular patrons of its group restaurant Urban Tadka, this is more spacious with less or no waiting compared to UT.

5 of us walked in for lunch today, and we were happy to see that their 40% off on weekday lunches - food only (MON-THU) held good today despite being a public holiday.

We ordered plenty of tandoori starters - aloo, mushroom, achari paneer which all came in promptly and they were seasoned just right - not OTT on oil or salt.
The main course took way too long to make an appearance - but it turned out good for us to take a small break after binging on the starters washed down by chhaas. After a long long wait the rajma, lahori aloo gobi and hara bhara kofta curry came in, but only with 2 of the 5 rotis ordered. On asking the waiter, he admitted that they were short on staff and the rest of the stuff would come in soon. I quite appreciate this 'no BSing' approach, instead of trying to run away and avoid the questioning looks of customers. Given that all the food was lip smacking we were more than willing to wait for the remaining stuff.

I'll highly recommend the butter garlic naan made from wheat flour along with the rajma rasseywala. There was no faulting any of the food ordered - actually much better than Urban Tadka which tends to go overboard with the salt many a time.

We decided to end the meal with a kheer, which again took too long to come in, so we asked for it to be cancelled. However a plate of rabdi-jalebi and kheer came in a bit after the bill, which the waiter declared to be on the house.

So a wonderful leisurely meal for 5 at 40% off came to 1300 with taxes and tip. I see some complaints about the service by the other reviewers, but honestly we were quite happy with it, especially their honesty which is a rare commodity nowadays.

Great Food

5minutes walking distance from my house this place has delicious food and great ambience. The best part is that they will make the stuff as the way you want. The service adds one more plus point to the place.
The home delivery service is also very good and they really provide you with your order 5min.before the promised time.
Had a great experience.

Food is Aces, Service Joker!

Masala Mantar is the cousin to Urban Tadka - promoted by the same people, and largely trying to fit in a bigger set of people and serve them good north indian food.

However, where it all goes wrong, is the Service. Eating out is a flash in the pan event, but it is an event, and much like the food, the service matters.

My first visit to the joint was the week it opened, and they did not have too many patrons and the place was real nice to us with a lot of attention given. However, I've seen it grow over the months and years and get Nasty!

The last time I got there, these dudes took the longest time however to serve me. This was 6-8 months ago. The food sucked, the order was mired with confusion, and they took 25 minutes to get me 1 rumali roti.

However, like the previous reviewers write, the food is mostly very good here! So hopefully, they can get their service right too again :)

Good Food. Bad Service

Awesome food. That is the only thing for which i will go back to this place.
Service though is not up to the mark.
It started when I called up the place to make a table booking. We (my frnds n me ) were going here on a saturday nite and hence i thought that a reservation is in order. The number that is listed goes to some other desk and hence i was given the right number for 'reservations'. On calling the reservations number I was informed that they dont do reservation on the phone (this is not just restricted to Sat/ Sun but is the case for all days). So I asked the guy that how come the previous guy did not tell me this. They did not bother to give an answer.
Well as fate had it we did land up at this place after we did our usual bowling nearby
Ambience is pretty decent. Also thankfully the AC was working properly. The place has a high ceiling from where lights are suspended and cooling up such a place is quite a task, especially these days with everyone going in economy mode for ACs.

Excellent food. The Panner and Aloo starter that we ordered was a bit spicy for some of us but none the less tasted good.
A bit on the expensive side. The Bar Menu Especially is not right. The price in that menu is something else and they charge you something else. I am not just referring to the Taxes the actual charges differ in the Bill. Thats something you need to watch out for.

Would I go again? Most definately.

If you are craving a food orgasm, this is the place to start a relationship with. The food is great and they will make it just the way you want it. Unlike other restaurants where it seems like leaving out cheese or oil or salt is as difficult as reaching nirvana, this place is happy to make your life easy and give you what pleases you. Call in advance so you don't have to wait long for your orgasm. On the other hand, I’m told if you wait it can be better!

Ordered In

Have yet to visit the place, but ordered in a couple of weeks back. The butter chicken, aloo masala were great with very little oil as instructed. And the roti's just right.

Wonder what awaits us on our visit there.

Wow Food n ambience

Best Indian food that I have been to in a long time....entering the restaurant n u feel u r in a diff world! d buzz, the interiors, the food is toooo good! Service is warm and just the right suggestions given by the staff!

Most of the similar places have more variety of non-veg food but they are equally good number of dishes for us vegetarian ppl....veg biryani is good but dal makhani is not to be missed!

Definately a place to re-visit and if you still haven't been there, u r definately missing something!`

Hmm, so so...comparatively

Its so so, as compared to its own chain restaurant Urban Tudka.

- Try Lemon chicken

Super Nice Place

This place is becoming our regular adda to visit every Sunday.. they have great paneer starters.. achari paneer is too cool and they have some masala mantar special paneer starter which is very good too (I may be wrong with the exact name here). Everything is just too good. And yea, dont miss those gulab jamun in the end.. just way too good.

Delicious Punjabi Food

Everything you get at Masala Mantar taste awesome.!!!! Masala Mantar has great variety of punjabi food specially veg.!!!! I have no words to explain about the food!!!! and quality!!!! of this place. There Dal Tadka is really awesome.!!!!

Masala Mantar

As you take the stairs to the restaurant you notice happy pictures of people with vegetables, shot by ace photographer Jagdish Mali, lining the wall.
The restaurant itself is quite spacious and very interestingly done up. Bare bubs suspended on wires from the ceiling light up the place, the interiors of which are done up to appear like a cross-between an old ‘kothi’ of Punjab and a Dhaba. The white, brick-coated-with-choona walls, covered with still more pictures by Mali, give the restaurant a spacious feel.
Simple wooden tables are well spaced out, giving each table the required amount of privacy from the ones surrounding it.
Do note the cashier-corner, which consists of two little desks, the kinds a ‘munshi’ in the movies of the old days had.

Well-informed, cheerful and courteous staff who were unobtrusive otherwise but promptly at you table the moment you required them.
I have no idea if this is the norm, but on the day we were there, the staff had the day’s specials and special offers written on brightly colored paper squares, pinned on their all-black uniforms. Pretty innovative!

Since none, out of the 4, of us were particularly hungry, we ordered an odd assortment of dishes;
Chicken Shorba: yum and seasoned just right enough to border on fiery.
Gilafi Chicken Seekh: a colorful chicken and vegetables seekh kebab, which was okaish.
Roasted Kaali Miri Kebab: as the name very obviously suggests, tandoori chicken pieces flavored with crushed black peeper, which was exemplary.
Murgh Mirch; a rather unusual tasting tomato based gravy that had the tang and aftertaste of green chillies, with chicken.
Naan, Garlic Butter Naan and Tandoori Roti: all three of which were soft on the inside and crisply roasted outside, just perfect!
Phirni for dessert: awesome creamy and well made.
Apart from these, 2 Masala Papads and 1 Fresh-lime soda was ordered too.

The bill was Rs 895 for the above, inclusive of taxes.

I would like to specially mention that all the food that we ordered has almost no visible extra oil which is otherwise so typical of Mughlai dishes. The food also arrived promptly and the serving sizes were very generous.

Good, atypical Punjabi fare

The best part about Masala Mantar are their off-beat vegetarian dishes - they have a Tandoori Shrikhand (BBQed Sweet Potato), Tandoori Brocolli, Bhein Curry (Lotus Roots), Peta Curry (Pumpkin Mash w/Paneer) amongst others. They seemed to have a very likable non-vegetarian menu as well, but we were with a largely vegetarian audience, so stayed away from that.

All in all, the food was good. We ordered the Pahadi Subzi (you're typical cream based mixed vegetables dish); bhein curry (delicious); palak paneer (good, not oily at all) and daal makhani (excellent).

Very heavy meal, but it wasn't too heavy on the wallet. One more thing - the Kutchi Beer (or masala chaas) was good too - not as good as I've had at Urban Tadka, but I did have two glasses.

This still falls around third or fourth in my preference for Punjabi fare in the suburbs (Firangi Dhaba, Urban Tadka, Mista Paaji's and then Masala Mantar).

Good Stuff

sunday night we attended a birthday party here..

so we went to Masala Mantar exactly opp. Mhada Lane, 4 Bungalows, Mumbai.
