Five Herb Lamb Chop Oct 31 - Nov 15

  • Master chef Xong Lee has flown down to Mainland China from Beijing with his special aromatic twist of the perfect lamb chop. The Chinese master chef's five herb lamb chop is a rare recipe of a perfectly done chop paired with aromatic sauce made from five different Chinese herbs and choice spices. The succulence, flavour and tender meat is achieved by the chef's vast experience of hand tending the grill. A special marinade made from Chinese herbs leaves makes the meat tender and aromatic. The lamb chop is slowly roasted on gentle heat and then seared over high flame. This lets the meat cook perfectly to medium rare. This fine art of searing locks in the juices with a delightful crust results in an evenly done, full flavoured, aromatic and tender meat. Drizzled with the unique, herbed sauce, the succulent five herb bed sauce, the succulent five herb lamb chop is a favourite among food lovers.

Average food excellent service

For all the hype built around this being the 'best chinese ever' the place was a let down with respect to the food. I mean how can a place be out of its signature dishes by 2100 on a Saturday night. Unfortunately that happened with us and we were left dissapointed and wondering why they were out of crackling spinach on a Saturday night early into dinner service. Now coming to the food, the food was not bad but it wasnt something that was a stand out either. We had the veg dimsums, chilly corn starter, a stir fry mushrom starter, wok tossed haka noodles, the clay pot rice, a customized tofu dish off the menu and the darshan. Maybe this place is more non vegeterian friendly. I will have a go again to check whether it was an off day or the stuff that I has was 'indeed the best chinese' that they do dole out. The ambience was good and the service excellent and that has attributed me to give the place another go

Falling Standards

I am/was a die hard fan of Mainland China....and have visited it bunch of times...but something is really off about it these days. My last month visit has been really awful. The staff was highly distracted and uncoordinated they got the drinks along with the starters even though it was asked to get it with the main course. The Chilli Chicken was dead cold and after pointing that out they did get another plate of chilli chicken which was hell hot (Maybe thats wat they understood when we said it should be hot!!!) had to wait for it to cool down before we could eat.
The worst of all was me and my mother's favorite dish Crab Meat Fried Rice.....its one of the most yumilicious dish of the restaurant and has a schezwan fried rice type redish color but we were served as bland ' white' crab fired rice lacking textures and its trademark spicy flavor. On asking our attendant he confidently shrugs our doubt off by saying its always been white. Well we dint wanna push the matters any further for the night but i swear the many times i have eaten in Mainland China in Mumbai and Pune its always been Red Crab Meat Fried Rice. I was thoroughly dissapointed by the incident and so was my mother whom i had brought in for her favorite cuisine. Maybe it was not one of their best days or maybe their standards are falling. :(

Run of the mill Chinese food

Have been to Mainland China in the cities that they have a restaurant. However i found that the quality has been going downward as time goes on. Was disappointed with the food here. I will take MC off my dining list in future.

if its chinese it has to be mainland

the tag line in the commercials are true, time after time they delivered the same taste and quality to me. A good place to have a nice sumptuous chinese meal but can get crowded sometimes and noisy too.

Below expectations - Buffet

We are a foodie family. We went to MC last sunday (and the same evening to Nawab!). Our previous visit a couple of anniversaries ago had been a pleasant experience in terms of both service and food, and we much expected the same.
But I guess we just picked a wrong day - Sunday Lunch. A very busy time. Normally we'd try a la carte, but the kids were keen on the buffet. And for Rs 550+taxes we definitely expect a better experience.
The waiters served the starters just once and then did not reappear. It's quite embarrassing to sit with empty plates, craning your necks to catch the eye of someone so that your kids get that second helping of a starter they like. I assume it wouldn't be out of place to expect a courtesy of asking if the guests wanted a second round of starters.
Then the sauces and cutlery were not replenished until asked twice. Neither were the buffet stations kept replenished. The last thing you want is to scrape the bottom of the dishes. The crabs were good, but the rest just average. I love crabs, but they did not have any cutlery to eat it with - makes it a very messy affair.
The dessert table was a similar empty arena. Not that the choices were any great.
I guess if MC wants to maintain a Fine dining status it should do away with the buffet. Or get more staff as the lot that day was definitely stressed, just unable to keep up with the rush though valiantly trying.
My wife doesn't want to go there 'ever' again. I might be more tolerant. Will wait for a positive vibe before trying it again.

Got a call back from their Head Office - Guest Relations.
It is Good to see that they take the feedback seriously. I have been assured that my feedback will be acted upon. I might go back just to check if they have introduced the Crab crackers and picks! But have to convince the wife though!

Terrible Service

This is one of the better Chinese Restaurants in Town, but the service is really substandard for the price you pay.
Torn menus, chipped walls, filthy doors and washrooms. The management is just interested in making money.

Cockroaches!

My wife and I went to Mainland China for dinner on Tuesday, February 2nd. My inputs:

Positives:
1.) Great food
2.) Great service
3.) Wide variety on the menu
4.) Good drinks

Negatives:
1.) Too many tables make the place look crowded and when full make the place noisy. Not a place to take someone on a date which we realized later!
2.) Intensity of overhead lights is too much. Can make you sweat so remember to take a table where the lights are not exactly overhead. On ours, the lights were right over my head and caused a headache. No mechanism to dim the lights a bit.

SUPER NEGATIVE:
1.) My wife found a cockroach in her menu! YUCK! If one finds cockroaches in their menus, I shudder to think how hygienic are their kitchens! This is absolutely unacceptable! Even if the food is great, this makes you distrust the day to day management of the restaurant! More importantly, it makes you think twice about eating the food!

I would have given 4 stars otherwise but specifically for the SUPER NEGATIVE I will give it 2 stars!

Real Chinese

I visited Mainland China on my Birthday with my family. We started with Soups. I tried a soup called 3 Treasure soup (I don’t exactly remember if it was 3 or 5) It was a clear soup with fish, chicken and crab meat. I was simply great. The rest of the family tried with the normal sweet corn chicken soup but it was also great.

We the tried a dumpling and a chicken starter. Both were good. They also served Chinese tea which I would suggest you to stay away from. They also gave us chopsticks except me no one could use. When then tried a Hot Pot Curry with a chicken rice. The curry had the biggest prawns I ever saw in Pune. I rice was sufficient and then was tasty. We then tried Honey Noodles with ice cream for dessert. They also gave us a surprise cake as it was my birthday. The honey noodles were kurkurey and not noodles but it was tasty. The cake was equally good. I didn’t except to give them a cake. It was a great experience.

I have also seen people who think chicken crispy, chicken Manchurian, haka noodles and momos is what Chinese is but I would say that if you wouldn’t want to go further than that then I think Mainland China is not for you.

Ordinary food ... sky-high pricess... a let down !

We visited the Mainland China last Saturday. We were two with a kid.
The Sea festival was going on.

Half the restaurant was empty but still the captains were rude about sitting and insisted on sitting us on a table in front of bar. When we plainly refused, they shifted us.

Now the ambiance. Well, it is nothing great. Looks old and dated. In a great need of refurbishing. Chairs are wooden and look rickety.

The food now. We ordered a Eight treasure veg soup, Chilly garlic prawns, Drums of heaven and Pot rice.
All the items were DISAPPOINTING AND OF ORDINARY TASTE.
The prawns were neither spicy nor fresh or crispy. Damage was Rs 495/- plus taxes. The drums of heaven took the prize for being the worst preparation at the restaurant. Just ordinary item with so ordinary preparation and they charged Rs 340/- plus taxes for this pathetic dish. Any average Indian/Chinese restaurant would do a better job of it at half or even one-third price. SO much for the hype.
We lost interest in food after the two starters and decided to bring the sordid affair to a close. So we ordered the Pot Rice. This is supposed to be a wet, succulent preparation with lots of vegetables and some gravy. It can be eaten alone. But the famous Mainland served us a Pot rice that tasted like a ordinary fried rice with little or no vegetables and very dry.
That did it . We ordered the bill and left the pathetic place.
We visited a Just Baked joint on the same road.
My kid had a burger and we all had some bread and pastry.
Well that was a satisfying meal !!

We have promised never to step in the Mainland.
End of story.

Excellent Food - Exceptional Service

This place is a perennial favorite of ours and we log in at least 3 visits a month or so. The food quality, preparation is very consistent and the staff is very courteous and helpful in suggesting dishes for our guests based on their palate and preferences. While we've always called ahead and reserved a table to avoid excessive wait times, we are yet to encounter an unpleasant experience due to the excessive buffet crowds on weekends.

The reason for writing this review however is to bring to light the exceptional handling of an awkward incident during our recent visit over lunch. We had an American couple visiting us over the Diwali holidays and we decided to introduce them to Indo-Chinese fusion food at Mainland China. Halfway through our appetizers, our American guest noticed a crawling insect in her plate and she freaked out. The manager profusely apologized, promptly cleared all our dishes and tableware and ordered new dishes to be made in the kitchen. To reassure our American guests that the restaurant maintains the highest hygiene standards, he immediately took both of them (without our prompting or questioning) on an unplanned tour of the kitchen to highlight their kitchen cleanliness, food preparation and staff hygiene habits. In the end, he sent a complimentary dessert to make up for the incident as well.

We all left the place happy and thankful that the incident didn't snowball into something untoward, with us having to explain to them why Indians don't take hygiene and cleanliness so seriously when it comes to eating outside etc etc.

Two thumbs up to this professionally managed enterprise. Yes, I agree, their prices are high but you get what you pay for. Excellent food with exceptional service to boot.

Good but Hyped

I have been to Mainland China a few times. Both the SB Road as well as the DP Road branch. It has been À la carte most of the times and buffet just once. Now first, let me give you the details regardless of Buffet or À la carte.

Both the Restaurants have a beautiful Decor. Real fine dining stuff. Staff are courteous, dressed in a decent attire. The lighting, the ambiance, just about perfect for what you would want from a fine dining experience.
Now, during buffet, the place gets cramped up a bit and honestly speaking it becomes a bustling little place, almost like a fish market. Could be because of the rush. It is very difficult to get the attention of the stewards who are serving you during the buffet. After trying a number of times could we get the attention of one and get him to serve us what we wanted.
The Quality of food wasn't really what was expected from Mainland in the buffet. It was just about average. Also bad choice of starters. You really don't expect to go to a place like this and wanna eat chicken starters with bones in them.
After a long time did we manage to get them to start serving the starters. Vanilla ice cream got over in the desserts and they couldn't refill it. Overall, for the buffet, all of us were highly dissapointed as we had gone there expecting a lot. And more so as it was my and a couple of other friend's birthday treat and our guests did not end up liking the buffet.

Now the Good part. The number of times I have been there for A la carte, I have been highly satisfied. The quality of food has been exceptional. The service and behavior has been good and professional. Once it was a birthday of a friend and they had offered to give us a cake baked there for free. Also, when we did the cake cutting the stewards got together with a guitar and started singing Happy Birthday ! So, all these value adds are really good at Mainland China when it comes to Ala carte. Plus the quality is maintained. Try the Bhetki preparation in starters. It is awesome. Though I would like to add the food there is quite costly. A meal for two non-veg without drinks would easily come to Rs 1000.

The buffet is available only on Sat and Sun for Lunch and is reasonably priced.
To sum it all up, the food is quite good here, but there are one or two more places in Pune, where you will get equally good food for lesser money. But yes I can vouch for the hospitality. Its pretty good here !

So now that you have the picture, take your pick and set off for Mainland China.

If it's Chinese, then its Mainland China

Ever heard of excellent service, with great food and lovely ambience? Well Mainland China provides all of them under one roof and it's one place, no matter in which ever city you are, the quality and the service is the same...

lovely place to go for a family outing as well as a get together with friends anytime!!!

Ok....

This place is OK. Pls dont exagerate, when u say the ambience is Great.

You find most of the people here having Beer or other Alcohol (including those coming for Business lunches).

The choice of sauces is good. There is some kimchi, too. Moderately good food. But nothing like the sort u get at places like Ling's Pavilion (which is authentic chinese food).

Brilliant every time!

I must admit - this place has been excellent every time I've been to it. I've been to the Dhole Patil road branch about 3 times and have never been to the other one (which I think is in Aundh) - so this review is about the DP Road one only.

Also, please note that I have never been here for dinner - only lunches.

The ambience of Mainland China is what hits you when you first enter the doors of this fine restaurant. It is very chinese - with the decor, the music and the waiters dressed up in black.

All the times I have been here, it was noisy - with most of the people having business lunches - but at the same time, not so noisy that you cannot have a decent conversation without yelling.

They have a fabulous fixed lunch for about 300 bucks inclusive of taxes which I've had once - and the other two times, we've gone a la carte'. (we missed the fixed lunch because they serve it only till 2 pm I think)

The food is exceptional and made with such finesse that you wonder what food you have been having all this while in the name of chinese food.

You can taste the delicate aroma and the spices in the food - but it has been done so subtly - that it brings a whole new meaning to it.

The service is pretty good too - and the waiters were polite and pleasant all the times we've been there.

Ask for the green tea when you go there - it is extremely soothing.

As for the food, you can close your eyes and pick out anything on the menu - and I guarantee it will taste good. Unlike some people who mention that this is "authentic" Chinese food - it is not. The taste is very much Indian Chinese and something which you'd probably be used to all these years when you've been having Chinese food.

However, it is the finesse and the quality of the food for which you should go here. Truly remarkable.
