Best at Low prices

Hotel New Sardar is famous in Lalbaug and Chinchpokli area. They have now started self-service which looks odd but you'll forget this all after eating its breakfast. Talking about lunch, it's affordable to almost every person as prices of the thali are average in price. Taste of food is just awesome. A perfect meal.

VFM and vintage

Landmark for the area for many years, this eatery has been serving delicious fares all along. It was sad to hear that they are cutting costs and not able to retain staff during a recent visit. So, looking at the sad state of affair had to opt for takeaway than actual eat in.

We asked for two types of Grilled Sandwiches, Butter Masala Dosa and their famed Missal Pav. Their sandwiches are creatively named and so correctly. Not two have been alike as noticed earlier and happy to inform that they’ve maintained that standard. In our case both grilled sandwiches were made to near perfection; ingredients were not similar but were mixed well. One such hearty sandwich can be converted into a light meal for sure.

Talking about Masala Dosa, it was hit-and-miss in places. Overall okay to eat if served right from the griddle.

Coming to their famed missal pav; one word sums it up – Mind blowing. Their special home-made masala makes it flavourful but not too overpowering. You can taste all the ingredients and still it tastes yummy as a whole. And yes, since eating here for decades; I’m happy to note that they’ve pretty much kept their quality intact.

VFM food in such recessionary time is hard to find. Hope they tied over their troubled waters sooner and continue to feed us for years to come.

Awesome Food..

If you have been to Lalbagh Cha Raja, the famous and reigning deity of Mumbai, then it is very easy to locate this restaurant. From the place where you enter the Ganpati pandal, keep walking towards CST, at the corner on the next junction is New Sardar.

This restaurant has an old-world charm to it. High ceiling, an Irani restaurant type appearance [was it an Irani Joint before, I don’t know], hand painted boards with some important information on them, sun-mica laminated tables and bench seats.

The menu card here is very expansive but for the convenience of the customers, they have highlighted their specialties in RED letters; I liked the idea. But the problem starts here, the items are so many that it gets difficult to make a choice especially after you sample the first of your order.

The Misal here is amazing, among one of the Best in Mumbai. Apart from the regular Maharashtrian fare of Kothimbir Wadi, Misal, Alu Wadi, they have another unique dish from the Marathi house hold, the Wangi Bhaji [Bhaji / Pakoda made from Brijnal / Aubergine].

Please try the Garlic Dosa; in variants of Sada /Cheese Sada / Masala / Cheese Masala]. It is amazing and I guess an innovation of this restaurant. The taste is perfect, enough to salivate your buds & not the very pungent odour of garlic.

The Sandwiches also are unique in taste and names as well. Minerva, Minerva Plus, Trupti, Francis, Delta Grilled, Yamini, Aplha etc are names of Sandwich offered here. Please try the Alpha Sandwich, you will love it.
Was this down with an Iced Tea.

I paid Rs.135 for Wangi Bhaji + Garlic Masala Dosa + Iced Tea; need I say it is value for money.

I plan to sample all the highlighted dishes in the next 3 months.

I was lucky to interact with a gentleman, Mr. Vivek Prabhu, a Chartered Accountant by education and also the owner of the restaurant. He is continuing the legacy, started by his grandfather in 1932, of good food at affordable price.

Wholesome, traditional & innovative

If there was ever a food that defines a people, Misal defines the working Man of Maharashtra. Found just about everywhere in the state an energy packed budget meal if there ever was one. Having eaten it from childhood to adulthood in just about every type of eatery in Mumbai, I am arguably a connoisseur of misal and I can honestly proclaim, you have not eaten Misal if you have not eaten Misal at New Sardar in Chinchpokli, Mumbai.

The only problem if any is the numerous tempting selections on the menu. From their signature Garlic Dosa and Oscar Sandwich to traditional dishes such as batsal and Vangyachi bhaji, all at a ridiculously cheap price, I have a hard time deciding & usually tend to over eat & stuff myself.

the best Maharshtrian food

Great Taste : Reasonable prices is the feature of New Sardar Hotel.
Missal , I would rate as the best in the town.I can say that because I am a die hard missal fan and have eaten missal at various places. Also the quantity is very good so the taste. Not just missal ,but batsal,Vangyachi [Brinjal] bhaji,Batata Wada is also great . The new addition [New sardar invention] Garlic Dosa is also very tasty and unique which you won't find at any other place so easily.
I have seen many people coming to this hotel for years to eat this special food.
The range of dishes is also unending with some new unique additions like Minerva and Trupti sandwitch also tastes different and have sardar touch.
I f you like maharshtrian food....you must come to New sardar ,I am sure you will come again and again.

BURRRRRP!

Burrrrrp!

Think about ‘New Sardar’, Kalachowkie, and one starts salivating! There is nowhere in this city where one can get anything like the choice of ‘mooh me paani’ misals, corn and cheese grilled alfa plus, batsal (meal in itself), garlic cheese dosa (ooh!), sania ('indian' cousin to 'english' alfa), etc.....etc, and at prices which are a steal! The iced tea is a 'must drink' here.

Vivek Prabhu, the 'Sardar of Kalachowkie', CA by qualification, but hotelier by heritage, is a foodie himself; a dreamer and a creator of exotic but simple innovations which he prices such that after hogging and burrrping, ones doesn’t find a hole cut into ones pocket! Vivek who has a great sense of humour, excells in pr, and can be seen sitting and chatting with his customers, explaining the fine points of his innovative creations. No wonder most customers one sees at the restaurant are regulars. By the way, the boss also eats here.

Although located at the heart of the ‘mill area’ of mumbai, the place has a great ambience, is spotless clean, and one is free to inspect the kitchen. One will notice that sardar clientele covers a spectrum from mill workers to bright young white collar exec's who are all there to enjoy the 'sardar' experience! Nothing to beat this place....try it out yourself! Parking space in plenty in the gully adjacent to the restaurant.

Keep it going, Vivek!

Abolute VFM

For a hotel that's been started in 1932, the place is absolutely neat and clean and very well maintained. It situated at the corner junction of two streets and can be mistaken for one of the old Irani joints. But make no mistake, the food's vegetarian and absolutely value for money.
After reading the earlier misal review on burrp, decided to try it out. Absolutely great tasting misals. Very well made.
Make it a point to meet the wonderful owner of the place, Vivek Prabhu. A third generation restauranteur, very well qualified (he's a Chartered Accountant) and very passionate about the food he serves. If you happen to be at the restaurant between 9.30 a.m. to 6.00p.m. you're sure to meet him.
On his recommendation, I tried out the iced tea and the Alpha Plus sandwich. The sandwich is an absolute melt-in-the-mouth dish served with mayo and ketchup. The iced tea is another speciality, not at all sweet like the packaged ones available. It's very refreshing, made fresh and is also available as a take-away in disposable glasses.
Also ordered the Garlic Cheese Masala Dosa. An absolutely unbelievable dish. This is the only restaurant to serve a Garlic Dosa in Mumbai. The taste is unbelievable and the garlic does not leave an aftertase in the mouth. A great recipe that Vivek's come up with.
Very Very value for money, when you take into account that the bill for 2 misals, 2 cups of iced tea, 1alpha plus sandwich and 1 garlic cheese masala dosa came up to Rs.172.00
Don't be put off by the name or the location. Wonderful food. Great Value. And an owner who's passionate about what he makes. One of the best combinations possible.

MUMBAI'S BEST MISAL

This place has won the award for best misal. The contest was held by Mumbai Times( a Times of India publication). Their misals are not watery and have a unique gravy like consitency. They have 3 types of misals 1) Original which is being sold from 1932, 2) Batasl ( a batata wada based misal ) and 3 ) Mysore Misal where in the farsan is of the spicy type.
This restaurant has invented the Garlic Dosa and till date is the only place in the world where this dish is available. A fact to be mentioned is that Garlci Dosas should be relished and not eaten . The flavour and taste lingers in the mouth long after the dosa has been eaten.
