Whats not: Bruschettas , Banana Caramel Milkshake.

This place is good to go on Sundays when everything else is Packed.
Also this place offers really good Breakfast too!

Atop a Happy Tree

I loved this place. Try the Mexican section. The sandwiches and the sauces will be a refreshing change. The ambience is quiet and relaxing. If you want to make this a better experience, I would suggest sharing their amazing chocolate desserts with good company.

gave it a star since there is nop option to NOT give a star. the place sounds so cool and quaint.

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH! The desserts all taste like cardboard and erasers.

go there only if you have to GO. convenient toilet off pedder road. but that too stinks.

Total Rubbish

This is probably the worst place you can eat at in SoBo.

The food is terrible, the staff rude and the place is total rubbish.

Go down to Breach Candy, you get cheaper food and no lip.

Horrible.

I would normally think twice before giving some place such a bad title....but UTBT as they call it deserve it.
I live across the road from them, I have been there a few times since they began. The food was good but the service was slow and wait was long. In the beginning I thought the slow service and long wait times would improve as they got used to running the place but when i went in last week I was surprised that not only has the service worsened but the food is bad too. We ordered bruchetta (which was very nice when they began) but this time the bread was actually raw and half baked. We had to send it back. Next to us another table was yelling at the waiter for another botched-up dish which too they sent back. We did not dare to order more.

The waiters are ignorant in what they serve, rude and have an apathetic attitude. They couldn't care less if people from 2 tables just vacated the place in anger and disgust.

Extremely low light in the outside seating is very gloomy. So dark are some of the tables that you cant even see what's on one's plate without cocking ones eyes.

Very surprising that a place goes down to worse from the time it started instead of improving. They could have done very well for themselves if the owners cared. There is nothing here which is good that you can say. I 'd give it a quarter star if the system would allow. Sad.

Quaint European Style Cafe...

The stone wall makes you feel as if you've transported to a road side European cafe rather than in Mumbai. This place is frequented by all couples, families, groups of girls from the nearby Sophia college.

Food: The menu had many interesting options. We ordered the UTBT special garlic bread, pasta in penne and mezze platter. The garlic bread and mezze platter were ok. The pasta was decent. They had some interesting drink options and we tried the watermelon with mint (good) and watermelon with strawberry (could barely taste the berry). Ordered molten crust dessert. It was good but there were some hard bits that spoilt it. Overall food was average.

Service: Agreed the staff is a bit slow and not really aware of what's on the menu but we had no problems as such. In fact our food came super fast. Except for the dessert given that they just had to heat it but well overall ok not bad.

Damages: Not too expensive. We spent about Rs 800 for 3 for for 1 starter, 2 drinks, 2 mains and a dessert.

While the foods average its very laid back and a great place to go chill.

Right Place , Pedder Road

Careless attitude of Staff. Whenever you will go to the Right Place you will find huge crowd, it?? It's a place where you get pizza, sandwiches and ice creams, though its food is good but the attitude of the staff is worse. They feel that they are the only in town offering good sandwiches in south Mumbai. The way they talk with the customers is something you do not expect when you go with your family and friends for outing. I personally feel if they continue this attitude soon the customers will look for options even though they might have god food at less price.

Bad Service.. couldn't care less staff!!

Monday night 10.45pm & after a long day of work the idea of sinking my teeth into some good food at UTBT kept me going (I had heard a lot about it but never had a chance to try.. and now i never will)
there were barely 4 tables occupied.. the steward (was he?) was quick enough to take the order. Mushroom Pate sizzler & chips n dips & some coolers till we waited for the pate.. (since d sizzler takes about 25-30 mins).
The dips were purely ok.. the salsa dip could have tasted better with smaller pieces of tomato..
11.30pm with only 2 tables occupied..the other occupants had just walked in couple of minutes back ... I was hungry to the core till I got the whiff of the pate & heard the sweet sound of the sizzle..ready to dig in.. my steward deftly carried the pate to the new occupants.. Hello didn't we order first!!
There was pandemonium & then every employee went into hiding...we had to literally pull them out, unapologetic & couldn't care less, ready with a bill rather than an alternative.. when we demanded to speak to the manager for an explanation.. the manager offered to serve us the sizzler in the next 5 mins ... so why wasn't that done earlier on instead of making us wait for 45 mins!!
.. it would have saved us time and I would have been writing a review on their food on burrp rather than their crammy service!!

I wouldn't have given them any star.. but burrp insists on atleast one!

Good food. Ok service.

UTBT was a chance option on Sunday evening. I think we were early so got a table right away. but by 9 we saw that the place was getting crowded.

The youngsters of the area a bit of nuisance around this place, since it's a very popular teen hangout - they are smoking, laughing away and doing their car skids etc. Kind of disturbing a bit.

Ambiance is nice - but A/C tables are limited, so in humid weather outside seating could be an issue. But a few tall fans threw in appropriate breeze.

What we ate?
Jalapeno cheese fritters - yum. Should have.
humus with pita bread - not bad.

Mushroom Pate - yum. Should have. (pic uploaded)
Mushroom wrap (pic uploaded) - was very tasty but the wrap seems to have hardened after a few re-heats in the microwave, I think.
Italian Connection - dad says it was nice.
Pasta in pesto sauce - could have been a little better. very hard boiled, I thought.
Wild mushroom & thyme Risotto - was kind of sad, I thought. In crude terms - it needed some tadka. Was a bit boring, could have done with some spices etc.

Dessert offerings are limited - not much variety if u are not a chocolate person. The mousse and vodka cheesecake tasted very artificially sweetened. I am not sure if the others looked any better either.

So overall a decent food offering, but service lacks a bit - had to push the waiters around a bit and hey don't jadao too much english poor guys just about manage to understand the dish names - so avoid asking too many extra questions.

For the 5 of us we paid Rs.1200, which was not bad. Of course the servings are just about ok to fill individual stomachs so I don't expect sharing to be really workable.

Recommended for casual dining. Avoid large groups - could get a bit messy.

Laidback Cafe, Good Food

I went to 'Under The Banyan Tree' for snacks and some coffee in the evening. It is a small laid back coffee shop in Sophia College Lane, with a microscopic air-conditioned seating area, most of the tables are laid out in the open. On the whole I like the setting which is literally 'under the banyan tree'.

The first thing I noticed was the cafe does not serve regular water, bottled water has to be purchased. The laminated white menu cards were shockingly sticky. Ordered a 'Latte', nice and milky, but I would be happier if it had a more powerful Espresso shot, Cafe Coffee Day makes this coffee concoction really well. For food, firstly I had a 'Paneer Tikka Cheese Wrap', the wrap itself was tasty and baked really well, I found the filling a bit off the mark, less Paneer and more capsicum, scrumptious nonetheless. Secondly, had a portion of 'Oven Fries', relatively less sinful fries served with awesome mayonnaise, lightly spiced and perfectly seasoned with salt, were delicious

Service is a little slow but cordial on the whole. Moderate pricing of 'Under The Banyan Tree' is always a bonus. Preparations are pleasing to the palate as well. I would have given this place four stars, but sticky menus and no regular water, forces me to downgrade my rating to three stars.

A quiet place to hang out

I went here on a summer evening after the sunset considering the al fresco set-up. I liked the feel and atmosphere of this place. Thankfully they had placed fans and air coolers.
They have around 4-5 round tables which can comfortably seat 4 people (6 people can be crammed on this table) and a large table which seats around 10 people.
I ordered the much talked about Watermelon and Mint Cooler (Rs. 75). This drink is a must try. They use chopped mint leaves as the garnish rather than the mint essence. The panini sandwich (Rs. 75) was also ok and was served with potato chips on the side.
The pastas and risottos were quite reasonably priced. I will try them the next time. The service was good.
The prices are not very steep. A certain recommendation for a quiet evening with friends. I am certainly visiting this place again.

much needed cafe in sobo

tried this place a cpl of times found the quality of place fairly consistent..

had the pasta and pizza's (the top ups viz.,olives and sundried tomatoes a bit too salty).,otherwise the bake .,the crust and more importantly service was reasonably good.

the cafe is out of an old stationary shop which is small but the owner has done a good job by providing seating on the roadside giving a feel of cafes abroad or somewhat close to the feeling.

on the negative side the place is always filled with teen"s n can be noisy n smoky

all in all a good place-recommendable

al fresco dining Mumbai ishtyle

For several years, Ramnik's Grocery store was the only place where the girls from Sophia could hang out. It was also the only place where the other young people in the area could hang out with them.

It came as a bit of a surprise when the decidedly uncool baniya shop became a slic new eatery Under the Banyan Tree. Truly under the Banyan Tree, it is a tiny little place which just about has enough space for a table, four PYT and a pastry counter. Which is why most of the eating does happen under the banyan tree or al fresco dining.

Pure vegetarian with good Italian style food, the pizzas were particularly good. A tad over priced for the ambience which is pleasant enough in Winter but hot in Summer, I would not really recommend it for a good old fashioned family dinner. Not because the food is not good, but because the place is distinctly young - with the majority of its diners being collegians ( or at least those who look like collegians) you do begin to feel a bit out of place and truly aunty.

But if you don't feel like driving down to grab a bite, UTBT is just the place for a laid back dining experience with Good food ,no fuss and no frills.

Yummy Pastas, Great Location

We visited this place on the day of the 20/20 India-Australia match at Brabourne, which was lucky as the place was empty and we didn't have to wait to be seated.

All the food was good, and prices were quite reasonable too - the total bill for 8 people came to around Rs 1700 odd. We tried a couple of soups (Minestrone, Mushroom), the Caesar salad, Spiced Shoestring fries, Fries with cheese, around 6 different types of pasta, New
Potato and Cheddar Melt and brownie/chocolate shake for dessert. Of this, the cheesy chips, the New
Potato and Cheddar Melt and the pasta with Mamma Rossa sauce (imaginative combo of red and white sauce) were absolutely the yummiest!

Must also mention their lovely Watermelon & Mint cooler, which is very refreshing, especially on a warm day.

Desserts are okay, but I have yet to find one I really like!

They also serve sandwiches and pizzas by the slice, which is a good option for those on a budget and when everyone in a group wants to have a different pizza. Haven't tried this as yet, but will do so on my next visit.

A good joint for tasty and reasonable food at Pedder Road, definitely worth dropping by for lunch or dinner. It's also ideal for a quick snack or a quiet brunch with a good book.

Amazingly serene Sunday hangout

Now most of the people that trickle into this place during the weekday are most likely star crossed lover boys looking to steal a minute or two with the Sophia all-girl's college. This place resides literally next door to the girl's hostel, making it a popular spot for young guys. What's so special about this place is the serene atmosphere it offers on a calm, Sunday morning. Fresh espresso, lavash and hummus and maybe a watermelon-mint cooler over the course of a few hours with a book or a chess board - now that sounds enticing. The owner is very courteous and hospitable, the menu is inventive, and the food quality is outstanding.

Whether you go here for the eye candy or to attain nirvana under the twisted branches of two giant banyans, Under the Banyan Tree will get you there.

Under a really huge banyan tree

I didn't expect this place to be *actually* located under a banyan tree, but was pleasantly surprised to find out that it indeed was right underneath one big friggin banyan tree.

They run a cafe with a lot of open area which they've covered with an awning (this might be just during the monsoon season). It is located sufficiently away from the Peddar road, so as to escape the incessant honking of cars on the road. The place makes you feel right at home with it's lovely quiet surroundings.

We had a small get-together of a few burrpers here, this morning. The owner himself supervised the serving of the food and drinks. The service was very efficient. A couple of must try items are the Watermelon + Mint aerated drink and the hummus pita bread combo. The Hummus was just out of the world. Truly fantastic. The cappuccino we had later was okayish.

This is one of those places, that you'd love to go back to with a big fat book on a warm and lazy Sunday afternoon. The only other place that comes close is Prithvi Cafe.

Next time you are planning a get-together or a birthday party, this is the place to go to.
