Best South Indian Food
Once you are done with your waiting and fighting for the seat, sit down, relax and treat your taste buds with one of THE tastiest food.
1. Idli-wada dip
2. Mysore masala Dosa
3. Paper Masala Dosa
5. Madras Filter Coffee
-- with extra green chutney.
Once you are done, go for Mango Lassi!
Best South Indian
Vaishali is the heart of Pune, and will always be. jostling with activity and hungry clientele all through the day. I love their upma for breakfast , the Mysore masala cheese dosa, and the spdp in the evening are must haves. Though everything else , like cheese onion utappa with a dollop of butter is equally amazing . You will never be disappointed. I have been frequenting this joint since I was a kid and will keep coming back always ..
I will never recommend this place for south Indian food. This place is just over hyped... The sambar is not that great and other things as well... People highly recommend this place for south Indian food so I went with a lot of expectations but was really disappointed... Not that great.
A Place With Positivity
It was a regular place on my visiting list when I was a student in Pune. Now after years, when I shifted back again to this city, I wanted to go to this place like anything. As I reached, a huge waiting crowd welcomed me(it's like a trademark for this place). We finally got to sit after 20 minutes and ordered the regular south Indian stuff with some fresh fruit shakes. The order was served without any mistake, in minutes. The food was awesome as it used to be, it made me go back to my college days!! The crowd you greet here is a mix of all the tradition and classes. There are old couples, foreigners, youngsters from college, married women groups for their lunch outings, small- big families, techy people with their lappies. Almost all kind. The place is so lively that it leaves you with a lot of positivity other than the tasty tongue.
Vaishali is my family's absolute favourite eating joint in Pune. My Dad used to go there during his college days too and he says its just as awesome as ever! We frequent it so often, the staff recognizes us, they know what we'll order. So the place feels like home! And where do I even start about the food. Upama with coffee is what I usually have. Its out of the world. Mysore Masala Dosa is another favourite. Even their Chaat is superb!! I have never disliked anything at Vaishali!
Very consistent with food quality as well as service. :)
The first big place for me in pune was Vaishali on FC. The first big restaurant I ever visited...The place is very famous amongst the local crowd and is almost crowded at all the times. The ambiance is the usual restaurant type arrangement. You can choose to sit inside or outside under the tree or you may go upstairs and enjoy some peace there.
The food is very reasonably priced and that's the reason its very famous amongst the crowd of Pune. The service is average...not friendly but not bad either...They have a small washroom, which is not so clean, but okay in cases of emergency. The food is good, the chaats and south Indian food of this place is very famous. You'll always find this place in your budget.
Does this place need a review?
I'm at a loss of words when it comes to writing for this place. Yes, you can complain that it is forever crowded, you never can have a quiet meal for you are forced to order and run given that there are hordes of people awaiting their turn to sit on a table, and the way they look only makes it worse. But talking about the food, their sambar is something that one relishes, the idli wada, dosa (of all types), upma, sandwiches, uttappa and oh yes, the best of it all, SPDP wins you over each time. The foodie in me is awakened each time I visit this place, and the table full of lovely dishes annoy the onlookers (waiting for their spot) like anything. If you're new to Pune or haven't been to this place, I suggest you cancel any plans and just GO and try this place out.
Forever crowded but great food
Over the years, I have noticed that the quality of food in this restaurant remains steady. I studied in Pune and that was nearly 6 years back and till date, whenever I go to this restaurant when I am in Pune, I haven't been disappointed. Their south-indian menu is the best in the city and the perpetual crowds here are a testimony to that. Although a little on the expensive side, especially for the student lot, everyone likes it. Their service is super quick - one thing I am not very fond of is that someone keeps sweeping or mopping the floor while you eat - I know that's required but it's still a bit of a put off. My favourite here is the simple masala dosa and I love their pineapple shake!
Excellent - every time!! :-)
This is a very comforting place - you know what you want and you know you can get it exactly like the last time.
Idli, Medu wada, Dosa, Utappam are always, always good. The only problem with the upama is that it is not available any time other than early in the morning.
And of course SPDP!! They make everything fresh - including the sev they use for the SPDP. Again the only problem with SPDP is that its only available after 5 PM.
Apart from the food itself, there is a lot going for this place - it is very clean, even with the kind of crowds they handle. The service is excellent and the ambiance is amazing!!
A little too greasy!
This is by far one of my favorite places in Pune. Unfortunately off late, I find the food a little too oily than its supposed to be. I've been visiting this place for years now so the change is quite evident. Adding to that the prices are rising, that OK till the quality is maintained but it starts pinching when the quality drops a little and the prices go up.
Overall this place has pretty much maintained its charm, the fact that its crowded anytime you go there irrespective of the time or day.
Still going strong!
If you make a list of the top 10 ten places to eat at in Pune, then Vaishali has to feature in it. Though it is becoming more expensive by the day, it has still maintained the quality of it's USP - the south Indian food. Though extremely crowded 24X7, this place is very well managed and provides prompt service.
Cut to Flashback
Well if its eating out with all age groups or just take a break from the routine continental cuisine, Vaishali comes to the rescue.
Located on the buzzing FC Road, which has the maximum footfall of the College & Office crowd during the day time and the families & young couple during the evening time. Vaishali caters them all with their authentic South Indian Cuisine strictly restricting it to the Dosa's, Idli/Vada & Uttappams. well they do have the quick bites like Sandwiches, Pizza, Chaats.
The moment you enter the place it locks you with the sambar smell spread across the interiors, any point of given time you wont find a table empty. Done with a trendy yet sober interior the place offers indoor dinning as well as garden (covered) and roof top dining.
As the menu is not wide spread and caters the Classic like Sada Dosa, Masala Dosa, Mysore Sada or Masala dosa. One has limited options to choose from however the preperation and the flavour being authentic one can try the same stuff over and over again.
All my visits i have been ordering Butter Masala Dosa which comes with a scoop full of White butter (They restrict themselves from using the salted butter). The Sambar is the usual prepared at home with all the veggies. White Coconut Chutney as the hint of peanuts still it tastes good.
Vaishali is a legacy which is continued by todays Generation. For some its authentic South Indiean with a puneri twist, so for some its a place that gives the nostalgic feeling, in all a place which would be loved and frequented by puneris over the years.
one of the best south indian snacks
Vaishali has been my favourite hangout on FC road since my college days for its tomato onion uttappas, dahi wadas and tea. The only drawback of eating out there is the long waiting list whenever you go but its still worth waiting rather than eating out nearby.
Ok food not bad
Vaishali is on of the more well known restaurants in Pune, and is assoted with the PuneKar, It is good place to have tea and coffee, and south Indian snacks like wadda sambar, onion uttapa and butter masala dosa is really grate
but there is room for improvement as it is not as good as it was before
best south indian food joint in pune
Vaishali is one of the oldest and the best South Indian food joint in pune. The onion uttapa and butter masala dosa is highly recommended.I had been there with my sis who stays karnataka and she loved the food. You will have to wait for a table ..........long wait but its worth it:)............meal for two would cost 400 rupees
Visited VAISHALI in my first year of college........ a thing thats must when you land in Pune just like you have to visit Dagdusheth Ganeshji when in Pune!! Cool place with tasty food. SPDP is amazing!!! Have celebrated a number of functions right from birthdays to Result Celebrations, to engagements & consoling friends on break ups as well here @ Vaishali. A place that makes you feel fresh releiving of all tensions with young faces around!!! Vaishali rocks :)
Good Food,.... but way too overcrowded
you have a look at this one any time in the day, and it would be almost ALWAYS with a waiting queue. Be it for breakfast at 11 in the morning or late night around 10. And you wonder why. The place strictly serves south indian food and some juices/shakes.
we were a huge group of 7-8 visiting the place post a 6-9 movie, after waiting for a good 20-25 mins, got the seats at the terrace deck. one of the unanimous choices was mysore cheese masala dosa (which was yummy) and some sev puri to go with it (which was OK). some also ordered some litchie shakes which were not bad and worth a try. All in all. Good option for a light snack if not for the wait.
Heard so much about the place. Went there yesterday. When you go out for food you look for that experience. Firstly it was over crowded but I can discount that because it was weekend. But management of people waiting is poor. I saw people coming after us and yet got the table before us...I was pissed off. Thats what you don't expect when you go to a restaurant. Finally after several reminders we got place. It was nice airy but was wondering if it rains, probably we have to run for some proper shade. They got good place at FC road the backyard place can be made proper to have good ambiance. The front part of restaurant has poor ventilation arrangement.
The menu card looked jumbled with low focus on what they want to serve. The food was honestly just okey. I had better dosa and sambar wada at lot lesser price. I think the real taste of South Indian food lies in Sambar and chutney... Chutney was good. Sambar was pathetic and we managed without it.
All in all poorly managed. Probably it is famous because lot of college students throng there...it has potential to become a lot better place to serve better quality food. (I am forced to write such a negative review but the above was my experience.)
Nice Food but Very Crowded !
Certainly one of the best South Indian Restaurant in the city..
Famous for its Sambar, Dosas, Tea and Chat, its a very good restaurant..
BUT it is over crowded at times, one can have to wait for 30-35 minutes on weekend to get a place for a group of 6-8..
still remains the best hangout place on FC road..
After reading all the raving reviews of Vaishali I decided to give it a try. We ordered a bhel, a medu vada and ghee dosa and with each item that we ate, we were more and more surprised about what exactly were people going gaga about. Agree that street bhels are better but what about the standard udipi medu vada and dosa? I would rate it as below average. And seeing the throng of people waiting we were wondering if we should have given up our tables and had a better meal elsewhere. I'm from Viman nagar and our local Shree Krishna Veg Court surely serves better food.
Great food, but the waiting is long!
Love the Sabudana wada here. Went regularly during 2 years I stayed in Pune. Recently visited last week and refreshed my memory. Food still tastes great. But the waiting has just increased a lot! Wish management could add more seats or ask some of the students who are sitting around to vacate faster. But great place overall!
One fan added to your list
just interesting food! These were just a few of the delights listed on their menu. Dining at Vaishali is a one of a kind experience. There's everything for everyone - for those who love to experiment with their food & for those who want to just stick to the usual dal roti chawal. Right from the simple iced-tea to their extensive main course, each item is just what one can call PERFECT!!
Last night was my first visit here & I must say I was simply blown down with the food and service given to us. They have so much to offer that its just impossible to cover in, maybe, even 5-6 visits. Very very impressed! Way to go, You made a new fan last night!
years and years this place Rocks
Yummy Food Fantastic Service, i wont mind saying that your life is incomplete without a visit to thisrestaurant, No words can express our joy after we finished our grub. will Definitely visit again ... when ever we are on that side of town. The Management ensures that you go with Smile on your face come what may.
Mouth watering recepies
This is my favourite hangout.
Authentic food with good taste. Whatever on the menu you taste, you get the mouth watering taste. even though you need to wait, it is worth the wait.
My favorite food is dosa with chutney and medu wada with sambar.
Morning recepies vary with day reciepes.
My favourite food for the mornings are upma with a cup of coffee. Really yummy and delicious.
Try it and you will never forget the taste.
service maintained years together
i had gone recently here experienced the same gud service and food...... from years togehter this place has been maintaining their services and consistent taste of their south indian food...this time also tried the chocolate shake which is also very good....thumbs up to you VAISHALI !!!!!!!
Vaishali you rock!
I am a regular visitor of this place since 11 years now. Yes, sometimes, we had to wait, sometimes, got irritated because of the crowd and the feeling that someone is waiting for us to get up from the table and attack. But still, I say Vaishali rocks because I haven't found any difference in the taste in these 11 years. Same taste, same service !
The Sambar out here has a unique taste and you wont find it anywhere else. The Cheese Mysore Masala dosa should really be the signature dish of this place. Not to forget the SPDP, Idli, Vada, Filter coffee and Cold coffee. In fact, you order anything and you will be happily surprised. But yes, go for just eating. This place is not for chit-chatting, discussions. It's meant only for sit-eat-get out! :)
Vaishali's food tasted delicious, it tastes delicious and it will !
Awesome for South Indian food, but...
Awesome place for South Indian cuisine. They also serve a variety of other dishes including sandwiches, chaat and snacks. They have an assorted menu as well, leaving one to choose between an original south indian dosa and a cheesy glorified version as well. Both taste awesome. I usually end up ordering the idli vada doused in Sambaar, which is perfect to start with and then I end up trying something new almost everytime.
The only grouse with this place is that the meal is always rushed and there is usually someone waiting at ur table by the time u decide to finish your food. This can't be helped since this place is pretty popular with puneites and they form a day long beeline no matter what the time is.
Sometimes though the sambaar is pretty watery and can use some good ingredients. Might seem as a surprise for many who though that this was the holy grail of south Indian food in Pune, but then, this is the truth.
All in all a good place to enjoy a quick (if u land a table soon enough only) South Indian meal. Kannada speaking people might have some benefits in terms of getting a table sooner than the screaming, bawling public.
There are two options to sit, one dark stuffy indoor and the second is a garden sit out amongst potted plants and trees which is much better and the more sort after place to sit. The garden area also has these water mist spraying fans which cool the place down in summers making the conditions ambient enough to enjoy food. The area is covered and thus there is no chance of rain spoiling your meal.
I have been going to Vaishali since I was a little kid and I think what I love the most about it is that it seems to have stood still in time. The interiors seem the same, many of the servers are the same and the food is always, always the same consistent quality.
What has changed are the prices (!) and the new sprinklers that they added for the summer.
To many people, Vaishali is a place filled with rude waiters who hand you the bill as soon as you say you have no more orders to place, a place that is over crowded, a place where it takes a minimum of 15 minutes to get a table on any day and a place that is over rated.
For me, Vaishali is a place that feels like home and which can never go wrong. I know I can meet up with old friends at Vaishali and they will all happily agree without any debate. I know if I reach Vaishali by 12:30 pm for a quick bite on weekdays, I can be out of there by 1:15 pm. And I know Vaishali is where they will have my favorite idlis (sambhar separate), Mysore sada dosa and SBDP (extra teekha)!
If you want to experience 'Puneri culture', I strongly recommend you grab a bite in Vaishali. Even if the restaurant is over hyped, it's the perfect place to understand Pune's culture.
Early mornings you will find a slightly older crowd enjoying the upma after a walk or after playing some sport. Don't be surprised if you hear them discussing about politics, art or theatre! In the afternoon, you will experience the younger generation - the college students, office goers and some ladies' kitty parties. I love the fact that people are discussing about where to get the cheapest bags on one table, people discussing India's industrial growth rate on another table and women swapping recipes to make 'Khaman Dhokla' on a table further away! The evening and night times, you will find families, grumbling about the wait to get a table or happily discussing their day together!
For me, going to Vaishali is a trip down memory lane. . . A place where me and my friends reminiscence about our school and college days!
I highly recommend this place!
Best place for South Indian Food in Pune
Visited this place with my wifey today after almost 4 Years & food was right on top with its taste. Being Tuesday noon we expected to be a quick luncheon. To our surprise, we had to wait for 20 minutes before we can get a table. But the wait was worth, considering the nice ambiance they made outside in the garden, natural cool water spray around to kill the summer heat (though I'm not sure how hygienic it is being a water spray, which ends up a bit on your food).
Little slow on service if you order anything unusual, but loved the Mysore Masala dosa & Kokum soda, yumm...
I shall be a regular visitor ;-)
Authentic blend of Udupi and Maharashtrian food
Been going to Vaishali almost on every visit to Pune. One will never miss South Indian food once they're tried the extensive variety of their fare. The food is really tasty, nutritious and hygienic too. On early morning breakfast gaunts, one can spot morning joggers getting their dose of tea or coffee, with bread-butter or idli. Afternoons are packed with families and office-goers for their famous Lunch thali. You tell them you want your food more, or less spicy, they'll make it for you that way.
Their ample seating and family atmosphere will make you too want to keep coming here for ever!
Atithi Devo Bhava :)
w8in in queue for 45 mins for SPDP which newhere outside would have been served in few minutes, i thought should definately be worth a try, but my GOD, it was horrible.. curd was very sour, no salt .. the dosa's were so thin and potato bhaji served was so little !! even the medu-wada sambar i have tried, i dint find it so appealing !! And while eating they make you feel so uncomfortable, to finish quickly, because other customers are waiting ... it is absolutely like a mess !!
Best south Indian in town..
The south Indians snack items are the best here. Other items are also served.
As simple test for checking if the south Indian place is good, try their sambar first.. This place is exceptional in the test..
Try the Vaishali Special Masala Dosa, enough for lunch.. A real taste of south India and I love it!
Food-4/5 (Other items are decent, south Indian is good)
Service-2.5/5 (Difficult to find table always, waiters want you to leave)
Ambiance-2/5 (Not much in decor, plus a lot of hustle and bustle of families and children makes a noisy place)
Sexy coffee along with yummy dosas
Though i have been staying in Pune for over 2 yrs now, i had never been to Vaishali. So when all us roomies came out of the hall after watching the evening show of Aladin (horrible movie), i suggested that we go to Vaishali on FC Road for dinner.
We reached Vaishali @ 10 PM but there was still a queue. Fortunately we had to wait just 10 mins. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. Open Air seating, with the delicious smell of sambar hung in the air. And the chill in Pune air added to the effect.
First we ordered the Vaishali Special SPDP, but i was quite disappointed with it. I have better chats, much much better ones in Delhi.
Mysore Masala Dosa, and Ghee Sada Dosa were superrrbbbbb. My roomies had Cheese Masala Dosa and they also liked it. The last thing i tried was coffee and its the one of the best i have had in Pune - much better than that of what the 'popular' coffee joints offer, and quite cheap also.
SPDP, 4 dosas, 2 coffee and a lime soda..all this cost us just 310 rs. A 'more than' value for money indeed.
True punekars love it .
This place noisy crowded , you have to wait for long time for even couples also forget about the big group getting seats in five min, this is the USP of Vaishali & also shows the popularity of this very famous restaurant.
If you get seat within five minutes then you are riding on your luck that day.
This place serves great south indian food , sambar served here is one of the best in pune. How to start the ordering in Vaishali, its very simple 1st of all try SPDP ( shev potato dhahi puri) these are amazing ,the taste is divine.
Then go for idali chatani sambar ( it is again tastes great)
Then go for Mysoor masala dosa with cheese ( another best from the lot). Although it is south indian restaurant but belive me it is part of culture of pune .
So please be there and enjoy the crowded ambience , lots of pretty faces are there as it is located on FC road.
You have to try this restaurant.
Landmarks of Pune
When you come to Pune you got to enjoy some places which are very good in terms of quality, substance and other time tested factors. You may have heard of Bombay Dildar Kulfi(where is it by the way?),Chicken burgers of Marzorin,Kacchi Dabeli, Maharashtrian thali. These were there even before the multinationals offered their best through the SEZs.For people who have seen this city grow and who can feel the pinch of space in its ever expansion, this place called VAISHALI has been part of landmarks of many lives. Dont worry about the quality and the class of food served over here. Its still very Yummy and its still very honourable to wait here for more than 30 minutes over here.Yeah! the administration of such large number of waiting people is a cause for concern and the staff of the District collector may advice him for implementation of some plans for vehicle parking and a waiting arena for so many senior citizens and children who continue to value this place so much. This place may be granted a heritage status even though its existence has been in double digits only. When in Pune go over here...not just for food..its still great over here. And be rest assured your girlfriend wont find the place bad.Take her here during breaks..and not formal dinner..thats definitely some advice
I went here after nearly five years. And it is still the same. Amazing food and good service as I remember. Having the SPDP (I had 2) and then a strong coffee in a glass brought back lot of memories. Not much has changed here. And the crowd is still big as ever. Though I had to wait for about 30 min it was worth the wait.
Good Food, Bad Decor and Average Service
I have been a Vaishali customer for a long time now. The food there is pretty good, as it always has been. The Dosas and Idlis are pretty good, and you have to try the Sabudana wada. They also offer a good SPDP and a pretty good Mango milkshake to wash the meal down.
The prices are not too high, though you cannot exactly call it cheap either. Nowadays, the food prices are going up and the food servings are going down.
The most irritating thing about Vaishali that I can write is that you have to eat as fast as you can and then flee the place, else the waiters give you stares and sometimes even suggest your departure; else they come and ask you every half a minute whether they can get you anything else.
You have to give your name to the waiter when you arrive, and then wait for at least 15 - 25 minutes before he seats you. Then you have to order quickly and run!!
The decor too is not good. There is nothing exceptional about the appearance and the waiters too are just averagely dressed, I would say slightly on the shabbier side.
All in all, if you are a true foodie and go to a restaurant just for the food, and are willing to overlook the other things, then you should definitely give Vaishali a try.
1. You have to wait for at least half an hour to get a table.
2. The waiter will take another 15 mins. to get to your table. He first goes only to the regular customers.
3. Personal Experience - I hate waiting in a queue to get a table. Had been there once, ordered for a coffee, had got split milk with coffee powder. If you like your coffee that way then please go there.
4. Someone's always behind your chair to get the table.
BEST SOUTHY IN PUNE
I 've been going here for a very very long time.
Each time I go there especially In the Evening I crib about the crowd and the waiting time.
But the Food is AWESOME, the dosas, dahi wadas, SPDP
Their Sambar tastes the same for a very very long time...
Just love going to this place..
SPDP at Vaishali
Vaishali has been a favourite meeting place for punekars for a long time now. But Vaishali's SPDP which is mouthwateringly tasty is even more of a favourite. However the prices have gone up at the restaurant as well as the serving size has gone down. So soon Vaishali may just become a place to share a cup of coffee at and not SPDP.
Loved it To The Hilt !
i had heard a lot about vaishali so thought of giving it a shot....even though i went on a moday afternoon i had to wait for a good 15 miutes before i could get a place.
ok so first things first their garden cafe is beautiful and just loved their seating arrangement.
second the food is scrumptious....i ordered a mysore masala dosa while my friend ordered an onion uttapam...both awesome and as said before the sambhar was out of this world.
third the sweet lassi.never had such a lassi before.
fourth and the most important point it is very cheap....i had a very filling meal in 70 bucks !!
This is not just a restaurant.. Its an institution... Its in the very blood of many Puneites who swear by it.. You will find families who have been taking their Sunday breakfast here for a long time, morning walk groups who have been meeting here regularly for years, students who can't live without it, and people who have come back to Pune(for no matter how short a time span) making it a point to visit Vaishali before leaving again... This is the adda of FC roadies and others...
Their sambhar is to die for, and so is the SPDP.. expect a wait time, especially on weekend mornings...
Vaishali is FC Rd, and FC Rd is Vaishali
I'm learning French, and as an exercise the teacher asked us to form groups of two where one guy is a tourist and the other is a local. The tourist asks the local for a good restaurant on FC Rd & the directions, of course in French. And guess what, 80% of the groups (mostly college going students) suggested Vaishali.
Jokes aside, this place is definitely dirty.
Food is cheap but place is dirty
Vaishali is quite a popular place amongst the students. It is just coz they offer decent south-indian food at cheap prices within close vicinity of some colleges. But if you want put your health and hygiene at stake, go to this restaurant.
BUT the place is very dirty. When the waiter cleans the table with the mop, it leaves a terrible bad stink (not to mention the sticky tabletop it leaves). It seems that they never wash the mops in the entire day. Even the entire restaurant gives a kind of a foul smell.
When they get your order the plates (with dosas) are either stacked on top of each other or almost overlapping (and i dont where they must have put those plates earlier). When i ordered coffee, the cup was dripping wet. The sugar was damp and looked very uninviting.
I think there are many better places serving same food at the same prices but much cleaner.
